From 15 November, Etihad will increase cargo capacity to the US with 27 weekly passenger and freighter flights

Etihad Cargo, the cargo and logistics arm of Etihad Aviation Group, will offer an additional 50 tonnes of belly capacity via four new weekly direct passenger flights to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) from 15 November 2022. With the addition of these flights, the carrier will offer a total of 11 weekly flights between Abu Dhabi and New York.

In addition to offering 11 weekly flights to JFK, New York, Etihad Cargo provides capacity to other key destinations in the US via freighter and passenger flights to Chicago and Washington D.C. The carrier operates nine flights per week to Chicago O'Hare International Airport and daily flights to Dulles International Airport, Washington. The introduction of additional capacity to Etihad Cargo's winter schedule brings the total cargo capacity into and out of the US to 1,084 tonnes per week.

Existing daily services will continue on Etihad's new Airbus 350 aircraft, which has been deployed on the New York route since June 2022. The new flights will be operated with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. These aircraft types are two of the most efficient in the world, providing significantly less fuel burn and CO2 emissions than previous-generation twin-aisle aircraft. Etihad Cargo also operates two dedicated Boeing 777 freighter flights per week to Chicago via Europe, supported by an offline network.

Etihad Airways has firmed up its order with Airbus for seven new generation A350F freighters

Etihad Airways has firmed up its order with Airbus for seven new generation A350F freighters, following its earlier commitment announced at the Singapore Airshow.

Etihad Airways has firmed up its order with Airbus for seven new generation A350F freighters, following its earlier commitment announced at the Singapore Airshow. The freighters will upgrade Etihad’s freight capacity by deploying the most efficient cargo aircraft available in the market.

This order of the A350F sees the national carrier of the UAE expanding its relationship with Airbus, and adding to its existing order of the largest passenger version of A350-1000s, five of which have been delivered.

Tony Douglas, Group Chief Executive Officer, Etihad Aviation Group, said: “In building one of the world’s youngest and most sustainable fleets, we are delighted to extend our long-term partnership with Airbus to add the A350 Freighter to our fleet. This additional cargo capacity will support the unprecedented growth we are experiencing in the Etihad Cargo division. Airbus has developed a remarkable fuel-efficient aircraft that, in tandem with the A350-1000 in our passenger fleet, supports our commitment to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”

“Airbus is delighted to extend its long-standing partnership with Etihad Airways, who recently introduced the A350 passenger services and is continuing to build on the Family with the game-changing freighter version, the A350F,” said Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International. “This new generation large freighter brings unprecedented and unmatched benefits in terms of range, fuel efficiency and CO₂ savings, that support customers by enhancing operational efficiencies at the same time as reducing environmental impact.”

Etihad Cargo increases capacity to China.....

Etihad Cargo boosts services to China with the introduction of 15 direct passenger and freighter flights per week.

Etihad Cargo currently offers 15 direct passenger and freighter flights per week for China with cargo capacity of 2,708 tonnes.

Etihad recently announced the first regular direct international passenger flight into Beijing under the latest mandate of the Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism of the State Council in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The resumption of the direct air link between the two capitals, which complements the existing schedule of cargo flights to other key destinations in China, is another achievement of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the UAE and China.

Throughout the pandemic, the carrier remained committed to the market with a wide variety of capacity, including reconfigured cargo-only passenger freighters. From July onwards, it will continue to expand operations, focusing exclusively on direct passenger flights and dedicated 777 Freighter flights.

In addition to cargo capacity on passenger flights, Etihad Cargo also operates Boeing 777-200 freighter flights daily for Shanghai and six times per week for Hong Kong, bringing the total cargo capacity into and out of China to 2,708 tonnes per week.

Martin Drew, Senior Vice President Global Sales & Cargo at Etihad Aviation Group, said: “As the Chinese market starts to recover from COVID challenges and zero-COVID restrictions are lifted, Etihad is pleased to resume its passenger operations to Beijing and reaffirm our commitment to Etihad Cargo customers with the introduction of capacity on key trade lanes. These flights will connect China to the Middle East, Europe and the rest of the world via Etihad Cargo’s hub in Abu Dhabi.

Etihad Cargo Signs MOU with B Medical Systems for Sustainable Pharmaceutical Transportation Solutions

Etihad Cargo, the cargo and logistics arm of Etihad Aviation Group, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with B Medical Systems. The MOU, which was announced during the BIO International Convention, being held in San Diego, USA, from June 13-16, 2022, will see Etihad Cargo partner with B Medical Systems to develop and launch an airline-specific passive temperature-controlled solution for the transportation of life-saving drugs, vaccines and high-value pharmaceuticals.

