Mesa Air Group Enters New Agreements with United Airlines for Improved Operating and Financing Terms and Provides Update on CRJ-900 Asset Sale Program

Mesa Air Group, and  United Airlines have agreed to amend its capacity purchase agreement and certain credit agreements between the parties to significantly improve Mesa’s operating income and liquidity over the next twelve months. The Company also issued an update on its efforts to sell excess CRJ-900 assets to reduce debt and bolster liquidity.

United Agreements Highlights:

Increased block-hour rate in United CPA, retroactive to October 1, 2023 through December 31, 2024, projected to generate approximately $63.5 million in incremental revenue over next twelve months
Extinguishment of $12.6 million of outstanding United bridge loan and revolving credit facility debt in exchange for Mesa’s vested equity investment in privately held Heart Aerospace, originally purchased for $5.0 million; Mesa retains 222,222 unvested “penny” warrants1 in Heart
Release as collateral of Mesa’s equity investment in Archer Aviation common stock, comprising 2.27 million vested shares and 1.17 million unvested “penny” warrants1
CRJ-900 Asset Sale Program Update:

Since September 2023, Mesa sold or entered into agreements to sell excess CRJ-900 aircraft and related engines for combined gross proceeds of $198.0 million, which has been and will be used to pay down $174.3 million in debt:
Sold 7 CRJ-900 NextGen aircraft for gross proceeds of $71.2 million
Sold 7 remaining of 11 CRJ-900s previously contracted for sale for gross proceeds of $21.0 million
Entered into agreements to sell 15 CRJ-900 airframes and 65 CF34-8C5 engines to various third parties for total gross proceeds of $105.8 million
Jonathan Ornstein, Chairman and CEO, said, “Following exhaustive negotiations over the past year, we reached several agreements with United that will increase rates per block-hour to long-sought market levels and provide additional liquidity. We believe these new agreements, combined with our CRJ-related asset sales, will enable Mesa to generate substantial incremental contract revenue and improve margins. While the situation remains challenging, this stability is critical as we continue to restore our pilot capabilities, drive increased fleet utilization, and step up block-hour production.

“Without a doubt, the past twelve months concluded a year of restructuring for Mesa’s operations and finances, culminating with the significantly improved agreement with United. We appreciate United’s support, and we are very thankful and proud of our pilots, flight attendants, mechanics, dispatchers, financial personnel, and support staff for their patience and diligent work to facilitate this complex process. I am confident we have the dedicated people to be a strong regional operation for United and for the over six million passengers we safely flew last year.”

United Airlines finds loose bolts during inspections of 737 MAX 9 planes....

United Airlines says it has found bolts in need of "additional tightening" during inspections of Boeing 737 MAX 9 which had been removed from service following the blowout of a doorplug on an Alaska Airlines aircraft last week.

United Airlines said it believed these to be "installation issues" relating to door plugs and these will be "remedied" before the aircraft type can return to operational use.

"Since we began preliminary inspections on Saturday, we have found instances that appear to relate to installation issues in the door plug - for example, bolts that needed additional tightening." the statement said.

The grounding of the 737 MAX 9 jets has caused United to cancel over 200 flights as of Monday and the U.S. mega-carrier expects a significant number of cancellations on Tuesday.  "We have been able to operate some planned flights by switching to other aircraft types, avoiding about 30 cancellations each on Monday and Tuesday,".

United Raises Miles for Make-A-Wish This Holiday Season

This giving season, United is encouraging its customers to donate miles to Make-A-Wish America to support efforts to grant life-changing wishes for children who are battling critical illnesses. According to Make-A-Wish, more than 70 percent of wishes require some form of travel. Every donated United Airlines mile, which never expires, helps children and their families fly across the country to participate in transformative experiences.

More than 70 percent of wishes require some form of travel – United customers have already donated more than 2.3 million miles in December

Airline will match the first 2.5 million miles raised for Make-A-Wish America through Miles on a Mission, United's leading fundraising and crowdsourcing program

During the month of December, United will match the first 2.5 million miles raised for Make-A-Wish America through Miles on a Mission, United's leading fundraising and crowdsourcing program, giving flyers a chance to use their miles for good. So far, more than 2.3 million miles have been donated to Make-A-Wish by MileagePlus members this month.

