Still hope for Porter's CSeries dreams.....

Toronto's Porter Airlines hasn't let go of the dream of flying Bombardier CSeries 100 jets from the small, but beautiful Billy Bishop Airport, its CEO revealed last week.

Speaking with Canada's Finacial Post the airlines chief executive Robert Deluce said “We continue to be of the view that it is not really a question of if, it’s a question of when,” and confirmed the airline hadn't yet walked away from its deal with Bombardier for 30 CSeries jet aircraft. Indeed, Porter Airlines still have the deposits in place with the manufacturer, despite the Canadian government decided not to allow jet aircraft from using Billy Bishop.

Mr Deluce remains positive, “I think there is significant growth opportunity available to us. Whether that comes with additional regional routes, or whether a second fleet type gives us the longer-range destinations that come with flying an airplane like the CSeries, that will play out in due course.”

Back in 2013 when the order was announced, Deluce said “The aircraft fits perfectly into our business plans and growth strategy and we are also proud to be the Canadian launch customer for Bombardier’s CSeries aircraft.  We look forward to expanding our network with an all-Bombardier fleet of CS100 jetliners and Q400 turboprops – promoting greener, quieter flying.”

Bombardier 4 - Boeing 0 ITC find in favour of Bombardier

The aviation industry collectively held its breath for a few tense moments on Friday evening as the US International Trade Commission made its final decision in the long-running dispute between Boeing and Bombardier over the Canadian's impressive CSeries aircraft.

The vast majority of industry commentators and aviation analysts were convinced that the US plane giant Boeing would be victorious and the ITC would uphold the almost 300% import duties the US Commerce Department slapped on the CSeries jets.

Boeing had accused Bombardier of selling its CS100 aircraft to Delta at rates below cost price whilst the company was being supported by the Governments of Canada and the UK. It claimed that it had suffered injury by Bombardier's underpricing of the CSeries in the US market, despite it not actually making a competing aircraft in the same category that customers wanted to buy.

However, the US International Trade Commission voted 4-0 to reject Boeing's arguments and discarded the Commerce Department recommendation to impose the 292% tariffs on sales of Candian's CSeries jets for at least the next five years.

"This was not expected." one surprised UK aviation correspondent, told us on Friday night. "All indications were looking in favour of Boeing."

The BBC's Business Correspondent Julian O'Neill said: "This was an unexpected outcome - the UK and Canadian governments had both forecast a home win for Boeing."

Our own analyst and senior correspondent, Jason Shaw, was equally surprised by the announcement "Boeing is such an incredibly powerful company who spend millions and millions of dollars each year on lobbying politicians, trade and regulatory bodies and administrations that I really thought Bombardier would lose out on this occasion.  It seemed almost inevitable, however, the ITC did not bow to outside pressure and looked at the situation dispassionately and impartially."

The UK's Business Secretary Greg Clark said it was "excellent news for the dedicated workforce in Northern Ireland (where the wings for the CSeries are made) and supply chain across the UK, who have a great future ahead.  -  The decision by the International Trade Commission confirms what the UK and Canadian Governments working hand in hand has maintained from the outset, that this case is unjustified. We are pleased that the ITC have now recognised this,"
airBaltic another CSeries customer, praise the aircraft
for its better than expected performance

Prime Minister Theresa May welcomed the move, saying it was "good news" for UK industry, "Bombardier and its innovative workforce play a vital role in the Northern Ireland economy," she said.

