SAS and the Norwegian armed forces signs new agreement for strategic evacuation

An Airbus A320neo jet will be used for evacuation needs
The Norwegian Armed Forces have on March 4 signed a new agreement with SAS for strategic air evacuation. The agreement ensures continued capacity for strategic air evacuation using SAS’ latest Airbus A320neo aircraft. This will follow the phase-out of the current aircraft and transition to the new agreement will take place in 2025.

The agreement between Norwegian Armed Forces and SAS consists of two parts: a cooperation agreement to design a A320neo based solution and an agreement covering operational assignments.

“We are honoured that the Norwegian Armed Forces have selected SAS for future evacuation missions, building on several years of joint assignments across the world. While the currently used aircraft has served us well, it is now time for the next-generation, lower-emission A320neo to continue these proud assignments together with our highly skilled and dedicated staff. Contributing to the safe transport of citizens across the world when crisis strikes is a responsibility we do not take lightly, and we are grateful for the trust placed in us by the Norwegian Defense through this work,” says Paul Verhagen, Chief Commercial Officer at SAS.

The A320neo is a regular passenger plane and – once the new design is finalized – can be converted into a flying hospital, with medical equipment and hospital beds. SAS’ Airbus A320neo has around 18% lower CO2 emissions compared to the aircraft it replaces. Additionally, there is 30% less noise in these aircraft, creating a more favourable environment for evacuees and crew on board.

SAS has a 25-year history of taking part in evacuation assignments, with missions such as the tsunami in Thailand, and evacuation missions from Afghanistan, Moira refugee camp and Ukrainian patients.

Transavia France takes delivery of its first A320neo

French low-cost carrier Transavia France, part of the Air France-KLM Group, has taken delivery of its first A320neo, on lease from Avolon, from Airbus manufacturing site in Toulouse. The airline has opted for the Airbus option to have the delivery flight to Paris-Orly powered by a sustainable aviation fuel blend on board.

The new aircraft features 186 seats in a single-class layout. Selected for its outstanding operational efficiency, reduced emissions and comfort, the A320neo will be deployed by Transavia France on its services on its domestic network as well as across its European and Mediterranean markets.

The introduction of its first A320neo aircraft marks the beginning of Transavia France' transition to become an all Airbus operator, powered by efficient A320neo Family aircraft. With its reduced fuel burn and emissions, the A320neo will play a key role in advancing the airline Group's sustainable development goals.

By incorporating new generation CFM International LEAP-1A engines and Sharklets, the A320neo brings a 50% noise footprint reduction and 20% fuel savings and CO2 reduction compared to previous generation single-aisle aircraft, while improving passenger comfort in a wider single-aisle cabin.

The cabin features Airbus’ Airspace XL bins. The larger bins provide 40% more stowage space compared to conventional bins, for a more relaxed boarding. In addition, USB-C ports are available for passengers at each seat, and the latest lighting system enhances the overall passenger experience.

The A320neo Family is the world’s most popular single aisle having won nearly 9,800 orders from nearly 140 customers in all markets.

50 Airbus A320neos on order converted to larger A321neo model by Avolon

Avolon, a leading global aviation finance company, has signed a binding agreement for its order of 20 new A330neo aircraft from Airbus. The order firms up a memorandum of understanding signed at the Paris Airshow in June. The new aircraft are scheduled to be delivered between 2025 and 2028.

Avolon was a launch customer for the A330neo programme in 2014 and is enjoying strong customer demand for additional widebody aircraft having fully placed its current order book. The order builds on our strong relationship with Airbus as a launch customer for the A330neo, and our position as the leading lessor for this aircraft type.”

Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International at Airbus commented:   “It’s fantastic to see Avolon once again commit additional investment in the A330neo aircraft and lead the lessor market reordering widebody aircraft. Avolon’s vision and timing could not be better with this commitment for a further 20 aircraft to its portfolio. easyJet’s fleet now consists of more new-technology, more fuel efficient “NEO” - aircraft than ever before – as the operator took delivery of its 67th A320neo Family aircraft this month.