"We are thrilled to be featured by United's Miles on a Mission program, which will allow us to continue to give wish families a chance to make lasting memories away from hospital rooms," says Leslie Motter, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish America. "Make-A-Wish needs almost 3 billion airline miles to fulfill travel wishes for children battling critical illnesses each year, making it a critical resource to grant the wish of every eligible child waiting."

Make-A-Wish supporters, and its extensive network of over 24,000 volunteers across the U.S. and its territories, help Make-A-Wish grant thousands of wishes each year. When these wishes come true, it creates strength, hope and transformation in a child, giving them the tools they need to fight against and eventually overcome a critical illness.

When you donate, you can give wish kids hope for today – and tomorrow. Meet wish kid Lindsey, who shared that since the start of her cancer treatment, she had her heart set on going to Hawaii. After 3 long years filled with 16 rounds of chemotherapy, 17 surgeries, and many more bumps in the road, Lindsey and her family were thrilled to be passengers on a recent United Flight to her wish destination. "This trip signifies the beginning of a healthy life. One where the hospital is far away. One where I'm a normal student, enjoying all that college has to offer," said Lindsey. "To the amazing flight crew, thank you for your kindness and for making the beginning of my wish so special. Thank you for all that you do."

Since 1986, United Airlines has helped Make-A-Wish grant life-changing travel wishes – experiences that help wish kids and their families replace fear with confidence, sadness with joy, and anxiety with hope.

"Air travel can be a big expense for an organization like Make-A-Wish and these miles can help them focus even more of their resources on creating amazing experiences for children in need," said Helon Hammond, VP of Global Learning, People & Community Impact for United. "Our customers have raised more than 20 million miles over the past five years alone, and we're honoured to feature this longstanding partnership again this holiday season."

United Airlines and Houston Airport System invest more than $2Billion in Terminal B transformation

IAH Terminal B Transformation Program to accommodate a projected 36 million future passengers with brand new gates and amenities for travellers

United Airlines and the Houston Airport System (HAS) announced a landmark investment in United's hub at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) with United's Terminal B Transformation Program. This ambitious project is set to redefine the air travel experience and cater to the future needs of an estimated 36 million passengers. The program encompasses the construction of 40 new gates for both domestic and international travel, ensuring a cutting-edge experience for travellers.

IAH Terminal B Transformation Program to accommodate a projected 36 million future passengers with brand new gates and amenities for travellers

"This investment further supports United's position as Houston's carrier of choice," said Phil Griffith, United's Vice President of IAH. "On behalf of our more than 14,000 employees who call Houston home, I can't wait to continue doing all we can to serve our customers flying to, from and through our hub on more than 400 flights daily."

Travellers will find new conveniences and amenities throughout their airport experience. The Terminal B transformation includes expanding curbside and roadway capacity, along with expanding the ticketing lobby, offering passengers convenience through dynamic signage, intuitive wayfinding systems and a ground-level check-in area. The third floor is expected to house a streamlined security processing area.

Once through security, the New Terminal B North expansion comprises two new passenger concourses, replacing the 1969-era Flight Stations. The Terminal B North Concourse, spanning approximately 765,000 square feet over three levels, will house 22 narrow-body gates. Additionally, a large United ClubSM at the mezzanine level will offer unobstructed airfield views, set to become the largest club in the United system.

The Terminal B South Concourse project involves converting 30 gates that currently house smaller, 50-seat regional jets to accommodate larger, two-class regional jets . Unlike in the current terminal, all flights will be boarded via jet bridge.

The concourse design caters to a multitude of travelers and is expected to feature amenities like a sensory room, a multimedia interactive United-branded "park," and comfort zones for passengers with disabilities that provides a quiet space for those needing to decompress between TSA and boarding processing. The project will also include two major concessions hubs, offering 115,000 square feet of state-of-the-art food and retail space including unique dining and shopping experiences.

The baggage claim hall will be expanded, and a new baggage handling system, equipped with advanced baggage tracking technology, will support increased capacity.

