Hawaiian Airlines #RainbowRunwayChallenge

In honour of National Pride Month, Hawaiian Airlines tapped Hawaiʻi-born dance celebrity Mark Kanemura to kick off its #RainbowRunwayChallenge in a vibrant celebration of inclusivity and aloha. Coinciding with the debut of the airline’s new TikTok channel, followers are encouraged to create their own #RainbowRunwayChallenge dance or walk inspired by the video for a chance to win 160,000 HawaiianMiles, a five-night stay at the Royal Hawaiian Resort and a chance to join Kanemura as the guest of honour on Hawaiian’s Rainbow Runway float at the Honolulu Pride Parade and Festival on 15th October.

“Dance is a universal language that can break barriers, and the #RainbowRunwayChallenge represents an opportunity for people to express themselves in a fun and prideful way. I have always believed that dance is for everyone, and I am so excited to connect with people through this challenge,” said Kanemura. “This video is all about self-expression and pride, and during the filming, I was reminded how proud I am to be from this special place and to be a part of this beautiful community. I cannot wait to return in October for an even bigger celebration!”

The video for the #RainbowRunwayChallenge takes viewers through Kanemura’s hometown to seven notable locations across Oʻahu representing a different colour of the rainbow, including the Royal Hawaiian Resort, also known as the “Pink Palace” (red), Waikīkī’s Surfboard Alley (orange), Waimānalo Country Farms’ sunflower fields (yellow), Kāko'o ʻŌiwi’s taro patches (green) and the famous Waikīkī pier (blue). The video concludes with an epic dance celebration on a runway at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, backed by the airline's iconic Pualani aircraft tail (purple). Along the way, Kanemura is joined by several friends who include local LGBTQ+ influencers, Keiki (kid) pop dancers, hula dancers, drag queens and members of Hawaiian’s LBGTQ+ employee resource group, Haʻaheo (pride).

The #RainbowRunwayChallenge will come full circle in October for Honolulu Pride, where the sweepstakes winner will join Kanemura as the guest of honour on the official larger-than-life Hawaiian Airlines’ Rainbow Runway float.

The 2022 Honolulu Pride Parade and Festival will kick off on Oct. 1 with events throughout the month. This year’s theme, “Rooted in Pride,” celebrates the cultural and ancestral queer roots in the Hawaiian Islands. As the official airline sponsor of Honolulu Pride, Hawaiian Airlines proudly supports The Hawaiʻi LGBT Legacy Foundation in their mission to educate, facilitate and empower LBGTQA+ people as integral members of Hawaiʻi’s diverse community.

American Airlines named on the Diversity Best Practices Inclusion Index

American Airlines has been named to the Diversity Best Practices 2020 Inclusion Index, which recognizes top companies and organizations engaging in effective practices of diversity and inclusion. This is the first time American has been named to the DBP Inclusion Index. The index was established in 2017 by Diversity Best Practices, a division of Working Mother Media, the preeminent organization for diversity thought leaders to share best practices and develop innovative solutions for culture change.

"We are proud and grateful for this recognition of our inclusion and diversity efforts, as we continue in our commitment to create a workplace where everyone feels valued and respected," said Ken Charles, Chief Diversity Officer at American. “We take tremendous pride in being an airline that cares for and welcomes people from all backgrounds. We know employing a diverse workforce allows us to meet the needs of the diverse populations we serve around the world.”

The index helps organizations understand trends and gaps in demographic representation and identifies diversity, equity and inclusion solutions to close the gaps. Organizations provided data and were measured in three key areas: best practices in the recruitment, retention and advancement of people from underrepresented groups — women, racial and ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ people; inclusive corporate culture, including leadership accountability; and demographic diversity for women, racial and ethnic minorities.

Thomas Cook Airlines 'fly with Pride'

With Manchester Pride’s biggest ever Festival just days away, long-standing Pride partner Thomas Cook Airlines’ “Fly with Pride” flight to San Francisco took off from Manchester Airport with an all-LGBT+ crew and has touched down in the Golden Gate City overnight, following a celebration at the Northern hub.

Captured on film, the celebrations started when a Metrolink rainbow tram arrived at The Airport Station with Thomas Cook Airlines’ crew, pilots, customers and House of Suarez, who led a vibrant parade through to check-in. At the gate, customers kicked off their holiday to San Francisco in style with a colourful Pride party, a Gaydio DJ set and further performances from House of Suarez.

The “Fly with Pride” A330 aircraft was emblazoned with the Pride heart, one of five Thomas Cook

Airlines aircraft specially painted this year, each representing a decade since the Stonewall riots and

one for each of the five years that the airline has supported the Manchester Pride Festival.

The crew also wore a special uniform for the flight. See the livery being painted in a fantastic time-lapse video, here.

Thomas Cook Airlines has long supported diversity and inclusion among its colleagues and customers and actively recruits diverse talent and skills in its Manchester headquarters. Christoph Debus, CEO of Thomas Cook Airlines said, “Diversity is in our DNA. We fly our customers all over the world and we don’t just want to get them from A to B. We want to connect people regardless of their sexuality, gender or race. We believe in a future where everyone can be who they want to be and travel the world while doing so.
