Frost & Sullivan Analyses Airport Commercial Operations across the World

By analyzing macro and micro factors affecting operations, any airport can identify risks, growth opportunities, and the competition.

Frost & Sullivan has developed an Airport Commercial Situational Awareness Report (ACSAR) to provide a standardized framework covering all aspects involved with airports. It includes insights on airports from six regions—Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America—categorized under four tiers based on passenger volume. This study establishes a fundamental tool that generates commercial awareness of the region, area, competition, customers and airport. By analyzing macro and micro factors affecting operations, any airport can identify risks to be mitigated, growth opportunities, and the competition. Airlines 4 Europe issue a roadmap to restore air travel for summer 2021.

One year into the COVID-19 pandemic and faced with new variants and a third wave in most of Europe, we continue to be faced with diverging national requirements, often introduced at very short notice. As European associations representing the aviation sector,1 we call for a truly coordinated approach among European Member States, providing transparency and predictability for citizens and businesses 2.

European airlines and the wider aviation sector, as well as travellers need to understand the rules that will be in place to have the necessary confidence to plan and book their summer holidays. Recent polling 3 showed that 54% of Europeans aim to take a trip before the end of July 2021, revealing the strong pent-up demand for mobility. Among this group, 41% wish to travel to another European country, underlining the benefit of a common EU approach.

The ongoing rollout of vaccination and increasing levels of protection among the population should be reflected in a common approach and progressive removal of national travel restrictions. Similarly, the proposed Digital Green Certificate will contribute to restore freedom of movement.

Ethiopian Airlines builds success on A350 “Preighter”

The East African airline has continued to fly and create new business since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the A350-900 is part of this success.

Some 60 percent of the world’s fleet was grounded in 2020 due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on air transport, as aviation industry estimates show. The impact of the pandemic took a noticeable effect from March 2020 when the number of flights dropped significantly, as a direct consequence of the collapse in passenger demand.

Most companies booked massive financial losses, making 2020 the worst year in the aviation industry financially speaking. Interestingly, Ethiopian Airlines was among those which remained “cash positive” during this period.

Cargo boost to operations

March 2020 is precisely the month when Ethiopian started to operate its first cargo-only service on a passenger aircraft. The Addis Ababa-based carrier made the crucial decision to temporarily convert part of its fleet to carry cargo rather than passengers. Since then, the company has boosted its capacity on cargo operations.

This remarkable agility at all levels of the company enabled Ethiopian to meet the cargo demand which was increasing at that time. Its “preighters” – passenger aircraft carrying cargo in the cabin - transported tonnes of masks and medical products, as well as industrial products and goods such as mobile phones, IT equipment, and clothing.

In a recent communication, the company indicated it had “operated 5,645 cargo flights on the cabin of passenger aircraft and transported more than 121,750 tonnes of cargo across its vast global network. The flights added an immense value to the total of 33,182 flights and 735,869 tonnes of cargo transported during the period from March 25, 2020 to March 25,2021”.

Iberia becomes first airline to go live with IATA Travel Pass in Europe-Latin America routes

The leading Spanish airline and part of IAG, Iberia is working with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on the development of the digital health passport known as the IATA Travel Pass, and it will be the first airline to launch it in Europe-Latin America routes, specifically in Uruguay, on its Madrid-Montevideo flights.

The IATA Travel Pass provides a consistent, predictable, and safe framework on a global basis with the dual aims of simplifying the travel experience and encouraging people to fly, while also streamlining the process of verifying the requisite health documents.

Uruguay is the country chosen for launching this application and Iberia customers flying to Montevideo will be the first to try it out.
IATA Travel Pass is a smartphone application that helps passengers to store, manage, and verify their Covid-19 test results, and soon vaccination certificates.
At the airport, they will enjoy a simpler and safer travel experience when they show the IATA Travel Pass, without any physical contact, and with the certainty that are in compliance with the health requisites of their country of destination.
Quironprevención with Recoletas Red Hospitalaria and the Health area of ARQUIMEA are the laboratories taking part in the IATA Travel Pass trial being conducted by Iberia.

, American Airlines is planning to fly all its planes in May

With the rise of vaccination forecasted to bring travelling back to normalcy, Americans are eager to take a much-needed vacation. According to a finance website survey, 57 percent of consumers have a trip planned for 2021, with 16 percent saying they booked the trip right after hearing that the COVID-19 vaccine rollout had begun. Moreover, recent data from travel search site Kayak showed that Caribbean destinations are the most searched international destinations out of US airports.

