Eurowings doubles services at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)

Eurowings is significantly expanding its presence at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)   Photo Gunter Wicker/Airport Berlin

Eurowings is significantly expanding its presence at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) and extending its range of attractive direct destinations. With the start of the summer flight schedule from the end of March 2023, travellers will be able to choose from almost 30 destinations with Eurowings from the capital's airport – twice as many as before.

The new destinations that have already been determined include Malaga, Alicante, Antalya, Larnaca and Rhodes. Further destinations from Berlin residents' favourite vacation spots are currently being planned. In addition to the expansion towards the outh, Eurowings is strengthening its services to Northern Europe in particular: The Lufthansa subsidiary will connect the German capital with Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Helsinki from March 2023. As part of this growth, Eurowings is increasing its base in the capital and will have six aircraft stationed at BER in the future. A fourth aircraft is already reinforcing Eurowings' growth path at the capital's airport in the current 2022/23 winter flight schedule.

With this significant expansion of its program, the Lufthansa Group airline is also responding to the withdrawal of international competitors, who have pulled out of the German market in the wake of the pandemic. Months ago, Eurowings had already emphasized the importance of the capital, announcing its intention to strengthen its position in Berlin.

“Others are pulling back, we are building up,” Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof said at a joint press briefing with BER Airport. “Berlin is and remains an absolute tourist magnet and one of the most exciting metropolises in Europe, both culturally and historically. So it's only logical for us as a German airline to expand our presence and bring more Eurowings to the capital.”

Aletta von Massenbach, Chairwoman of the Management Board at BER: “The doubling of the aircraft fleet and connections at the capital's airport by Eurowings is a strong signal. Globally, the capital region is one of the most popular travel destinations and attracts people from all over the world. Berlin and Brandenburg as an economic region are experiencing dynamic development and offer airlines the best conditions for consistent growth. The expansion of Eurowings' services at BER further strengthens the partnership and enhances the connectivity of the airport location. We thank Eurowings and the Lufthansa Group for expanding their commitment and for their confidence in BER and the capital region.” As Germany's largest vacation airline with more than 4,000 employees, Eurowings has the most popular vacation destinations in Mallorca, the Canary Islands, Greece, Croatia and Egypt in its program.

Eurowings sees trend reversal in business travel: bookings up 60%

Photo Eurowings
Demand for business travel is picking up significantly: compared to previous year, bookings at Eurowings rose by 60 percent in November. In relation to the summer months, current bookings are even twice as high. The current top routes at Eurowings include, for example, the European connections from Dusseldorf to Milan and Vienna, from Hamburg to London and from Stuttgart to Budapest. Among the domestic German routes, connections from Berlin to Cologne, from Dusseldorf to Berlin, from Stuttgart to Berlin and from Hamburg to Stuttgart are far ahead. This highlights a trend reversal: for the first time since the start of the Covid pandemic, Eurowings is no longer recording a drop in demand toward the winter half-year – on the contrary: there is a revival in booking figures in the business travel segment.

“We see a rising dynamic in business travel across all industries. Travel is currently increasing in almost all sectors – also because the pent-up demand for face-to-face meetings is very high,” says Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof. Many managers are starting to build up personal networks again, especially since the contact persons in many companies have changed after the long Covid break. Airlines are also feeling a consistently positive impact on their bookings due to the elimination of the masking requirement as the last travel restriction.

Eurowings is the market leader at the airports in Cologne/Bonn, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, and Stuttgart and, based on its data, is able to obtain a representative overview of how business travel is developing in Germany.

Trade shows as major travel drivers

The upswing is particularly noticeable at the major German trade fair locations in Cologne, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, and Stuttgart, which are also Eurowings' largest bases: the need for personal exchange fills the trade fair venues, thus driving business travel and attracting visitors from all over Europe. For example, around two-thirds of all global industry events are held in Germany, and four of the world's ten largest exhibition centres are located in Germany. Air travellers take advantage of the attractive off-peak times to arrive from Birmingham, Geneva, Lyon, Prague, Salzburg, or Stockholm, for example. Air traffic is also benefiting from a significant easing of the situation at German airports. Since the holiday travel peak in the summer months, much of the load has been taken off the system, and the recruitment waves are also having an impact throughout the industry. Eurowings, for example, has so far flown with a reliability rate of 99.5 percent in November – a recognized high figure in the industry.

