90 years of elegance captured in new book

To celebrate 90 years of elegance at Air France, the company has given French photographer Karl Hab carte blanche to highlight its unique history and its spirit of excellence, always at the forefront of eras and trends.

Karl Hab has produced a book of photos entitled “24H Air France”. This new book is the latest addition to his collection of works based on the same editorial approach, inviting the viewer to explore a particular universe through his personal gaze over a 24-hour period.

Each of Karl Hab’s photographs is an invitation to travel through time. For 24 dreamy hours, the photographer takes us on a journey to find out more about the uniforms that have marked the history of Air France, past and present, captured in legendary or ultra-modern aircraft and settings.

Designed by Dior, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Carven, Louis Féraud, Nica Ricci and Christian Lacroix, the Air France uniforms chosen by the photographer are displayed to stunning effect in unique settings.

Karl Hab focuses his lens on the world of aviation that is so dear to his heart, revealing hidden moments and details that tell the story of the airline’s different eras.

The very essence of Air France, combining elegance, cutting-edge technology and innovation, comes to life in every shot.

This book is a celebration of the French art of travel crafted by Air France since 1933. It reveals its timeless heritage from a resolutely contemporary perspective. It also bears witness to its ambition and vision for the future – to offer the best of France around the world.

Air France is ready to welcome the world for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 July 24 through August 11, and the Paralympic Games Paris 2024 August 28 through September 8. Last week Air France confirmed it has signed a partnership agreement with the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 Organising Committee (OCOG). The air carrier is now the official partner of the 33rd Olympics of the modern era, as it pledges to continue to back this global event it has been supporting since becoming the official partner of the Paris 2024 bid in 2016.

“We are proud to extend our partnership with the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024. After the thrill of Paris being awarded the Games, we can’t wait to contribute to making this global event a success. The Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 speak to our goals and values at Air France. Air France's La Première and Business Cabin passengers will be able to enjoy top quality dishes from Michelin-starred French chef Julien Royer

Since 1 July 2023, on departure from Singapore, chef Julien Royer's new signature dishes are served exclusively in Air France's La Première and Business cabins.

Air France operates 10 weekly flights between Singapore and Paris-Charles de Gaulle.

On departure from Singapore, Air France is renewing its collaboration with the triple Michelin-starred chef Julien Royer, which began in March 2019. Julien Royer is now offering the airline's customers new and totally original dishes for the menus in the La Première and Business cabins. No fewer than 18 culinary creations have been devised by the chef, to be enjoyed progressively over the year.

In both these travel cabins, two of the four dishes, including the vegetarian option, are systematically created by Julien Royer. Gambas "ravioli-style" or a duo of wild rice sautéed with the flavours of South-East Asia in the La Première cabin, poached sea bass with lemongrass or gnocchi glazed in a Kâmpôt pepper sauce in the Business cabin - all these culinary delights are exclusively dedicated to customers travelling from Singapore to Paris. Julien Royer, a native of Auvergne, also works at the triple Michelin-starred Odette and Claudine restaurant in the city-state.

With its in-flight dining offer, Air France is committed to showcasing the quality and diversity of France's gastronomic heritage as part of an increasingly responsible approach, by focusing on fresh, seasonal, and local produce and a systematic choice of vegetarian dish in all travel cabins.

Tourists urged to avoid cities in France as unrest continues.

The entire French tourism industry faces an uncertain future as cancellations flood in over violent unrest of recent days.

Six nights of violent protests across France following the fatal shooting of a teenager by a police officer has already impacted the nation's tourism industry which was rapidly recovering from the covid pandemic crisis.

Many countries around the world have urged their citizens to either take extra care or even completely avoid going to France because of the recent unrest, violence and looting that has erupted not only in the capital Paris but also in many other cities.

The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office updated its travel advice, warning that since 27th June, riots have taken place across France. Many have turned violent. Shops, public buildings and parked cars have been targeted. There may be disruptions to road travel and local transport provision may be reduced. Some local authorities may impose curfews. Locations and timing of riots are unpredictable. You should monitor the media, avoid areas where riots are taking place, check the latest advice with operators when travelling and follow the advice of the authorities.

Whilst not issuing a stronger warning, the FCO did say, that British nationals should reconsider plans to attend big meetings and be aware of their surroundings at all times, and move away quickly from disturbances.

Netherlands Authorities advised, "since June 27, 2023, there have been riots in Paris and other major cities in France, including Toulouse, Lyon and Roubaix. Sometimes cars are set on fire, and fights can also take place between rioters and the French (military) police. In the evening, avoid suburbs of major French cities and follow the local news."  Demonstrations take place regularly, especially in the larger cities. Sometimes violence can occur. Therefore, stay away from these demonstrations, it tells Dutch tourists.