"The expansion of Terminal B underscores the shared commitment between United Airlines and the City of Houston to enhance Bush Airport and Houston's economy," said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. "This redevelopment program will bring nearly 3,000 new jobs to Houston. The bigger and more modern domestic terminal will amplify Houston's reputation as a premier destination and cultivate even more opportunities for future economic development. As a global city and a sought-after destination, larger and more efficient aircraft flying to Houston will improve the passenger experience and support our promise to advance sustainable practices."

United Airlines expects to invest more than $1.9 billion in the Terminal B Transformation Program and the City of Houston expects to fund $624 million in enabling projects required for the program. On Wednesday, November 15, 2023, Houston City Council approved and authorized a Memorandum of Agreement between the City of Houston and United Airlines. The City of Houston intends to submit, for City Council approval, requests for the appropriation of funds in several tranches throughout the project.

The enabling project costs assumed by the City of Houston are fully recoverable over time and after the project's completion through rates and charges payable by airlines and other operators at IAH with whom the City has agreements. The funding to be provided by the Houston Airport System enterprise fund is consistent with federal law as an appropriate use of airport revenues.

"The redevelopment of one of Bush Airport's oldest terminals is a symbol of the crucial role air service plays in the economic vitality of Houston. Our long-standing partnership with United Airlines has led to this historic growth and revitalization opportunity for Houston Airports," said Mario Diaz, Aviation Director for the City of Houston. "As we make significant progress on the new international terminal at Bush Airport to meet the growing demand for international travel, United Airlines' Terminal B transformation will help Houston meet the growing demand for domestic travel. Today's decision underscores our strategy to gain passengers' trust by providing safe, clean, world-class facilities with outstanding 5-star customer service."

Construction and design

The IAH Terminal B Transformation Program, spearheaded by the seasoned Program Management team at AvAirPros and STV, comprises three pivotal components:

The Terminal B arrival and departure hall is designed by Page, a full-service design, architecture and engineering firm based in Houston; and Grimshaw Architects, a London-based architectural firm and will be constructed by Clark Construction.
The Terminal B Concourses designed by PGAL, a Houston-based international design firm specializing in architecture, interiors, and engineering, and to be built by Manhattan Construction, a Houston-based company.
The Baggage Handling System, will be designed by Siemens', employing their expertise in design and construction of these highly technical systems.
"At Clark Construction, we pride ourselves on building projects that matter to the communities where we live and work," said Cara Lanigan, CEO of Clark Construction's Central Group. "We're humbled by the opportunity to work alongside United Airlines and the entire IAH Terminal B Transformation Team to enhance the traveller experience while creating job opportunities for the local Houston community."

United wants to become the first U.S. carrier to fly nonstop between Houston and Tokyo-Haneda airports

United Airlines confirmed it has filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for daily nonstop flights between Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport and Tokyo's Haneda Airport. If approved, United will become the first U.S. carrier to fly nonstop service between Houston and Haneda. This new route will benefit the Houston region's rapidly growing population, 240+ Japanese-affiliated companies, as well as consumers living in communities across the Southern U.S.

The flights will connect 64 communities across the Southern U.S. to Haneda and represent roughly 575,000 annual Tokyo bookings or 21% of all U.S. mainland – Tokyo demand. While Houston has only one flight to Haneda (operated by a foreign carrier), New York/Newark has five, Los Angeles has seven, Chicago has three, and Washington, D.C. and Dallas/Fort Worth each have two. This new route will deliver more parity among major markets, while providing needed seats and travel flexibility to business and leisure travelers alike.

"Between its steadily growing population and its booming energy and innovation sectors, the Houston area has transformed into a critical hub for both business and leisure travel," said Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President, Global Network Planning and Alliances at United Airlines. "If awarded by the DOT, this new service will enhance travel options to Tokyo Haneda for consumers across the Southern United States, and strengthen the economic partnership between Japan and more than 240 affiliated businesses in the greater Houston area."

