Delta Sky Way at LAX transformation complete, 18 months ahead of schedule

Delta Air Lines and Los Angeles World Airports have unveiled the final major phase of the $2.3 billion Delta Sky Way at LAX project, with Terminal 3 at Los Angeles International Airport now directly connected to the Tom Bradley International Terminal via moving airside walkways, officially eliminating the need for busing between terminals.

“This modern, state-of-the-art facility has been at the center of Delta’s efforts to become the premier airline of Los Angeles, and now, as we as we celebrate this years-long project being finished much earlier than expected, we are better equipped than ever to provide Angelenos and all of our customers traveling through LA with the truly seamless and elevated experience that they deserve” said Scott Santoro, Vice President of Global Sales.

The airline’s west headhouse and Delta One check-in area opened to customers in June, providing another entry point for check-in and security access. Self-service kiosks in the lobby area make dropping bags and printing boarding passes even easier. On the lower arrivals level of Terminal 3, the exclusive Delta One check-in area offers Delta One customers a private TSA screening lane, direct access to the Delta Sky Club, light food and beverages and white-glove assistance from Delta’s Elite Service agents.

Delta’s new Terminal 3, a 1.2-million-square-foot, 27-gate complex, debuted last April, featuring a centralized check-in lobby, expanded security checkpoint and baggage claim area, as well as a state-of-the-art Delta Sky Club, one of the largest in Delta’s system. Nine additional new gates, new concessions and spacious seating areas opened to customers in October 2022.

"Having just celebrated the opening of LAX’s Terminal 3 West Headhouse and already hearing an incredible amount of positive feedback on that aspect of the project, I know we can expect similar praise on the new Terminal 3 and Tom Bradley International Terminal post-security connector. This new passageway will significantly enhance the travel experience for millions of international and domestic guests," said Justin Erbacci, Chief Executive Officer, LAWA. "LAWA is thankful to its amazing partners Delta and Hensel Phelps and the entire LAWA team who rose to the occasion to deliver the Delta Sky Way project."

LAX serves as one of Delta’s most important coastal hubs, operating over 155 peak-day flights to nearly 55 destinations across the globe, serving 19 of the top 20 markets for Los Angeles customers. The airline continues to add new and exciting destinations to its slate, with never-before-operated service launching to Auckland, New Zealand, (Oct. 30); Jackson Hole, Wyo.; and Vail, Colo. (Dec. 16).

Delta and its 4,000 Los Angeles-based employees are deeply ingrained in the community, supporting more than a dozen nonprofit organizations throughout the state of California. Additionally, the airline is proud to serve as the inaugural founding partner of the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the official airline of Team USA. The airline also serves as the as official carrier of Crypto.com Arena and the LA Kings.

Delta Air Lines and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) have completed another major phase of the Delta Sky Way at LAX: the brand-new T3 facility, featuring nine new gates* and spacious seating areas, will open to customers on Oct. 5.

“We continue to elevate the customer journey in Los Angeles, building loyalty through state-of-the-art infrastructure, robust network offerings, innovative technology and, of course, our award-winning customer service,” said Scott Santoro, Vice President of Global Sales. “LAX is one of Delta’s most important coastal hubs, and we’re committed to providing customers with the premium curb-to-claim experience they deserve.”

Delta accelerated timelines on the T3 construction, pulling the future forward even faster for LA and Angelenos. In addition to the new gates, Delta’s premium concessions and retail partner Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) will open a variety of restaurant and retail options in Terminal 3 over the coming months, including Alfred Coffee, Chicken + Beer, Jamba Juice, Native and more. These will join Homeboy and Gameway, both currently open and operating.

There is more transformation to come at LAX, with the west headhouse opening next spring, featuring a dedicated Delta One check-in area along with self-service bag drop kiosks. And in 2024, a Delta One-exclusive Club will open its doors, connecting to the existing Terminal 3 Club and measuring approximately 10,000 square feet.

The second major phase of the Delta Sky Way at LAX is just one of several infrastructure milestones to open this year. The dazzling Terminal C facility at New York’s LGA opened to customers in June while new Sky Clubs in Nashville (BNA) and Tokyo, Japan (HND) opened over the summer.

When the Delta Sky Way at LAX project is finished in 2023, Terminals 2 and 3 will be a consolidated, 1.2-million-square-foot, state-of-the-art, 27-gate complex, featuring a quick airside connector to the Tom Bradley International Terminal, eliminating the need to bus between terminals.

