Loganair starts Aberdeen - Birmingham

The Scottish regional airline Loganair has from Monday 1st June resumed passenger flights at Birmingham Airport, re-establishing non-stop jet services to Aberdeen as the first step to restoring full services at the Midlands airport after the Covid-19 pandemic and the collapse of Flybe.

The first flight took off at 18:20 from Birmingham to Aberdeen and services will initially operate four times each week – on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays – ahead of an increase to two flights each way per weekday linking Birmingham with Aberdeen from 31 August.

The airline is also pressing ahead with its plans to restore the former Flybe route linking Birmingham with the Isle of Man. Subject to continued progress on easing of lockdown restrictions and travel quarantine restrictions in the Isle of Man, Loganair expects to make a formal announcement about the launch of this service in the coming weeks.

UK Government to safeguard vital Great Britain-Northern Ireland air links

Investment will protect air passenger flights for important routes between Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Photo Derry-Londonderry Airport

Air passenger services between Great Britain and Northern Ireland will be safeguarded through a £5.7 million government investment, announced today by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.

The funding will ensure lifeline services are maintained, protecting key air links across the Union which are vital for connecting critical workers and ensuring that those who need to travel at this time can continue to do so.

The package is being funded by the UK government and the Northern Ireland Executive and will temporarily support airlines and airports that are currently operating, allowing them to continue running air passenger services along 2 routes from Belfast City, and City of Derry, to London during the coronavirus pandemic.

The package will:

Maintain 2 lifeline passenger services (Derry-Londonderry to London and Belfast to London)
International Airlines Group (IAG) (Aer Lingus) will maintain the Belfast to London route which would be at risk without financial assistance given low passenger numbers
Belfast City Airport will provide airport services for the flight to and from London
increased subsidies to Loganair to continue operating the City of Derry Airport (LDY) to London route
support for City of Derry Airport to continue to provide airport services for this route

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: "Maintaining air links between Great Britain and Northern Ireland is vital. We must ensure that critical workers can continue to fly over the Irish Sea, and today’s investment in these lifeline services guarantees that."

Scottish airline Loganair converting aircraft to carry COVID-19 patients for Scottish Ambulance Service

Loganair has confirmed today that it has been working with Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) to provide air ambulance capability - as the Service faces the unprecedented challenges borne by the coronavirus  COVID-19 outbreak.

A Loganair Twin Otter aircraft has been converted into an additional air ambulance aircraft, allowing it to carry Epishuttle isolation pods for the safe carriage of COVID-19 patients by air.

The airline is also working to convert a larger Saab 340 aircraft, capable of operating into all Highlands and Islands airports with the exception of Barra, to become an air ambulance with the capability to carry two Epishuttle pods and accompanying medical teams simultaneously. The airline hopes this aircraft will be available within the next seven days. As Barra, with its unique beach runway, will be served by the smaller Twin Otter.

Loganair to seek more government aid.....

One of the UK's largest regional airlines Loganair is to seek a government bailout as the airline struggles to continue to operate, which it says is due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

Loganair was the sister airline to flyBMI, which went into administration with massive debts in February 2019.  Both airlines were owned by Airline Investments Limited, which has been accused of asset stripping flyBMI in the days and hours before placing it into administration, to avoid paying millions in compensations for delayed and cancelled flights.

Loganair is continuing to fly most routes at present - according to its website the carrier is operating schedules on the following routes until 20th April.

- Aberdeen-Kirkwall
- Aberdeen-Manchester
- Aberdeen-Norwich
- Aberdeen-Sumburgh
- Glasgow-Barra
- Glasgow-Benbecula
- Glasgow-Campbeltown
- Glasgow-Islay
- Glasgow-Stornoway
- Glasgow-Tiree

- Isle of Man-Liverpool
- Isle of Man-Manchester
- Kirkwall-Sumburgh

KLM to add the Scottish islands to its network

KLM and Loganair announced that they have entered into a codeshare agreement, starting March 29. This agreement offers a network extension for both companies.

The two airlines now offer joint flights to Orkney Island, the Shetland Islands and the Scottish Western Isles. Thanks to this new agreement, both KLM and Loganair customers will have access to more destinations. Loganair connects to the extensive KLM network via Aberdeen, Edinburg, Glasgow and Inverness.

"We look forward to working with Loganair, with which we are strengthening our network in the northern part of the United Kingdom. We have found a very reliable partner in Loganair, with whom we can offer passengers more transfer options and extra destinations in this beautiful part of Scotland" Said Jan Vreeburg, director of alliances KLM

Loganair's Chief Commercial Officer, Kay Ryan said: "We have a great working relationship with KLM and this codeshare agreement is a natural progression. We look forward to bringing many more KLM passengers to connect onto our flights with the opportunity to visit our highlands, islands and the wider Loganair network."

Loganair seeks to expand by taking on 16 former Flybe routes

The regional airline Loganair, owned by the same people who owned FlyBMI has reacted to the collapse of Flybe by announcing ambitions plans to take on up to 16 routes the Exeter based airline used to operate.

If the 'Scottish' airline is successful in taking on those routes it would mean an additional 400 flights each week for the company and would be a dramatic increase in operational needs, which many in the industry believe Loganair would be hard placed to provide.

