19 E175 jets for SkyWest Airlines

SkyWest orders 19 Embraer jets

Brazilian planemaker Embraer said last week its firm order backlog reached $17.8 billion at the end of the third quarter, including a newly announced order by SkyWest for 19 of its E175 jets.  Its backlog grew by $500 million from the previous quarter and Embraer delivered 43 aircraft in the third quarter, compared with 33 in the year-ago period, totalling 105 aircraft delivered year-to-date.

The planemaker confirmed that SkyWest had ordered 19 of its E175 jets for $1.1 billion, with deliveries expected to start in the final quarter of 2024. The new aircraft will be flown by United Airlines under a capacity purchase agreement, Embraer said.

In the third quarter of the year, SkyWest has reported a net income of $23 million, compared to net income of $48 million for the same period in 2022.  Revenue was $766 million in Q3 2023, down $23 million, or 3%, from $789 million in Q3 2022.

SkyWest deferred recognizing $57 million of revenue during Q3 2023 compared to recognizing previously deferred revenue of $13 million during Q3 2022. The amount of revenue deferred during Q3 2023 was driven by modified terms relating to fixed monthly cash payments under SkyWest’s previously announced amended flying contracts.

Commenting on the results, Chip Childs, Chief Executive Officer of SkyWest, said, “Our teams continue to deliver an exceptional product and operating performance. We are pleased with the improving trajectory of our business, strong demand for our product, and steady progress toward stabilization of our pilot hiring and retention. I want to thank our amazing team for delivering outstanding operations in the third quarter.”

Operating expenses were $717 million in Q3 2023, up $3 million from $714 million in Q3 2022, driven by increases in employee compensation, including higher pilot pay scales. Higher labor
costs were partially offset by lower aircraft rent expenses due to the early lease buyouts on 35 CRJ aircraft for the nine months ended September 30, 2023, and lower operating costs associated with a 10% reduction in Q3 2023 block hour production compared to Q3 2022.

Czech Republic selects the Embraer C-390 Millennium as its next medium military transport aircraft.......

The Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces of the Czech Republic announced this week the start of negotiations on the potential acquisition of the new-generation multi-mission Embraer C-390 Millennium, a military transport aircraft. The decision to start negotiating towards the possible purchase the C-390 was based on a market assessment and analysis prepared by the Czech Republic's Ministry of Defense, which identified the C-390 as the most suitable solution for meeting the requirements of the Army of the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic intends to acquire two aircraft that will significantly increase its airlift capacity, allowing the Czech Army to perform missions such as air transport, air assault operations, aerial resupply, medical evacuation, humanitarian aid, air-to-air refuelling and firefighting with these aircraft. Furthermore, the C-390 Millennium requires significantly less maintenance than other aircraft, which translates into higher availability and lower life-cycle costs.

"We are honoured to be selected by the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces to start negotiating on this significant acquisition and we are ready to provide the most advanced medium transport aircraft available in the market to the Czech Republic," said Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO, Embraer Defense & Security. "The C-390 Millennium is drawing the attention of several nations around the world due to its unbeatable combination of high productivity and operating flexibility with low operating costs."

Porter Airlines and Avolon agree sale and leaseback deal for 10 Embraer E195-E2 jets

The total list price of US$841 million

The first delivery is scheduled for Q4 2023

Avolon, the international aircraft leasing company, and Canadian regional airline Porter have signed a sale and leaseback deal for 10 new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft. The new aircraft will support Porter’s expansion of routes within Canada and further into the North American market. The deal has a value of US$841 million based on current list prices but in reality, is considerably lower.

The transaction represents Avolon’s fifth leasing customer in Canada and will increase Avolon’s portfolio exposure in North America. Four of the aircraft are scheduled for delivery in 2023, with the balance to be delivered in 2024.

Porter introduced the E195-E2 to commercial service in February 2023 and plans to expand its fleet in coming years, with 50 firm orders and the option to purchase 50 additional aircraft. Porter’s E2 configuration offers passengers a comfortable 132-seat, all-economy, two-by-two set up, with no middle seats. Initial routes for Porter’s E2 fleet are focused within Canada, but the airline has ambitions to expand quickly to the south, soon offering service for its customers to key markets in the US, as well as Mexico and the Caribbean.