"Elevating the guest experience is pivotal in our ongoing work to build a better LAX, and we are thrilled to see the next major phase of this project completed in partnership with Delta Air Lines," said Justin Erbacci, Chief Executive Officer, Los Angeles World Airports. "The new Terminal 3 concourse includes best-in-class passenger amenities and technology, and showcases our vision for a fully modernized airport."

Delta continues to not only invest in infrastructure but also expand on its leading network position at LAX. Last week, the airline announced that two new trans-Atlantic routes would begin flying next summer to London (LHR) and Paris (CDG), both of which have not flown since pre-pandemic or prior. Additionally, the airline recently announced never-operated-before service to Tahiti (PPT) and added daily nonstop service to Miami (MIA), both beginning Dec. 17. Three-times-weekly service to Toyko-Haneda (HND) also restarts on Oct. 30.

LAX serves as one of Delta’s most important coastal hubs, where the airline today operates 135 daily flights to nearly 50 destinations across the globe, serving 18 of the top 20 markets for LA customers.

The airline’s deep ties to the Los Angeles community are evidenced by its role as an inaugural founding partner of LA28, which today unveiled a new co-branded logo with Delta, the official airline of Team USA.

Additionally, Delta is the official carrier of the LA Kings and Los Angeles Lakers and supports more than a dozen nonprofit organizations throughout the state of California, such as the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, the Covenant House of California, Junior Achievement - Southern California, KIPP LA Schools, Los Angeles Pride, Toys for Tots - Los Angeles, United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and the United Service Organizations (USO).

Delta has invested $12 billion coast-to-coast in the last ten years, doubling down on its vision for the future of travel to build airports of the future that are comfortable, easy to navigate and part of an effortlessly connected journey, capable of absorbing and supporting new innovative experiences as technology evolves.

IDEMIA Brings Boarding Security to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

IDEMIA is facilitating a facial recognition system to help U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) increase air passengers’ security and border control at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), one of the busiest airports in the world. The technology has been deployed in LAX’s new West Gates at Tom Bradley International Terminal and is a one-stop safety solution for passengers, airlines, and airports alike.

The deployment is part of a contract awarded by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) to EASIER, a leader in e-gate technology. In alignment with protection measures defined by the U.S. Congress, passengers will now get to experience a faster, more accurate, and touchless boarding experience. LAX is just one of multiple airports where IDEMIA’s facial recognition technology is deployed in conjunction with CBP and an example of the long-term commitment to provide secure and effective passenger facilitation technologies.

“With IDEMIA’s advanced facial recognition technology, which was ranked #1 in the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) latest Face Recognition Vendor Test (FRVT), airports will be equipped to deliver the best-in-class passenger experience utilizing our accurate and responsible system.” Lisa Sullivan, VP Travel and Transport of IDEMIA North America.

“We are delighted to support LAWA, U.S. Customs and more than 50 airlines in achieving their goal of helping passengers travel safely," explains Ludovic Libeski, Managing Director of EASIER. “Faced with an unprecedented health crisis, EASIER teams and our partner IDEMIA mobilized to ensure a large-scale deployment of solutions at the largest Origin & Destination airport in the United States and to improve the passenger experience.”

IDEMIA does not store private passenger information and CBP conducts biometric matching in the cloud. U.S. citizens can choose to opt out of the facial image capture and instead be processed by airline agents with a passport and boarding pass.

Renewable natural gas continues to move people at Los Angeles International Airport

Photo: Business Wire
In the United States of America, the demands for clean, cost-effective renewable natural gas (RNG) as a transportation fuel continues to rise. Clean Energy Fuels Corp announced it has inked contracts to provide its Redeem™ renewable natural gas (RNG) to power fleets across multiple sectors that include transit, trucking, airports, solid waste and service vehicles.

Redeem became commercially available in 2013 and is derived from capturing biogenic methane that is naturally created by the decomposition of dairy, landfill, and wastewater treatment plant waste. As a vehicle fuel, Redeem enables at least a 70 percent reduction in carbon emissions when displacing diesel or gasoline.

More fleets are transitioning to natural gas-powered vehicles (NGVs) for their performance, cost savings, environmental advantages and extensive nationwide fueling network, with sales this year on an upward trajectory. As of May, year-to-date sales of NGVs surged 43 percent, according to ACT Research, and were also up 10 percent from April’s numbers.