In response to the uptick, American Airlines is planning to fly all its planes in May. The company is working to increase flight frequencies and cities across its network, including a rapid expansion in Latin America and the Caribbean.

"We're optimistic for the summer of 2021," said Julie Rath, American Airlines vice president of customer experience. "So, we're optimistic that we'll continue to see travel and especially leisure travel as we've been seeing recently, continue to increase," she added.

United Airlines aims for new impressive diversity goal

United Airlines, the only major U.S. airline to own a flight school, will begin accepting applications today as it embarks on an ambitious plan to train 5,000 new pilots by 2030, at least half of them women and people of colour. Backed by scholarship commitments from United Airlines and JPMorgan Chase, United Aviate Academy will create opportunities for thousands of students, including women and people of colour to pursue a career as a commercial airline pilot, one of the most lucrative careers in the industry.

In addition, for those United Aviate Academy students who may need additional financing, United has partnered with Sallie Mae to offer private student loans to ensure that no highly-qualified, highly-motivated, eligible applicants will be turned away solely because they can't afford to enrol. United Aviate Academy expects to enrol 100 students in 2021.

"Over the next decade, United will train 5,000 pilots who will be guaranteed a job with United, after they complete the requirements of the Aviate program – and our plan is for half of them to be women and people of colour," said United CEO Scott Kirby. "We're excited that JPMorgan Chase has agreed to support our work to diversify our pilot ranks and create new opportunities for thousands of women and people of colour who want to pursue a career in aviation."

JetBlue set to reinvent transatlantic economy travel.

JetBlue’s Single-Aisle Airbus A321LR with Airspace by Airbus Interior Enables Attentive Boutique-Style Service with Plenty of Personal Space, Including the Most Legroom in Coach (a)

Unlimited, Free High-Speed Wi-Fi and Live TV Keep Customers in Both Mint and Core Connected Across the Pond

New York's hometown airline JetBlue has released more details regarding its forthcoming transatlantic flight offering. When the carrier launches flights to London later this year, it will bring a whole new level of service and comfort to customers who want a great experience at a low fare.

“From generous personal space, to our innovative build-your-own dining concept, every detail has been thoughtfully designed and will be made even better with the attentive service standards that a single-aisle aircraft allows,” said Jayne O’Brien, head of marketing and loyalty, JetBlue. “We know all too well the pain points of international flying – the dreaded center section, the ‘choice’ of assembly-line chicken or beef, and the lack of connectivity. JetBlue is ready to change all that with our take on transatlantic travel where you are well taken care of and fully connected if you want to be.”

JetBlue’s transatlantic flights will feature its newest innovation – a build-your-own meal designed by the New York-based restaurant group, Dig. In addition to the new complimentary meal service, JetBlue customers will be delighted by the same spacious seating the airline has become known for in the U.S., Caribbean and Latin America. JetBlue’s transatlantic flights will feature the most legroom in coach and seats that are wider than those found on most wide-body aircraft.

Customers in both core and Mint – JetBlue’s recently refreshed premium experience – will be able to stay connected throughout the flight with the airline’s popular unlimited, free high-speed Wi-Fi. In addition, customers will have access to a curated selection of live TV channels focused on news and sports, and an extensive library of seatback entertainment – allowing customers to have a multiple screen experience onboard, just like they do at home.

UK Civil Aviation Authority launches EASA-to-UK pilot licence conversion process

New details of how to transfer a licence published

The UK Civil Aviation Authority has launched a simplified process to allow pilots who transferred their licence and medical certificate to an EU member state in preparation for the end of the transition period to get their UK licence back.

Thousands of pilots transferred their documents to European member states in preparation for the end of the transition period in order to allow them to continue operating EU-registered aircraft.

Now that the UK has left the European aviation system, pilots are able to hold both a UK and European licence - something that was not possible under European regulations.

The new process is available to any pilot who held an EASA flight crew licence before the end of the transition period.

Rob Bishton, Director at the Civil Aviation Authority, said: “I am really pleased we are able to offer this simplified route for pilots wishing to hold both a UK and EASA licence. We know it was a tough decision for many pilots when they transferred their licences to another European member state and hope they will make use of this opportunity.”

More details on the process can be found here.