China’s consulate in Marseille has warned tourists to be 'vigilant and exercise caution” after a bus carrying Chinese tourists was attacked with stones and rocks by protesters in the city, with a number being injured. The city has been shocked by the levels of violence on Friday and Saturday nights.

Australia updated its advice, saying that its citizens should exercise a high degree of caution. "Riots have occurred across France which have turned violent, leading to the destruction of property including vehicles, shops, police stations and schools. Clashes with police have occurred, resulting in the use of tear gas and arrests. Be particularly vigilant at night and avoid all demonstrations and areas with significant police activity. Curfews have been introduced in some cities. Public transport may be restricted or cancelled. The situation may change at short notice. Monitor the media and official sources for updates."

In general, the rioters initially targeted public and official buildings, high-end stores like Apple and electrical retailers, however on Friday and Saturday many other stores, including supermarkets and general shops were attacked along with hotels and restaurants.

Rioters, many in masks even rammed a car into the home of Vincent Jeanbrun, the mayor of L'Haÿ-les-Roses,  which is a Paris suburb, not too far from Orly Airport.  The protesters set fire to the house, while Jeanbrun's wife and young children (aged 5 and 7) slept upstairs. Many have commented locally that this was an 'assassination attempt' and condemned the action that left one of the children injured and Mrs Jeanbrun with a suspected broken leg as they tried to flee the attackers who shot fireworks at them.

President Emmanuel Macron cancelled a state visit to Germany that had been scheduled to start on Sunday because of the crisis, the latest in a series of issues to beset his presidency in recent months.

Violence has erupted elsewhere, including in the Swiss border city of Lausanne, where a number of shop windows were smashed, particularly in the Flon district and on rue de Genève on Saturday night, the local police said. Around 50 police officers were deployed to restore order and on a number of occasions, they were required to disperse youths who threw stones and rocks at them. A small number of rioters were arrested during the night the police advised in a statement.

Air France and Airbus acquitted of manslaughter charges over 2009 Rio-Paris crash

Air France and the European plane manufacturer Airbus have been acquitted over the 2009 crash of a Rio-Paris flight AF447, after a French court ruled today that their errors could not be proven as the cause of the crash.

The disaster took the lives of all 228 people onboard the jet and is the worst aviation disaster for the Paris-based airline.

According to France 24, while the ruling was expected after prosecutors recommended to the Paris court not to seek a conviction, it is still a huge blow for families of victims who have waged a 14-year campaign for justice.

In a statement,  Air France said it "takes note of the judgement" and "The company will always remember the memory of the victims of this terrible accident and expresses its deepest sympathy to all of their loved ones."

Air France presents its new spring menu on board its long-haul La Première and Business cabins

From March to June 2023, on departure from Paris, Air France offers a new series of exceptional dishes to be exclusively enjoyed on board its long-haul La Première and Business cabins. The company is teaming up with a high-flying trio of chefs - Mauro Colagreco, Angelo Musa and Régis Marcon – to showcase French haute cuisine on board its flights.

To design these menus, the chefs have worked alongside Servair, a global leader in in-flight catering, to create a selection of dishes, focusing on fresh, seasonal and local produce. As part of its commitment to a more responsible catering offer, the red meat, poultry, milk products and eggs on each menu are of French origin and the fish sourced from sustainable fisheries. A vegetarian dish is also systematically available.

Mauro Colagreco and Angelo Musa in the La Première cabin

For the very first time, the company has entrusted the dishes on the menu of its prestigious La Première suites to Mauro Colagreco, a three-Michelin starred chef and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for biodiversity, based in Menton (France). He has come up with eight tasty dishes that will be revealed gradually from March to June, created by selecting only seasonal produce.

“I was inspired to create these dishes by our region in the south of France, the Alpes Maritimes. There is a whole range of ingredients from the sea, the mountains, citrus fruits and the famous Menton lemons. I would like passengers in the La Première cabin to discover each product and its history so that their meal is a real moment of culinary pleasure suspended in time,” said Mauro Colagreco.

The dishes signed by Mauro Colagreco for the La Première cabin -

  • Comté and onion ravioli with porcini sauce;
  • Asparagus with parmesan cream;
  • Lobster, citrus vinaigrette;
  • Crusted sea bream, royal courgette, shellfish juice and tarragon sauce;
  • Guinea fowl, roasted squash, orange sauce;
  • Roast chicken, yellow courgette fennel kumquat salad, saffron lemon sauce;
  • Lamb roll with pistachio and kumquat confit, green condiments;
  • Rack of lamb, chard stuffed with lamb confit, Provençal sauce.

In terms of desserts, this is also the first time that Angelo Musa, Meilleur Ouvrier de France and World’s Best Pastry Chef, is bringing an elegant and sweet touch to the menus in the La Première cabin worthy of the finest restaurants. For this series, the chef has signed a selection of 4 desserts where balance, delicacy and harmony of flavours meet.

