For more than a decade TD has offered TD Aeroplan co-brand credit cards helping Canadians earn Aeroplan points and get to their travel goals faster

The Toronto-Dominion Bank is celebrating a 10-year milestone as the primary credit card issuer for Aeroplan, Canada's Top Airline Loyalty Program. The first TD Aeroplan credit cards were issued in January 2014, and have provided more than 1 million Canadians with accelerated Aeroplan point-earning potential, Air Canada travel benefits and flexible redemption options ever since:1

TD Aeroplan credit cardholders have travelled to over 1,800 destinations worldwide with Air Canada and 45+ partners2
Aeroplan members earned over 300 billion Aeroplan points on TD Aeroplan credit cards1
TD Aeroplan credit cardholders have redeemed more than 6 million rewards2. They're redeeming not just on flight rewards for big destinations, but also for short-haul flights for as few as 6,000 points3, car rentals, hotels, everyday purchases like Starbucks rewards and more

“We’re thrilled to have achieved this significant milestone with Air Canada. Canadians have come to rely on TD Aeroplan credit cards as one of the fastest ways to earn rewards, and enjoy benefits to help them travel better,” said Meg McKee, Senior Vice President, Canadian Card Payments, Loyalty & Personal Lending, “Whether it’s the ever popular free first checked bag, Maple Leaf Lounge TM access or Priority Airport Services that come with select cards, TD Aeroplan cardholders are enjoying a travel loyalty program experience that only teaming up with Canada’s flag carrier can bring.”

Reflecting on this 10-year milestone, some emerging travel trends that are expected to continue into 2024 include2:

Going Further, Staying Longer: Travellers are checking more off their bucket list with long stays at more far-off destinations like Thailand, Australia and Singapore. They’re investing more, but also using features, like Aeroplan’s a 4th Night Free, to make extended stays more affordable.
Chasing Stars: Moments in pop culture are influencing destination choices. Whether they’re jet setting off to an arena concert or visiting the shoot location of their favourite hotel-based drama series, show business inspiration is bringing travellers to a wider range of destinations.

Finnair to move its loyalty programme to Avios in 2024.

The former legacy airline of Finland,  the Helsinki-based Finnair is joining forces with IAG Loyalty to fully renew and update its Finnair Plus loyalty programme by introducing Avios as its new loyalty currency in early 2024.

Partnering with IAG Loyalty to adopt Avios will bring new opportunities for existing and new Finnair Plus members to collect and use the programme’s new loyalty currency.  The airline has also announced that its programme will also move to a new spend-based platform as it seeks to outsource almost all functions of administration.

The partnership is the next step in the expansion of the Avios currency worldwide, ensuring the 40 million+ members can enjoy Avios on even more routes and on even more rewarding experiences.

It follows last year’s ground-breaking partnership between IAG Loyalty and Qatar Airways that saw the airline join British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Vueling as adopters of Avios.

IAG Loyalty CEO, Adam Daniels, said: “Finnair’s adoption of Avios is recognition of the global significance of our currency, the incredible value and the wide range of benefits it has for members. We are delighted to be able to play a central role in a new era for Finnair’s loyalty programme, as we continue to grow the Avios currency globally and extend our leadership in loyalty.”

Finnair says that as an extra incentive to join Finnair Plus its members will now also receive complimentary internet access for messaging on its short-haul European flights operated on the carrier's Airbus aircraft - regardless of their tier status.

The Finnair Plus programme was launched in 1992 and the airline says has over four million members, although it is unknown how many are active travellers or the exact liability amount of their accounts.

Finnair SVP Customer Engagement, Rogier Van Enk said: “2024 marks the start of an exciting era for our loyalty program, with new benefits and improved options for our members to use Avios - both within Finnair and within IAG Loyalty’s partner network. We look forward to a great and long-lasting partnership for many years to come.”

As part of the changes, Finnair will also increase the number of award seats available on its flights, in many cases, double as the airline will guarantee at least 4 award seats on Finnair flights within Europe and 8 on Finnair long-haul flights.

Finnair Plus award points will be converted to Avios with a 3:2 ratio, and the purchasing power of the current points remains unchanged – Avios prices are also updated with the same 3:2 ratio.

The new loyalty currency, Avios, will be collected, and members will be able to move from one tier to another based on the money spent on Finnair’s flights and travel extras. Tier limits will be revised to reflect the switch to Avios and the new spend-based earn of tier points. Collecting tier points and loyalty currency on partner-marketed or operated flights will continue to be based on the travel class, booking class, and distance flown. The new programme will work on miles rather than kilometres, flown.

Finnair Plus members will be able to earn Avios when they shop online with thousands of leading brands via shopping.ba.com and with IAG Loyalty’s growing list of partners around the world that range from BP, Nectar, and Uber in the UK, Areas airport retail, and Cabify in Spain and Bilt in the US.

IAG Loyalty currently partners with over 125 leading global brands such as American Express, Nectar, Uber and Marriott.

With these and other innovations to come, we are continuing to deliver on our commitment that travel is better when you’re an AAdvantage member.”

Introducing more AAdvantage benefits and Loyalty Point Rewards

In March 2023, American will introduce opportunities to receive benefits and earn rewards more often and give members more options to customize their travel experiences.

For example, members will unlock their first Loyalty Point Reward — formerly known as Loyalty Choice Rewards — after earning only 15,000 Loyalty Points and before reaching AAdvantage Gold® status. These members will receive the benefit of Group 5 boarding for the membership year and the choice between two Loyalty Point Rewards:

Priority check-in, security and Group 4 boarding for one trip.
Five preferred seat coupons.

As members continue to advance toward higher levels of status by earning Loyalty Points, they will receive new benefits such as Loyalty Points bonuses for shopping with some of American’s partners and status with the airline’s preferred car partner.

Unlocking AAdvantage 2023 status and more

As a reminder, Loyalty Points are all that members need to achieve status and reset each program year. AAdvantage members earn miles and Loyalty Points when they fly, use an AAdvantage credit card for purchases or engage with more than 1,000 AAdvantage partners.

Members then redeem those miles to elevate their travels and reach status and rewards through Loyalty Points.

Updating mileage earn and redemption

American is removing the previous 75,000 limit on miles that a member could earn on a single ticket, making flying with American even more rewarding. Members earn miles for flights based on the ticket price and AAdvantage status.

Also, on American and eligible partner flights, AAdvantage members will earn two miles per dollar spent on Basic Economy fares for all tickets issued on or after Jan. 1, 2023, for travel starting March 1, 2023.

Accessing everything American has to offer

AAdvantage® membership is the only way to experience some of the best that American Airlines offers and unlocks access to some of the airline’s best partner experiences. Starting in March 2023, only AAdvantage members will be able to book and redeem miles for American Airlines Vacations™ packages, which brings customers deals on flights, hotels and car rentals. Also starting March 2023, U.S. American Airlines AAdvantage® Mastercard® credit card holders can redeem miles toward Mastercard® Priceless® Experiences* such as private dinners, sporting events, food festivals, theatrical performances and so much more.

All members will continue to enjoy everyday mileage redemption opportunities. In addition to redeeming miles for flights, members can redeem miles to personalize their travel through experiences like Main Cabin Extra Seats, Five Star Service™ experience and more.

American plans to continue to create more opportunities for AAdvantage members to redeem their miles so they can personalize their travel. Members can learn more about the AAdvantage program’s evolution at aa.com/newaadvantage.