United Airlines gives U.S. Army Reservists and Students a direct way in to become airline maintenance technicians

Calibrate Technician Pathway Program establishes partnerships with the U.S. Army Reserve, National Aviation Academy, Aviation Institute of Maintenance and Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics

United expects to bring up to 300 eligible students annually; it plans to hire thousands of new maintenance technicians by 2026

The U.S. mega carrier, United has just announced the launch of the Calibrate Technician Pathway Program giving U.S. Army reservists and students from three prominent aviation maintenance schools a direct pathway to lucrative careers as technicians at the airline. In this initial phase of the program, United will establish partnerships with the U.S. Army Reserve in their Aviation Command Unit, National Aviation Academy, Aviation Institute of Maintenance and Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics with plans to bring in up to 300 eligible students per year.

This new program is in support of the airline's United Next growth plan – where the airline expects to take the delivery of 800 new aircraft between 2023 and 2032. United has already hired more than 3,200 technicians in the last 18 months and plans to hire thousands more by 2026 to support all the new planes entering the fleet.

"Investments in new aircraft and facilities require that we also increase our pipeline of maintenance technicians that will ensure our expansive fleet, facilities and equipment are safely and efficiently maintained," said Simone Drakes, Managing Director of Calibrate at United Airlines. "Launching this new program alongside highly regarded institutions whose high-quality training and aviation education will help us to reach our United Next and maintenance technician hiring goals."

Once accepted into the Calibrate Technician Pathway Program, students must maintain a high GPA and strong attendance record to remain in the hiring pool after graduation. United will host interviews, open houses and career fairs at each of the schools. With the U.S. Army Reserve, United will host career fairs within the Aviation Command Unit's local communities and provide guidance on Airframe and PowerPlant certification programs to reservists. Recruiting through the U.S. Army Reserve will also help support United's hiring goals for ground service equipment and facilities technicians.

In partnership with United's talent acquisition team, reservists and students will be invited to apply and interview at the airline's Tech Ops Recruiting Center in Houston as a final step after completing all necessary certifications on their own. Participants will have priority screening consideration and benefit from United's large ecosystem, including access to mentorship opportunities with seasoned maintenance technicians and its 42 domestic Technical Operations stations. In the future, the airline plans to expand the program to also include its United Express carriers and Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul partners.

United Next

In 2021, United announced its United Next strategy anchored by the biggest aircraft purchase made by a U.S. airline in a decade – 270 single-aisle Boeing and Airbus planes – allowing the airline to increase the number of planes in its fleet and their average size. The historic purchase was followed by the largest widebody order by a U.S. carrier in commercial aviation history: 100 Boeing 787 Dreamliners with options to purchase 100 more. And the recent triple-digit aircraft order gives the airline additional flexibility for its long-term fleet strategy and bolsters its leadership in global travel for years to come.

With these historic aircraft purchases comes unprecedented growth, including adding 50,000 new team members by 2026. This year alone, United is on track to hire more than 15,000 new team members companywide, including over 2,500 maintenance technicians to be based across our seven hubs and technical operation stations.

The Technician Pathway Program is separate from the current Calibrate Apprenticeship Program and focuses on bringing in fully certified new hires. Last November United, in partnership with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the Federal Aviation Administration, launched Calibrate, an in-house apprenticeship program to help increase its pipeline of maintenance technicians. The inaugural class started in Houston, followed by cohorts in San Francisco and Orlando. The airline will start accepting external applications in 2024, extending the program to its global employee base and external candidates increasing access to lucrative aviation careers.

United Airlines reports record-breaking international performance in third-quarter

United had record-setting profits in both the Atlantic and Pacific regions

Pre-tax income increased 29% y-o-y; on an adjusted basis increased 37%

Delivered strong operational performance, with September being best on-time performance of the year

Increasingly powerful segmentation strategy proving to be a competitive advantage

United Airlines today reported third-quarter 2023 financial results. The company reported quarterly pre-tax income of $1.5 billion, pre-tax margin of 10.3 % and diluted earnings per share of $3.42 and; on an adjusted basis, pre-tax income of $1.6 billion, pre-tax margin of 10.8% and diluted earnings per share of $3.65.

Total third-quarter top line revenue was up 12.5% year-over-year, a record revenue quarter and near the high end of guidance. United experienced a strong and steady domestic demand environment in the quarter, with 9% revenue growth year-over-year, outpacing second quarter results. The company saw strength in close-in bookings in August and September with both months well ahead of year-over-year demand.

