Royal Brunei Airlines orders 4 Boeing 787 Dreamliners

Royal Brunei Airlines announced the purchase of four Boeing 787 Dreamliners to renew its widebody fleet at the Singapore Airshow. The carrier has selected the 787-9 to support its long-term growth strategy and sustainability goals.

"The forthcoming arrival of the 787-9 Dreamliner symbolizes a bold step forward in our ongoing journey toward innovation and excellence," said Sabirin bin Haji Abdul Hamid, CEO of Royal Brunei Airlines. "Royal Brunei Airlines has been operating the 787-8 for the last 10 years and this order will ensure we continue with a product that our customers have come to enjoy. In our constant effort to offer unparalleled service matched with the highest safety standards to our guests, the new fleet will allow us the potential to tap into new growth areas, strengthening our market appeal and enabling us to provide a superior travel experience to our guests."

Royal Brunei Airlines was the first Southeast Asian carrier to fly the 787 Dreamliner over a decade ago. With this 787-9 order, which was finalized in February and will be posted on Boeing's Orders & Deliveries, the airline can fly more passengers and cargo farther while operating more efficiently.

Happy anniversary Royal Brunei Airlines


Royal Brunei Airlines, the national airline of Brunei Darussalam was established on 18 November 1974 as an independent corporation wholly owned by the government of Brunei. The maiden flight took off from Bandar Seri Begawan to Singapore on 14th May, 1975 and since then, the airline has grown in leaps and bounds.

The airline connects Brunei to the world from its hub in Bandar Seri Begawan and thanks to a five-year business plan to update its fleet with new aircraft which now comprises a fleet of fourteen aircraft comprising of five Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft together with seven Airbus A320neo aircraft and two Airbus A320ceo. 

In 2018, it received the APEX Official Airline Rating Four-Star Award and as winners of TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Economy Class – Asia and Travellers’ Choice Regional Airlines – Asia. In the recent Skytrax airline rating, the airline moved up fourteen places to be at number 78 (from 92) in the top 100 airlines in the world.

Key Milestones over the years......


14 May 1975:  The maiden Royal Brunei Airlines flight to Singapore left Bandar Seri Begawan on a Boeing 737-200QC.
Flight to Kota Kinabalu also began the same day, whilst Hong Kong flew the next day.

12 December 1981:  RB added a third B737-200QC Combi to its fleet, expanding its network to Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta

June 1990:    RB took delivery of the first of three B767-200ER aircraft.

21 November 1990:  RB’s inaugural flight to London Gatwick

14 May 1991:  RB flew twice weekly to London Heathrow
Employed the use of Fokker 50 to service Miri and Labuan, two destinations important to the growth of Brunei’s oil and gas industry.
August and September 2003:   Took delivery of two new Airbus A319 aircraft.

December 2003 and January 2004:  Two more Airbus A320s were delivered. RB operates a fleet of six Boeing B767-300s, two Airbus A320s and two Airbus A319s.

16 May 2004:  RB flies daily to London via Dubai

June 2010:  RB’s newly-leased 777-200ER took off on its first commercial flight from Bandar Seri Begawan to London via Dubai.

6 November 2012:    RB becomes the first National flag carrier in Southeast Asia to appoint a female airline captain; Captain Sharifah Czarena Suriany Syed Hashim

May 2013:   RB launches Double Daily flights to Kuala Lumpur

12 October 2013:    Launching of a Betterfly; RB’s B787 Dreamliner. The first airline in Southeast Asia to operate the B787 Dreamliner

1 December 2013:  First Dreamliner flight to Long Haul flight to Dubai and London

3 April 2014:   Launch of RB’s first Dreamliner flight from Melbourne making RB the first airline in the world to offer a seamless Dreamliner long-haul flight from Melbourne to London via Brunei and Dubai.

5 May 2014:   RB signed with Airbus for seven Airbus A320neo aircraft

19 February 2016:  RB and Turkish Airlines sign codeshare agreement

17 March 2016:  Mr Karam Chand was appointed to be the Chief Executive Officer for Royal Brunei Airlines

12 July 2016:   RB signed codeshare with China Eastern Airlines

26 August 2016:  Hong Kong Airlines signed codeshare agreements with RB

16 August 2017:  RB signed codeshare agreements with Philippine Airlines

26 November 2017:   Launch of scheduled services to Seoul, South Korea

2 January 2018:   Launch of scheduled services to Nanning, China

25 May 2018:   RB welcomes the airline’s 1st Delivery of A320neo registered as V8-RBA from Toulouse, France

22 September 2018:  The official launch of the A320neo fleet

24 July 2019:  RB received 4-Star Airline quality rating certification from SKYTRAX

6 January 2021:  Captain Haji Khalidkhan Haji Asmakhan was appointed the Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Royal Brunei Airlines and Japan Airlines strike codeshare deal

Royal Brunei Airlines, the national airline of Brunei Darussalam, and Japan Airlines (JAL) today announced a codeshare agreement that will allow JAL to offer four weekly flights between Bandar Seri Begawan and Tokyo Narita.  Royal Brunei will place its code on flights to major cities in Japan, such as Sapporo New Chitose, Osaka Itami, Nagoya Chubu, and Fukuoka, offering greater options for RB guests.
Ticket sales will begin from February 14 on all channels and major GDS, for travels from February 17, 2020, subject to regulatory approvals.

