SkyUp Airlines select IBS Software to power restart of commercial operations

Ukraine's largest airline, SkyUp Airlines, and its Maltese subsidiary, SkyUp Malta, have selected IBS Software to empower its commercial operations. IBS Software, a global leader of SaaS solutions to the travel and cargo industry, is providing a digitally native passenger services system (PSS) to allow SkyUp to overhaul its previous platform and deliver greater flexibility as it recommences the scheduled flights.

SkyUp, a digital-first airline, has attracted widespread attention for its innovative actions since the start of the war, including the evacuation of its aircraft from closed airspace, its pivot to become an ACMI provider, and most recently achieving an Air Operator Certificate in Malta so the airline can operate anywhere in Europe. As SkyUp Airlines gears up to restart full-scale operations in EU following its temporary stint as an ACMI and charter airline, transforming its inhouse IT system into a world-class PSS is a significant part of its journey.

IBS Software’s cloud and NDC-native PSS platform will enable SkyUp to react to changing market conditions, giving them the ability to dynamically price fares and ancillary services and handle continuous pricing via a multitude of distribution channels. Importantly, the new platform also allows SkyUp to run both its core airline and Maltese subsidiary from one platform, enabling the airline to feed their inhouse tour operator and rapidly expanding partner network of travel agencies via their direct channel.

"We are excited to partner with IBS Software, a like-minded partner with innovation at its core, to power the restart of our commercial operations," said Lyudmyla Slobodianiuk, CCO of SkyUp Airlines. "IBS Software's cloud-native PSS will provide the platform for us to move quickly and adapt to changing market conditions. We are convinced the partnership will be an important foundation for future success."

"We are delighted to be selected by SkyUp Airlines to power the restart of commercial operations," said Benjamin Simmons, Vice President and Regional Head of Europe and Africa at IBS Software. "It is an honour to work with such a resilient and innovative airline as it continues to transform its business to overcome the adversity of both COVID and war. By supporting its commitment to replace legacy systems with next generation technology to serve its customers, we look forward to supporting SkyUp as it starts a new and exciting chapter in its history.”

British holidaymakers see red after delays of just over an hour new research finds.

UK holidaymakers say it takes a delay of just 64 minutes to make them see red, according to research commissioned by travel technology specialist IBS Software. As many as 71% of British people who have travelled abroad in the last year had a flight either delayed or cancelled, with a further 45% admitting they worry future travel plans will be disrupted.

This latest research seems to indicate that transparent and timely communications from airlines are vital in minimising the impact of flight disruption for passengers. 58% that's nearly six in ten of those affected by delays have struggled to find out why their plans have been thrown into turmoil, while 16% head straight to social media to bemoan the airlines.

Sixty-one per cent of the respondents don’t always feel flight delays or cancellations are explained properly to passengers and forty-five per cent become frustrated because they haven’t been informed about how the issues the airlines are experiencing will be resolved.

The knock-on impact of flight delays is also now causing holidaymakers to reconsider their travel plans. UK travellers said that if their flights were badly disrupted again this summer, they would reconsider the airline they use 26%, be more likely to opt for a staycation that didn’t require air travel 18% and they’d consider alternative modes of transport 16%.

The research indicated 31% of passengers who have experienced flight delays or cancellations have received compensation for the problems they incurred. However, of those who have, more than half - 53% said it didn’t make up for missing out on the precious holiday time lost.

Philip Hinton, SVP at IBS Software, added: “Adverse weather, secondary delays and other operational issues are a daily challenge for airlines, but the industry can help regain confidence with passengers by using advanced technology to reduce the impact of disruptions in a faster and more effective way and to communicate clearly with the passengers.

The research shows a significant number of passengers would be more understanding with a delay if they were just kept in the loop. Too often the legacy IT systems that many airlines use can exacerbate delays.”

84 per cent of holidaymakers would be more understanding when it comes to delays or cancellations if the airlines were transparent about the issues they are encountering.