In the international space, profits were at record highs in both the Atlantic and Pacific regions. Revenue in the Atlantic region was up 15% versus the same quarter in 2022, and 70% versus the same quarter in 2019. Pacific revenue exceeded third-quarter 2019 levels despite capacity remaining 24% below third-quarter 2019. Domestic revenues in the quarter were second highest all-time and the domestic system remains solidly profitable.

The company has built a winning strategy around giving customers choice when it comes to the level of service they want. Demand for premium products remains high, with great success in the premium economy cabin where revenue has outpaced capacity growth since its introduction in 2019. In total, revenue from premium products was up 20% year-over-year in the quarter and accounts for more than half of all passenger revenue. Basic Economy has also provided another popular option for customers and has been a great competitive offering with revenue for that product in the quarter up 50% year-over-year.

United continues to see the benefits of having an award-winning airline loyalty program. The third quarter showed a continued multi-year new MileagePlus® member trend, setting a record for third-quarter enrollments and nearly doubling the number of new members versus the third quarter just five years ago. Spending across the U.S. card portfolio year-to-date is up double-digits over the first three quarters of 2022 and this third quarter saw more miles redeemed across the program than any third quarter in history for award travel.

"Thank you to our extraordinary United team who delivered a record-setting operational performance for our customers in August and September," said United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby. "Our strategy to diversify our revenue streams, capitalize on growth opportunities and constantly innovate to enhance our products for our customers is paying off. Our United Next strategy is working and we remain on track to hit our financial targets."

United's bluetooth connecting planes....

The U.S. mega-carrier United showed off the capabilities of its new Bluetooth-enabled planes, with an emphasis on new AirPods Pro features that make it easier for passengers and flight crews to connect and communicate. As part of United Next, the airline's plan to modernize and grow its fleet, the carrier currently has Bluetooth connectivity on more than 100 planes and expects it to be on about 800 aircraft by 2032.

United Promotes Benefits of Bluetooth-Enabled Planes

In addition to seamlessly connecting to United's new seatback screens, travellers can take advantage of other new innovative features when using AirPods Pro, including Conversation Awareness and Adaptive Audio. Now available for all AirPods Pro (2nd generation), Conversation Awareness lowers the volume when the user starts speaking, which can make it easier to communicate with a flight attendant when ordering food and beverages. Additionally, Adaptive Audio is a new listening mode that dynamically blends Transparency mode and Active Noise Cancellation, adjusting the noise control based on the sound in a user's environment – like the roar of plane engines.

"United was the first U.S. airline to roll out Bluetooth, and when we saw Apple's new AirPods features, we knew it could be a game changer for our customers and our employees," said Jason Birnbaum, United's Chief Information Officer. "People want to stay connected while they're in the air, but there's also a lot of interactions between our crew and customers – the technological combination of wireless connectivity, Conversation Awareness and Adaptive Audio result in a great experience for everyone."

Here's how Bluetooth pairing works onboard United's new and retrofit planes:

Select the Bluetooth icon from the toolbar near the bottom of the seatback screen monitor.
Toggle Bluetooth on and ensure your Bluetooth headphones are disconnected from other devices.
After placing them in pairing mode, select the device from your list of available devices.
Enjoy your favourite TV shows, movies, podcasts, curated playlists and more without wired headphones!
For more than ten years, United has integrated Apple products across its operation to enhance the customer experience, including things like:

United Raises Airline Miles for Special Olympics During National Disabilities Employment Awareness Month

United is raising airline miles for Special Olympics during National Disabilities Employment Awareness Month to help athletes fly to training and competitions across the country and around the world.

During October, the airline's industry-leading crowdsourcing program, Miles on a Mission, will spotlight Special Olympics and encourage loyalty program members to donate unused miles for a charitable cause. Last year, Special Olympics athletes participated in over 100,000 games, trainings and competitions.

