Air traffic and transport figures for January 2020 released by Amsterdam's Schiphol

Air traffic and transport figures for January 2020

In the first month of the new year, the number of passengers rose by 1.4% compared to January 2019 and the number of flights to and from Schiphol rose by 1.0%, partly due to a number of cancellations in the same month last year. On average, the number of seats per flight was just under one seat more than last year. These developments resulted in a total of 5.1 million passengers travelling to, from or via Schiphol in January 2020. The number of cargo flights dropped to 1,011, a decline of 10.2% compared to January last year. As a result, the tonnage of cargo transported decreased by 7.8% compared to the previous year.

Lufthansa Group continues to suspend all flights to mainland China until the end of the winter timetable

Flights to Beijing and Shanghai will be suspended until 28 March / The flight program to and from Hong Kong will be reduced slightly

The safety of its passengers and employees is a top priority for the Lufthansa Group. After a thorough evaluation of all currently available information on the effects of the novel coronavirus, the Lufthansa Group has now decided to cancel the flights of Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian Airlines from/to Beijing and Shanghai until the end of the winter timetable on 28 March. Initially, they had been suspended until 29 February. Flights to Nanjing, Shenyang and Qingdao had already been suspended until the end of the winter timetable.

Due to the current demand situation for flights to and from Hong Kong, slight capacity adjustments will be made: For Lufthansa, some flights will be cancelled. SWISS will be using smaller aircraft on its flights to and from Hong Kong in March.

Passengers whose flight has been cancelled can of course rebook free of charge or receive a refund of their ticket price. These regulations apply to passengers with a ticket issued by Lufthansa, SWISS or Austrian Airlines and for flights with an LH, LX or OS flight number.

The Lufthansa Group will continue to monitor the situation and is in contact with the responsible authorities.

Can improved aircraft design & technology contribute to sustainable aviation?

If the aviation industry is to significantly reduce the CO2 emissions of current and future aircraft, a “one-size-fits-all” approach is no longer enough. Today, innovative aircraft design, new engine technology and improved air traffic management are collectively contributing to the industry’s long-term decarbonisation strategy.

For many, “sustainable aviation” is synonymous with “sustainable aviation fuel,” or fuel produced from recycled materials such as waste by-products. This is because sustainable aviation fuel has the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions across the lifecycle—by up to 80% in some cases—compared to fossil jet fuel, depending on the sustainable feedstock used, production method and airport supply chain. But while sustainable aviation fuel can provide an immediate solution to reduce CO2 emissions in the short term, industry experts agree that other solutions will be needed to tackle the environmental performance of aircraft over the long term.

Today’s aircraft are lighter and more fuel-efficient than they were 50 years ago. In fact, improved fuel efficiency in aircraft has helped to save billions of tons of CO2 since 1990.

The Sky Terrace offers unobstructed views of the intersection of all four runways, allowing for much more plane spotting, with both aircraft takeoffs and landings clearly visible.

Built at the top of the former airport Control Tower, the Sky Terrace is open to the public (no plane ticket required), and includes a SFO Museum exhibit about the history and architecture of the 1954 terminal that once existed in the same area. Guests are welcome to bring food, and by June 2020 a café will be added to the space.