The E195-E2 has been designed to maximize returns and efficiency in achieving 25% lower carbon emissions and fuel burn compared to the previous generation aircraft. The new aircraft also supports Avolon’s progress towards its fleet target of 75% new technology aircraft by 2025.

Paul Geaney, President and Chief Commercial Officer, Avolon commented: “Porter is renowned for its customer experience and has exciting plans for the expansion of its E2 fleet. We are delighted to welcome them as a customer and look forward to partnering on their future growth. Our decision to add the E2 to our portfolio is supported by its growing operator base, with the transaction further diversifying our portfolio, whilst offering attractive returns.  The E2 is a modern fuel-efficient aircraft that offers excellent operating performance, competing effectively with other smaller narrowbody platforms.”

Jeffrey Brown, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Porter Airlines, commented: “The E2 is an incredible addition to Porter’s fleet, offering best-in-class seat cost economics and providing an ideal platform to deliver the truly differentiated in-flight economy passenger experience that Porter is known for. This means treating everyone with care and offering complimentary amenities like WiFi, and beer and wine served in glassware throughout the cabin. We are excited to partner with Avolon and value their reputation and expertise in aircraft leasing, which makes them an ideal new partner.”

Martyn Holmes, Chief Commercial Officer, Embraer Commercial Aviation, commented: “Embraer is excited to welcome Avolon to the E2 program, another sign that the momentum the E2 is enjoying in the market is set to continue. Adding a lessor of Avolon’s stature to the E2 program is a further endorsement for this great family of aircraft, and the value it delivers to operators and owners alike.”

Gripen E fighter jet production line inaugurated in Brazil by Saab and Embraer

Saab and Embraer have this week inaugurated the production line for Gripen E fighter jet in Brazil, at Embraer´s plant in Gavião Peixoto, São Paulo State.

The event was attended by high-ranking civil and military authorities, as well as representatives from various sectors of Brazilian society. The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, participated in the ceremony, together with the Minister of Defense, José Mucio Monteiro Filho and the Brazilian Air Force Commander, Air Force General Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno, among other important guests.

The inauguration of the final assembly line, which is the only one for Gripen E outside of Sweden, marks the delivery of one of the most significant contributions to the Gripen fighter ecosystem in Brazil. The Embraer plant in Gavião Peixoto with the Gripen Design and Development Network (GDDN), the Gripen Flight Test Center (GFTC), and now the assembly line, is home to the development, production and testing stages of the aircraft.

Since the signing of the contract to supply 36 Gripen fighters – 28 Gripen E (single seater) and 8 Gripen F (twin-seater) - to the Brazilian Air Force in 2014, Saab and Embraer have been working together on the largest ongoing technology transfer project in the country. Recently, with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the companies, the production line has also become an opportunity for new business.

"The start of operations of the Gripen production line marks our commitment to transfer technology and knowledge to Brazilian industry. Here, we will produce 15 of the 36 aircraft currently contracted to the Brazilian Air Force. The aim is also to produce here any future Gripen orders from Brazil as well as other countries. We want Brazil to become an export hub to Latin America and potentially other regions”, said Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab.

“This is another step forward in our growth plans, as pilots will soon have the opportunity to begin their training ahead of our first E195-E2 flights later this year,” said Paul Moreira, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Porter Airlines. “FlightSafety has been Porter’s pilot training partner since 2006, so we are pleased that they have completed constructing this simulator on time and to be able to continue this partnership as we grow.”

The simulator is located at FlightSafety International’s Toronto Learning Centre, where over 650 Porter pilots will receive training for both the E195-E2 and Dash 8-400. Pilots are able to experience all aspects of real-world flying, including full motion simulation and actual airport environments, in a controlled setting. Porter Airlines finalized an eight-year agreement with FlightSafety International last year to continue as the airline’s exclusive pilot training partner.

“We are thrilled to continue our long-standing partnership with Porter Airlines to train best-in-class aviators,” said Brad Thress, president and CEO of FlightSafety International. “Since 2006, FlightSafety has been providing innovative and cost-effective training solutions to Porter crews. This proven track record is evidenced by the confidence that Porter has placed in us to deliver E2 solutions for another eight years.”

