RTX's Pratt & Whitney GTF Engines Surpass 950 Orders and Commitments in 2024

More than 11,000 GTF orders and commitments programme to date



Pratt & Whitney, announced more than 950 GTF engine orders and commitments since the beginning of 2024. Airlines and lessors that have announced orders include Avolon, Breeze Airways, Cebu Pacific, Icelandair, JetSMART, Mexicana, SKY Airline, SMBC, and Vietjet. In total, more than 11,000 GTF engine orders and commitments have been placed by more than 90 customers worldwide.

"These orders demonstrate continued customer confidence in Pratt & Whitney and the value the GTF engine offers with its world-class economic and environmental benefits," said Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney. "The GTF Advantage engine will extend this lead while providing more thrust and higher durability. We remain focused on executing all elements of the GTF fleet management plan including industrial output and material flow, GTF maintenance, repair and overhaul network expansion and ongoing customer support."  

The GTF delivers up to 20% better fuel efficiency than previous generation engines, saving airlines more than 1.7 billion gallons of fuel and the planet over 17 million metric tons of carbon emissions. GTF engines will continue to drive reductions in operating costs, new routes and revenue, and progress towards meeting the industry's sustainability goals. The engine's revolutionary geared fan architecture is the foundation for even more efficient propulsion technologies in the decades ahead.

RTX's Pratt & Whitney GTF engines to power 11 Airbus A220 aircraft for Air Niugini

Pratt & Whitney and Air Niugini have finalized engine and aftermarket agreements for the GTF engines that will power the airline's fleet of 11 Airbus A220 aircraft. Pratt & Whitney will provide a full suite of support services with a 12-year EngineWise® Comprehensive agreement. With this order, Air Niugini becomes a first-time GTF customer.


"GTF engines offer unmatched payload and range, enabling Air Niugini to open new routes internationally, while benefitting from industry-leading fuel efficiency, and we look forward to supporting the airline's fleet in the years ahead," said Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney.

Air Niugini is the national carrier of Papua New Guinea based in the capital Port Moresby. It operates an extensive domestic network as well as internationally to Australia, Asia and the Pacific. The airline's new fleet will deliver more capacity and greater reliability throughout its network.

SKY Airline selects RTX's Pratt & Whitney GTF engine to power up to 39 Airbus A320neo family aircraft

Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business, announced that Chilean-based SKY Airline has entered into a memorandum of understanding to select the GTF engine to power 10 firm Airbus A321XLR aircraft, with options for 29 Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft. With this selection, SKY Airline becomes a first-time Pratt & Whitney customer.

"This selection is a testament to SKY Airline's confidence in the GTF engine over the long term," said Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney. "These engines and aircraft will enable SKY to continue its route expansion while delivering industry-leading fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions."

Pratt & Whitney plans to provide long-term maintenance services via an EngineWise™ Comprehensive service agreement.

Leasing giant Avolon orders 310 engines at Farnborough Air Show

160 engines ordered from Pratt & Whitney and 150 from CFM International
Engine orders valued at over US$5 billion at current list prices
Options to purchase 310 further engines


Avolon, a leading global aviation finance company, announces orders for 310 new engines to power 155 Airbus A320neo family aircraft in its order book. Avolon has ordered 160 GTF engines from Pratt & Whitney, and 150 LEAP-1A engines from CFM International.

The combined orders, announced today at the Farnborough Airshow, are valued at over US$5 billion at current list prices. The agreement also includes options to purchase a further 160 Pratt & Whitney engines and 150 CFM International engines. The orders represent Avolon’s largest ever engine commitment.

Both engine types help to lower carbon emissions by delivering at least 15% reduced fuel consumption compared to previous generation engine technology, and also reduced noise levels. Transitioning the global fleet to new technology aircraft is the biggest near-term action that can be taken to reduce aviation emissions, and Avolon is committed to a target of having over 75% of its fleet comprising the youngest, most fuel-efficient aircraft by the end of 2025. Beyond its 2025 target, the evolution of its fleet will be supported by deliveries of the A320 neo family aircraft out to 2032 that these engines will power.


Avolon currently has 115 A320neo family aircraft in its delivered and managed fleet, of which 39 are powered by Pratt & Whitney engines and 76 by CFM International engines. Following its order for 100 A321neo aircraft in December 2023, Avolon now has an orderbook of 279 A320neo family aircraft.