The 16 new routes are from existing Loganair base airports at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Newcastle and will be launched progressively over the next three months. The airline says the majority of these key air routes will commence as early as next week.

Loganair Chief Executive, Jonathan Hinkles, Said: “The collapse of a long-standing airline like Flybe marks a desperately sad day, especially for the airline’s dedicated team of employees and for customers facing disruption to their journeys. By stepping in so quickly with a comprehensive plan, Loganair is aiming to maintain essential air connectivity within the UK regions to keep customers flying...I am confident that the plans being announced today are robust and sustainable, enabling former Flybe customers to benefit from Loganair’s high standards of customer service and on-time performance on a range of new routes"

Loganair halts the launch of Aberdeen - East Midlands service.

The troubled UK regional airline Loganair has halted the launch of its new route between Aberdeen and East Midlands that was scheduled for 24th February.

Loganair, owed by Airline Investments Limited, that also owned FlyBMI before its bankruptcy said in a statement: "During the first few weeks of 2020, the difficult economic circumstances that arose last autumn simply haven't improved. Forward bookings for the Aberdeen to East Midlands route have been well below expectations, and we've therefore reluctantly taken the decision to defer the launch of the route until further notice."

Loganair made losses of nearly £9million in 2018 and is currently late with its account filings for last year, although it is understood those losses have continued to mount, including compensation to passengers over late and cancelled flights.

It is very unlikely the airline will start the route, saying it  "It's very rare that we would take such a step, yet the market conditions simply aren't going to support this brand new route."

Izmir and Aberdeen are added to the 2020 list of destinations served from East Midlands Airport EMA

East Midlands Airport (EMA) welcomes two new routes this year - Izmir in Turkey will be flown by popular UK holiday airline Jet2. Aberdeen the second new route will be flown by Loganair. In addition, TUI is re-introducing flights to Hurghada and, for winter 2020, Sharm El Sheikh, both in Egypt. This brings to 81 the total number of domestic, international, city, beach and ski destinations available from EMA in 2020.

To lift the post-Christmas and New Year blues, many people’s attention will turn to book holidays.

Winter sunshine resorts such as the Canary Islands, Tunisia and those in Southern Spain continue to top the list of destinations for EMA passengers between now and April. Over the coming weeks the airport will also be popular with winter sports enthusiasts flying to Geneva, Salzburg, Chambery, Sofia and Grenoble for their snow fix.

For summer holidays, mainland Spain, the Canaries, Balearics and Portugal will continue to top the list of most popular destinations. And, with 10 Greek destinations to choose from, it means that EMA serves four of the five most popular holiday destinations for UK holiday-makers (Spain, Turkey, Greece & Cyprus).

UK government extends Dundee to London flight route for another year

Dundee and surrounding areas will continue to benefit

from direct flights to London

Direct flights between Dundee and London will be rolled out into 2020, the UK's Aviation Minister Paul Maynard announced recently.  The announcement means that people in Dundee and surrounding areas will be able to continue to enjoy the benefits of direct flights to London. It will also support local jobs and businesses markets across the country.

The route is supported by the Public Service Obligation (PSO), which protects routes that boost tourism, connects the UK and encourages economic growth, and backed by UK government funding.

Airline Loganair has been chosen by Dundee County Council to run the flights along the route, which will run from Dundee Airport to Stansted 11 times per week. The airline has also committed to increasing the size of the planes on the route from a 33 seater aircraft to a 48 seater in May, meaning more people will be able to benefit from the flights.

New East Midland's Airport to Inverness route to boost business.

The recently launched Loganair route between East Midlands Airport (EMA) and Inverness is paving the way for greater collaboration between businesses and academics in the East Midlands and the Highlands and Islands.

While the two regions are geographically very different, there are striking parallels. In much the same way that the East Midlands is often overlooked, particularly in terms of infrastructure investment, Inverness is in the shadows of Scotland’s Central Belt – a corridor between Edinburgh and Glasgow. And yet, also like the East Midlands, Inverness is pioneering some of the most innovative technology especially in the fields of renewable energy and life sciences.

Air route will boost trade and travel opportunities and secure jobs in Derry-Londonderry

People in Derry-Londonderry will continue to enjoy the benefits of direct flights to London thanks to renewed funding from the UK government, the Transport Secretary has announced.

Grant Shapps has confirmed that the UK government, in partnership with the Department for the Economy in Northern Ireland, will continue to subsidise the route between City of Derry Airport and London, with the final destination switching from Stansted to Southend Airport.

The decision demonstrates the government’s continued support for the union and follows the Prime Minister’s promise of £300 million in extra funding to boost growth in the devolved nations.

Grant Shapps, Secretary of State for Transport, said: "This announcement is another demonstration of how the UK government and its resources enhance the everyday lives of the people of Northern Ireland.

I’m backing this route because I understand just how important these daily direct flights linking London and Northern Ireland are. Whether it brings businesses together or reunites loved ones it will enhance connections across the UK."

This public service obligation (PSO) protects an important route which provides a valuable connection for businesses in the region, maintaining 26 flights per week on a 49 seater aircraft. Up to 6 direct trains an hour from London Southend Airport also provide a connection to the City of London in just over 50 minutes.
