China Eastern Airlines launches two new direct flights to Italy

China Eastern Airlines (CEA) inaugurated a new direct flight route between Shanghai and Venice that flies three times a week on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

The carrier has also added another Italian destination to its route network in Europe. Operating on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays the airline will link Xi'an and Milan. These routes are operated by Airbus A330 aircraft which feature fast wifi connectivity.  As a demonstration of the technology, the cabin crew on the launch day of the two routes called each other to celebrate. 

These new routes not only provide more convenient travel options for passengers between China and Italy but also open up fresh opportunities for cultural and economic exchanges between the two nations.

With the addition of the two new routes, CEA now operates four direct lines between China and Italy, including existing flights from Shanghai to Rome and Wenzhou to Rome.

This expanded network is expected to further enhance connectivity between China and Italy, as well as in the broader China-Europe region.  It is reported that CEA currently flies to 14 cities and 15 airports across nine European countries, including Paris, Marseille, London, Rome, Milan, Madrid, Frankfurt, and Budapest.

China Eastern Airlines rolls out facilitation measures to improve "China Travel" experiences

Recently, China Eastern Airlines launched its Eastern E-Services travel facilitation series at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, aiming to better facilitate international passengers, baggage services and routes in the Yangtze River delta.

The newly launched services include E-boarding pass, E-transfer, Eastern 24H-transfer service, E-heart service, Efficient declaration, Easy pass, and E-arrival card. They not only offer a seamless, paperless experience from ticket booking and check-in to baggage drop and customs declaration but also make trips more efficient and comfortable for travellers.

Passengers arriving in China on China Eastern Airlines flights via Shanghai Pudong International Airport can easily obtain their electronic boarding passes through the China Eastern Airlines app and enjoy a range of convenient services, including online customs declaration and in-flight entry card submission.

Notably, China Eastern Airlines offers an online transit information submission service for foreign visitors eligible for the 24-hour or 144-hour visa-free transit, which significantly reduces the time needed to complete entry procedures and makes "China travel" smoother.

China's top airlines post losses amid slow international travel

China's leading state-owned airlines posted losses in the first half of the year, weighed down by a slower-than-expected rebound in international travel, domestic oversupply, and more intense competition as aviation capacity returns globally, reports Sophie Yu in Beijing and Lisa Barrington in Seoul.

China's top three airlines - Air China, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines last reported annual net profits in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold.

China Eastern, headquartered in Shanghai, reported a first-half loss of 2.8 billion yuan ($395 million) on Friday, compared with a loss of 6.2 billion in the same six months of last year.

"Ticket prices in the domestic market have decreased year-on-year ... due to intensified competition in the domestic passenger transportation market, lower-than-expected recovery of some international markets, as well as the competition from high-speed rail," it said in a filing.

The country's flagship carrier Air China posted a first-half net loss of 2.78 billion yuan, narrower than a loss of 3.45 billion in the same period last year, it said on Thursday.

China Southern Airlines reported a net loss of 1.23 billion yuan in the first half, narrowing from a 2.9 billion loss a year earlier. The Guangzhou-based airline made a 760 million yuan profit in the first quarter.

Air China said international traffic grew in the first half, with passenger numbers above 80% of 2019's pre-pandemic levels. But it said its traditionally "advantageous" North American routes were recovering slowly.

Low Demand

Flights between China and the United States have been held up by political issues and low demand and are around a fifth of what they were in 2019, flight schedule data from Cirium and China-based aviation data provider VariFlight show.

China Eastern starts flights between Beijing and Xi'an with Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China C919 jets

China Eastern Airlines has started operating flights between Beijing and Xi'an of Shaanxi province with the C919 regional jet. This marks the fifth commercial regular flight operated by China's first self-developed narrow-body jet, reported China Daily.

China Eastern has expanded its Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China C919 fleet to seven and operates them on various routes between Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and Beijing, Chengdu, Xi'an and Guangzhou. 