RTX's Pratt & Whitney delivers F100 engine in support of Poland's F-16 Fighting Falcon fleet

F100 engine
Pratt & Whitney, an RTX  business, has announced the delivery of an F100 engine to Poland. This delivery supports Poland's ongoing efforts to strengthen the readiness of its F-16 fleet, which is powered exclusively by Pratt & Whitney engines.

"This is the first of several engines we'll deliver to our Polish ally this year to ensure they have the propulsion power they need to address current and future threats," said Josh Goodman, senior director of the F100 Program at Pratt & Whitney. "The Pratt & Whitney F100 is the mainstay powerplant for 23 global air forces, and we are seeing increased demand for our latest generation F100 engine."

Currently produced in Middletown, Connecticut, the original F100 engines powering the Polish F-16 fleet were manufactured at Pratt & Whitney's Rzeszów facility. Today, nearly 20 years later, that facility produces F100 static structures and critical rotating parts in support of new F100 engines and worldwide sustainment.

The F100 boasts operationally proven technologies, such as advanced materials and thermal coatings, improved turbine cooling capabilities and prognostic health management. Across global F-16 and F-15 fleets, the F100 has flown more than 30 million engine flight hours, which is nearly three times as many hours as other fourth-generation fighter engines.

Avolon selects RTX's Pratt & Whitney GTF engines to power up to 160 Airbus A320neo family aircraft

The agreement is Avolon's first direct GTF engine order


Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business, announced this week, that Avolon has selected GTF engines to power 80 Airbus A320neo family aircraft. The order means Avolon will have 158 GTF-powered aircraft in its delivered and committed fleet, with options for engines to power 80 additional aircraft.

This order represents one of Pratt & Whitney's largest transactions with a lessor for its GTF engines.

"We are building on our collaboration with Avolon, who remains at the forefront of the lessor community," said Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney. "GTF engines will provide Avolon's customers with unmatched fuel efficiency and the lowest carbon emissions available for single-aisle aircraft."

Avolon currently has a portfolio of 81 V2500-powered A320ceo family aircraft and 39 GTF-powered A320neo family aircraft in its delivered fleet.  Working with 142 airlines in 63 countries, Avolon has an owned, managed, and committed fleet of 1,029 aircraft, as of 30 June 2024.

SMBC Aviation Capital confirms an additional 42 Airbus A320neo family aircraft powered by RTX's Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines

 
One of the largest GTF engine lessors now owns, manages, and has firm commitments for 142 GTF-powered aircraft

Pratt & Whitney announced this week that SMBC Aviation Capital, one of the largest lessors for GTF- powered A320neo family aircraft, has exercised options for 22 firm orders. This is supplemental to a 2021 order for 20 additional firm aircraft, bringing the lessor's additional commitment to 42 firm A320neo family aircraft equipped with GTF engines.

SMBC Aviation Capital announced its initial selection for 50 firm Pratt & Whitney A320neo family aircraft in 2019, and currently manages a portfolio of 142 GTF-powered A320neo family aircraft. Today's announcement affirms the relationship between two global leaders in the aviation space.

RTX's Pratt & Whitney and SR Technics announce first GTF engine induction

Swiss shop becomes the 17th active facility in the growing GTF MRO network


Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business, and SR Technics announced this week the induction of the first Pratt & Whitney GTF engine at the MRO service provider's Zurich-based facility. SR Technics will provide full disassembly, assembly and test capability for the PW1100G-JM engine for the Airbus A320neo aircraft family.

"Today, we extend our relationship with SR Technics, which began 35 years ago with maintenance on the PW4000 engine," said Marc Meredith, vice president of commercial aftermarket for GTF engines at Pratt & Whitney. "With their top-tier performance history, SR Technics will continue to deliver industry-leading services providing vital support for the expanding GTF fleet."

Pratt & Whitney is committed to expanding GTF MRO capacity with industry-leading providers such as SR Technics to support the growing aftermarket demand. In 2023 alone, Pratt & Whitney announced three GTF MRO facility expansions and six shop activations to support the growing GTF fleet. SR Technics, which joined the Pratt & Whitney GTF MRO network in 2022, marks the 17th active location and the seventh facility in Europe.