United's long-standing partnership with Special Olympics extends beyond raising miles – the airline also sponsors Special Olympics Plane Pull® competitions, local volunteer events and Special Olympics World Games. In 2019, United launched the Special Olympics Service Ambassador (SOSA) Program, where Special Olympics athletes work in airports as part-time employees, welcoming United customers and helping them find check-in kiosks, where to drop bags and how to find TSA PreCheck lines. There are currently 18 SOSAs working at United's hubs in Chicago, Houston, Denver and Washington, D.C.

"At United, we strive to create an environment where acceptance and appreciation of everyone is the norm," said Helon Hammond, VP of Global Learning, People & Community Impact for United. "We're proud to partner with Special Olympics not only to raise miles to support athletes and teams in competition, but through volunteer events and our SOSA program to empower all individuals with intellectual disabilities."

Donated miles help support Special Olympics' travel across the globe. Since 2017, United has contributed more than $8.5 million in travel and cash to support Special Olympics' athletes. These events foster inclusive and engaging experiences and break down stereotypes about people with intellectual disabilities.

"The travel we receive through our partnership with United has allowed hundreds of athletes, coaches, and volunteers to fly to trainings and competitions around the world," said Mary Davis, CEO, Special Olympics. "All athletes deserve to experience the power and joy that sports can bring. Together with United's partnership, we're uniquely able to introduce these experiences to more of our athletes through travel."

Massive 100 aircraft order for United Airlines

United Orders 110 New Aircraft with Deliveries Starting in 2028

New order builds on the early success of United Next strategy
 and includes 50 Boeing 787-9 and 60 A321neo aircraft

United also secures new options for up to 50 more Boeing 787s and new purchase rights for up to 40 A321neos at the end of the decade

The leading U.S. mega-carrier, United Airlines announced orders for 110 more aircraft for delivery beginning in 2028, building on the early success of United Next and adding additional flexibility for its long-term fleet.

Airbus A321neo

United converted previous options and purchase rights into firm orders for 50 Boeing 787-9s for delivery between 2028 through 2031, as well as 60 Airbus A321neos for delivery between 2028 and 2030. The company also secured new options for up to 50 more Boeing 787s and purchase rights for an additional 40 A321neo aircraft at the end of the decade.

"We're building a bright future at United and this order takes our already successful United Next plan into the next decade and beyond," said United CEO Scott Kirby. "Our planning and focus on the long term have helped us surge past other airlines that stood still. I'm convinced our strategy is the right one as we continue to add new, larger aircraft to take full advantage of our growing flying opportunities both internationally and domestically."

United expects to take delivery of about 800 new narrowbody and widebody aircraft between 2023 and the end of 2032.

Larger Aircraft to More Places

A key component of the United Next plan is growth in gauge, essentially flying larger planes with more available seats on the same route. Given that United currently operates out of the largest markets in the country - Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark/NYC, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. - upgauging also boosts overall connectivity domestically and internationally.

In 2019, United averaged 104 seats per North American departure, among the lowest in the industry. By 2027, United expects that number to jump more than 40% to over 145. United now has 180 A321neo and over 370 737 MAX aircraft on firm order through 2030, a combination that will drive the average seats per departure even higher on these larger aircraft, with even lower anticipated per-seat costs.

Fleet Flexibility

United's latest aircraft order starts at the end of the decade and can be used for fleet growth or replacement, depending on the demand and the economic climate at the time. And from a widebody perspective, the 50 incremental 787-9s that United ordered today will allow the airline to further simplify its international fleet – another benefit to customers and employees as well as an area of cost savings.

United is already the largest carrier across the Atlantic and Pacific. The airline now has 150 Boeing 787s on firm order – more than any airline in the world.

New Customer Amenities and Lower Carbon Emissions

The new aircraft in today's order will have the same customer amenities, technological innovations and fuel efficiency benefits as previous United Next narrowbody and widebody orders. For narrowbodies, these include seatback screens in every seat, enough overhead room for everyone's carry-on, Bluetooth connectivity, and fast Wi-Fi. And each new widebody features United Polaris® business class, where customers get their own pod with a lie-flat seats and 16-inch seatback screens. The airline recently announced new business class amenity products and services from Therabody and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Plus, these new aircraft will continue to reduce United's per-seat carbon emissions compared to the older models they replace, in line with the airline's expectation to be net zero by 2050 by reducing GHG emissions 100% without relying on traditional carbon offsets. According to Boeing, the 787 Dreamliner contributes up to a 25% improvement in fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions per seat compared with the airplanes it replaces and according to Airbus, the A321neo brings a 50% noise reduction and more than 20% fuel savings and CO2 reduction compared to previous generation single-aisle aircraft.

