Delta CEO receives honorary PhD and delivers Georgia Tech 2024 Commencement Address

This past Saturday, Delta CEO Ed Bastian received an honorary doctorate degree and delivered the commencement address at Georgia Institute of Technology’s McCamish Pavilion.

Before Bastian addressed the graduates, Georgia Tech President Ángel Cabrera presented him with an honorary degree — the most significant honor a university can bestow upon an individual for their significant contributions to a specific field or society in general.

“One thing that I think tested all of us was the unprecedented pandemic we had to go through,” said Cabrera. “I haven’t met a better leader during those very, very difficult years than Ed Bastian. Not only for what he was doing at Delta, but because of the example that he was setting for the rest of us. And that’s why we’re honouring Ed today.”

After receiving his degree, Bastian gave advice to the bachelor’s and master’s students as they begin the next step of their journeys.

“You are stepping into a world that needs you, more than ever,” said Bastian. “Your energy, passion, creativity, and hope. Our world is ready to be led by those who don’t run from their fears but lead through them.”

Delta Air Lines and The Delta Air Lines Foundation have a long history of supporting Georgia Tech. Delta is a sponsor of Georgia Tech Athletics and has a close association with the Engineering School through their co-op program.

Bastian served as the fourth speaker of five that celebrated the almost 6,000 Georgia Tech graduates. Other commencement speakers included Professor Baratunde Cola, Georgia Power CEO Kim Greene, entrepreneur Chris Klaus and McKinsey & Company Managing Partner Tiffany Burns.

To watch his complete speech, view the video below. Bastian's portion begins at 1:16:12.

Delta Sky Club levels up in Miami with major lounge expansion

On April 9, Delta Sky Club raised the curtain on its newly expanded Miami lounge. With the addition of nearly 4,000 square feet and 100-plus seats to the Club—a capacity increase of more than 50%— the Club now stands at just over 12,000 total square feet, ready to welcome around 300 guests.

“Miami is an important global transport hub, with increasing prominence in the Delta network,” said Claude Roussel, Vice President – Sky Clubs and Lounge Experience. “The expansion and renovation of the MIA Club helps us support the growth in this market and elevates the lounge experience to one suited to the profile of this vibrant city.”

The expansion’s design takes inspiration from Miami’s bright colors and sunny beaches. A new mosaic pays homage to the city’s classic Art Deco architecture, while the overall color palette reflects the nearby turquoise waters, blue sky, and white and gold accents seen in south Florida designs.

The Club expansion features a new service buffet and additional beverage station to support that higher guest volume. Seating in the expansion is tailored to the needs of the business traveler, with single-seat dining tables, a communal table with a charging source in the center, and power outlets at almost every seat. Throughout the Club, seating has been refurbished to match the elevated look of the newly added space.

The Miami expansion kicks off a year of growth for Delta lounges, with two new Delta Sky Clubs coming to Charlotte and Seattle and three highly anticipated Delta One Lounges opening in JFK, LAX and BOS. See the full list of openings here.

Delta puts New York-JFK - Tel Aviv flights back on the schedule from 7th June

Airbus A330 jets to fly the route.
Delta has decided it is safe enough to restart flights from New York's JFK airport to Tel Aviv from 7th June after pausing the service back in October last year.

The U.S. mega-carrier will operate the route on an Airbus A330-900neo aircraft that will provide customers with nearly 2,000 weekly seats from New York to Israel. It said it had made the decision following an extensive security risk assessment and was working in conjunction with government and private-sector partners.

In recent months, Delta has strengthened its presence in Israel through a codeshare arrangement with EL AL Israel Airlines. Delta customers have access to EL AL’s direct services to Tel Aviv from major U.S. cities like New York-JFK, New York-Newark, Boston, Los Angeles, Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

The carrier had initially hoped to bring the route back on 1st May this year, customers currently booked on flights prior to 7th June restart will be proactively notified by the airline and reaccommodated accordingly.

Delta is the Official Airline of the Acea Run Rome The Marathon 2024, the first time Delta will showcase the brand at this iconic event in one of the world’s most historic cities.

In the run-up to the March 17 marathon, Delta will set up a dedicated “Walk in Stand” at the Expo Village in the Palazzo dei Congressi from March 15-16, where the airline will be showcasing its Delta One cabin and onboard amenities, as well as its partnership with Spotify. As part of the activation, passers-by can add their favorite song to a marathon “Run to the Beat” playlist, which will be part of participating runners’ digital kit and be available on Spotify.

"Delta is proud to sponsor the Rome Marathon for the first time. Delta heading back to Venice.....

The U.S. mega-carrier Delta has confirmed it is restarting its nonstop flights between New York-JFK and Venice Marco Polo Airport. The airline will fly daily using a Boeing 767-300 aircraft with 216 seats.

