Eindhoven Airport takes a step towards enhancing Instrument Landing System (ILS)

Eindhoven Air Base The Ministry of Defence and Eindhoven Airport has reached an agreement in principle on upgrading the ILS system

Eindhoven Airport uses the runway at Eindhoven Military Airport. The new ILS, category III, makes it possible for aircraft to land and take off from Eindhoven Airport in dense fog. Because of the new ILS, air traffic will experience significantly less disturbance due to fog.

The Ministry of Defence will include the higher category ILS in the tender for major maintenance of the runway planned for 2025. The reason for this is that the runway must be broken open just as in the case of major maintenance. In the case of a category III ILS, extra lighting is installed in the runway, which means that air traffic cannot use it. By combining the installation of the new ILS with major maintenance, the runway only needs to be broken up once. A final decision on the higher category of ILS will be taken on the basis of the tenders received in due course, following the invitation to tender.

The ILS is a radio navigation system that pilots use for landing. Using the ILS, a precision approach to the runway can be performed. With a Category III, there is also lighting in the runway. The ILS has three categories (with category IIIB being the most comprehensive). At airports with this ILS category, landings can be made without having a view of the runway. Eindhoven Airport currently has an ILS category I. At Eindhoven Airport, pilots need at least 550 metres visibility of the runway in order to be allowed to land.

Eindhoven Airport achieves highest level Airport Carbon Accreditation

Eindhoven Airport has been certified to level 4+ 'Transformation': the new highest achievable level of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme of ACI Europe (Airports Council International). This new quality mark confirms that Eindhoven Airport is taking concrete steps to reduce its CO2 emissions and that it has set out the relevant goals in its Sustainability Roadmap. In addition, Eindhoven Airport is working together with partners and users of the airport to achieve its zero-emission goals. Until zero-emission is achieved, the airport is compensating its residual emissions through a local climate project run by Smits Group in Wanroij.

ACI Europe examines, checks and recognizes the actions of participating airports in the area of CO2 reduction.

Eindhoven Airport expects busy May holidays

Eindhoven Airport expects busy May holidays

Eindhoven Airport expects vacation traffic during the May vacation period that officially starts on April 30. In the (run-up to) the summer, too, Eindhoven Airport expects it to be busy at the airport, especially at peak times. To prepare travellers as well as possible for their flight, Eindhoven Airport has launched the webpage Eindhoven Airport: Ready for take-off | Eindhoven Airport with tips and information on how to travel during busy times. The airport asks travellers for patience and understanding. Travellers should prepare for longer than usual waiting times due to the increasing number of travellers and staff shortages at the airport. The reason for the lack of capacity is that the airport, like several other companies, is suffering from a tight labour market.

During and around the May vacation period, around 100,000 passengers a week travel to or from Eindhoven Airport (arrivals and departures added together). After the corona period, passenger numbers are still slightly lower than in 2019 (the last pre-corona year) but at peak times it can be just as busy as in 2019. Eindhoven Airport and its partners are doing everything possible to avoid extra waiting time as much as possible. In addition, travellers are asked to prepare their air travel well.

A number of important tips for travellers in a row:

Eindhoven Airport expands terminal

Eindhoven Airport is going to expand its terminal. The current terminal is currently too small because it was built for 5 million passengers per year. Eindhoven Airport expects to return to around 7 million passengers (the level before the coronapandemic). The expansion will increase the comfort for travellers and employees by creating more space for handling the airport processes and services.

The current terminal is approximately 26,000 square meters. The expansion will add a total of 10,000 square meters to the terminal (8000 square meters on airside and 2000 square meters on landside). The reclaim hall will be enlarged and there will be more space for (additional) gates. The Non-Schengen area will also be expanded. Furthermore, more space will be created for catering. The extension will be on the first floor and the second floor. The extension will be built at the current terminal on the forecourt, directly opposite the main entrance to car park P1. The party responsible for the construction will be announced in October.

Today EGM architecten, Iv-Bouw and Eindhoven Airport will sign the contract for the design work for the expansion of the terminal. The architect will make a preliminary and a final design. In addition, the architect will be responsible for the management and supervision during construction. Iv-Bouw will provide the structural and installation design. The preliminary design will be ready by the end of July. The final design is expected in January 2023. Construction will start at the end of 2023. The extension will be completed in the second half of 2025. Parts of it will already be put into use in phases.

