Woman’s leg amputated at Bangkok airport after getting stuck travellator

A 57-year-old Thai passenger had to have her leg has been amputated in Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport, after becoming stuck on a travellator on Thursday.

The lady had been due to catch a flight to Nakhon Si Thammarat province on Thursday when she became caught up on the moving walkway in terminal two at the airport. Images shared on social media appeared to show the passenger's leg trapped beneath the belt at the end of the walkway with some of the endplates missing.

Despite intense efforts from the medical team sent to assist her, they eventually had to remove her left leg from above the knee, airport officials confirmed in a statement.

Airport director Karun Thanakuljeerapat told local media, "On behalf of the Don Mueang international airport, I’d like to express my deepest condolences regarding the accident. I’d like to insist that we will ensure that no such accident will happen again.”

The airport would cover all the passenger's medical expenses, he said at a news conference and also said the airport would be open to negotiations for other compensation.

According to reports after an initial investigation of the travellator, wheels from the passenger's suitcase were found under the belt and there appeared to be some screws missing, although the exact cause has not yet been established.