United expects that 75% of its fleet will be new-generation by 2030.

United introduces new amenities from Therabody and Saks Fifth Avenue

The largest overhaul since 2016 of United Polaris – the airline's international business class – comes as international demand surges and United grows as the largest carrier across the Atlantic and Pacific

New onboard products include complimentary eye serum, face spray, hand cream, cleansing towelette, cool gel pillow and day blanket, as well access to Therabody wellness products in United Polaris lounges and inflight wellness videos

According to new survey, 83% of international travellers say catching up on sleep is important on a flight, and 61% book flights with sleep in mind*

United announced the largest upgrade to its United Polaris international business class experience in seven years, debuting new in-airport and onboard amenities from Therabody® and Saks Fifth Avenue that are designed to give customers "the best sleep in the sky."

The new Therabody offerings include an onboard amenity kit that features an eye serum, face spray, hand cream and cleansing towelette exclusive to United customers.

According to a recent survey, 83% of international travellers say catching up on sleep is important on a flight, and 61% book flights with sleep in mind*. Many international travellers say that getting good sleep is more important than most aspects of the inflight experience; 66% say sleep on a flight is more important than having access to Wi-Fi, 74% say it's more important than bingeing their favourite shows and 61% say it's more important than the beverage service.

The new Therabody offerings include an onboard amenity kit that features an eye serum, face spray, hand cream and cleansing towelette exclusive to United customers, as well as access to the award-winning Therabody devices like the Lounger, Theragun and RecoveryAir JetBoots in United Polaris lounges and inflight wellness videos on the airline's Inflight Entertainment screens. The new Saks Fifth Avenue bedding includes select items that are made with recycled plastic, aligned with United's commitment to reducing its environmental impact, and features a new limited-edition day blanket from fashion designer Claude Kameni, who was named as one of the most influential Black designers to watch in 2023.

United is adding these new amenities as demand for international travel surges and the carrier continues to expand its role as the largest airline across both the Atlantic and Pacific. So far this year, the airline's international bookings are up 20% overall compared to 2022 and customers are booking premium cabin seats – United Polaris and United Premium Plus® – 30% more than last year.

United Improves Travel Experience For Customers Who Use Personal Wheelchairs

First-of-its-kind digital flight filter helps determine which aircraft can accommodate different sized chairs, better ensuring safe and secure handling for these special items

In another industry first, United will reimburse customers for any increase in fare if an alternate flight is needed to accommodate their personal wheelchair

United Airlines has just announced new technologies and policies to improve the travel experience for customers who use a wheelchair, including a new digital filter on united.com that helps determine which aircraft can accommodate different-sized chairs, and refunding the fare difference if a higher-fare flight is needed to accommodate a specific wheelchair size. United expects to launch these new tools early next year.

"By offering customers an easy way to know if their personal wheelchair fits on a particular airplane, we can give them the peace of mind they deserve when they fly with us," said Linda Jojo, Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Officer for United. "Plus, collecting this information ahead of time ensures our team can handle these special items with proper care and attention."

New Flight Filter and Fare Reimbursement

The new flight filter on united.com will enable customers to enter the unique dimensions of their personal wheelchair as part of the flight search. The search results will then prioritize flight options on aircraft with cargo hold doors large enough to accommodate the wheelchair dimensions. The size of aircraft cargo hold doors varies, so some aircraft are better able than others to handle larger motorized wheelchairs, which must travel upright.

If a customer is unable to take a preferred flight because their wheelchair will not fit through the aircraft's cargo door – and takes a United flight with a higher-fare that can accommodate their wheelchair on the same day and between the same origin and destination – the customer may seek a refund of the fare difference. Customers seeking a refund of the fare difference will need to follow United's process, including completing a short form after they've traveled. United will promptly ensure they receive the difference in fare after review.
