Major changes to England's travel traffic light system

The UK's Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has announced major changes to England's international travel traffic light system to start taking effect from early October.

From 0400 on Monday 4 October, the amber and green lists will be merged into one list, so we'll only have the open gree list and the red list. Anyone who is fully vaccinated will no longer have to take a PCR test before travelling back to England from green listed countries.

Whilst PCR tests will still need to be done two days after arrival, the rules will be relaxed later in October when the authorities will allow the much cheaper, simpler and faster lateral flow tests.

But, it's bad news, if you haven't been had both doses of the vaccination as you'll be required to take a pre-departure test plus you, will need a PCR test on the second and eighth days after arrival in to England.  People will be required to self-isolate for 10 days if returning from a non-red list country.

The government also said that more vaccine apps from other countries would be accepted as long as the vaccine was a UK acceptable one.

Whilst the changes were warmly welcomed by most in the travel industry,  MAG boss Charlie Cornish continued his government bashing stance,  "For many months, the recovery of UK aviation has lagged behind the rest of Europe" he said and continued to moan, "For as long as vaccinated travellers have to pay for tests, the recovery of one of the UK’s major industries will be held back.

The Government must now find a way to give people back the freedom to travel without the barrier of testing."

Grant Shapps said: "Today's changes mean a simpler, more straightforward system. One with less testing and lower costs, allowing more people to travel, see loved ones or conduct business around the world while providing a boost for the travel industry.

Public health has always been at the heart of our international travel policy and with over 44 million people fully vaccinated in the UK, we are now able to introduce a proportionate updated structure that reflects the new landscape."

Health Secretary Sajid Javid commented, "Today we have simplified the travel rules to make them easier to understand and follow, opening up tourism and reducing the costs to go abroad."

easyJet's Johan Lundgren wasn't satisfied with the new rules, "Vaccinated travellers and those from low-risk countries will still have to do an unnecessary test after arriving in the UK, making travel less affordable for all."

The British Airways boss also wasn't pleased with the announcement,  Sean Doyle said he wanted the government to go further and drop all tests for all vaccinated people arriving from anywhere.

Exeter to Belfast flights extended to 2022

British Airways has extended its service from Exeter Airport to Belfast City Airport to March next year, the airline has confirmed.

The flights had been due to finish at the end of October but have been extended to March 25, 2022 and are bookable now.

The announcement is further good news for Exeter Airport which continues to grow its route network following the impact of the pandemic and the closure of regional airline Flybe in 2020.

Exeter Airport has 28 UK and international destinations for 2021/22, which is more than three-quarters of what it had in early 2020.

Already this month the airport has seen flights re-start to Rhodes and Paphos, Cyprus, and year-round flights to Lanzarote, together with flights to Majorca which recommenced in July, all with TUI.

Ryanair meanwhile operates year-round flights from Exeter to Alicante and Malaga, which re-started in June.

The Belfast service will continue to operate up to four days a week with one-way prices from just £39 and a flight time of just over an hour.  Top 5 things to do in Belfast

"I'm honored to have served Southwest throughout the years in several different capacities, and especially to have been President of the best airline in the business," Nealon said. Eclipse Air Charter expands client base as travellers turn to charter flights for peace of mind

Private aircraft charter company Eclipse Air Charter has enjoyed steady growth in 2021, attracting new clients looking for one-way flights to warm-weather destinations, and reliable, on-demand travel in uncertain times.

Particularly in Europe, where recent sudden changes or cancellations in airline services have thrown travel plans into chaos, Eclipse's brand of personalized, on-demand service and internationally recognized ARGUS Rated Charter Broker status presents a reliable and welcome alternative for clients wary of last-minute complications.

According to reports from aviation industry research company WingX, European business jet travel is up 25% in August compared to pre-pandemic August 2019. Surprisingly, even as more governments lift their pandemic-related travel restrictions, this industry trend shows no sign of slowing, suggesting that what travellers want above all else in 2021 is peace of mind. That and a warm locale in which to wait out the ongoing global malaise—Eclipse has seen a marked increase in the number of bookings to summer-climate destinations like Miami and Scottsdale in the U.S., Bahamas and Turks & Caicos in the Caribbean, and Nice and Mykonos in Europe.

Nearly Three Quarters of U.S. Travellers Support the Introduction of International Vaccine Passports, According to OAG Research

Travellers are taking to the skies again, but the immediate future of air travel remains highly turbulent, according to OAG’s survey of 1,800-plus U.S. travellers in July and August. Domestic capacity in the U.S. is up 81% from June – August 2021, compared to the same period last year. The increase is being fuelled by strong consumer demand; 70% of consumers surveyed by OAG have booked flights for the future.