As of Saturday, the C919 fleet has conducted 3,133 commercial flights, safely carrying nearly 420,000 passenger trips.

China Eastern subsidiary Shanghai Airlines to start Shanghai-Marseille flight on 2nd July

China Eastern Airlines has confirmed it will officially launch a new direct flight between Shanghai and Marseille, France from 2nd July this year.

The new Shanghai-Marseille service will be operated by Shanghai Airlines, a subsidiary of China Eastern Airlines, with three round-trip flights per week on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

The flight numbers are FM871 from Shanghai to Marseille and FM872 for the return leg. The estimated flight time is around 12 hours. The new route will offer gate-to-gate internet service for passengers aboard.

Shanghai, located in east China and the estuary of the Yangtze River, and opening to the Pacific Ocean, Shanghai is one of the most economically vibrant, open, and innovative cities in China. It is dubbed "the grand halls" and the "first stop for inbound travelers to China". Marseille is France's second largest city, the biggest port in southern Europe, and an important hub for Mediterranean shipping and trade. It sits along the world-renowned azure coast of Provence. In 1987, Shanghai and Marseille became sister cities.

China Eastern Airlines carries nearly 16.5 million passengers during Spring Festival

The 2024 Spring Festival travel rush that lasted some 40 days came to an end on March 5. China Eastern Airlines, along with its subsidiaries Shanghai Airlines and China United Airlines, operated a total of 106,800 passenger flights, transporting nearly 16.5 million passengers, with an average load factor exceeding 82%.

According to statistics released by China Eastern Airlines, the airline carried an average of more than 412,400 passengers on a daily basis during the Spring Festival travel rush, with the peak period occurring from Feb. 14 to 16, during which the daily passenger volume exceeded 480,000 for each of those three days.

As the largest home based airline in Shanghai, China Eastern Airlines facilitated over 44,000 arriving and departing flights at the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport during the Spring Festival travel rush. The airline served over 6.85 million passengers, including more than 530,000 transit passengers and over 4,000 unaccompanied minors.

International Students Visit China Eastern Airlines

Nearly 30 overseas students joined an educational tour at the R&D Center of China Eastern Airlines on 8th December, where they had an opportunity to get close to the aviation culture and feel its charm.

Hailing from 7 different countries including Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, the international students test-piloted an A350 flight simulator, learned service procedures alongside flight attendants, and strapped on VR goggles for an immersive virtual aircraft inspection.

Through this activity, the students not only gained knowledge about the structure and functions of aeroplanes but also experienced the charm of aviation services.

They expressed their enthusiasm for the educational tour, stating that it provided them with a deeper understanding of the aviation industry and sparked their interest in pursuing a career in aviation.

During the activity, the students engaged in close exchanges and interactions, sharing their feelings and stories, which deepened their understanding of each other and brought them closer. They forged close friendships and gained valuable experiences.

After receiving commemorative gifts from the staff of China Eastern Airlines, the students wrapped up this visit.

It is reported that China Eastern Airlines has established direct connections to 86 international destinations, covering 31 countries and regions worldwide. With the support of the SkyTeam Alliance, China Eastern Airlines' route network extends to 1,050 destinations in 166 countries and regions, and it has established over 100 overseas offices.

China Eastern to increase weekly international and regional flights

China's civil aviation sector has implemented its new flight schedule for the 2023-2024 winter-spring season starting from October 29, 2023. China Eastern Airlines (China Eastern) plans to operate 3,076 passenger flights on a daily basis in the new flight season, and also increase its seat capacity to 24.84 billion passenger kilometres per month. Meanwhile, its number of international and regional flights, is expected to reach 1,084 per week.

Flights of China Eastern are going to cover 246 domestic and international destinations during the new flight season, including 181 domestic destinations, six regional destinations, and 59 international destinations, according to the airline.

The company disclosed that its number of Shuttle Service and quasi-Shuttle Service routes will reach 41, and the daily number of flights on these routes will stand at about 404 in the new flight season.