It should be noted that the research was carried out by OnePoll, which specializes in creating PR survey, surveying just 1,330 UK adults who have flown abroad in the last 12 months, between 15th and 21st August 2023.

Lounge access and upgrades are the top benefits.......

IBS Software, a global leader of SaaS solutions to the travel industry, reveals the results of a survey of 1500 air passengers based in Hong Kong, Singapore or United Arab Emirates (UAE). The majority (63%) of respondents, which included both leisure and business travellers, are members of an airline loyalty program and nearly 80% also choose to be part of schemes at supermarkets (44%), clothing brands (36%), and restaurants (33%).

Despite the widespread adoption of Airline Loyalty Programs (ALP), the results reveal passengers feel unable to make the most of them with over half (58%) unsure where they can redeem points and 56% unaware of the value of their points; this figure jumps to 64% in Singapore and the UAE.

Of the 37% of respondents who either have never been a member of a loyalty program or whose membership has lapsed, the main reason cited (after not flying frequently enough to make it worthwhile) is a lack of awareness of the benefits (30%). The perception that it's too hard to build up points is the third most common reason for avoiding loyalty programs with nearly a quarter (23%) and this figure jumps to a third (33%) of non-members in Singapore.

However, despite the apathy amongst non-members, there is an opportunity for airlines to tempt them to sign up. 58% of respondents not already part of a loyalty program would be willing to try one in the future and this increases to 67% in the 26-35 year old age bracket and 64% in the UAE region. Hong Kong residents seem the most reluctant to try loyalty programs with just 46% considering it in the future. Easy check-ins (46%) and cabin class upgrades (44%) are highlighted as the two top reasons a non-member would be willing to sign up.

Of the respondents who are already members (63%), they belong to an average of at least two airline loyalty programs. Exclusive access to lounges (32%) and cabin class upgrades (31%) are seen as the top benefits for this group. For leisure travellers, class upgrades and points not expiring are the most appealing benefits, while a fast track check-in, immediate rewards and free tickets to events appeal more to business travellers.

Marcus Puffer, Vice President & Head of Loyalty Solutions at IBS Software, said -- "It's incumbent on airlines to ensure their program members are aware of the benefits of their loyalty schemes, or they risk losing their interest in being part of the club. VIP lounges and class upgrades are fantastic perks but if a member doesn't feel confident in how to build up their bank of points or, worse, know how to use them, the selection of benefits becomes irrelevant."

*The survey was conducted online by YouGov. The study polled 1500 travellers from Singapore, Hong Kong and Dubai who have travelled by air in the last 18 months.

83% of consumers are planning to fly to a leisure destination in the next six months

93% would buy services like excursions and car rental from their airline  if they could

56% would be more likely to spend on extras if the online buying experience improved to be more like retail, fashion and groceries

New survey data from travel tech company IBS Software, reveals a massive 93% of UK and US consumers would book more services with airlines given the chance - representing a huge opportunity for airlines.

The study, which looked into UK and US airline passengers' expectations of airlines, shows that following a challenging period of travel uncertainty, passenger confidence is recovering with 83% of respondents planning to purchase tickets in the next six months. However, the research also points to airlines’ failings to maximise this opportunity with over a third (36%) of those asked stating that booking a flight online is more time consuming and complicated than other online retail experiences.

As many as 56% of recent flyers would buy additional services from an airline if the booking and checkout online shopping experience was closer to that of fashion retailers and online food shops. One in ten even said they would book all elements of a holiday with their airline if they could.

More travel disruption feared as passengers take to the skies this holiday season

8% UK and US passengers experienced travel disruption since COVID

83% still planning a festive or early 2023 break
66% expect travel chaos to taint their upcoming trips
55% will boycott an airline if their next holidays are similarly disrupted
93% of passengers say reputation for arriving on time is a major factor in their decision to buy a ticket
New data from travel technology company IBS Software reveals that despite more than two thirds (68%) of passengers being inconvenienced by disrupted journeys since COVID travel restrictions were lifted and 66% expecting more of the same during upcoming trips, most (83%) still plan on flying for a break in the next six months.

