For most of the time the flights are operated by Astraeus Airlines, which had been taken over by the same group, using 737 and 757 aircraft.
History
The airline was established in 2002 and began operations on 27 February 2003. In the Autumn of 2008, Astraeus Airlines started flying operations on behalf of Iceland Express with two Boeing 737-700 aircraft.
The airline was owned by Icelandic investment group, Northern Travel Holding. This was then purchased by Fons in September 2008, just prior to Fons bankruptcy the firm was passed to a sister company Fengur.
Fengur acquired 100% of Astraeus Airlines and the company started trans-Atlantic flights to Newark 4x a week and Winnipeg 2x a week and then started seasonal flights to various destinations including Orlando.
The carrier started to operating flights to Chicago, Boston, Miami, Belfast and Orlando and then introduced flights to Belfast and Miami.
On 24 October 2012, WOW Air acquired Iceland Express' operations and network. That budget carrier went out of business in March 2019, following unsuccessful takeover talks with Icelandair and Indigo Partners. A number of the senior executives from WOW announced their intention to start a new airline, that airline would go on to be called PLAY.