China Eastern will also continue to open new international routes and resume international flights on previous routes during the new flight season.

China Eastern Airlines starting a new direct flight between Shanghai and Istanbul

China Eastern Airlines will launch a new direct flight between Shanghai and Istanbul starting on 28th September 2023. This marks the first time a Chinese airline has operated a route between China and Turkey, connecting the two globally renowned cities and important aviation hubs.

The flight numbers for the Shanghai-Istanbul route will be MU703/704, with three weekly flights. Departing from Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 01:30 Beijing time on each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, the flight will arrive at Istanbul Airport at 08:30 local time. The return flights will leave Istanbul Airport at 14:00 local time on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and land at Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 05:30 Beijing time the following day.

Istanbul, situated on both sides of the Bosphorus Strait, is the only city in the world that spans two continents. With the steady and rapid growth of the civil aviation travel market in 2023, China Eastern Airlines is actively expanding its international route network, and the Shanghai-Istanbul route has become a key focus.

The scheduling of the Shanghai-Istanbul flight is designed to benefit both direct passengers and connecting passengers. For direct passengers, it ensures convenient and efficient travel, and for connecting passengers, it provides more options and improves efficiency.

Eastern Air Logistics agrees partnership with WebCargo

Eastern Air Logistics (EAL), the logistics arm of China Eastern Airlines, the first all-cargo airline in China, has announced a new partnership with WebCargo by Freightos, the leading cargo booking and payment platform, to deliver eBooking and payments to global forwarders of all sizes. This partnership provides a seamless, end-to-end solution for customers looking to move cargo from the largest global export country to the West, beginning with ex-China coverage to North America, Europe and Asia, and from Europe to China. Eastern Air Logistics was first made available for bookings on WebCargo last week.

Through this partnership, EAL gains access to WebCargo's extensive network of over 10,000 freight forwarding offices who already conduct thousands of bookings every day.  WebCargo's platform allows EAL to streamline their booking and payment processes, and expand their customer base with an easy and efficient way to price, book, and pay for air freight in just minutes. Freight forwarders around the world have enthusiastically adopted eBookings; at least five large European countries already see 10% of their air cargo being booked  via WebCargo.

Shanghai-Paris is a key route within the "Belt and Road" network. Since its launch in 1998, China Eastern Airlines has been operating on the Shanghai-Paris route for 25 years. China Eastern Airlines has established its European headquarters in Paris, with several sales locations to provide services to passengers.

The direct Shanghai-Madrid flight was inaugurated in 2016, creating a Eurasian air silk road. As the market recovers, China Eastern Airlines will invest more capacity in Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, Europe, Oceania and other international routes in mid and late June.

China Eastern Airlines now operates 844 international and regional flights per week

China Eastern Airlines (CEA) has resumed 70 international and regional routes by mid-April, with an average of 844 flights a week, up 60 percent from March.

Between April 10 and 16, international and regional flights of the Chinese airline carried a total of 103,300 passengers.

It is learned that CEA will launch multiple new international and regional routes this month in Shanghai, Beijing, Xi'an, Kunming and Nanjing, including routes from Kunming Changshui (KMG) to Singapore Changi (SIN), from Xi'an Xianyang (XIY) and Beijing Daxing (PKX) to Moscow Sheremetyevo (SVO), from Nanjing Lukou (NKG) to Taiwan Taoyuan (TPE), and from Shanghai Pudong (PVG) to Yangon (RGN). About 44 new flights are expected to be opened each week.

Since March 26, the CEA flights from Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) and Yantai Penglai (YNT) to Incheon (ICN) will be both increased to seven times a week from the previously two and one.

Besides, a new flight will be launched between Qingdao Liuting (TAO) and Kansai (KIX) three times a week. The flights between Shanghai Pudong (PVG) and Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) will be increased to three times a week and those from Shanghai Pudong (PVG) to Jeju (CJU) seven times a week.