Delta says it will also offer two flights from Venice to Atlanta – resuming its nonstop service later this month and adding a second service throughout the summer. In total, Delta will operate 17 weekly flights between Venice and the U.S. during peak season.

The airline seeks to capitalize on the growing demand following recent news that large cruise ship visits to Venise are going to be restricted and the city barring entry to tourists on certain peak weekends and ket dates.

Delta pilot more than twice over legal alcohol limit before New York bound flight.

A Delta Air Lines pilot was remanded in custody at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today after pleading guilty to reporting for duty as a pilot while being impaired through drink or drugs, it has been reported by the BBC.

Lawrence Russell, 63, failed a breath test at the airport on 16th June last year after he turned up to fly a Boeing 767 to New York.  His blood sample later showed the alcohol level was "not less than 49mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood". The legal limit is just 20mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood.

According to reports, Russell's belongings were searched by airport security officers on the morning of 16th June and he was found to have two bottles of Jägermeister in his luggage - one of which was half full.

Sheriff Alison Stirling deferred the sentence to later this month for the preparation of reports.

Following Russell's arrest last June, the flight to New York had to be cancelled leaving customers' travel plans in chaos and the airline facing a hefty bill to reaccommmodate passengers and crew.

Delta has refused to comment on the case at this stage.

Delta adds second eclipse path-of-totality flight

After selling out its first path-of-totality flight, Delta is adding a second option, which will depart from Dallas-Fort Worth and arrive in Detroit together with the other path-of-totality flight.
After selling out its first special flight in under 24 hours, the U.S. mega-carrier has added a second special flight to enjoy or experience a sky view of the eclipse in the path of totality, this time out of Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) on April 8.

Delta flight 1010 will depart from DFW at 12:30 p.m. CT and arrive in Detroit together with the other path-of-totality flight (DL 1218 from AUS to DTW) at 4:20 p.m. ET*.

Following the first flight announcement flight, searches for flights from AUS-DTW on Delta channels spiked by more than 1,500%**.

DL 1010 will be operated on an A321neo — a larger plane than the AUS-DTW A220-300 — to allow more customers to experience the eclipse path of totality. The A321neo is Delta’s most fuel-efficient aircraft featuring 20 domestic First Class seats, 42 Delta Comfort+ seats and 132 Main Cabin seats, all with memory foam cushioning for improved comfort.

For booking information, visit delta.com.

*While Delta flight plans have been designed to maximize time within the path of totality, this is subject to change due to factors outside of Delta’s control such as weather and air traffic control that could impact timing and aircraft.

Eclipse viewing at 30,000 feet: Delta to offer path-of-totality flight

If you’ve ever wanted to experience a total solar eclipse from the sky, Delta has you covered this April.

The airline is offering a special flight from Austin to Detroit on April 8, 2024, specifically for umbraphiles to be able to spend as much time as possible directly within the path of totality.

Delta flight 1218 will be specifically operated on an A220-300, which will offer especially premium viewing due to the aircraft’s extra-large windows. The flight will depart from Austin at 12:15 p.m. CT and land in Detroit at 4:20 p.m. ET — timed to give those on board the best chance of viewing the solar eclipse at its peak.*

“This flight is the result of significant collaboration and exemplifies the close teamwork Delta is known for — from selecting an aircraft with larger windows to determining the exact departure time from Austin and the experiences at the gate and in the air,” said Eric Beck, Managing Director of Domestic Network Planning. “Thanks to teams across the company, the idea of viewing a total eclipse from the air will become a reality for our customers.”

Even if you aren’t on this special flight, Delta travellers will also have prime eclipse-viewing opportunities on five additional routes on April 8, so don’t forget your protective viewing glasses if you’re on these flights:

DL 5699, DTW-HPN, 2:59 pm EST departure, ERJ-175
DL 924, LAX-DFW, 8:40 am PST departure, A320
DL 2869, LAX-SAT, 9:00 am PST departure, A319
DL 1001, SLC-SAT, 10:08 am MST departure, A220-300
DL 1683, SLC-AUS, 9:55 am MST departure, A320

And for those who would rather catch the solar event from the ground, Delta flies to many destinations that are within the path of totality, including AUS, San Antonio (SAT), and Little Rock, Ark. (LIT).

“The April 8 eclipse is the last total eclipse we’ll see over North America until 2044,” said Warren Weston, Delta Air Lines Lead Meteorologist. “This eclipse will last more than twice as long as the one that occurred in 2017, and the path is nearly twice as wide.”

*While Delta flight plans have been designed to maximize time within the path of totality, this is subject to change due to factors outside of Delta’s control such as weather and air traffic control that could impact timing and aircraft.