Widerøe takes the next step towards emission free, commercially viable aviation with Embraer

Widerøe, committed to be one of the first airlines in the world to be emission-free, has signed an MoU with Embraer that will see the companies working together to define and establish the real-world requirements for sustainable, emission free, and commercially viable, aviation.

The companies will collaborate to define requirements such as infrastructure, ground handling, aircraft performance (range, speed, etc.), and cargo space etc. The Energia AdvisoryGroup will help accelerate time to market and ultimately inform the choice of which Energia concept will come to market first.

This agreement builds on existing Embraer projects with Widerøe such as ‘Project Zero’ – a collaboration with Rolls-Royce to study a truly zero emission aircraft (zero NOx and other greenhouse gases) of around 50 seats. This complementary work looks at all aspects of developing and operating the 19-50 seat Energia concepts.

“At Widerøe, we established Widerøe Zero because we need the freedom to think afresh. There are entrenched ways of doing things in our industry, but running a zero-emissions fleet is going to be completely different,” says Andreas Kollbye Aks, former Director of Strategy atWiderøe, and CEO of Widerøe Zero. “Embraer’s approach to sustainable aviation most closely aligns with our own, and this collaboration will get into the real-world detail, to shape the technology that will make Zero missions flight a reality.”

The largest aircraft to land at London City Airport - Welcome to Embraer E195-E2

London City Airport welcomed a visit from Embraer's largest passenger jet the E195-E2.

An impressive debut at London City Airport occurred this week when London's favourite airport welcomed an Embraer E195-E2 jet fresh from display at The Farnborough Airshow.

This, the latest in Embraer's commercial passenger jets was able to cope with the steep approach needed to operate from the docklands airport, with ease. The visit was in anticipation of the aircraft’s certification to fly in and out of the airport that requires a descent angle of around 5.5 degrees, which is expected by the end of the year. The visit was also to conduct ground handling and other operational tests and other preparations ahead of the expected scheduled deployment once certification is granted.

The aircraft, the largest in the E2 family, seating up to 146 passengers, was flown into LCY on a 39% blend of Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Embraer’s test aircraft, featuring the eye-catching black and gold TechLion livery, was welcomed with the traditional water salute from London City Airport’s fire service.

The visit demonstrates the importance Embraer places on being able to offer LCY capability to airlines with the E195-E2 - the E190-E2 began operations into LCY with in September 2021. The airport is a vital component of London’s wider connectivity, and Embraer aircraft are uniquely able to manage the challenges of LCY operations; Embraer aircraft account for 85% of all LCY operations on routes as diverse as Edinburgh and Mykonos.

Alison FitzGerald, Chief Operation Officer at London City Airport, said, “The arrival of the E195-E2 signals that we are on the cusp of welcoming more new generation aircraft that provide world-class environmental performance, carry more passengers, and have the potential to connect this airport with more global markets.

This moment also represents the strength of the partnership we have with Embraer, and together, we are pushing the envelope of what’s possible at this airport, as at 146 seats and a wingspan of 35 metres, it will be comfortably the largest aircraft to operate from LCY.

While the immediate focus is certification, we are hopeful that we will see the first E195-E2 in operation next year with KLM which will be real cause of celebration.”

Arjan Meijer, President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation, said, “London City feels like home for Embraer. It’s a great airport, not just because it’s fast and efficient for passengers to travel through, but because its unique challenges as an airfield demonstrate the excellent performance of our E-Jets. We are immensely proud to be the dominant aircraft brand at LCY, and look forward to seeing scheduled services begin with the E195-E2.”

The E2 is the most efficient single-aisle aircraft flying today, saving up to 25% carbon dioxide emissions compared to previous generation aircraft. Over 30% lower CO2 emission per seat versus jets of current generation operating at the airport

In early July, Embraer and Pratt & Whitney successfully tested a E195-E2 aircraft on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). With 100% SAF, the 25% reduction in emissions can be increased up to an impressive 85%.

In terms of noise reduction, the E195-E2 offers an over 65% reduction in noise footprint area compared to jets of current generation operating at the airport.

LCY’s runway length measures just 1,508 metres and descent angles are up to 5.5 degrees. Currently, 85% of all flights landing or departing LCY are E-Jets or the E190-E2 operated by carriers such as BA Cityflyer, KLM Cityhopper, and Helvetic Airways.
