The fourth biggest airline in China, Hainan Airlines has revealed some pretty big expansion plans today. The airline says it will acquire aviation assets valued at 10.48 billion yuan ($1.64 billion) in five companies in order to boost its route network and competitive edge.
The carrier will issue shares to a maximum of 10 investors to raise around 7 billion yuan which it will then use to buy more aircraft and six other projects including pilot training and engine maintenance.
Not only does the airliner want to expand its network, it also wants to develop further in the aviation world through acquisitions. “With the acquisitions, the airline will be able to expand the routes, strengthen development in aviation maintenance, flight training and other services,” the airline said in a statement on the Shanghai stock exchange.

Hainan Airlines Ships Bamboo from Chengdu to Canada for Calgary Pandas
Four giant pandas named Da Mao, Er Shun, Jia Yueyue and Jia Panpan made their debut at the Calgary Zoo earlier this month from their exclusive, newly constructed home, Panda Passage.
The first two pandas in Canada can be dated back to February 1988. At the time, "International Ambassadors of Friendship", Qun Qun and Xi Xi, came for a short stay of seven months.
To best prepare for the new group of pandas' arrival, Calgary zoo not only constructed the Panda Passage with four carefully-designed areas but also organized a team of panda experts to take care of the family's eating and living. What's more, Calgary zoo collaborated with Hainan Airlines to ship bamboo directly from Chengdu to Calgary. Calgary zoo is one of the first zoos outside of China to provide pandas with the 'taste of home'.

Hainan Airlines Named the Cleanest Transpacific Airline
Recently, The International Council on Clean Energy (ICCT) released their new study on fuel-efficiency for 20 airlines operating nonstop flights between the mainland United States, East Asia and Oceania in 2016. China's Hainan Airlines and Japan's All Nippon Airways ranked the first in efficiency performance, leading the least-performing carrier--Qantas Airways--by 64%.
Hainan Airline's high performance reflects its use of Boeing's fuel-efficient aircraft: Dreamliner 787. Of Hainan's 3,200 transpacific flights, covering 9 bases in America and accounting for 14 US-China routes in total, the carrier used Dreamliner 787 for over 80% of these flights. The company currently owns the most US-China routes as well as the biggest fleet of Dreamliner 787, with the total number of 26 aircraft. The use of this aircraft reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 16% compare to other models of aircraft. It also provides travelers with a more comfortable and safe flying experience.

Hainan Airlines' Beijing-Chicago transoceanic passenger flight using biofuels lands successfully
At 12:55 am on November 21, 2017, local time, the maiden voyage of Hainan Airlines flight HU497 successfully landed at Chicago O'Hare Airport after spending 12 hours and 40 minutes in the air. The landing signalled the success of its first transoceanic passenger flight using biofuels on the Beijing-Chicago route, providing a solid demonstration of Sino-US cooperation in terms of environmental responsibility.
The ceremony in celebration of the success of the maiden flight was held on the parking apron at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, with flight partner Boeing and media journalists jointly witnessing the important moment.
To highlight the resolve to discover and deploy sustainable and environmentally responsible solutions, the Hainan Airlines flight not only used biofuels for the passenger flight, but also invited passengers to participate in fun yet informative interactive activities, and promote the "green travel-carbon offset" public interest project jointly launched by Hainan Airlines and the China Green Carbon Foundation. In addition, a series of events focused on educating the general public on how to engage in environmentally responsible travel were also launched.

First biofuel flight for Hainan
Hainan Airlines of China has completed the country's first flight powered by fuel made from waste cooking oil.
The Boeing 737 aircraft had been configured and modified slightly for the purpose of the flight, which took off from Shanghai on Saturday with 100 passengers aboard going to Beijing.
The cooking oil collected from restaurants was used by top Chinese oil company Sinopec to refine the oil and form the special the biofuel. Hainan Airlines vice president Pu Ming personally piloted the flight which used 50-50 mix of biofuel and conventional jet fuel.
Hong Kong-based airlines Dragonair announced a few days ago it had been planning to make China's first ever commercial flight using recycled oil, however, the airline was eventually forced to postpone the flight due permit problems.
According to reports the biofuel used in the Hainan Airlines should emit 50 to 80 per cent less carbon dioxide than traditional aviation fuels, significantly reducing air traffic pollution.

Hainan Airlines Starts Beijing - Boston
A Chinese airline has begun offering the first nonstop service from Boston to Beijing.
Hainan Airlines is offering a least four nonstop flights a week in each direction between Boston and Beijing on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with connections offered to other cities in China including Shanghai.
Flight 481 touched down at Logan International Airport on Friday, becoming the first direct service ever linking Boston and mainland China — and shaving about six hours off of current travel between the two cities. Flight 482 left the Massachusetts capital later Friday and was scheduled to arrive in Beijing Saturday evening.
The Massachusetts Port Authority says the route will meet the strong demand for travel between Beijing and Boston's tourism attractions, higher education institution as well as health care, finance and the biotechnology industries.