As the airline continues its fleet renewal programme, an integral part of its roadmap to net zero, older Airbus A320ceo Family aircraft will be phased out over time and replaced by new-technology aircraft, which are at least 15% more fuel efficient and see up to 50% noise reduction upon taxiing, take-off and landing.

Based on current delivery plans, A320neo Family aircraft will 25% of its overall fleet by October of next year. easyJet has - 19 A320neo Family deliveries expected by the end of 2024 and a further 27 in 2025.

easyJet has taken delivery of its 67th A320neo Family aircraft this month; making over 20% of the easyJet fleet NEO-technology

A320neo Family aircraft use around 15% less fuel than their equivalent predecessors, and have up to 50% noise reduction at take-off, landing and whilst taxiing

easyJet has an orderbook for a further 164 A320neo Family aircraft, in addition to the 67 already delivered

By October 2024, the fleet is expected to pass 25% new-technology aircraft

David Morgan, Chief Operating Officer at easyJet commented:   “The adoption of more efficient technology is the single biggest contributor to reducing emissions in the short term and the roll-out of new neo aircraft is a key part of this.

We are also continuously looking at our operation each and every day to drive efficiencies which has been demonstrated with the addition of Descent Profile Optimisation (DPO) and Continuous Descent Approach (CDA) – a state of software from Airbus that is being retrofitted on all our aircraft. The two technologies will respectively enable fuel-saving enhancement to the aircraft’s on-board Flight Management System (FMS) and reduce noise impact on the ground.”

Wouter Van Wersch, Airbus President Europe Region & Sales, added:  “As we continue to fulfil easyJet's orders, each A320neo delivery future-proofs the airline's growth as traffic rebounds. Airbus is delighted that the A320neo family aircraft, together with our strong service offering, is laying the foundation of easyJet's decarbonisation journey which is already well underway.”

easyJet is the world’s largest operator of Airbus’ single-aisle aircraft with over 300 planes currently in service, including the A319, A320ceo, A320neo and A321neo. The airline serves over 130 European airports in some 31 countries operating over 1,000 routes.

Signs up for 20 Airbus A330neo aircraft.

At the Paris Air Show on Wednesday, the international aircraft leasing giant Avolon has ordered 60 aircraft and converted a previous order to a larger type of plane.

The firm has placed a firm order with Boeing for 40  737 MAX aeroplanes, the first order from the company since 2017. However, this isn't a completely new order, it was previously listed as unidentified on the Boeing Orders & Deliveries website with the announcement deliberately delayed to the air show to boost Boeing's publicity coverage at the show.

Andy Cronin, CEO of Avolon said: "Today's announcement reaffirms our long-standing partnership with Boeing and our support for their 737 MAX program. We are confident in the long-term demand from our customers for the 737 MAX, and this order extends our delivery pipeline out to 2030,"

Avolon has a long-standing relationship with the 737 MAX program and took delivery of the 1,000th 737 MAX last year. We look forward to building on this strong relationship with a key leasing partner as they grow their Boeing portfolio of aeroplanes."

Avolon has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus at the Paris Air Show to order 20 Airbus A330neo aircraft. These new aircraft are scheduled to be delivered between 2026 and 2028.

Avolon was a launch customer for the A330neo programme in 2014 and has fully placed its current widebody order book.  This agreement will also see 50 A320neo aircraft Avolon has on order with Airbus converted to the larger A321neo model as passenger demand has recently rapidily

Andy Cronin commented:  “We have been a strong supporter of the A330neo programme since its launch and, with our existing widebody orderbook fully placed, we are now locking in future growth in a supply-constrained environment. Our expanded delivery pipeline allows us to offer our customers the A330neo’s range and reduced emissions, supporting their evolving fleet needs. Our recent aircraft orders and commitments reflect our confidence in the long-term growth trajectory of the aviation sector, which is outlined in our recent World Fleet Forecast projecting that the global passenger fleet will almost double by 2042.”

Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International at Airbus said: "It’s fantastic to see Avolon once again commit additional investment in the A330neo aircraft and lead the lessor market reordering widebody aircraft. Avolon’s vision and timing could not be better with this commitment for a further 20 aircraft to its portfolio. Avolon will benefit from the strong wave of growth and replacements that we currently observe across all markets."
