Emirates to resume second daily flight to London Stansted

Emirates is ramping up its London Stansted operation by resuming its second daily service to Dubai from May 1, 2023, in response to strong demand.

The additional flight will operate using the airline's wide-body Boeing 777-300ER aircraft with its acclaimed 'Game Changer' First Class product.

The world's largest international airline began serving the airport in June 2018, initially with a daily flight, then a twice-daily service in March 2019.

The route was suspended during the COVID pandemic but was reinstated in August 2022.

Gareth Powell, London Stansted’s Managing Director, said: “The return of Emirates' second daily flight to Dubai is exciting news for passengers and a huge boost for London Stansted Airport, London and the East of England. The decision to have 14 weekly flights from Stansted is a demonstration of the airline's confidence in the demand for long-haul travel from the airport. Since the airline returned to the airport in the summer following the COVID pandemic, the route has been extremely popular, providing onward connections to locations all around the world."

A second daily flight to Stansted is also expected to boost trade and economic growth in the region.

Popular inbound markets include Australia, UAE, India, South Africa, China, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Emirates passengers travelling from London Stansted will also have access to more destinations across the airline’s global network with convenient connection times.

Several popular destinations for UK travellers are Brisbane, Melbourne, Male, Seychelles, Bali, Singapore, Colombo, Bangalore and Bangkok.

Richard Jewsbury, Divisional Vice President, Emirates UK, said: “Since we recommenced services to and from Stansted in August 2022, bookings have continued to surge from the London hub. It is fantastic to be scaling up operations even further this year offering passengers increased connectivity ahead of the popular summer holiday period. Stansted is a key hub for Emirates in the East and Southeast of the UK, and we look forward to welcoming even more passengers onboard.”

The airport recently announced the opening of a new double airbridge enhancing its capability to handle wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777 and the Airbus A380.

Emirates became the first airline to use the new bridge, which enables passengers to board and disembark wide-bodied aircraft more quickly and comfortably.

Passenger numbers up at London Stansted during December....

London Stansted ended 2022 with a continued strong passenger performance as the airport welcomed more than 1.85 million passengers in December.

The monthly total is more than double the number of passengers served in December last year and represents 93% of passengers that used Stansted in the same month in 2019, before the pandemic.

The total number of passengers that passed through the airport in 2022 reached 23.3million, up 226% on 2021.

The strong performance continues to be underpinned by the airport’s extensive European route network, which once again prove extremely popular with passengers, especially with those flying off to visit family and friends over the festive season.

Operational performance in December was also strong, with 99% of passengers passing through security in 15 minutes or less.

The airport received a further boost with news that Emirates is ramping up its London Stansted operation by resuming its second daily service to Dubai from May 1, 2023, which is expected to enable more trade and economic growth in the East of England and London.

Gareth Powell, London Stansted’s Managing Director, said:   “To round the year off with another strong passenger performance in December is a great achievement, and a testament to the strength of Stansted’s route network.

This was the first festive season for three years without travel restrictions, so we were delighted to welcome so many passengers, and I’m equally pleased we were able to provide a strong operational and security performance during such a busy period. This success was down to the hard work and dedication of all our colleagues, and close cooperation and planning with our many partners right across the airport campus.

Stansted’s rapid recovery during 2022 was great news for everyone connected with the airport, but my focus is now on maintaining and building upon that success as well look ahead to what we expect to be an even busier 12 months ahead of us.”

London Stansted records best month yet as strong recovery continues in November

1.83 million passengers travelled through Stansted in November

12-month rolling total now stands at 22.3 million

London Stansted recorded its strongest recovery in passenger volumes yet in November.

The airport welcomed 1.83 million passengers during November, representing 97% of the passengers served in the same month in 2019, the highest proportion of traffic seen at Stansted throughout the recovery period.

In the 12 months ending November 2022, the airport served more than 22.3 million passengers, an increase of 247% on the same period in 2021.

Stansted’s recovery has been driven by its wide range of popular European destinations which continue to prove extremely popular with passengers, with traffic at some points outstripping demand seen before the pandemic.

