Look who is going to base two aircraft at Des Moines International Airport (DSM)

It was celebration day at Des Moines International Airport (DSM) last week as State and local officials joined executives from the US budget carrier Allegiant as the company announced plans to establish a two-aircraft base at the airport.

Des Moines International Airport (DSM) will become the leisure airline's 20th base of operations, representing a $50 million investment as it will base two Airbus A320 aircraft there. The plan will bring 66 new, high-wage jobs to the community when the base opens on May 14, 2020.

"For Allegiant to select Des Moines International Airport as a base of operations is a historic day for Des Moines, our airport and the two-and-a-half million passengers who fly through our City each year," said Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie. "The financial investment and well-paying jobs this brings to our community is significant and most appreciated. And to those flight crews and ground personnel who will be our new neighbours, we say thank you for flying Allegiant and welcome to Des Moines."

Qantas seek to cut carbon emissions

The Qantas Group will reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 in a major expansion of the airline’s commitment to a more sustainable aviation industry.
With actions starting from today, the national carrier will:
  • Immediately double the number of flights being offset
  • Cap net emissions from 2020 onwards
  • Invest $50 million over 10 years to help develop a sustainable aviation fuel industry
The announcement means that Qantas is the only airline group to commit to cap its net emissions at 2020 levels, and the second to commit to net zero emissions by 2050.
In total, these commitments are the most ambitious carbon emissions targets of any airline group globally.
Qantas, Jetstar*, QantasLink and Qantas Freight will offset all growth in emissions from domestic and international operations from 2020.
This includes offsetting all net emissions from Project Sunrise, the carrier’s plan to operate non-stop flights from the east coast of Australia to London and New York, should the project proceed. This will also extend to domestic flying, meaning that growth on key routes like Melbourne-Sydney will be carbon neutral.
The aviation industry, which contributes around 2 per cent of global CO2 emissions, has committed to halving emissions by 2050 compared to 2005 levels. It was the first industry to make such commitments. Qantas had signed up to those commitments but will now exceed them.
Qantas will work with industry, research institutions and governments to develop long-term solutions to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the aviation industry over the next three decades.

$206 Million half year profits for Singapore Airlines.

Net profit for the second quarter rose 68 per cent to $94 million
Strong passenger traffic growth continues to support operating performance
Cargo demand remains weak amid trade uncertainties
Vistara accelerates expansion and commences international operations

The SIA Group achieved a net profit of $206 million in the first half of this financial year, $10 million (+5.1%) higher than last year, the airline has reported.  It said revenue rose $418 million (+5.3%), primarily from strong growth in passenger flown revenue, partially offset by a reduction in cargo flown revenue, while higher expenditure (+$431 million or 5.8%) reflected enlarged operations. Accordingly, operating profit for the Group was $413 million, down $13 million or 3.1% compared to the same period last year.

The Group recorded a reduction in share of losses from associated companies (+$36 million), mostly from Virgin Australia, and a higher share of profits from joint venture companies (+$19 million). These were offset by increased net finance charges (-$54 million) due to the recognition of interest expense arising from lease liabilities following the adoption of IFRS 16 Leases and additional financing for fleet renewal and expansion.

Lufthansa's 2019 third-quarter result only slightly below 2018, despite economic slowdown and higher fuel costs

In a challenging operating environment, Lufthansa Group achieved an Adjusted EBIT of EUR 1.3 billion for the third quarter of 2019, only slightly below the EUR 1.4 billion of the prior-year period. Against the backdrop of higher fuel costs, which were EUR 171 million above their 2018 level in the third quarter alone, the Group delivered a sound business performance for the period.

“Our airlines were able to translate their premium quality and market strength into solid third-quarter earnings,” confirms Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board & CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. “At Eurowings, the turnaround measures are showing first results; and at Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Lufthansa Cargo we will be taking tangible corrective action to improve earnings. As Europe’s leading airline group, we are on a sound and stable strategic course.”

The third-quarter earnings were supported by continued strong business on North Atlantic routes. Unit costs were also substantially reduced in the third quarter, particularly at the Network Airlines.

Austrian Airlines suffers significant decline in earnings

Austria’s national carrier,  Austrian Airlines achieved the break-even point after the summer according to its latest figures.  The airline reported adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (adjusted EBIT) of EUR 17 million for the first three quarters of 2019. However, this comprises a drastic decrease in earnings of 85 percent or EUR 93 million compared to the prior-year period (Q1-3 2018: EUR 110 million). Investments in the fleet and service had a positive impact, as reflected in the six percent rise in passenger volume to a total of 11.2 million.

“We succeeded in attracting additional customers despite the competition from low-cost airlines”, states Austrian Airlines CFO Wolfgang Jani. “However, the glut of budget airlines in Vienna and higher jet fuel costs intensify pressure on ticket prices and thus on our earnings”, he adds.
