Barbados welcomes increased British Airways

capacity to the island

The inaugural British Airways 787-10 Dreamliner flight to Barbados took place on Sunday 31 March, 2024 and increases capacity by 10 percent.  The four-class aircraft features an exclusive eight seat First class cabin, the airline’s newest business class seat the Club Suite, in a 48-seat forward-facing cabin, while the World Traveller Plus cabin will offer 35 seats and BA's economy World Traveller cabin with 165 seats..

Cheryl Carter, Director, UK for BTMI said: “We are truly honoured that British Airways has chosen to deploy its prestigious Dreamliner 787-10 aircraft to Barbados. This shows BA’s confidence in the robust passenger demand for travel between the UK and Barbados. We eagerly anticipate welcoming passengers to our beautiful island paradise, and are delighted with the enduring partnership we share with BA.”

Neil Chernoff, British Airways Chief Planning and Strategy Officer, said: "As British Airways celebrates its 70th year of connecting London and Barbados, we are thrilled to be increasing capacity on the route with a larger aircraft and the launch of a new double daily service from Heathrow. This is a testament to the popularity of the route from a leisure and business perspective, and its importance as a link for visiting friends and relatives. Our commitment to this special destination remains as strong as ever, and we are proud to offer unparalleled connectivity and convenience for our customers."

The state-of-the-art, 787-10 Dreamliner aircraft has a carbon fibre fuselage which allows the pressure to be maintained at a lower level in the cabin. The internal cabin altitude is the equivalent of 6,000ft, offering a better level of humidity, and reducing the drying effect of the cabin air, so customers arrive feeling more refreshed. In addition, the aircraft is 20% more fuel efficient than similar-sized commercial jets it aims to replace.

This year also marks the 70th Anniversary of the first British Airways flight to Barbados in 1954, and throughout April, a series of events will be organised to mark this significant milestone.

Carter continued: “As we celebrate the upcoming 70th anniversary of the first British Airways flight to Barbados on the 1st April, this momentous occasion marks not only a milestone in our history but also reaffirms our commitment to a flourishing partnership. We look forward to many more years of collaboration and growth together.”

As Barbados proudly holds the title as the birthplace of rum, passengers flying from the UK to Barbados during the anniversary month will have the exclusive opportunity to indulge in Mount Gay rum [CW1] while on board. Founded and still nestled in Barbados, Mount Gay stands as the world’s oldest running rum distillery, with the rum being offered on British Airways flights, customers will get a taste of Bajan history and tradition as they embark on their journey.

In the north coastal town of Speightstown, you’ll see fishing boats vendors selling fragrant fruits and authentic Bajan art. Just five miles away is Nicholas Abbey, a Jacobean mansion with its own rum distillery. For a touch of opulence, hop aboard the steam train that loops around the handsome gardens. Looking for something more central? Meander through Hunte's Garden, the myriad of colourful flowers, dappled sunlight creates a perfect ambience, whilst classical music plays.

Situated on the east, Bathsheba Bay, otherwise known as the Soup Bowl, has the best beaches which attract surfers with its rolling waves and spectacular craggy rock formations, strewn along the bay. Like Bathsheba, wife of King David, why not reap the benefits of the mineral-enriched waters, to keep your skin looking radiant.

The scintillating south comes alive after dark in St Lawrence Gap. A mile-long street is crammed with bars, restaurants and nightclubs. If you love to party, the choice is as diverse as the people - from Latin parties to Reggae clubs. Or simply sit back and sip coconut water with locals at Dover Beach, under swaying casuarina trees. The best area to stay in Barbados is the west coast because of its pristine beaches and glitzy image, frequented by the glamourous, rich and famous.