RTX's Pratt & Whitney Canada and Angola's TAAG Airlines sign Fleet Management™ Program agreement for PW150A engines

Pratt & Whitney Canada and TAAG Angola Airlines E.P., Angola's state-owned airline, have signed a six-year Fleet Management™ Program (FMP) agreement. The engine maintenance services cover the airline's PW150A engines which power their fleet of Dash 8-400 regional turboprops. The agreement allows Pratt & Whitney to tailor coverage to meet the airline's operating environment. Pratt & Whitney is an RTX business.


"Airlines that provide regional connectivity such as TAAG play a vital role in helping customers travel to major urban centers, often for connections to international destinations," says Irene Makris, vice president, Customer Service, Pratt & Whitney Canada. "Consequently, the dispatch reliability of regional aircraft plays a critical role in keeping the entire ecosystem operating efficiently and economically. The agreement also includes Pratt & Whitney's proprietary oil-analysis technology and its FAST™ diagnostic and prognostic solution which captures, analyzes and wirelessly sends full-flight data intelligence to the customer within minutes of engine shutdown.

RTX's Pratt & Whitney announces North American Technology Accelerator

RTX's Pratt & Whitney has released details of its North American Technology Accelerator (NATA), a commercial and military aftermarket operations centre of excellence based in Florida. The NATA will have dedicated floor space, equipment and resources for the development and industrialization of technology insertion programs that will support the company's global maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) network.


The accelerator projects in Florida are primarily focused on material restoration and process automation including advanced repairs, digital inspection, adaptive processing, and coating and masking for compressor and fan parts, blades, cases, and more. The benefits of these technologies will reduce cost, material demand, and environmental impact, while decreasing turn times, improving throughput, and delivering value to customers. 

"NATA combines data science with people know-how and state-of-the-art automation to help address customer pain points such as inventory management and part availability, while accelerating our improved repair capabilities and efficiency to better serve our customers," said Kevin Kirkpatrick, vice president, Aftermarket Global Operations at Pratt & Whitney.

Key projects include additive repairs for critical GTF engine components. With this new additive repair technology alone, Pratt & Whitney expects to recover $100 million worth of parts over next five years to support GTF MRO ramp.

RTX's Pratt & Whitney collaborates with FAA to study non-CO2 emissions under FAA ASCENT program

Tests will compare emissions from conventional Jet A and 100% SAF 


Pratt & Whitney, an RTX  business and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will work together with Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), Aerodyne Research, Inc., and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to study non- CO2 aviation emissions, to help understand and reduce the environmental impact of those emissions. As part of the FAA's ASCENT program, the project will measure emissions from a Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engine combustor rig test stand using conventional Jet A and 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

"As the aviation industry targets a goal of net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050, we continue to pay close attention to addressing the environmental impact of other emissions, including cruise non-volatile particulate matter and NOx," said Sean Bradshaw, senior technical fellow of sustainable propulsion at Pratt & Whitney. "Combustor rig tests with 100% SAF provide a controlled environment for generating valuable baseline data, which will support future studies using full scale engines on-wing at ground and flight test conditions."

The project will compare emissions from Jet A kerosene and SAF comprised of 100% Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene (HEFA-SPK), a biofuel derived from vegetable oils and animal fats; the fuel is supplied by World Energy.

IAE AG successfully tests V2500 engine on 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel

The test demonstrates a commitment to supporting greater use of SAF

IAE International Aero Engines AG (IAE) announced it has successfully tested the V2500 engine with 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at MTU Maintenance Hannover, Germany. IAE is a multinational consortium comprised of Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business, Pratt & Whitney Aero Engines International GmbH, Japanese Aero Engines Corporation and MTU Aero Engines AG. The V2500 engine currently powers the A320ceo family aircraft and the Embraer C-390 Millenium.


IAE AG successfully tests V2500 engine on 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel


"This test with 100% SAF demonstrates that V2500 engines can continue contributing towards making aviation more sustainable in the decades ahead," said Kim Kinsley, president, IAE AG, and vice president, Mature Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney. "With nearly 3,000 V2500-powered aircraft in service today, IAE recognizes our important role in supporting the industry's goal to meet net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. We anticipate the majority of our eight IAE company shops will be prepared to use SAF in their operations in the next few years."