The ITC did not give reasons for its unanimous decision on Friday, however, Bombardier, whose shares jumped by 15% on Friday evening released a statement stating  -
Today's decision is a victory for innovation, competition, and the rule of law. It is also a victory for U.S. airlines and the U.S. traveling public. The C Series is the most innovative and efficient new aircraft in a generation. Its development and production represent thousands of jobs in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. We are extremely proud of our employees, investors and suppliers who have worked together to bring this remarkable aircraft to the market. With this matter behind us, we are moving full speed ahead with finalizing our partnership with Airbus. Integration planning is going well and we look forward to delivering the C Series to the U.S. market so that U.S. airlines and the U.S. flying public can enjoy the many benefits of this remarkable aircraft.
This is not the end of the matter, the US Plane maker has already threatened more action against Bombardier, as their statement issued on Friday indicates.
We are disappointed that the International Trade Commission did not recognize the harm that Boeing has suffered from the billions of dollars in illegal government subsidies that the Department of Commerce found Bombardier received and used to dump aircraft in the U.S. small single-aisle airplane market. Those violations have harmed the U.S. aerospace industry, and we are feeling the effects of those unfair business practices in the market every day.
While we disagree with the ITC’s conclusion today, we will review the Commission’s more detailed opinions in full as they are released in the coming days.
Boeing remains confident in the facts of our case and will continue to document any harm to Boeing and our extensive U.S. supply chain that results from illegal subsidies and dumped pricing. We will not stand by as Bombardier’s illegal business practices continue to harm American workers and the aerospace industry they support. Global trade only works if everyone adheres to the rules we have all agreed to. That’s a belief we will continue to defend.
"Boeing remains bullish and seems to suffer from selective memory recall," Jason Shaw says, indicating that many times Boeing products have been sold at prices vastly below its list prices and far lower what numerous analysts estimate are cost prices, yet whilst taken advantage US government investments and substantial tax breaks. He also warned that the dispute isn't yet over, "The US manufacturer can still appeal the decision by the ITC, from its statement, it looks like that is a distinct possibility - we've not heard the last from Boeing on this subject."

EgyptAir Converts Letter of Intent to Firm Order for Bombardier C Series aircraft

Bombardier Commercial Aircraft and EgyptAir Holding Company announced today that the parties have executed a firm agreement for the sale and purchase of 12 CS300 aircraft along with purchase rights for an additional 12 CS300 aircraft.

EgyptAir’s Letter of Intent (LOI) was previously announced on November 14 during the 2017 Dubai Air Show.

“As we look back at the C Series successful entry in service, we are thrilled that its many achievements are paving the way to further success. Welcoming EgyptAir to the family of C Series operators is another landmark moment for Bombardier,” said Fred Cromer, President, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “The aircraft is performing exceptionally well, the industry recognizes the C Series as best in class, and this order from another well-established airline is testament to its tremendous value.”

This order will enable EgyptAir to better serve domestic and regional destinations as well as several European and African destinations.

“The CS300’s unique profitability profile will allow us to open up new opportunities and fits perfectly into our growth strategy,” said Safwat Musallam, Chairman and CEO, EgyptAir.” Our passengers will experience modern and best in class comfort, and we look forward to integrating this innovative and efficient aircraft to our fleet.”

Based on the list price of the CS300 airliner, the firm-order contract would be valued at approximately US $1.1 billion. Should EgyptAir exercise the 12 purchase rights for CS300 aircraft, the contract value would increase to nearly US $2.2 billion.‎

US upholds 300% duties on Bombardier jets.

The United States of America's Commerce Department confirmed on Wednesday it had finalised trade duties of nearly 300 percent on the CSeries of passenger jets made by Canadian firm Bombardier.

That decision brings a bitter and acrimonious trade-war between the US, Canada and the UK a step closer which also threatens to tumble over into other business areas other than aviation.

The Commerce Department first recommended the duties against Bombardier's CSeries jets earlier this year following complaints by American mega-giant manufacturer Boeing. He bemoaned the belief that Bombardier had sold the C Series to US airline Delta at prices below the cost of production.

Many in the aviation industry see Boeing's increasingly Trump-like bullying of Bombardier as absurd, as the US manufacturer doesn't make commercial aircraft of the same size and category as the CSeries from Bombardier. Boeing also relies on similar government subsidies on almost all of its military products as well as taking advantage of various tax breaks and offering such substantial discounts on large orders for its commercial aircraft - so far below list prices, that they defy belief that they can be produced at cost price.

