We’re delighted to be able to restart our operations between Barcelona and Chile to facilitate the movement of essential foods and support local farming communities.”

IAG Cargo trials first electric terminal tractor at London Heathrow airport

IAG Cargo, the cargo division of International Airlines Group (IAG) has begun to trial the first electric terminal tractor, known as a Terberg YT203EV, at London Heathrow airport. This is the first electric Terberg operating airside worldwide.

By replacing an existing terminal tractor with an electric Terberg, approximately 30 tonnes of CO2 will be saved per vehicle per year – this is the equivalent of planting over 1 million trees or taking more than 6,000 cars off the road.1

Terberg has been creating electric vehicles since 2014 with the team constantly revising the designs. The latest vehicles can deliver the same capability as the current diesel units in a more environmentally sustainable way, allowing drivers to carry out their work pattern whilst avoiding diesel engine emissions. In addition to its electric solution, Terberg are also exploring the development of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, having placed a unit in to test on an off-airfield application. This additional environmentally friendly solution will afford Terberg customers such as IAG Cargo further options to achieve their environmental goals.

IAG Cargo is trialling the electric Terberg YT203EV for 12 months, with the ambition to transition its current diesel fleet to more sustainable alternatives, including electric. In the coming years the trial will help IAG Cargo and its partners understand the challenges the business may face when adopting an electric airside fleet, how future electric vehicles could be charged and what additional infrastructure will be needed to support a fleet of electric terminal tractors.

David Rose, Chief Transformation Officer at IAG Cargo commented: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Terberg to trial the first electric Terberg at London Heathrow - this is an exciting advancement for IAG Cargo as we strive to lead on sustainability and be fit for future.

“We are continuously looking at ways that reduce our impact on the environment whilst improving our customer offering. This trial is part of a wider effort supporting our commitment to making IAG Cargo, and the wider industry, more sustainable. “

Alisdair Couper, Manager Director at Terberg added: “This is another step towards reducing air cargo’s impact on the environment and so we’re thrilled to work with IAG Cargo to see the first electric Terberg already in action at London Heathrow airport.”

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? It's both.... Bob got lost on the way to Gateshead from Guernsey and ended up in Alabama.......

IAG Cargo, the cargo division of International Airlines Group, has safely transported award-winning racing pigeon Bob back home after he took a 4,000-mile detour to America.

In June, Bob took off from Guernsey, he was due to make the 10-hour trip home to Gateshead; however, somehow the pigeon found himself stranded in Alabama after taking a wrong turn. Luckily for Bob, and his owner Alan Todd, the Monroe County Alabama Animal Shelter took Bob in and were able to identify who the pigeon belonged to via his microchip.

Over the last month, IAG Cargo and British Airways have worked together to reunite Alan and Bob – and have flown them both back home to the UK.

Whilst IAG Cargo has been transporting animals ranging from dogs, to lions, to turtles since 1950 – this was the first pet pigeon that the cargo carrier has ever moved. When transporting animals overseas, it is important to check the healthcare requirements for pre-entry and re-entry. For example, Bob has been required to quarantine for a minimum of 30 days, a fee that has been waived by Heathrow animal Reception Centre (HARC).

IAG Cargo is the single business created following the merger of British Airways World Cargo and Iberia Cargo in April 2011. Following the integration of additional airlines into the business, including Aer Lingus, Vueling and bmi, IAG Cargo now covers a global network.

In 2020 IAG Cargo had a commercial revenue of €1,306 million. It has a combined workforce of more than 2,250 people.

Valerie Hadley, Products Manager at IAG Cargo said: “We are glad to have been able to reunite Bob with his owner Alan. It was an amazing and unique experience to fly out to the US to support Bob’s move back to the UK. I’ve helped fly many animals during my time at IAG Cargo. However participating in a rescue mission for a lost and subsequently found racing pigeon is a first. . Although this move wasn’t one we had initially planned for, IAG Cargo’s global network meant we had the capacity and routes available to bring Bob safely back home.”

Bolloré Logistics partners with IAG Cargo to purchase one million litres of sustainable aviation fuel

The sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will be delivered in two shipments, in July 2022 and November 2022, demonstrating IAG Cargo and Bolloré Logistics’ commitment to decarbonising air cargo
The SAF is being sourced by IAG from the producer Phillips 66 Limited, North Lincolnshire, UK
SAF is produced from sustainable used cooking oil and food waste, and can reduce CO2 emissions by over 90% compared to traditional jet fuel

IAG Cargo, the cargo division of International Airlines Group (IAG) reports that it has supported Bolloré Logistics to reduce its CO2 supply chain emissions by purchasing one million litres of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The SAF will be delivered in two shipments, in July 2022 and November 2022 and will reduce approximately 2,400 tonnes of CO2 on a net lifecycle basis.

The SAF will be manufactured at Phillips 66 Humber Refinery in North Lincolnshire UK from sustainable waste feedstocks.