Etihad Cargo has signed an MOU with B Medical Systems to become the first airline globally to develop and launch sustainable, temperature-controlled containers for the transportation of pharmaceuticals and life sciences.

Etihad Cargo will collaborate with Luxembourg-based manufacturer and global distributor of medical refrigeration devices, B Medical Systems, to develop more sustainable temperature-controlled container units that work on a passive cooling technology. The units will retain temperatures from -80 to 25 degrees Celsius for up to five days without requiring an external power source, with load capabilities ranging from two to 1,500 litres. Through the reduction in power needed to maintain the temperature for temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical shipments, these units will significantly reduce carbon emissions. Further adding to the sustainability of the containers, their robust design and multi-use capabilities enable an operational life of over ten years. B Medical Systems’ current product portfolio includes products that use solar energy as well as green refrigerants.

Martin Drew, Etihad Aviation Group's Senior Vice President – Sales & Cargo, said, "While other traditional active container providers are offering containers fit for multi-modal transportation, Etihad Cargo is the first airline globally to collaborate with a partner in the development and launch of units specifically tailored to air transportation.’

"Sustainability has been and continues to be a priority for Etihad Cargo," Drew continued. "While the aviation sector only accounts for 4 per cent of global carbon emission today, if the sector continues to grow at its current pace, it could account for up to 25 per cent of emissions by 2050. This is why it is so important for the sector to invest in more sustainable solutions for its customers. Partnering with B Medical Systems is the latest step by Etihad Cargo to achieve its sustainability targets. By replacing legacy active cold chain air transportation containers with aviation-specific units that consume less energy, Etihad Cargo is future-proofing the transportation of pharmaceuticals, providing a better solution for Etihad Cargo's customers, the aviation industry and the environment."

Mr. Jesal Doshi, Deputy CEO of B Medical Systems, said, "Our mission at B Medical Systems is to create technology that helps save lives across the world. Transportation of temperature-sensitive specimens needs a robust cold chain. Etihad Cargo's operational knowledge along with our expertise in creating quality medical cold chain solutions will enable us to develop aviation-specific sustainable units for the safe, effective, and environmentally friendly transportation of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals and specimens.”

Etihad Airways continues support of Russian flights and trade

The Abu Dubai based Etihad Airways is continuing its Moscow flights and support of Russian trade despite the horrendous humanitarian disaster in Ukraine caused by the Russian Invasion.  The airline's cargo staff are actively seeking new business including reaching out to those dealing in aviation spare parts, local reports indicate.

The sale or distribution of commercial aircraft spare parts is currently banned to Russia from Europe and the U.S. as a result of the conflict.

The carrier operates daily flights into Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport with Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.   Etihad continues to work with Aeroflot to enhance and develop its partnership, including the launch of codeshare services across the respective networks, and exploring other areas of cooperation to enhance guest benefits.

SkyCell is one of the global leaders in the field of manufacturing data-driven temperature-controlled containers for the pharmaceutical industry. Etihad Cargo is the cargo and logistics arm of the mammoth and award-winning Etihad Aviation Group.  So it, therefore, seems such a natural fir for the two companies to work in partnership to bring customers a wide range of solutions to transport their temperature-controlled pharmaceuticals in a safe, secure, and sustainable way.

SkyCell’s highly innovative hybrid containers will allow Etihad Cargo to optimise its supply chains by using data to predict and control risk. More than three-quarters of a billion data-points are available on factors like temperature, location, and time, the SkyCell containers also enable a failure rate of less than 0.1 per cent, while reducing CO2 emissions by almost half.

Both companies are committed to implementing sustainable practices across the pharma supply chain through SkyCell’s innovative hybrid containers and optimisation solutions

Tracked with IoT (‘Internet of Things’) sensors, hybrid containers monitor the temperature conditions inside and outside the containers to ensure the full efficacy of pharmaceuticals is maintained until they reach patients. In the process, SkyCell’s containers both reduce a shipment’s carbon footprint by up to 50 per cent due to their lightweight and efficient design. The containers are also capable of charging independently without the need of human intervention, and help reduce the amount of medical waste that ends up in landfill due to throw-away solutions and product loss caused by temperature excursions.