The V2500 engine test was run on 100% Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosine (HEFA-SPK) fuel supplied by Neste. HEFA-SPK is produced by hydrotreating renewable raw materials, such as waste oils or fats, into an aviation turbine fuel and is a prominent sustainable alternative to conventional jet fuels. Pratt & Whitney continues collaborating closely with the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI) and ASTM International towards the goal of developing future specifications for 100% SAF.

"MTU Maintenance Hannover is the first maintenance, repair and overhaul facility worldwide to carry out a 100% SAF test on a V2500," said Michael Schreyögg, Chief Program Officer, MTU Aero Engines. "This test demonstrates our commitment to supporting greater use of SAF across both our entire network and the broader industry. We remain dedicated to working with IAE, suppliers and partners to ensure not only that our products are capable of operating with SAF but also that our maintenance, repair and overhaul infrastructure can support all operators and owners with their SAF testing requirements."

Icelandair selects RTX’s Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines to power up to 35 Airbus A320neo family aircraft.
Pratt & Whitney, confirmed this week that Icelandair has selected GTF engines to power up to 35 new Airbus A320neo family aircraft, comprising a mix of leased and purchased A321XLR and A321LR aircraft. With this order, Icelandair becomes a first-time GTF customer. The airline has also selected an EngineWise® agreement for the long-term maintenance, repair and overhaul of its GTF engines. Pratt & Whitney will provide support to facilitate smooth entry into service and long-term operation of the engines.

Vietjet selects RTX's Pratt & Whitney to power 19 additional A321neo aircraft

GTF engines selected for follow-on A321neo order


Pratt & Whitney, an RTX  business, and new-age airline Vietjet announced that the airline has exercised options for an additional 19 firm GTF-powered A321neo aircraft. Pratt & Whitney will also provide Vietjet with engine maintenance through an EngineWise® Comprehensive service agreement. A signing ceremony took place at the Singapore Airshow with representatives from both companies.

Vietjet is a rapidly growing airline with an expansive fleet and flight network. Vietjet Chief Executive Officer Dinh Viet Phuong, said. We are confident about the GTF-powered aircraft that provide fuel efficiency and reduce the environmental impact. Vietjet received its first A321neo aircraft in 2018 and currently operates a fleet of 24 GTF-powered A321neo aircraft. Combined with the airline's previous orders, Vietjet has committed to up to 87 aircraft of this type.

JetSMART opts for Pratt & Whitney GTF engines to power its latest order of Airbus jets

JetSMART selects RTX’s Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines to power an additional 35 Airbus A320neo family aircraft.
RTX subsidiary Pratt & Whitney, has revealed JetSMART has selected GTF engines to power an additional 35 Airbus A320neo family aircraft, including nine A321XLR aircraft. Pratt & Whitney will also provide JetSMART with GTF engine maintenance through an EngineWise® Comprehensive service agreement. 

JetSMART, an ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC), selected the GTF engine to power 70 A320neo family aircraft in June 2019. The airline also operates an additional 15 leased GTF powered A320neo family aircraft and a fleet of 11 A320ceo family aircraft powered by the V2500® engine.

"We are building upon our collaboration with JetSMART as they drive continued expansion in the Latin American market," said Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney. Pratt & Whitney ramps up aftermarket repair industrialization for GTF components in Singapore.

Pratt & Whitney confirmed during the Singapore Airshow that it is ramping up the industrialization of repairs for certain components of Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines across its Singapore-based maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities, including Component Aerospace Singapore, Pratt & Whitney Component Solutions, and Turbine Overhaul Services.  Repair industrialization at these three facilities has been achieved for 33 components, including seal assemblies, high-pressure compressor stator segments and vanes, and combustion chambers. An additional 25 will be completed in 2024 with another 177 parts by 2025. 

"The investment and collaboration on repair development and capacity growth within our facilities, not just in Singapore but across our global MRO network, demonstrates our commitment to customers and the GTF fleet," said Shangari Meleschi, vice president, Aftermarket Operations – Asia Pacific and Türkiye at Pratt & Whitney. "In addition to enhancing engine MRO efficiency, we are increasing the capabilities and productivity of our technicians and providing new opportunities for them to expand their skillset." 