Eurowings celebrates its 1000th sneaker flight

Lufthansa Group airline with sports shoes on board instead of high heels

The sneaker alert at Eurowings continues: crews and teams of the German airline will once again wear white sports shoes featuring the Eurowings logo with their uniforms on Friday, 4 November. With the third edition of its "Sneaker Flydays," the airline of the Lufthansa Group is already celebrating its thousandth flight in sports shoes. Eurowings is not only providing a fashion eye-catcher with the sneakers to go with the uniform. A discussion has also started in the aviation industry as to whether sports shoes are not fundamentally the more comfortable "fit" for crew members.

Sneaker “Flydays" are very popular with employees and customers alike

Eurowings considers expansion and initiates industry-wide discussion

Are sports shoes generally the more comfortable "fit" for crew members?

"The next airline where flight attendants swap high heels for sneakers," is what travel blogs are saying about Eurowings on the matter. On social media, numerous airline employees are speaking out in favor of wearing sports shoes on board. There is now "an international discussion" about the choice of footwear, writes Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

Among the pioneers among airlines that have integrated sneakers on board into their uniform dress codes are Ukraine's SkyUp Airlines, Iceland's Play and Japanese carrier Zipair. Eurowings has deliberately declared its "Sneaker Flydays", which currently take place on the first Friday of every month, to be a test phase. First, the Lufthansa Group airline wants to analyze the reactions of its own staff and customers. If the feedback on the sneakers remains this positive, Eurowings is considering increasing the frequency of the "Sneaker Flydays" in the new year.

With this campaign, Eurowings wants to meet the desire of employees for a sporty travel companion. As a token of appreciation for all the extra miles Eurowings employees have gone during the pandemic, every employee received free sneakers from cooperation partner Puma in September. Since then, the all-white sneakers with the Eurowings logo can not only be worn privately and in the office, but also on board Eurowings flights – always on specific Fridays, the so-called "Sneaker Flydays”.

With this sporty outfit, Eurowings is emphasizing its claim to venture into new territory and move with the times – far beyond Germany. In addition to Eurowings Germany, Eurowings Europe is also taking part in the "Sneaker Flydays" – with locations in Mallorca, Stockholm, Prague, Salzburg and Pristina.

Eurowings pilots strike likely to ruin travel plans of around 30,000 tomorrow.

According to the German budget airline, Eurowings, part of the mighty Lufthansa Group, about 30,000 passengers will likely have travel plans disrupted by a one-day strike called by the firm's pilots.

Whilst Eurowings says it will do all it could to mitigate the disruption, with up to half of its flights operating to the timetable. yet thousands of people will have flights cancelled or delayed with the inconvenience set to last for days after the strike.

Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) the pilots union confirmed the strike would take place which follows ten rounds of talks that had subsequently failed.  The dispute is over working hours,  the union wants pilots' workloads to be greatly reduced, or rest time extended.

Eurowings consists of two flight operations. Only flights operated by Eurowings Germany are affected by the strike call, not those operated by Eurowings Europe. Eurowings is doing everything possible to minimise the impact of the strike action on passengers. The airline expects to be able to operate around half of its normal flight programme. In addition to Eurowings Europe, the airline can also rely on partners of the Lufthansa Group.

Eurowings ramping up schedules for summer season as demand increases

Eurowings ramping up schedules for the summer season as demand increases

Eurowings is preparing for a summer with enormous catch-up effects. After a significant increase in tourist flight bookings – several tens of thousands every day – demand for business routes is also picking up. After two years of the pandemic and months of working from home, the desire for freedom in both private and professional contexts is becoming stronger and stronger: people have had to postpone their vacations, long-planned visit to friends and family or trips to see their business partners, sometimes several times.

After numerous countries, such as Spain, Sweden or Denmark, have already largely returned to normality, the German government has also decided on far-reaching relaxations: almost all Covid-related measures are to be lifted by the end of March. Against this background, people's longing to finally be able to travel again is coming into focus.

Jens Bischof, CEO Eurowings: "The current formula is: the longer the contact restrictions, the greater the desire to travel. After two years of the pandemic, millions of people finally want to catch up on their holidays or meet important business contacts in person again. Our increase in bookings is currently following the 'ketchup bottle principle': first nothing for a long time, then everything at once."

CEO Jens Bischof: "Millions of people finally want to catch up on their holidays or meet important business contacts in person again after two years of the pandemic".

Expansion of the flight schedule

Eurowings is responding to the rising demand by significantly increasing its frequencies on both leisure and business routes.

Business routes to be resumed by the end of March
In the context of the pandemic, Eurowings had to temporarily suspend some routes. With the increasing demand on business routes, numerous domestic and European connections will be resumed by the end of March.

From Hamburg, for example, there will be up to eleven flights a week to Amsterdam and up to nine flights a week to Nuremberg.