SAF can reduce carbon emissions by over 90% and is widely recognised as the most effective measure to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of air cargo. In April 2021, IAG was the first European airline group to commit to 10% of its fuel to be SAF by 2030.

IAG Cargo is committed to making aviation more sustainable, and over the last year has bought over 10 million litres of SAF to reduce its customers’ supply chain emissions on a net lifecycle basis by approximately 24,400 tonnes of CO2.

John Cheetham, Chief Commercial Officer at IAG Cargo commented: “At IAG Cargo we’re continuing to look at ways to reduce our impact on the environment and so we’re delighted to collaborate with Bolloré Logistics to reduce carbon emissions with the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel.

“Our partnership with Bolloré Logistics is a great example of cross industry engagement needed to support sustainable air cargo.”

In July 2021, Bolloré Logistics announced the launch of AIRsaf, a new offer based on the use of SAF or sustainable aviation fuel to offer its customers the best eco-responsible approach to air freight by reducing carbon emissions by up to 80%. This solution, offered at cost price, relates to one-off or regular shipments made by several airline companies on all geographical routes.

Philippe de Crecy, VP Airfreight Europe of Bolloré Logistics mentions: “This partnership is in line with our “Powering Sustainable Logistics” CSR program. We are indeed committed to cut 30% by 2030, compared to 2019, of our Scope 3 CO2 emissions generated by the execution of transport. This commitment is important to us but moreover for our customers so that they can meet their Carbon emission reduction targets. We want to be a driving force in favor of our clients using these more sustainable solutions for air transportation.”

Simon Holt, Emerging Energy Manager at Phillips 66 commented: “This is just the start of our SAF journey at Phillips 66 as we continue to increase production and work on new pathways.  It is fantastic to see this new supply chain come to life through collaborative relationships working towards a common goal.”

Since the start of the pandemic, the business has completed over 250 cargo-only flights between London-Heathrow and Hong Kong. The early cargo-only flights in April 2020 mainly carried vital PPE, such as hand sanitiser, gloves, masks etc. Then, three months into the pandemic the business saw major uplift of e-commerce and as more people worked from home and upgraded their home tech set-ups, this was reflected in the consignments that were shipped.

In 2021, IAG Cargo saw a 32% increase for its Prioritise service which is popular with e-commerce customers. IAG Cargo anticipates that e-commerce will continue to be a major growth sector for the business into 2022 and beyond. The pandemic has turbocharged an existing trend for the online purchase of goods and services, and this has continued to grow. Additionally, pharmaceuticals, perishables and European supermarket goods are flown into the region.

Daniel Byrne, Regional Commercial Manager UK and Ireland at IAG Cargo said: “I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to add these services, Hong Kong and Bangkok are an important part of our network with goods manufactured in the Far East popular with consumers across the world. With summer shaping up to be a busy period for IAG Cargo and our customers, this airbridge is vital for the movement of e-commerce and perishable foodstuffs, which are in high demand throughout the year.

International Airlines Group Finalizes Agreement for Up to 150 Boeing's troubled MAX Jets.......

Boeing and International Airlines Group confirmed this week that had struck a deal for up to 150 of the firm's troubled MAX jets.  This comprises of an option for 100 jets and a firm order of 50 aircraft, comprising of 737 MAX 8 and MAX 10 models.

Both the aircraft manufacturer and IAG are seeking to mislead passengers, by dropping the MAX mantle from all publicity over the deal, referring to the planes by just the designation of 737-8 and 737-10.

IAG had been talking with a European planemaker about a possible mass order however when Airbus refused to reduce by half the cost of each airline, the airline group, which includes British Airways, Aer Lingus and Iberia headed to the U.S. for a deal.

"The addition of new Boeing 737s is an important part of IAG´s short-haul fleet renewal," said Luis Gallego, IAG´s chief executive, who is banking on these jets to enable the group to be net-zero by 2050. Something which many aviation analysts say is not possible.

IAG is also going to be reducing seat-pitch by cramming in 200 seats to the 737 MAX 8-200 jets which would tie in with rumoured plans to turn all its airlines into a more low-cost model. IAG has said it will seat 230 people in the 737 MAX 10 jets.

"IAG has invested in a sustainable and profitable future, as both variants will significantly lower operating costs and CO2 emissions," said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "Today's agreement for up to 150 aeroplanes, including 100 options, is a welcome addition of the 737 to IAG´s short-haul fleets and reflects our commitment to support the Group's continued network recovery and future growth with Boeing's unrivalled family of aeroplanes."

The 737 MAX variety of aircraft has a chequered history since the two fatal crashes cost the lives of nearly 360 passengers and saw a grounding of the type for nearly two years while Boeing tried to correct the design flaws and manufacturing issues that lead to the two disasters. According to manufacturing reports, some of the MAX jets currently being produced are showing an increased number of flaws or issues as Boeing ramps up production.
