Aviation Leaders Assemble in Doha for IATA’s 78th AGM

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), announced that leaders of the global aviation industry are gathering in Doha, Qatar, for the 78th IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit (WATS), with Qatar Airways as the host airline.

The event (19-21 June) attracts the industry’s most senior leaders from among IATA’s 290 member airlines, as well as leading government officials, strategic partners, equipment suppliers, and media.

“In a few days, Doha will become the aviation capital of the world. The last time we met in Doha, in 2014, we were celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first airline flight. This year’s AGM is another momentous occasion: Airlines are simultaneously recovering from the COVID-19 crisis, setting the path to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, working to improve gender diversity, and adapting to a geopolitical environment that is undergoing its greatest shock in over three decades,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “It is an absolute privilege to be hosting our industry partners in Qatar Airways’ home city, particularly during our milestone 25th year of operations. Coming together face-to-face provides us with the opportunity to discuss lessons learnt from our recent years during the pandemic, global issues affecting us all in the here and now, and to plan the best way forward for the industry.”

Destination Doha - a city of contrasts, a feast for all tastes.

Doha is evolving, and fast. Its growth rate rivals those of most of the world’s cities, but it still has a wealth of culture on display for you to enjoy. Much of this is contained in the many museums scattered across the city. The Museum of Islamic Art is not only a journey through 1,400 years of Islamic culture from three continents, but is also an iconic city landmark.
The equally fascinating Sheikh Faisal Museum is a private collection of more than 3,000 pieces, including ancient Islamic manuscripts, textiles and antiquities.

If you walk along the Corniche in Al Rumeilia Park, you will find Doha Heritage Village. A showcase for traditional Qatari life, it offers you the chance to see demonstrations of activities such as pearl trading and weaving. The village often puts on festivals and events to show visitors the richness of Qatari culture.

The Katara Cultural Village also captures the essence of Qatar, bringing to life the past, present and future of this thriving nation in an enticing blend of restaurants, art galleries and cultural displays.

To discover life beyond the city’s boundaries, try a desert safari, which can include an overnight camping experience in the desert and excursions to historical sites.

Any trip to Doha should include a visit to the Museum of Islamic Art Park. Situated next to the museum itself, this beautifully manicured green-space offers fun for all ages. Paddleboats and bicycles are available for hire, and the park frequently serves as a venue for all kinds of events.

Doha is an up-and-coming sports venue, and there are several stadiums dotted throughout its limits. Football is incredibly popular here, and fans are feverishly awaiting the winter of 2022 when Doha will host the FIFA World Cup.

Golf lovers will want to make sure they are in town for the Qatar Masters and Qatar Open, held every year. The F1 World Powerboat Championship is also a key sporting event, and Doha’s seafront offers several vantage points from which to follow the action.

Doha is full of exclusive malls, shopping centres and boutiques. Look out for shops selling exclusive perfumes, jewellery and branded clothing.

For a more authentic taste of the Arabian shopping experience, head to the souqs or bazaars. The Souq Waqif is a great place to pick up a memento of your rip to Doha, and you will even see falcons and birds for sale here.

Doha has attracted some of the world’s finest chefs, and the quality of food in town is exceptional. The cuisine is of an international flavour, from Turkish and Indian, to the Western dishes that are particularly popular in the more exclusive five-star hotel restaurants.

However, Qatari cuisine is worth exploring when you travel to Doha. Seafood is one of its key components, and some of the best is served at restaurants close to the harbour.