“It’s an immense source of pride to work with Air France and to invite La Première customers to discover my desserts. For me, Air France embodies French excellence, just like my profession” added Angelo Musa.

Air France’s new long-haul cabins take to the skies for the first time!

New York-JFK, Rio de Janeiro and Dakar are the first destinations available this winter.

On 20 January 2023, the first Boeing 777-300 ER equipped with Air France’s latest long-haul cabins will take off from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to New York-JFK. Named “Fontainebleau”, this aircraft will then serve Rio de Janeiro airport in Brazil from 21 January and Dakar in Senegal from 22 January.

The continued refurbishment of the 12 Boeing 777-300 ERs in Air France’s long-haul fleet will enable the airline to gradually offer more flights equipped with these new cabins to these first three destinations during the winter season, and then to expand this network during the year.

Thanks to this new major step in Air France’s move upmarket, all of the company’s long-haul Business cabins will be equipped with seats that transform into full-flat beds by the end of 2023, compared to 90% today. By this date, the entire fleet* will also be equipped with in-flight Wi-Fi, compared to 97% today.

*excluding the regional fleet

In the Business cabin (48 seats), the airline’s completely redesigned iconic seat features even more enveloping curves and extra comfort. This seat’s design is based on the 3 “F”s – Full Flat, meaning that the seat transforms into a real bed almost two metres long, Full Access, providing all passengers direct access to the aisle, and Full Privacy, ensuring optimal privacy. A new sliding door allows passengers to create a totally private space, out of sight from the other passengers in the cabin. To create a greater sense of privacy for passengers travelling together, the seats located in the centre of the cabin are now equipped with a central panel that can be lowered by pressing it down, thus creating a convivial space in which to make the most of the flight together. The seat also features a wide 17.3-inch 4K High-Definition anti-glare screen with a noise-reducing headset, a new Bluetooth connection allowing passengers to use their own headphones and several electric sockets.

As customers board the aircraft, they are greeted by a backlit winged seahorse, embodying the company’s founding myth and rich history. The seat’s padding adds softness and a feeling of cosiness. Wool, brushed aluminium, full-grain French leather are the noble, soft and natural materials chosen by Air France for the manufacture of its seats. Each seat is also embroidered with the company’s trademark red accent.

In the Premium Economy cabin (48 seats), Air France is introducing its latest recliner-type seat model already available on its Airbus A350, while further improving its comfort. Each seat offers 96 cm legroom. The seat cushions have been redesigned and the navy blue herringbone fabric adds further softness. The seat back reclines to 124 degrees and has been widened to provide greater privacy. A new noise-reducing audio headset is integrated into the seat and is easy to use at any time during the flight. The seat also features USB A and C ports.

In the Economy cabin (273 seats), the seats also meet the highest standards of comfort on the market. Each seat has a wide 43 cm seat pan, a 119 degree recline and 79 cm of legroom. The backrest is ergonomically designed, offering reinforced lateral support. It is also equipped with a USB A port.

The seats in these two cabins are equipped with a wide 13.3-inch 4K High-Definition screen with Bluetooth connection, ideal for enjoying over 1,500 hours of on-demand entertainment with personal headphones.

In all cabins, customers have access to the company’s connectivity offer, Air France Connect. The Air France Connect portal offers three passes, including a completely free pass allowing customers to send and receive messages and access information about flight connections.

Air France takes delivery of ‘Angers’, its twentieth A350-900

Air France continues to integrate latest-generation aircraft, with an improved economic and environmental performance, into its fleet.

On 25 November 2022, the airline welcomed its twentieth Airbus A350-900 into its fleet, registration F-HTYT. The aircraft has rolled off the Airbus assembly line in Toulouse and has completed its ferry flight to Paris-Charles de Gaulle, where it will operate on the airline’s long-haul routes.

It will make its first commercial flight on 26 November 2022, flying to Lima (flight AF480).

The front of the fuselage bears the name “Angers”, a tribute to this city in the West of France once home to the kings of France.

Since 2019 and the delivery of its first Airbus A350, Air France has revived the tradition of naming its aircraft after French towns. Before « Angers », Air France named its previous 19 Airbus A350 « Toulouse », « Lyon », « Saint-Denis de la Réunion », « Nice », « Bordeaux », « Marseille », « Reims », « Dijon », « Saint-Malo », « Cannes », « Aubusson », « Pointe-à-Pitre », « Fort-de-France », « Chambord », « Cayenne », « Lille », « Menton », « Deauville » and « Biscarosse ».

In total, the airline has ordered 38 Airbus A350-900s, with deliveries continuing at a steady pace through 2025.