As European travel ‘takes off’, Sagrotan joins forces with Eurowings to give crew and passengers the products and training they need to stay safe

The travel industry has been significantly impacted by the pandemic. Eurowings needed a comprehensive hygiene concept and the support of a trusted disinfectant brand to get travellers back in the air. Enter: German’s number one expert in disinfection1 Sagrotan.

In an exciting new partnership, Sagrotan and Eurowings will be joining forces and giving crew members and passengers peace of mind when taking to the skies.

From August, the new partnership will:

Provide all Eurowings passengers receiving a Sagrotan disinfectant wipe to start their journey which kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses
Equip Eurowings check-in areas at Cologne and Düsseldorf, Germany with Sagrotan hand sanitiser dispensers
Give passengers the opportunity to purchase the popular Sagrotan disinfectant hand gel via the Eurowings in-flight magazine

So as part of our WeCare promise, we have partnered with the number 1 disinfection brand in Germany and will offer Sagrotan products both at check-in and onboard.” Lorenza Maggio Vice President Product, Customer Experience & Marketing at Eurowings

Lufthansa Group Airlines extend option for free rebooking

Since the end of August, all fares of Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings can be rebooked without a rebooking fee. Originally, this fare offer was valid for (re-)bookings until the end of February. Now the offer is being extended again: all airline fares can now be rebooked free of charge as often as desired up to May 31, 2021, if the rebooking is also made before that date. After that, another rebooking is possible free of charge.

Lufthansa Group Airlines had already made it possible for its customers to rebook their tickets without a fee last year. The waiver of the rebooking fee applies worldwide for all new bookings in all fares on short, medium and long-haul routes. This enables flexible travel planning for all Lufthansa Group Airlines customers.

However, additional costs may arise for rebookings if, for example, the original booking class is no longer available when rebooking to a different date or to a different destination.

Also, rebooking of tickets issued up to and including August 31, 2020, can now be done until May 31, 2021.

We make this possible with attractive non-stop connections to the respective home countries. We are seeing continued stable demand in this segment, even in the last weeks and months of the Corona crisis," said Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings.

From Berlin to Beirut

Eurowings details its summer 2020 schedule

As well as opening further European routes, including the Greek islands, Croatia, Mallorca or the Bulgarian coastal cities of Burgas and Varna. Lufthansa Group airlines significantly expands flight schedule until September

The airlines in the Lufthansa Group are significantly expanding their services in the coming weeks and months. This applies to both short-haul and long-haul flights. The focus in expanding flight schedules is to again offer as many destinations as possible.

In September, for example, 90 percent of all originally planned short- and medium-haul destinations and 70 percent of long-haul destinations will be served again. Customers planning their autumn and winter holidays now have access to a comprehensive global network of connections via all hubs of the Group.

The core brand Lufthansa alone will be flying more than 100 times a week to destinations in North America via its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich in autumn. Around 90 flights a week are planned to Asia, over 20 to the Middle East and over 25 to Africa. In Africa, for example, there will again be flights to Windhoek and Nairobi, in the Middle East to Beirut and Riyadh, in North America to Houston, Boston and Vancouver, in Asia to Hong Kong and Singapore.

Major restructuring and downsizing for the Lufthansa Group an omen of things to come for the European aviation industry

Six A380s are being axed from the Lufthansa fleet.                                                                              Photo Airbus
With the coronavirus COVID-19 crisis, showing no real signs of slowing in Europe, one of the unions biggest airline groups has released details of a drastic initial downsizing.

The Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG does not expect the aviation industry to return to pre-coronavirus (PC) crisis levels very quickly and with that in mind, it has decided to instigate an initial round of downsizing.

This major downsizing will affect almost all flight operations of the Lufthansa Group and is perhaps an omen of what is to come from carriers around the world.

The tragic news for fans of the double-decker A380 is that the airline will withdraw six of them immediately and they will be decommissioned and offered for sale.  They were,  prior to coronavirus (PC) scheduled to be removed from service and up for sale to Airbus in 2022 anyway.

Return home schedules from Lufthansa Group airlines as Austrian Airlines flies its longest ever nonstop journey

From the beginning of next week, a return flight schedule will be in effect for the airlines in the Lufthansa Group. This will initially be valid until 19 April 2020.

Harry Hohmeister, Member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG: "This situation has a historic dimension. Hardly anyone wants to or is currently allowed to travel. That is why our returnee flight schedule is now essentially geared to the needs of European citizens who want to return to their home countries. We are now flying as many people home as possible!"