Operational performance also remained positive with 99% of passengers passing through security in less than 15 minutes.

Ciaron Brannigan, London Stansted’s Commercial Director, said:  “We’re delighted with the continuation of the strong traffic trends in the winter season.  This recovery has been underpinned by the introduction of new routes from Ryanair, including Catania (Italy), Asturias (Spain), Klagenfurt (Austria), Leipzig (Germany and Edinburgh, as well as capacity increases from Play to Reykjavik and Pegasus to Istanbul.

With a busy festive season soon to be upon us, we expect to see passenger demand at the airport remain very strong over the period.”

Eco-garden competition winners announced

Eco-garden competition winners announced as prize pot increases to £60,000

Seven green-thinking local schools have won a share of £60,000 in Stansted Airport's eco-garden competition.

Primary schools within ten miles of the airport were encouraged to submit designs for gardens or green spaces that improve biodiversity to compete for the cash prizes.

A prize fund of £45,000 was initially offered by the airport for the competition but due to the high quality of entries, it decided to award grants to all shortlisted schools, resulting in a total prize pot of £60,000.

The designs were assessed by a panel which included representatives of the airport’s corporate social responsibility team and the Stansted Airport Community Trust.

Various layouts were submitted, including proposals for ponds, outdoor classrooms, sensory gardens, food growing areas, and accessible green spaces.

Bishop's Stortford's Hertfordshire and Essex High School, Hockeril Anglo-European College, Richard Whittington Primary School, Thorn Grove Primary School, Windhill 21 Primary School, St Mary's C of E Primary School in Saffron Walden and Great Easton Primary School are the seven schools sharing the £60,000 prize pot.

Daniel Burford, Stansted Airport’s Community Engagement Manager, said: "We had some really fantastic ideas on our shortlist, and it was really tough to narrow it down, so we decided to award cash prizes to all of the shortlisted schools, increasing the total prize pot from £45,000 to £60,000. We are really pleased with how many entries we had, and the winners should be proud of themselves. We hope that the prize money will make a difference and allow the schools to bring their brilliant ideas to life. These ideas will not only lead to the creation of new wonderful and rich green spaces and provide children with an excellent learning experience, but it will also contribute to their mental and physical well-being and highlight how important it is to respond to today’s climate challenge. Addressing this is one of our key priorities as the airport continues its recovery from the pandemic. We are fully focused on how this can be achieved sustainably and to help accelerate our progress towards becoming a Net Zero Carbon business by 2038, and a Net Zero Carbon industry by 2050.”

Bishop’s Stortford MP Julie Marson said: "I am delighted that so many schools in Bishop’s Stortford have received this fantastic award. Congratulations to them for all their creativity and hard work. Having encouraged headteachers across Hertford and Stortford to sign-up to the eco-schools programme earlier this year, I fully support Stansted’s work to champion this brilliant initiative now. I look forward to following all future progress.”

Windhill Primary in Bishop's Stortford received the good news from councillor Graham McAndrew, executive member for environmental sustainability at East Herts Council. He said: “I would like to congratulate the Windhill 21 Primary School on winning the cash prize in the Stansted Airport Eco Garden competition. It was great meeting the pupils and teachers today and seeing their design and the proposed location of the eco-garden. It will be exciting to see their project come to life.”

Garry LeCount, Uttlesford district councillor, visited St Mary's Primary School in Saffron Walden to announce their success. He said: “It was a pleasure to be invited to St Mary’s and announce that they had been chosen as the winners – it was a lovely surprise for the children. A competition like the Eco-Garden is an excellent way for young people to learn about the importance of protecting the environment and encouraging biodiversity. Congratulations to them.”