The research, which polled 2000 recent travellers in the UK and US*, warns that holiday providers have one more chance to get it right; if holidaymakers experience disruptions again during their upcoming trips, over half (55%) will avoid booking with the airline in the future. When asked who they blame for their poor experiences, 50% said it was the fault of the airlines when flights were delayed, with just 13% blaming the airport. However, when it comes to lost luggage the jury is out - 42% say it’s the airport’s responsibility and 40% are seething at the airline.

Photo by Markus Spiske on Unsplash
Delayed flights or missed connections was the most common holiday hurdle, affecting over a third of all passengers (35%), followed closely by waiting in longer than normal queues (31%) and cancelled flights (15%). Lost luggage, which dominated the news headlines in the Summer, is confirmed by the research as a major annoyance, blighting nearly 1 in 7 passengers’ holidays over the last 18 months.

Despite a clear desire to travel, passengers won’t accept more disruption without protest. If passengers find out their journey is going to be disrupted, 53% will complain to the airline and 38% will use social media to broadcast their annoyance. And if an airline doesn’t have a reputation for punctuality they’re likely to lose out with 93% of travellers saying this is an important factor when deciding which airline to buy from.

However, there is still an opportunity for airlines to win back the loyalty of their passengers. When terminal turmoil occurs, passengers can be placated by automatic refunds when eligible; proactive customer support to suggest alternative routes; and automatic alerts on their phone when something goes wrong. As one passenger who took the survey commented: “Just actually organise yourselves properly, there’s no excuse for all the disruption”.

Philip Hinton, SVP, IBS Software, comments: “The pent-up desire to travel was always going to put airlines and airports under extreme pressure - and so it proved, with widespread disruption plaguing many long-anticipated journeys. Airlines know this is a major issue but there is a window of opportunity to put a greater focus on improving performance and customer satisfaction. We see that airlines are prioritising operations because the widespread issues have directly impacted business performance.”

About the research

*The survey was conducted online by Censuswide between Monday 28th November and Wednesday 30th November. 1000 consumers who have travelled by air for leisure in the last 18 months in both the US and UK responded.

Lufthansa Cargo Celebrates 10 Years of Transforming Core Cargo Business with IBS Software

This month, Lufthansa Cargo celebrates 10 years of transforming its global air cargo business with IBS Software. Over the past decade, IBS Software has successfully partnered with Lufthansa Cargo to create a modern, agile and innovation-focused business, built on the strong foundation of iCargo – IBS' market-leading cargo platform.

In celebration of their ten-year, and ongoing, partnership, Lufthansa Cargo and IBS Software reflect on the journey to revolutionize Lufthansa's entire air cargo movement worldwide

The partnership began when Lufthansa Cargo made the decision to replace its core IT platform - a mainframe system called Mosaik - in 2012. This was a 30-year-old legacy technology, which formed the nerve centre of its operation; changing it was considered a project of immense complexity and risk. Consequently, Lufthansa Cargo carried out a rigorous market search during which 400+ potential suppliers and partners were evaluated. IBS Software and its iCargo offering were selected based on the strength of the offering, the capability and experience of its teams and the high level of congruence in future strategy.

For Lufthansa Cargo, IBS Software served not only the immediate goal of significantly upgrading its operational core but also further consolidated its IT landscape by bringing other, Lufthansa Cargo-built applications under the iCargo umbrella. The highly complex transformation project - named iCAP - involved more than 300 global locations across the Lufthansa Cargo network and its major hubs in Europe, including the Frankfurt mega-hub.

