Increased summer schedules for SWISS to meet increased demand.

The European Basel based airline, SWISS has seen a recent rise in the number of bookings coming in for the forthcoming summer season,  thanks in part to the mass vaccination campaigns in many EU countries and the UK.

There has also been a general easing of international travel restrictions and border controls that lead the Swiss national airline to believe its route network to 49 destinations from hubs at Zurich and Geneva will meet the anticipated increased demand.

In Europe, it has seen an increased demand for Portugal, Greece and Italy, whilst further afield flights to North America and the United Arab Emirates are in the greatest demand.

The airline is going to operate 125 routes, 85 from Zurich and 40 from Geneva, with a particular focus on leisure and visiting-friends-and-relatives travellers. Whilst this offering is still substantially below the volumes offered before the pandemic, it is a vast improvement on 2020 flight operations.

SWISS will resume recently-suspended services to numerous destinations from Zurich and Geneva over the next few weeks. From Zurich, these include the European destinations of Amsterdam, Bordeaux, Brindisi, Cork, Florence, Heringsdorf, Ljubljana, Marseille, Milan and Oslo. Long-haul services to Cairo and Los Angeles will also be restored. And new services will be offered from Zurich to Billund and Tallinn.

Travellers from Geneva will enjoy direct SWISS services to Alicante, Biarritz, Brindisi, Catania, Corfu, Faro, Heraklion, Ibiza, Mykonos and Thessaloniki. SWISS will also be newly adding Funchal, Ponta Delgada, Santorini and Split to its Geneva-based network.

SWISS is lobbying, both in Switzerland and elsewhere for the adoption of an internationally recognized digital health certificate that will help bring simplicity and reliability to the travel experience.  “It’s a major aim of ours to make our customers’ air travel simple and reliable,” explains Tamur Goudarzi Pour, SWISS Chief Commercial Officer “And what SWISS travellers need for this summer is a standardized and internationally recognized digital health passport certificating their vaccinations, their COVID test results and/or their COVID recovery.”

“The rise that we have recently seen in our bookings for the summer months clearly shows us how keen people are to travel,” says Tamur. “And we are striving to satisfy this desire by offering a programme of flights that is as comprehensive as possible and as tailored as possible to market demand. We also expect to see further increases in bookings over the summer months. All in all, though, our booking volumes are still well below the levels they were at in pre-pandemic times; and we regretfully still see no signs of any broader structural recovery of the air transport sector.”