Bombardier said yesterday that the US Commerce Department had not considered that it was industry standard practice to offer discounts to launch customers. "Unfortunately, the Commerce Department decision is divorced from this reality and ignores long-standing business practices in the aerospace industry, including launch pricing and the financing of multibillion-dollar aircraft programs," the company said in a statement. "Moreover, we are deeply disappointed that the Commerce Department did not take this opportunity to rectify its past errors."

Bombardier doesn't deny that Delta received a good price for the 75 C Series aircraft, as initial and early customers hardly ever pay the 'price-list' price and Bombardier CEO Alain Bellemare defended that position, "When you launch a new program you have aggressive pricing to start with,  - Boeing does the same thing."

Delta boss Ed Bastian has called the duties 'absurd' promising the airline won't pay the tariffs and has turned Delta into a non-Boeing airline.

The decision isn't yet final as it is now up to The International Trade Commission, who is scheduled to make a final determination by February. It will see if Boeing has actually been harmed by Bombardier's action.

If the ITC upholds the tariffs in February 2018, not only will it spark the threatened trade war, it will also greatly harm American jobs.  More than half the components used to make the C Series aircraft come from the US. It will also cost US jobs, as Bombardier plans to build the C Series aircraft in an Airbus factory in Mobile, Alabama.

Bombardier and Airbus to partner on C Series

It's been confirmed today that European aerospace firm Airbus is to partner with Canadian firm Bombardier on the C Series programme.

The CSeries programme has faced a series of problems, most recently the trade dispute in the US that could potentially impose a 300% import tariff on the aircraft.

The US aircraft makers Boeing instantly dismissed the new arrangement calling the deal "Questionable"  in posts on social media, "This looks like a questionable deal between two heavily state-subsidized competitors to skirt US Government findings. Everyone should play by the same rules for free and fair trade"
Of course, Boeing don't mention the hundreds of billions of dollars they receive in tax breaks nor the fact that the company received $457 million in federal grants, which are typically non-repayable, between 2000 and 2014. In addition to that, there is the $64 billion in federal loans and loan guarantees.

A corresponding agreement was signed yesterday which brings together Airbus’ global reach with Bombardier’s newest, state-of-the-art jet aircraft family. It is a deal that is designed to fully unlock the value and potential of the C Series jets and create significant new value for customers, suppliers, employees and shareholders.

Under the agreement, Airbus will provide procurement, sales and marketing, and customer support expertise to the C Series Aircraft Limited Partnership (CSALP), the entity that manufactures and sells the C Series. At closing, Airbus will acquire a 50.01% interest in CSALP. Bombardier and Investissement Québec (IQ) will own approximately 31% and 19% respectively.

Boeing V Bombardier - Trade War Looms

Photo Reuters

The battle between the US aviation giant Boeing and the much smaller Canadian manufacturer Bombardier continues to rumble on with almost alarming ferocity.

The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, in Washington for US-Canada trade talks, warned his US counterpart, President Donald Trump he would block Canadian armed forces from buying Boeing aircraft if the US Government presses ahead with its outrageous plans to slap duties and tariffs of 300 percent on Bombardier C Series aeroplanes.

The battle has been bubbling up for some time and many see it as a key ingredient to start a trade war between the North American neighbours. It's already caused consternation and possible trading hostilities between the US and the UK, where the Canadian manufacturer employs some 4000 people making wings for the C Series jets at the former Shorts Brothers factory in Northern Ireland.

Mr Trudeau met Trump at the White House this week for discussions on the North American Free Trade Agreement and confirmed he raised “directly” the Bombardier issue. “I highlighted to the president how we disagree vehemently with Commerce’s decision to bring in countervailing and anti-dumping duties against Bombardier, that we feel this is not something that is warranted and quite frankly something that we look very negatively upon,” The Canadian Prime Minister said after the meeting.
