Could the fuel that propelled the Space Shuttle in 1981 power aircraft of the future?

What aeronautical engineers can learn from liquid hydrogen use in spacecraft

Photo Airbus /Getty Images

2021 marks the 40th anniversary of the STS-1 Space Shuttle launch. Integrated in the main external tank, liquid hydrogen was successfully used as rocket propellant on a crewed spacecraft for the first time. As the urgency to decarbonise intensifies, the aviation industry is looking to leverage the lessons learned on liquid hydrogen from the space industry to apply them to future zero-emission aircraft.

The day was April 12, 1981. At the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA, the launch control crew was abuzz: in only a few short minutes, the world’s first space-rated orbiter would officially launch and hurtle towards outer space.

This was history in the making.

European planemaker Airbus is taking further steps to enhance its 'green' credentials by operating a flight of a Beluga super-transporter using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from the aerospace company’s Broughton plant in the UK.

The north Wales line station, which uses the Beluga fleet to transport aircraft wings to Toulouse, Hamburg and Bremen, becomes the second Airbus European site to use SAF, after Hamburg introduced the fuel to its cargo activities at the end of 2019.

“This first flight by a Beluga transporter from Broughton, partially fuelled with SAF, marks an important milestone in Airbus’ ambition to decarbonise its industrial operations,” said Tony Derrien, Sustainable Aviation Fuels Project Manager, Airbus.

“Combined with our ongoing research into the potential for 100% SAF in commercial flights, reducing fossil-fuels in our own operations underlines Airbus’ commitment to lessening the impact of our manufacturing footprint and contributing towards a more sustainable future for the aviation sector more generally.”

Sustainable aviation fuels are currently certified by regulators for up to 50% use in commercial flights; the Beluga fleet operating from Broughton will initially be loaded with a 35% blend of non-fossil derived fuel, set to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 400 tonnes over the next three months.

Air Canada granted $5.879 billion federal government bail out

Air Canada confirmed this week that it had managed to secure agreement from the federal governmnet a bailout of  $5.879 billion thanks to the Large Employer Emergency Financing Facility (LEEFF) program.

"Air Canada entered the pandemic more than a year ago with one of the global airline industry's strongest balance sheets relative to its size. We have since raised an additional $6.8 billion in liquidity from our own resources to sustain us through the pandemic, as air traffic ground to a virtual halt in Canada and internationally," said Michael Rousseau, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada.

"The additional liquidity program we are announcing today achieves several aligned objectives as it provides a significant layer of insurance for Air Canada, it enables us to better resolve customer refunds of non-refundable tickets, maintain our workforce and re-enter regional markets. Most importantly, this program provides additional liquidity, if required, to rebuild our business to the benefit of all stakeholders and to remain a significant contributor to the Canadian economy through its recovery and for the long term.

"As vaccine deployments ramp up, we continue to work with the Government of Canada on the evolution of safe and science-based test and quarantine relief measures with a view to safely restarting our sector. We know that Canadians are looking forward to re-connecting with friends and family and taking those long-awaited vacations and business trips and we will be ready to safely connect Canadians within Canada and Canada to the world," said Mr. Rousseau.

Air Pollution, it affects us all.....................

Photo ACL
There is sadly, no doubt that air pollution is a growing problem, not just here in the UK, but also around the world.  It is an issue that affects so many of us either directly or indirectly.  It is causing harm to us,  to our health, our ecosystems, the natural world around us, no matter if you live in a rural or urban area.

The aviation industry, whilst really slow to make a start in realising its responsibilities has been investigating a number of ways to make air travel more sustainable and environmentally sound.

Air pollution occurs when clean air is polluted by particulate matter (PM). This is made up of solid or liquid particles from natural sources such as pollen and desert sand, or from man-made sources, such as dust, soot and smoke.

Man-made PM mainly comes from wood-burning stoves, solid-fuel stoves, and open fires in homes; industrial combustion and processes; and road transport.

Air pollution also comes from gases that have been released into the atmosphere from a wide range of sources, including:

Ammonia – from agricultural fertilisers, manure and human waste.
Nitrogen oxides – for example, from burning fossil fuels for road transport.
Sulphur dioxide – from industrial combustion, energy generation and domestic burning.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) – these can be found in products such as solvents, detergents, and synthetic coatings in paint and soft furnishings.

New logistics building at Brussels Airport

Construction News from Brussels Airport -  The airport has unveiled its newest logistics building at Brucargo West. The new complex with 50,000m² of warehouses, 10,000m² of office space and direct airside access is quite impressive.

The driving principle in the building’s design? Sustainability! The building is energy & water efficient. Part of the roof surface is laid out as a green roof while the entire surface is designed to be fitted out with solar panels in the future and the building is equipped with LED lighting. Rain gardens and infiltration wells improve rainwater infiltration and rainwater pits were installed for harvesting and reusing rainwater. Furthermore, depending on the usage and orientation, rooms are heated or cooled by heat pumps, which also supply the climate ceilings in the offices.

The new logistics building is also especially suitable for the handling of pharma, and in particular vaccines, which is one of the niche markets we have specialised in and for which Brussels Airport is recognised as one of the leading airports in the world.

The new building that accommodates the offices & warehouses of Expeditors, Kuehne+Nagel and Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), is a true landmark on the Brussels Airport site, with a sleek, modern and eco-friendly architectural touch!

San Francisco airport pushes even further with its green credentials - banning the sale of anything in single use plastic either from stores or refreshment concessions.

It'll become even harder to get a drink at San Francisco Airport, if you don't take your own mug or bottle as the management extends its plastic-free policy to include any plastic bottles. From now on, sodas, teas, coffees, juices must be sold in recyclable aluminium, glass or BPI-certified compostable bottles.

The airport was one of the first in the world to prohibit the provision or sale of single-use water bottles in plastic or aseptic paper packaging back in August 2019. This policy has now been expanded to prohibit the sale of any beverages, including sodas, teas, and juices in plastic or aseptic paper packaging.

The airport has sent airport retailers a guide of what it can use, at extra cost, in place of plastic bottles as well as installing '100 hydration stations; across the airport for passenger use. At the same time, the number of food positioning reports with connection to the airport has also increased according to local media.

"This is a significant moment in our goal to achieve zero waste going into landfill," said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. "We took a very important first step two years ago, and today we take the next step towards a plastic-free future. Throughout this journey, it has been our SFO business community which ensures our success, and we thank our partners for having the courage to be leaders in our industry."