Eindhoven Airport is convinced that the expansion of the terminal will contribute to the quality, comfort and image that Eindhoven Airport wants to offer.

Royal Air Maroc started operations at Eindhoven Airport

This week Eindhoven Airport welcomed a new airline; Royal Air Maroc will fly twice a week between Eindhoven and Nador in Morocco this summer. Eindhoven Airport is thus welcoming another national airline.

With its Nador destination, Royal Air Maroc focuses mainly on travellers visiting family and friends. This also applies to Air Arabia, which announced earlier this year that it would start flying between Eindhoven and Nador.  Royal Air Maroc flights to Nador will be carried out on Thursdays and Saturdays with an Airbus A321 featuring 220 seats.

Visiting family and friends in Morocco was not possible for a long time because the borders were closed due to the corona pandemic. Morocco reopened the borders to travellers from abroad on June 15 this year. As a result, it is again possible to visit relatives in Morocco this coming summer vacation.

The Turkish community can also spend this summer with family and friends who came to Turkey by plane. The Turkish airline SunExpress offers flights between Eindhoven and the city of Izmir since the end of June. The flights are carried out on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Corendon flies on Tuesdays between Eindhoven and the Turkish city of Kayseri. The metropolis Istanbul can also be reached from Eindhoven. Pegasus flies to Istanbul's Sabiha Gökcen airport on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. In addition to business passengers, Pegasus is aiming for tourist visitors and travellers visiting family or friends with its connection to the metropolis.

Air Arabia soon to operate Eindhoven Airport - Nador, Morocco service twice a week

As of May 3, a new airline will be active at Eindhoven Airport. From that day on Air Arabia will fly twice a week to Nador in Morocco.* The flights will be carried out on Mondays and Fridays with an A320 (174 seats). Nador is not a new destination from Eindhoven. TUI already served this destination in North Africa. It is expected that Air Arabia will serve the VFR-market (visiting family and friends) where TUI mainly focused on the leisure traveller. If Air Arabia can obtain more slots for the summer season 2021 then VFR destinations like Oujda and Fez in Morocco will be looked at. But the country's largest city, Casablanca, is also a possibility.

Currently, Air Arabia has a total of 121 NEO aircraft on order, ranging from the Airbus A320NEO, the A321NEO to the A321NEO XLR. The gradual switch to these aircraft fits perfectly with our ambition to become more sustainable and to reduce noise pollution as much as possible.

Air Arabia is an airline based in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. The airline flies to destinations in the Middle East, North Africa and the Indian subcontinent.

*Depending on then-current travel advisories and restrictions.

CST wants the European Commission to announce the blending obligation next year and that it will enter into force no later than 2025. Until 2050 CST wants the mandatory blending ratio to increase.

Eindhoven Airport to keep flight movements at a maximum of 41,500 in 2022

In consultation with the State Secretary of Defence (Visser), the Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management (Van Nieuwenhuizen) has set the maximum number of flight movements at Eindhoven Airport at 41,500 again for 2022. Calculations are still under way to establish the new noise contour for 2022. It has already been decided that the maximum noise levels permitted at Eindhoven Airport in 2022 will be lower than in previous years. The Minister also states that she will soon be in a position to provide clarity about an ambitious but realistic scenario for the future development of Eindhoven Airport between 2020 and 2030. In the same letter, the Minister also turns her attention to the recently created Luchthaven Eindhoven Overleg (Eindhoven Airport consultation structure), a new permanent consultation structure chaired by Mr. Van Geel. Eindhoven Airport maps out expected runway and flight path use

‘BurenApp provides advance insight into the number of civil aircraft and flight routes'

How many aircraft (civil air traffic) are flying in the region this evening, and what runway direction and flight path are they taking? The BurenApp [Neighbours App] of Eindhoven Airport will be able to answer all these questions from 1 December. Eindhoven Airport is the first airport to launch a tool that literally maps the runway direction and flight path forecasts for the local community. With this new tool in the BurenApp, residents can check daily to see what the civil air traffic will be like around their neighbourhood. The app looks ahead by the hour to see how many civil aircraft are flying in the Eindhoven Airport area and from which direction they are taking off or landing. At the beginning of next year, the tool will even look 24 hours ahead, allowing residents to already see next morning's air traffic the previous evening. Eindhoven Airport developed the tool in collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) and air traffic control at Eindhoven Air Base. Official meteorological data from the KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute) is used.