The intercontinental return flight schedule in detail

Long-haul flights are offered as scheduled from Frankfurt and Zurich. Lufthansa's intercontinental flight schedule from Frankfurt is as follows: three times a week to Newark, Chicago (both USA), Montreal (Canada), Sao Paulo (Brazil), Bangkok (Thailand), Tokyo (Japan) and Johannesburg (South Africa).

Lufthansa and Eurowings introduce further physical distancing measures

Neighbouring seat blocked on all flights from Germany
Arrivals and departures only at gate positions in Germany where possible
New measures coordinated between German Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer and Carsten Spohr, CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG
Lufthansa and Eurowings are introducing further measures to ensure the physical distance between passengers during their journey. Neighbouring seats on board in Economy Class and Premium Economy will be blocked and remain free on all flights from Germany. This also applies to flights within Germany.

This regulation does not apply on flights to Germany, because the airlines top priority remains returning as many people as possible to their home country.

In addition, from now on all Lufthansa and Eurowings flights at domestic airports will only be handled at building positions wherever possible given the existing airport infrastructure and official regulations. This measure intends to help passengers avoid having to take bus trips. Where this is not possible at short notice, twice as many buses will be operating, which has also been the case for the last few days.

Both measures will apply until 19 April 2020.

Lufthansa and Eurowings have already taken numerous measures to increase the distance between passengers along the entire travel chain, for example at check-in counters or when boarding and disembarking from the aircraft. The service onboard has also been adapted regarding the current physical distancing measures.

The Lufthansa Group will continue to offer attractive long-haul destinations from Düsseldorf in summer 2020

The Lufthansa Group will continue to offer attractive long-haul destinations from Düsseldorf in the summer of 2020. The two New York airports Newark (EWR) and John-F.-Kennedy (JFK), as well as Fort Myers (RSW) and Miami (MIA) in Florida, offer travellers a strong North American program.

In addition, Lufthansa Group continues to connect Düsseldorf with the Caribbean destination of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. The flights from the largest airport in North Rhine-Westphalia can now be booked via lufthansa.com and eurowings.com.

The flights are operated in cooperation with Eurowings, which uses a fleet of Airbus A330 aircraft with 283 seats. A business class product is also on board on all intercontinental routes from the NRW state capital: Passengers benefit, among other things, from a comfortable seat which, at the push of a button, automatically transforms into a two-metre-long bed with a horizontal lying surface ("full flat"). Premium Economy and Economy Class are also available for bookings. The intercontinental destinations from Düsseldorf complement the growing range of flights to attractive long-haul tourist destinations with which Lufthansa, together with Eurowings, is also present at the hubs of Frankfurt and Munich. All North American flights from Düsseldorf will be offered with a Lufthansa codeshare.

Lufthansa's 2019 third-quarter result only slightly below 2018, despite economic slowdown and higher fuel costs

In a challenging operating environment, Lufthansa Group achieved an Adjusted EBIT of EUR 1.3 billion for the third quarter of 2019, only slightly below the EUR 1.4 billion of the prior-year period. Against the backdrop of higher fuel costs, which were EUR 171 million above their 2018 level in the third quarter alone, the Group delivered a sound business performance for the period.

“Our airlines were able to translate their premium quality and market strength into solid third-quarter earnings,” confirms Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board & CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. “At Eurowings, the turnaround measures are showing first results; and at Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Lufthansa Cargo we will be taking tangible corrective action to improve earnings. As Europe’s leading airline group, we are on a sound and stable strategic course.”

The third-quarter earnings were supported by continued strong business on North Atlantic routes. Unit costs were also substantially reduced in the third quarter, particularly at the Network Airlines.

Austrian and Eurowings are blending in Austria

Lufthansa Group airlines Austrian Airlines and Eurowings are repositioning themselves to blend more in Austria and reinforce their cooperation, it has been confirmed by Lufthansa Group this week.

Part of the goal is to strengthen the Vienna hub and expand decentralised traffic from the Austrian federal states. For now, Austrian Airlines will be responsible for network planning at the Vienna hub in order to improve the management of transfer traffic. As of 1 January 2020, Eurowings will deploy four aircraft including crews in wet lease for Austrian Airlines.

At the same time, Eurowings will strongly expand its presence at Salzburg Airport and increase the number of Airbus A319 aircraft stationed in the City of Mozart to a total of three. This marks as the next step forward in the Lufthansa Group to merge the airlines together to get uniformity and cost allignment. Furthermore, Eurowings will expand its leisure flight program from Innsbruck Airport offering full charter flights to warm-water destinations. Thereby Eurowings is pursuing its strategy of consistently concentrating on decentralized routes i.e. point-to-point flight traffic. Eurowings is already number one at four major German airports, namely Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne and Stuttgart.
