Southwest axing over 8000 flights in June.

The famous low-cost-carrier Southwest has axed thousands of flights from its timetables for June as the airline seeks to avoid the mass disruption caused by staff sickness and a much too hastily arranged bounce back from the pandemic.

The budget airline had originally scheduled some 119,039 flights for June, however, it has slashed that number to 110,789 axing around 8,250 services during the month.  Southwest advised it was currently contacting some of the affected customers to offer them different routes, dates or times.

It is much more common in the US for airlines to cancel flights and adapt schedules between 14 and 90 days before departure that it is in Europe, where compensation rules are more stringent.

The airline expects to operate its summer schedule passed June to almost full effect as pent up desires fuel demand for travel across the whole of the U.S., however perhaps as many as 220 flights a day in July and 170 flights a day in August will be dropped from the timetable.
