The world’s first second-hand concept store located at an airport to open at Helsinki Airport

Finavia and the Finnish family firm Relove are bringing a unique second-hand concept store to Helsinki Airport. The concept combines recycling culture with a popular café.

“We are constantly developing the airport’s selection, following trends and the wishes of passengers. We have now signed an agreement with the Finnish company Relove that will introduce a second-hand concept store to Helsinki Airport. It’s one of this year’s most anticipated new services,” says Nora Immonen, Finavia’s VP and Director of the Commercial Services Business Unit at Helsinki Airport.

This is the world’s first second-hand concept store at an airport. The concept store combines high-quality second-hand clothing and accessories with a café that has become very popular.

“We are delighted with this unique and historic collaboration with Finavia. It gives us an opportunity to promote the circular economy with a larger target group. At the airport, we will also reach international customers. We will bring an enjoyable oasis to Helsinki Airport, where second-hand shop and café services are intertwined in a fantastic way that has never been seen before in an airport environment,” say Relove’s entrepreneur couple Noora Hautakangas and Eero Ukkonen.

Helsinki Airport awarded as Europe's best airport in its size category

Airport company Finavia has been awarded a prestigious international airport award. The award is based on a survey in which passengers have rated Helsinki Airport as the best airport in Europe in the 15 to 25 million passengers size category.

“We are delighted to have won the award and are proud that air passengers have chosen Helsinki Airport as the best airport in Europe. Year after year, Helsinki Airport continues to be ranked among the best airports in the world,” says Finavia’s CEO Kimmo Mäki.

The ASQ (Airport Service Quality) award was granted by Airports Council International (ACI), the international umbrella organisation for airports. They awarded the prizes to airports that were the best in their size and region class.

The award is based on a continuous measurement of customer satisfaction and service quality. The ASQ survey involves almost 400 airports from 95 countries each year. Approximately 4,000 air passengers are interviewed at Helsinki Airport every year for the survey.

In the ASQ survey, air passengers evaluate 30 different service categories, including guidance, customer service, check-in, shopping and dining.

For the past years, Finavia has been renewing Helsinki Airport's service and restaurant selection as part of the airport's extensive development programme. The departures hall, arrivals hall and security control have also been updated.

Two airports in Finland celebrate anniversaries this year.......

This year, Finavia celebrates the major anniversaries of two of its airports. Ivalo and Oulu airports will celebrate their 80th and 70th anniversaries, respectively.

“The airports of Oulu and Ivalo have served passengers and airlines for decades and have developed into important hubs for tourism and business. Both airports ensure good connections and accessibility for the area,” says Jonna Pietilä, Finavia’s VP Northern Finland airports.

Over the past ten years, Finavia has made significant investments in the development of both Ivalo and Oulu airports. The company has invested tens of millions of euros in improving the infrastructure and services at its airports.

Ivalo Airport – the northernmost airport in Finland

“Ivalo Airport is the northernmost airport in Finavia’s airport network and in all of Finland. The Christmas season is the busiest time of the year at our airport, as tourists from all over the world come to admire the magic of Lapland,” says Jarmo Pyhäjärvi, Finavia’s Airport Manager of Ivalo Airport.

Pyhäjärvi says that the 80th anniversary is an important milestone for the airport. Ivalo Airport was originally completed in 1943 but was destroyed in the Lapland War in 1945. After the war, the airport was rebuilt. The gold rush in Lapland in particular gave an impetus to the rebuilding of the airport.

“Over the years, we have extended Ivalo Airport several times to serve the growing number of passengers. In 2016, 1,000 square metres of extra space was added to the terminal, and in 2018, the apron was extended, which doubled the number of aircraft stands, among other things. The latest extension took place in 2019, when the arrivals hall was completed.”