Pratt & Whitney's industrialization also empowers the three repair facilities in Singapore to now perform certain tasks that were previously conducted at Eagle Services Asia as a result of the close proximity to the Singapore engine center. Leveraging this synergy, Pratt & Whitney will extend the repair offerings developed in Singapore across the GTF MRO network. Pratt & Whitney currently has 30 GTF customers with over 600 GTF-powered aircraft in the region.

Pratt & Whitney GTF engines selected for follow-on A320neo and A321neo order


Pratt & Whitney, an RTX  business, was selected by Cebu Pacific Air to provide GTF engines to power an additional 10 A321neo and five A320neo aircraft. Pratt & Whitney will also provide Cebu Pacific with GTF engine maintenance through an EngineWise® Comprehensive service agreement.

"Pratt & Whitney has been providing GTF power to Cebu Pacific since 2019," said Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney. "With deliveries for this most recent order starting in 2025, the GTF engine will provide even more fuel and carbon emissions savings."

Cebu Pacific currently has 33 GTF-powered A320neo family aircraft in service. Prior to providing GTF power, Pratt & Whitney supplied JT8D engines for the airline's DC-9 aircraft. Pratt & Whitney and Cebu Pacific's relationship extends back to the 1990s.

RTX's Pratt & Whitney Canada adds helicopter engine overhaul capability at Singapore facility.

Pratt & Whitney Canada announced this week it will expand its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capabilities by creating a new overhaul line in Singapore for its PT6C-67C engines, which power the Leonardo AW139 medium-twin helicopter. Pratt & Whitney is an RTX  business.

The Singapore facility was chosen as the location for the new overhaul line in response to a growing demand for advanced maintenance solutions for the P6TC-67C engine and the evolving needs of customers around the world. A new modular test cell will also be established at the facility as part of the new capability setup. The new overhaul line and test cell are expected to be fully operational by 2025.

RTX's Pratt & Whitney Opens Expansion Site at Eagle Services Asia Facility in Singapore

(SINGAPORE AIRSHOW) Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business, has announced the official opening of a 48,000 square-foot expansion of its Singapore-based engine centre, Eagle Services Asia (ESA). The facility will grow its GTF capacity by two-thirds this year.

Pratt & Whitney’s Eagle Services Asia will grow its GTF capacity by two thirds in 2024.

"This expansion demonstrates our commitment to building industrial capacity by continuing to invest in our strategic sites around the world to support our customers," said Shang Meleschi, vice president of Aftermarket Operations – Asia Pacific and Türkiye at Pratt & Whitney. "We are bringing together talent from our engine centre, technologies from the Singapore Technology Accelerator and innovative practices from across Pratt & Whitney to improve MRO performance for our GTF fleet."

The transformative technology insertion applied across both ESA sites integrates robotics, automation and machine learning to increase efficiency, lower stress on machine operators and increase safety for key MRO processes.

These innovations include fully automated high-pressure compressor (HPC) rotor stacking, a Receive-in-Check Cobot that augments the work done by human inspectors and a robotic arm to install and remove HPC bearing sleeves.

ESA, a joint venture between SIA Engineering Company and Pratt & Whitney, is a member of the Pratt & Whitney GTF™ MRO network. Since introducing GTF MRO capability in 2019, the facility has already completed over 500 GTF engine overhauls.

In 2023, Pratt & Whitney announced three GTF MRO facility expansions and six shop activations to support the growing GTF fleet. There are currently 15 active GTF MRO engine centres around the world, with seven locations in the Asia Pacific region including ESA in Singapore, Korean Airlines in Korea, IHI and MHIAEL in Japan, MTU Maintenance Zhuhai and AMECO in China, and China Airlines in Taiwan. By 2025, the company expects to have 19 active GTF MRO shops worldwide.

Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business has just announced the significant progress in advancing maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) performance spearheaded by the opening of its Singapore Technology Accelerator (STA).


In September 2022, Pratt & Whitney announced the intent to establish the technology accelerator in collaboration with the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). STA has since delivered over 30 innovations which will maximize the productivity in MRO processes. STA is also working with more than 20 Singapore companies to develop new, relevant technologies in the global commercial aviation sector.

Applied across four Pratt & Whitney Singapore-based MRO facilities, STA technology projects focus on automation, advanced inspection, connected factory and digital twin, developed to improve MRO shop performance.