In addition, CEA will open new routes to meet passengers' travel demand in the summer vacation, including two from Nanjing Lukou (NKG) and Xi'an Xianyang (XIY) to Phuket (HKT).

China Eastern Airlines kicks off busy summer 2023 season

As the largest Shanghai-based airline, China Eastern Airlines (CEA) has restarted multiple flights to and from Gimpo International Airport (GMP), Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), Macao International Airport (MFM), and Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA). It offers check-in, boarding, reception, ticket sales, baggage tracking and other one-stop services at Terminal 1 of the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport.

CEA has resumed the flight between Chengdu and Phuket since March 28, which are scheduled on every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. A single trip takes around four hours.

CEA operates 426 international flights and 186 regional flights per week during the 2023 summer season. Each week, the company operates 612 flights, including 56 flights from the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) to international destinations as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. In particular, 7 flights are scheduled from SHA to GMP each week, 10 to TSA, 18 to MFM and 21 to HKG.

Every week, there are 192.5 international and regional round-trip flights operated by CEA taking off from the Shanghai Pudong International Airport on average. In particular, 134.5 heads for international destinations and 58 for regional destinations.

China Eastern Airlines planning an average of over 2,900 daily flights during spring festival travel rush

Thanks to the resumption and adjustment of international flights and the upcoming Spring Festival, people's travel demand will be further released in early 2023, as they will go sightseeing, visit relatives and friends, or return home for a family reunion during the festival.

China Eastern Airlines (China Eastern) plans to allocate 753 aircraft between Jan. 7 and Feb. 25, with average planned daily flights of over 2,900, and arrange over 6,000 additional flights to meet passengers' air travel demand.

In January, China Eastern's weekly international passenger routes are scheduled to increase to 48, with 184 flights. Among them, three flights per week from Shanghai to Budapest, Auckland and Sydney respectively are scheduled, and more flights from Shanghai to Bangkok, Kunming to Phnom Penh and Hu Chi Minh, Hangzhou to Manila, Qingdao to Dubai and Wenzhou to Rome are planned. China Eastern will also add new flights from Shanghai to Melbourne, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Male and other destinations starting Jan. 23.

As for the Chinese mainland, China Eastern plans to add new flights mainly for passengers returning home, flights to popular tourist destinations including skill resorts and Hainan Province, and flights in Yunnan Province.

China Eastern Airlines unveils new items on in-flight menu

International and regional flights operated by China Eastern Airlines (China Eastern) and its subsidiary Shanghai Airlines will resume normal in-flight meal starting Jan. 8, 2023. In the meantime, China Eastern will update its in-flight menu.

MU Freeze-Dried Fruit Tea, a brand new drink specially designed for China Eastern flights, will be added to the list of beverages, which is known as the "MU Enjoyment" series. Featuring a combination of the fragrant jasmine, kumquat, lemon and passion fruit, the drink will satisfy the taste buds of passengers while providing rich vitamin C for them.

The drink is also convenient and quick to prepare. It can be made with room temperature mineral water or carbonated water. (The new drink will only be served to first class, luxury business class and business class passengers of international and regional flights operated by China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines.)

A special set meal named "MU Catering: Good Fortune in the Year of the Rabbit" will be added to the in-flight menu of international and regional flights operated by China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday, in the hope of sending good wishes to passengers for the Chinese Lunar New Year.

China Eastern has always attached great importance to passengers' in-flight dining experience, and laid emphasis on innovating and updating in-flight menu. Focusing on China Eastern Airlines Smart Aviation

On November 29th, a research report entitled “Research on the Digital Transformation Path of Civil Aviation Industry – A Case Study of China Eastern Airlines and Lufthansa” was published in German, Chinese and English. The report was collaboratively written by senior experts and scholars from the Institute for Technologies and Economics of Lithium (ITEL), Germany and the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), Beijing. Representatives from Embassy of Germany in China, Chinese Embassy in Germany, the Institute of European Studies of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China Eastern Airlines and other organizations attended the conference.

