Venice to introduce daily entrance fee

Authorities in the Italian tourist hotspot of Venice are introducing a daily entrance fee to the city to cap tourist numbers from April next year.

The fee is being introduced in stages,  the first period will run on weekends between 25th April and July for all visitors between 0830 and 1600.  The entrance fee is going to be 5 euros per person for anyone over the age of 14 who doesn't either live or work in the city or owns a property there.

The entrance fee will also apply on certain other days during the year, such as holidays and special events when visitor numbers are expected to be at their highest.

Venice visitors will have to book their visit and pay online to obtain a QR code that will be checked at specific entry points before they can gain access to the popular historic areas of the city.

According to officials fines for failing to comply with the entry fee requirement will be between 50 and 310 euros and could see people being deported.
