American Airlines Orders 47 More 787 Dreamliners

American Airlines today announced it would more than double its 787 Dreamliner fleet with a new order for 47 of the jet from Boeing after negotiating a massive discount that amounts to almost a third off list prices.

The new order will make American Airlines the largest 787 customers in the Western Hemisphere, as the carrier had initially ordered 42 787 Dreamliners. The new order is made up of 22 787-8s and 25 787-9s – with the aim to both modernise and expand its fleet.

"We are extremely honoured that American Airlines, is deepening its commitment to the 787 Dreamliner. This new order is a powerful endorsement of the 787 family's unique passenger appeal and unmatched ability to help airlines open new routes and grow profitably," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Kevin McAllister.

The huge discount on each aircraft American is getting follows on from a long relationship the airline has with the aircraft manufacturer that dates back as far as 1936. American was the first to fly Douglas DC-3's in commercial service.  In January 1959 American started to operate the impressive quad jet the  707, just over two years later they started flying the 720B's. The first DC-10 delivery went to American in 71' and in another first, they carried ou the first revenue flight of a 787 during May2015.