This research report's lead writers are Ulrich Blum, Dean of ITEL and Professor Lan Qingxin, Dean of UIBE Yangtze Delta Region Trade Institute, who have led many important research projects in fields including smart aviation ecosystem, aviation hub construction and smart logistics. The research selected China Eastern Airlines and Lufthansa, the representative civil aviation enterprises of the two countries, as the main research objects, compared the digital development paths of civil aviation in various countries in such aspects as national planning, international environment and technical practice, and probed into the experience and enlightenment of aviation industry in pursuing digital transformation.

As the main research object of this collaborative research, China Eastern Airlines is the seventh largest airline in the world, with its flights reaching 1,036 destinations in 170 countries and regions. The airline has achieved remarkable achievements in many fields, such as in-flight Internet, green flight, and intelligent maintenance and services. Li Zhijun, an executive of the Information Department of China Eastern Airlines, pointed out that the digital transformation of aviation industry must be centered on customer demands.

Recently, China Eastern Airlines organized the 2022 North Bund International Aviation Forum, and discussed the construction of intelligent civil aviation transportation system with more than 150 guests from the global aviation industry. At the forum, the company released major achievements in the endeavors to become a "super carrier" and realize "intelligent aviation". The construction of Smart China Eastern Airlines will greatly boost the brand value of China Eastern Airlines.

China Eastern grounds all Boeing 737-800s following deadly crash...............

The airline China Eastern has confirmed it is grounding all of its Boeing 737-800 jets following the crash of one of its aircraft today, killing all 132 people on board.

The Boeing 737-800, was operating a flight between Kunming Changshui International Airport and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport on Monday morning when it rapidly lost altitude and crashed into the side of a mountain.  The crash then set fire to the bamboo forest which has hampered site investigations.

A Boeing spokesperson said: "We are aware of the initial media reports and are working to gather more information." The firm more recently said "Our thoughts are with the passengers and crew of China Eastern Airlines Flight MU 5735. We are working with our airline customer and are ready to support them."  

According to initial reports, flight MU5735 had been flying at 523mph / 455 knots at approximately 30,000 at around 14:19 when it suddenly dropped in altitude at an alarmingly fast rate before data transmitted by the plane ended just over two minutes later.

Shares in Boeing fell 4.5% after the news broke that another of its 737 jets had crashed, some of its suppliers also saw the value of their shares falling.  France-listed Safran fell 3%,  Spirit AeroSystems Holdings Inc, Hexcel Corp and Triumph Group were all down between 1% and 4%.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said he was 'shocked' by the crash and ordered an “all-out effort” for the rescue operation, he also stated that a full investigation into the crash and to ensure complete civil aviation safety would report as soon as possible. 

Unconfirmed and unverified videos have appeared on social media indicating the aircraft may have dropped vertically with parts of the wings breaking off and falling far from the crash site.

China Eastern Airlines to host 2022 IATA Annual General Meeting

China Eastern Airlines will host the 78th IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, on 19-21 June 2022.  

This will be the third time China will host the global gathering of aviation's top leaders. The AGM was previously held in Beijing in 2012 and in Shanghai in 2002.  

“We look forward to gathering the aviation industry in Shanghai for the 78th IATA AGM. China is a dynamic aviation market, with its domestic travel among the fastest to recover from the damage brought by COVID-19. We are delighted to be able to bring the AGM to China again,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.  

“China Eastern Airlines is excited to host the IATA AGM and to welcome our industry colleagues to our home city of Shanghai. In the 20 years since the AGM was last held in Shanghai, the city has completely changed. We look forward to showcasing our vibrant city and warm Chinese hospitality,” said Liu Shaoyong, Chairman, China Eastern Airlines.  

The decision to host the 78th IATA Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit was made by the 77th AGM and World Air Transport Summit in Boston.