Delta's Ed Bastian on the importance of financial well-being

Ed Bastian has authored an open letter
As CEO of Delta Air Lines, Ed Bastian leads 100,000 global professionals who are building the world’s premier international airline, powered by a people-driven, customer-focused culture and spirit of innovation.

Ed Bastian has authored an open letter to business, government and community leaders on the importance of financial well-being and solving the problem of financial insecurity.

This week, Delta Air Lines is doing something extraordinary – paying $1.4 billion in profits directly to our employees, a profit-sharing arrangement for frontline workers unmatched in its scope and impact. Every eligible Delta employee will receive a check that, this year, totals more than 10% of their annual salary. It’s something we do every year on Valentine’s Day to demonstrate our gratitude and love for our people, who serve our customers and ensure their safety and comfort every day.

This year’s payment is no anomaly. Over the past 10 years, Delta has shared more than $1 billion in annual profits with our employees seven times. All told, since we began our profit-sharing program in 2007, the company has paid our employees $11 billion. We are unaware of any major company in our country with a comparable level of success sharing.

Rewarding our people is fundamental to Delta’s values-centered business model. But writing well-earned checks isn’t always enough. Recent data indicates more than 50% of Americans don’t have access to $1,000 in savings in case of a financial emergency. That creates an enormous amount of stress and uncertainty for families across our nation. While we can’t solve the problem for everyone, we wanted to help Delta employees achieve a level of financial security by boosting their savings and financial wellness.

That’s why last year, we launched the Emergency Savings Program, in partnership with Operation HOPE and Fidelity Investments. Participating employees can earn $1,000 from Delta to fund a rainy day account, along with individualized coaching and a host of tools from Operation HOPE and Fidelity to enhance their financial literacy and well-being.

The results have been remarkable. Since the start of the program, more than 35,000 Delta employees have begun contributing towards an emergency savings account. Over 21,000 have completed the program, earning a $1,000 safety net contribution from Delta – and 94% of that group have kept money in their accounts, allowing it to accumulate interest until it’s truly needed for an emergency. Most participating employees are actively growing that safety net with their own earnings, on average saving $74 from every paycheck via payroll deduction.

Delta and LATAM to launch route between Santiago and Orlando

Launching June 16 and operating until Sep. 28, 2024, this seasonal route will have two weekly frequencies between the Chilean capital and one of Florida’s most popular, family-friendly destinations, recognized for its theme parks and tourist attractions.

Delta and LATAM to launch route between Santiago and Orlando

With two flights a week on Thursdays and Sundays, Delta and the LATAM group will reactivate the direct route between Santiago, Chile, and Orlando, Florida. The route will be available from June 16 to Sept. 28, 2024, summer season in the Northern Hemisphere, providing a direct and convenient option for Chileans seeking an escape from the Southern Hemisphere winter to Central Florida’s array of all-ages theme parks and attractions.

The seasonal route - which the LATAM Group is resuming after a pause in 2018 - marks a new step in the Joint Venture between Delta and LATAM after they’ve already launched six new routes directly connecting South America with the United States.

With this new route, Delta and LATAM plan to fly approximately 12,800 customers during the summer season in the United States. Aside from customers from Chile, the route will also make it easier for travellers from Brazil to access Orlando during the peak travel season.

Starting June 16, flights from the Chilean capital to Orlando will take off every Thursday and Sunday at 11:15 a.m. (local time) and arrive at 8:15 p.m. (local time). From Orlando, the flight departures will be every Thursday and Sunday at 10:25 p.m. (local time), arriving in Santiago at 7 a.m. (local time) the next day. Delta to introduce more premium lounges in 2024

2023 saw major upgrades and additions to the Delta Sky Club network, with five new Clubs and two expanded or reopened locations. And 2024 is shaping up to be even more eventful, as Delta’s long-awaited premium lounge experience brings a new, heightened level of service and hospitality to customers in JFK, LAX and BOS.

JFK will host the inaugural premium lounge, a sweeping 38,000-square-foot space that will feature both a full-service brasserie and a casual, chef-assisted market with open kitchens, dedicated wellness areas and more. Just like Delta Sky Clubs, no two premium lounges will be alike; each location will include elements inspired by and unique to its host city.

While access guidelines for the premium lounge are still being finalized, Claude Roussel’s (Vice President – Sky Club and Lounge Experience) vision for the customer is clear. “We want each of our guests to receive a highly personalized and dedicated level of service,” he said. “It’s not enough to have beautiful spaces and exceptional offerings. Premium lounge customers should feel welcomed and known when they walk in the door, just as they would at their favorite hotel or restaurant. We look forward to providing that warm welcome and making ‘premium’ feel personal for each guest.”

Delta will open five new lounges in 2024, adding more than 2,700 seats to its lounge network between 2023 and this year. Here’s a closer look at what eligible customers can look forward to.

New clubs and expansions.