Royal Brunei Airlines extend deal with British Airways and deferrs Changsha service start date again

The relationship between the UK British Airways and Royal Brunei Airways is being expanded and the new agreement sees the Brunei national carrier extend its network from 11 to 23 airports in the UK.

The new arrangement expands the two carriers relationship, which dates back to 2014 and sees British Airways offer even more domestic connections via Heathrow to UK regions, including Manchester and Glasgow, it will also offer connections from select European cities as well.  Passengers will be able to check bags through to their final destination and get boarding passes at the first check-in desk. Business class passengers will be able to access executive lounges of wither airline.

Brisbane added back into Royal Brunei Airlines route network

Royal Brunei Airlines has confirmed it will recommence its Brisbane route with the launch of four flights per week from 11th June 2019.

“RB is delighted to recommence services to Brisbane, a very popular destination for Bruneians and guests from our expanding route network. We have very good connections from the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, East Asia and South East Asia to/from Brisbane. Our guests will experience the very best of Bruneian hospitality flying on our fleet of B787 Dreamliners and A320NEO’s, one of the youngest fleet in the world with an average fleet age of two years” said Mr Karam Chand, Royal Brunei Airlines CEO.

Royal Brunei Airlines Launches codeshare flight to Mumbai, India with Air India

Royal Brunei Airlines has launched its daily codeshare flight to Mumbai, India with its latest codeshare partner Air India Limited (AI). The Bandar Seri Begawan – Singapore – Bandar Seri Begawan route will be operated by Royal Brunei Airlines while Air India will operate the Singapore – Mumbai – Singapore route. Both airlines have analysed a seamless connection for their guests with the following flight plan:

  Mr Karam Chand, Chief Executive Officer of RB said “We are very pleased to have partnered with Air India to provide our guests with more choices of destination. RB and Air India codeshare flights offer the best connection to Mumbai, India and vice versa and we believe will further enhance the tourism and business links between the two Countries.”

Mr Pradeep Singh Kharola, Chairman & Managing Director of AI said, “We are happy to establish codeshare partnership with Royal Brunei Airlines thereby expanding our network and offering wider connectivity to our esteemed passengers. This partnership launches Air India’s first services into Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei which will offer connectivity to Air India’s esteemed passengers travelling between India and Brunei.


Please note,   from 3rd April under the direction of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei from 3rd April, Brunei will introduce even stricter punishments including death by stoning as a punishment for homosexual sex and adultery. It is strongly advised that you check carefully before travelling to Brunei.

Royal Brunei Airlines to restart Taipei service.

Fourteen years after ending scheduled services to the city, Royal Brunei Airlines will be heading back to Taipei with a regular scheduled rotation.

The airline had a scheduled service to the capital of Taiwan until October 2004 although it continued to fly to the city during Chinese New Year peak celebrations with some charter flights.  However, from December this year, the carrier is bringing back the routing on a scheduled basis three times a week.

Royal Brunei has scheduled an Airbus A320 to serve the route from 3rd December, operating on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. The flight has a provisional timing of 1015 departure from Bandar Seri Begawan arriving in Taipei Taoyuan at 1345 local time.  The return flight looks to depart at 1500 landing back at Bandar Seri Begawan at 1830. 

The A320 is configured with 12 seats in business class, with a 44-inch seat pitch and 132 Economy cabin seats with a 31-32 inch pitch.

Royal Brunei takes delivery of its first A320neo

Bringing new levels of efficiency for the carrier’s regional network

Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) has taken delivery of its first A320neo aircraft during an event in Toulouse, France attended by Karam Chand, RBA Chief Executive Officer: Her Excellency Datin Paduka Malai Hajah Halimah binti Malai Haji Yussof, Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to France; and Eric Schulz, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer.

The aircraft is the first of seven A320neo ordered by the airline under its single-aisle fleet renewal programme. Powered by CFM International LEAP-1A26 engines, the new aircraft features a premium three class layout with 12 business class seats, 18 economy plus and 120 in the main cabin. The airline will operate the aircraft on its extensive regional network.

Royal Brunei has been flying A320 Family aircraft since 2003 and currently operates a fleet of six A320ceo jets.

The A320neo Family incorporates the very latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklets, which together deliver at least 15 percent fuel savings at delivery and 20 percent by 2020. With more than 6,000 orders received from 100 customers, the A320neo Family has captured nearly 60 percent share of the market.