The outcome of iCAP was an integrated solution that supports the requirements of the airlines' freight business, providing enhanced web-enabled features that optimize operations, enhance profitability, and provide scalability. The solution helps manage the increasing volumes of cargo movement requirements of freighters, ground handling agents (GHAs), as well as airports. Buoyed by the success of the initial phase of the project, Lufthansa moved to a full SaaS (Software as a Service) model of software delivery for iCargo in 2020, entrusting the full ownership of hosting and maintenance of Lufthansa Cargo's iCAP platform to IBS Software.

Lufthansa Cargo and IBS Software also continued to innovate and develop several industry firsts and implement innovative business practices such as the iPartner Handling platform in 2021. This deployment represented significant progress for Lufthansa Cargo's 'Mobile Digital Handling' initiative, created to eliminate paper-based processes across its operations by digitizing tasks and process checks carried out by its GHA partners to enable best-in-class customer experience. These efforts have culminated in Lufthansa Cargo recently achieving 100% eFreight adoption, which is the industry benchmark.

Dorothea von Boxberg, Chairman of the Executive Board at Lufthansa Cargo, says: "IBS has been a strong partner in guiding us on our digitization journey over the years. From the replacement of legacy IT systems to the laying of the foundation stone in the area of digital fulfilment to the development of more far-reaching IT solutions - which have now been the backbone in our IT operations. It is our goal to continue to work together to drive the digital transformation of our industry, improving data quality and connectivity with our customers in the process, and making our own processes more efficient as well. Together, we are creating considerable added value, especially for our customers."

Ashok Rajan, SVP, Head of Cargo & Logistics at IBS Software, says: "I view our decade-strong partnership with Lufthansa Cargo with immense pride. It truly represents what can be accomplished through a partnership that goes above and beyond that of a buyer-supplier relationship. Our partnership has created several innovative business practices, many are industry firsts revolutionizing and improving quality across cargo operations in a rapidly changing industry. IBS is looking forward to continuing to drive value with and for Lufthansa for many years to come."

Dr Jochen Göttelmann, CIO at Lufthansa Cargo, says: "We look back on the existing ten-year partnership with IBS in a thoroughly positive light. Together, we have further developed iCargo as a product in such a way that it provides us with excellent services on a daily basis at our Global Handling Hub in Frankfurt and in our worldwide operations. The intensive cooperation between IBS as a technology market leader and Lufthansa Cargo as an innovation driver makes our collaboration special to this day. The IBS teams convince us every time - with their know-how, but also with their commitment to live up to our claim of implementing innovations in airfreight. We are very much looking forward to furthering our cooperation."

Singapore Airlines Goes Live with New Integrated Cargo Management System, Powered by IBS Software’s iCargo Platform

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has successfully gone live with its new Integrated Cargo Management System (ICMS), powered by IBS Software’s iCargo cargo management platform. The ICMS is a strategic initiative to future-proof SIA’s core cargo platform by eliminating disparate cargo systems and bringing in the latest cloud technology to transform cargo operations and customer delivery.

iCargo supports SIA in its cargo business processes. The ICMS provides a single integrated cargo application for business users in Singapore and overseas, as well as a seamless interface with partners including general sales agents, ground handling agents, and freight forwarders, simplifying the end-to-end operations. Enhanced data quality and insights also allow SIA to make real-time, data-driven decisions across its sales, operations, and finance processes, while ensuring compliance with international regulations.

Since the ICMS went live on 1 August 2022, approximately 1,500 users across sales, operations, and finance industries have benefited from the system, with iCargo enabling more than 24,000 flights, creating 202,000 bookings and 192,000 airway bills, as well as processing and responding to 8.5 million incoming messages.

IBS Software’s Consulting and Digital Transformation (CDx) business provided user acceptance testing (UAT) support to SIA. The UAT focused on business process transformation and change management efficiency, with inputs from more than 100 end users across the world, and end-to-end testing involving more than 20 upstream and downstream messaging systems.