Mr Chris Jarmain, Head Teacher at St Mary’s Primary, said: “We were absolutely delighted to receive this exciting grant to create an Eco-Garden for our school, St Mary's, in Saffron Walden. This award will give our pupils the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of managing and maintaining a garden and its tools safely. It will also help the children to understand where food comes from and how to eat healthily and sustainably.  This new area will boost the physical and mental wellbeing of the children as well as their resilience, allowing them to connect with nature in all weathers. Thanks to our Forest School Leader and Sports Leader, Mrs McInnes as well as our Year 6 Eco Committee for putting in all of the hard work on this incredibly important project, which will have so many benefits for our school children for years to come. A truly long-lasting legacy!”

Mr Craig Wood, Head Teacher at Richard Whittington Primary School in Bishop’s Stortford, said: "This was a great competition delivered by the Stansted Airport Community Trust, our pupils thoroughly enjoyed designing the garden and are very excited to turn their dream garden into a learning and well-being space for the whole school.”

The Stansted Airport Community Trust is funding the competition, which supports initiatives in those areas most affected by the airport's operations. The airport has announced that it will donate £1.5 million to the Trust over ten years to support local charities and community projects.

Traffic at MAG airports at its highest level since the pandemic began

The UK’s largest group of airports has seen the strongest month of recovery since the pandemic began, figures for October reveal.

Manchester Airports Group (MAG), which owns and operates Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands Airports, served just more than five million passengers in October - 93% of passengers served in the same month in 2019.

The figure is up 7% on last month, with passenger demand stimulated by the October half-term school holidays.

Both London Stansted and Manchester Airports served around 2.3 million passengers, equating to 94% and 93% of pre-pandemic traffic.

London Stansted  Photo MAG
East Midlands Airport’s recovery also continued, serving more than 350,000 passengers across the month – equivalent to 84% of traffic seen in 2019, which was up 16% month on month.

The Group’s 12-month rolling passenger total was more than 46.7 million which is an increase of 336% on 2021.

As passenger numbers continue to increase close to pre-covid levels, so too have the number of colleagues employed by MAG across its three airports. Since January thousands of new colleagues have started roles across the business. That has meant that, as recovery has continued, service levels have also improved significantly. For example across October, 99% of passengers at London Stansted and East Midlands Airports cleared security in 15 mins or less, with the figure standing at 87% for Manchester Airport.

MAG is now back in its normal recruitment cycle, currently advertising roles in preparation for increased demand in summer 2023.

This will ensure that passengers have the best possible airport experience next year and beyond.

London Stansted opens new double airbridge to boost long-haul capabilities

Photo London Stansted
A new £1.5million double airbridge has opened at London Stansted, boosting the airport's ability to handle long-haul aircraft.

The new bridge, the first of its kind at Stansted, joins the 11 single-door airbridges currently in operation at the airport and has the advantage of providing two main deck entry points for wide-body aircraft, like Boeing 777s, but it can also be used to access the upper deck of Airbus A380s.

The new facility will not only improve the experience and comfort for passengers, but it will also make aircraft turnaround times more efficient for airlines.

First to use the brand-new bridge is Emirates, which resumed daily long-haul flights from London Stansted to Dubai with its Boeing 777-300ER on Aug 1.

London Stansted’s Operations Director, Nick Millar, said:  "This investment marks a significant milestone in our recovery and is part of an ongoing programme of upgrades we're making at the airport to enhance the customer experience. The brand-new airbridge will allow passengers travelling on wide-body aircraft like Emirates’ Boeing 777 to board and disembark more quickly and comfortably using two doors instead of one. We already have the capacity to handle all types of aircraft, but the new bridge will enhance our long-haul handling capabilities, future-proof our airfield infrastructure and improve performance for our passengers and airlines.”

The project, which took three months to complete, also included new fuel hydrants, underground cabling, and modifications to the existing aircraft parking stand facilities.

A number of other facilities have also been upgraded at the airport recently to enhance the passenger experience.

Improvements include a new £70 million hold baggage system that will speed up baggage delivery times, and a £12 million refurbishment of the international departure lounge, boosting the number of shops, restaurants and seating for passengers.

During the summer, passenger numbers reached 90% of pre-pandemic levels. The airport saw 2.6 million passengers use the terminal in August 2022, its busiest month since 2019.