While travellers’ willingness to fly is increasing, the Delta variant, increased COVID transmission rates and vaccination preferences weigh heavily on the near and mid-term outlook. The large majority of consumers surveyed by OAG report being fully vaccinated. However, OAG found that only 15% of non-vaccinated individuals plan to get vaccinated before their next trip.

Many airlines and destinations are considering vaccine mandates to strengthen confidence and fight transmission. Sixty-eight percent of all survey respondents said they are interested in or want domestic vaccine passports, and 70% believe vaccine passports should be required for international travel. Alarmingly, of those that said they were not yet vaccinated, 56% said they still wouldn’t get vaccinated even if the airline, airport, or destination required it to travel.

“Vaccine mandates are a polarizing issue. Many airlines, governments and destinations are actively considering mandating vaccines to fly or enter, and the majority of travellers support the use of vaccine passports,” said Mayur Patel, Head of APAC, OAG. “While this may add fuel to hot fire, the ongoing strength and resilience of the entire travel market is directly linked to higher vaccination levels and lower transmission rates.”

Other takeaways from OAG’s research include:

Continued COVID-19 concerns keep some travellers grounded. Of the 30% of respondents who haven’t booked flights yet, 40% are waiting for vaccination rates and regulations to improve and 30% are waiting for vaccine passports to be required.
The business travel outlook remains cloudy. Only 62% of business travellers said their company is planning air travel in the next 12 months, while 38% said their company either has no plans (20%) or has not specified plans (18%).
Holiday travel expected to bounce back. The 2021 holiday travel season projects to be a lot stronger than 2020. Of the 38% of travellers surveyed by OAG that said they typically fly for the holidays, only 40% of this group did so in 2020. This year, the percentage of that group who do intend to fly more than doubled (85%). Planned capacity for Thanksgiving week tells a similar story, currently with 47% more domestic seats booked than last year.
Booking behaviour remains erratic. Nearly half of travellers surveyed are still booking on short notice (between two weeks to a month in advance), and half are booking between two-six-plus months out. Eighty-eight percent expect ticket prices to rise in the next 12 months.

Saan selected to provide Digital Air Traffic Control Towers for Belgium.......

Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions (SDATS) has been selected for a long-term framework agreement by skeyes, the Air Traffic Control organisation of Belgium, for their Digital Tower programme.

The agreement calls for a phased introduction of Digital Towers for up to six airports and three centres in Belgium. The framework agreement has a fixed part and a conditional part for a total value of just over 48 million Euro, spread over 18 years. Just recently the Las Vegas based budget airline, Allegiant puts its latest sports-themed livery jet into operational service. It is a sleek one-of-a-kind Silver & Black jet designed to capture the spirit and strength of Raider Nation. The low-cost carrier is the Official Airline of the Las Vegas Raiders and the Naming Rights Partner for Allegiant Stadium.

"As die-hard fans know, 'The Autumn Wind is a Raider,'" said Scott DeAngelo, Allegiant's executive vice president and chief marketing officer. "As football season rolls in this fall, we're thrilled to have 'The Autumn Wind' bring this stunning aircraft to Las Vegas for all fans to enjoy. As Las Vegas' hometown airline, we're incredibly proud of our partnership with our hometown team. This distinctive jet brings together signature elements of both our brands, combining them to showcase our shared community pride."

The one-of-a-kind livery was designed to have a strong, powerful presence in Allegiant's fleet – as the Raiders do both on the field and in the Las Vegas community. The design incorporates Allegiant's signature livery elements – flowing ribbon encircling the fuselage, prominent logo and sunburst tail – but washed in the Silver & Black recognized throughout the world as representing the Raiders. The silver metallic paint was carefully matched to the team's distinctive helmets, and the engine cowlings call out Raider Nation, symbolizing the lift an incredible international fan base gives to this legendary franchise.

"We are pleased and excited to expand our partnership with Allegiant through the addition of this Raiders-branded aircraft," said Las Vegas Raiders President Dan Ventrelle. "Raider Nation and beyond is now able to travel to and from the Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World in style."

Over one million passengers travelled with SAS during August

During the summer season, the customer demand has increased, and more than one million passengers flew with SAS in August. This is about the same level as in July, but an increase of almost 52% compared to the same month last year. Capacity was marginally lower than last month, but 65% higher than the same month last year. The total load factor for August ended at 61%, which is in line with July.

“Imposed travel restrictions remain and everybody at SAS are doing everything possible to make travelling easier for the customers. We continue to open new routes when travel restrictions and demand allow. However, there are still major uncertainties regarding the development of the pandemic, affecting the whole airline industry negatively. Flexibility during the ramp up phase to be able to respond quickly to changes in demand remains key,” says Anko van der Werff, President and CEO at SAS.