By 2030, latest generation aircraft (Airbus A350s, Boeing 787s, Airbus A220s) will make up 70% of the Air France fleet - compared to 7% today – thanks to an ambitious investment plan of one billion euros per year.

The latest generation of environmentally friendly aircraft

The Airbus A350-900 symbolizes the transition to more sustainable air transport. It consumes 25% less fuel (2.5 litres per passenger per 100 kilometres) than an equivalent-sized, older airliner, thanks to the use of lighter materials: 53% composites and 14% titanium. Its noise footprint is also reduced by 40%.

The Airbus A350 has 324 seats, with 34 in the Business cabin, 24 in the Premium Economy cabin and 266 in the Economy cabin.

The Latvian Government funded airline airBaltic has started a new travel loyalty programme cooperation with the European carriers KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Air France. This partnership will offer the members of the airBaltic Club to earn loyalty points on airBaltic codeshare flights, operated by KLM or Air France, while also allowing to spend collected points on KLM and Air France flights all over the world.

Wolfgang Reuss, SVP Network Management of airBaltic: “We are delighted that our loyalty programs continue to expand and offer even more, especially now, in a strong cooperation with the largest European airline group – KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Air France. The opportunity to use loyalty benefits, covering the worldwide travel network from hubs in Amsterdam and Paris to more than 300 destinations, makes the airBaltic Club membership very desirable. Thus, we hope that soon more and more new members will join and use its advantages.”

The airBaltic Club is a loyalty program, where it is possible to earn loyalty points and collect stamps while travelling and receive various rewards. Members can earn points every time they fly airBaltic or use the services of other travel partners.

The loyalty programme is designed to be beneficial not only for frequent travellers, but also for those travelling occasionally. Customers, who travel less, can receive valuable rewards as well – for instance, free heavy baggage and advanced seat reservation among others.

On 1 October 2022, Arte Concert and France Musique will broadcast a special film by Andrew Staples and Daniel Harding featuring Igor Stravinsky’s ballet “The Firebird” in a dreamlike setting. Performed by the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, the film was made as close as possible to an Air France Airbus A350, in the company’s maintenance hangars.

For the filming in July 2021, Air France opened the doors of its hangars at Paris-Charles de Gaulle to capture some extraordinary images. 80 musicians from the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra took their places around one of the most modern aircraft in the Air France long-haul fleet. Under the direction of Daniel Harding, a renowned conductor and Air France pilot on the Airbus A320, they performed the Orchestral Suite from The Firebird, Igor Stravinsky’s timeless masterpiece.

The excellence and expertise of the worlds of music and travel came together to make this elegant and majestic film.

The project was the idea of Daniel Harding and tenor Andrew Staples, who wanted to bring music to atypical places for as many people as possible to enjoy. As an ambassador of the French travel experience and a promoter of culture since its creation, Air France immediately supported this initiative alongside Radio France, Arte, France Musique and the Camera Lucida production company.

Air France updates collection of long-haul comfort kits....

Photo Air France

On its long-haul flights, in the Business and Premium Economy cabins, Air France now offers a new collection of comfort kits. Developed with an eco-friendly approach and designed as genuine gifts, they can be kept, collected and reused after the flight.

Elegant and functional, these new kits will be available on board for an 18-month period. Their content will be renewed during this time to continue to offer ever more eco-responsible accessories and surprise frequent travellers.

Herringbone pattern kit in the Business cabin

The new Business kit features a stylish herringbone pattern and is available in two colours, navy blue and beige. It also features the winged seahorse, the airline’s historic emblem embodying its rich history. The Air France red zipper pull reminds us of the accent, the company’s brand symbol. This kit is made of 96% recycled material. Particular attention has also been paid to its contents:

A toothbrush and a pen made from maize straw, as well as earplugs wrapped in kraft paper to avoid using plastic on board;
For added comfort during the trip, a large, soft sleeping mask, a pair of socks and a tube of toothpaste;
Two cosmetic products from our Air France partner Clarins: the rejuvenating hand cream and the Hydra-essentiel moisturising cooling face gel (travel size).

In the Premium Economy cabin, the new kit features the airline’s signature stripy motif. There are two models available with a mix of deep blue and wide white stripes. Once again, the red zipper pull reminds us of the airline’s signature accent. The kit is made of 89% recycled material. It contains a toothbrush made from maize straw, a tube of toothpaste, ear plugs wrapped in kraft paper, as well as a pair of socks and a night mask

In all cabins, each kit’s plastic packaging has been replaced by an integrity seal. In addition, the systematic cleaning and disinfection of headphones has enabled Air France to do away with the single-use earphone covers that were previously offered, as well as their packaging.

By offering ever more eco-friendly kits, Air France is continuing its daily actions to limit the use of single-use plastic on board its flights whenever possible.