London Stansted receives planning permission for airport solar farm

London Stansted has received planning permission from the Secretary of State for the development of an airport solar farm.

The 14.3MW solar farm will be on land already owned by Stansted immediately to the east of the airport at High House Farm.

The development is designed to meet the airport’s current and increasing electricity demands, including from the growing use of electric vehicles, and is in keeping with the airport’s commitment to make its operations net zero carbon by no later than 2038.

The project will be supported by the implementation of additional screening measures such as planting new trees, hedgerow reinstatement and new hedgerows.

Steve Griffiths, London Stansted’s Managing Director, said: “We are delighted to receive planning permission from the Secretary of State for our 14.3MW solar farm on land owned by the airport next to the main site.

“London Stansted has a long and proud track record of sustainable development, including achieving independently-verified carbon neutral status in 2016 for the airport operations under our direct control.

“The solar farm will enable us to build on this achievement in line with our commitment to make our operations net zero carbon by no later than 2038.

“The development will see the airport generating its own renewable electricity on-site, connecting directly to our own private network, increasing the security of energy supply while at the same time freeing up renewable energy we currently purchase for others to use elsewhere on the grid.

“We will continue to explore new and innovative opportunities as they arise to ensure we deliver the airport’s future growth in the most sustainable and responsible way possible.”

Massive loss of £320 million for Manchester Airports Group.....

Manchester Airports Group has just released details from its full-year results for the period 1 April 2021 – 31 March 2022 which show toe company served 20.5m passengers in 2021/22, up 225% year-on-year.

The Group – which owns and operates Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands Airports also reported massive losses of  £320m for the year.

MAG is preparing for the aviation industry’s busiest period, as the peak summer season approaches. The Group expects passenger volumes over these months to increase to levels close to those seen in 2019, leading to a fuller recovery over the course of 2022/23.

MAG CEO Charlie Cornish said: “With travel restrictions in place for nearly all of the last 12 months, it was another uncertain and unpredictable year for MAG and the wider aviation industry.

“After tentative steps towards recovery last autumn, the emergence of the Omicron variant once again resulted in major barriers for people looking to travel internationally.

“MAG played an industry-leading role in highlighting the ineffectiveness of international travel testing, which helped pave the way for the removal of travel restrictions in spring this year.

“Free of those restrictions, we were confident that airlines and passengers would return quickly to our airports.

“The pace of that recovery has brought its own challenges, and recruitment has taken longer and been more difficult than we anticipated. We’ve now recruited more than 1,500 new staff across MAG since January so that we can give passengers the best possible experience this summer.

Manchester Airports Group continues to see business recovery despite mass passenger disruption.

Manchester Airports Group (MAG) served 80% of its pre-pandemic passenger volumes for the first time in April, underlining the pace of its recovery.

Figures published by the Group - which owns and operates Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands Airports – saw 4.2 million passengers travel through its terminals across the month.

London Stansted continues to recover fastest of all major UK airports, welcoming more than two million passengers in the month, which included the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. That represented 85% of pre-pandemic traffic.

Manchester and East Midlands airports served 79% and 64% of April 2019 traffic respectively. Across the Group, in the space of three months (January to April) recovery in passenger numbers when compared to pre-pandemic levels has increased from 37% to 80%.

MAG CEO Charlie Cornish said: “Recovery across all three of our airports continues at pace, illustrating the huge pent-up demand for international travel we knew was in the market.

“We have worked positively with our airline partners to deliver a full flying schedule for our passengers, ensuring they get away on their trips as planned.  I am pleased with the significant progress we have made and continue to make with our recruitment efforts, which will equip our airports well for the summer.

In April, passenger numbers across the Group were 10% higher than in March, demonstrating the pace at which people are returning to travel. MAG, in partnership with its airlines, has continued its commitment to deliver a full flying schedule, so that travellers can go on their long-awaited trips without fear of last-minute cancellations.

Across the month, MAG has also made progress in its recruitment drive, with hundreds  new staff now deployed across the Group, with more expected to join over the coming weeks."
