Emirates to restart flights to Newcastle in October as it quickly scales up UK operations

The Dubai based Emirates has confirmed it will restart flights to Newcastle Airport (NCL) from 15 October, following the easing of international entry rules and an upsurge in passenger demand.

The carrier said it will resume services to its North-eastern UK hub with four weekly flights, all operated by Boeing 777 aircraft, across two classes. The first flight, EK033, will depart Dubai International (DXB) at 1430 and arrive in Newcastle (NCL) at 1910, while flight EK034 will depart Newcastle at 2110 and arrive in Dubai the following day at 0725. All times are local, and flights will operate on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Emirates has also announced plans scale up its operations to and from London Heathrow (LHR) in a phased manner that will see it offering a six times daily operation - with five A380 services - from the airport by the 31 October. Emirates’ EK005/006 service to Heathrow will be upgraded from a B777 to the A380 from 15 October and an additional B777 service to Heathrow (EK031/EK032) will be added from the same date. Flight EK031/EK032 will then be upgraded to the A380 from 31st October.

Emirates’ commitment to the UK

By the end of October, the airline will offer 77 weekly flights to the UK, including the six times daily London Heathrow operation; double daily A380 flights to Manchester, a ten weekly service to Birmingham, a daily service to Glasgow, and a four weekly service to Newcastle. The increase in operations will make it easier for UK customers to access Emirates’ growing global network of 120 destinations - close to 90% of Emirates’ pre-pandemic network.

Responding to increasing customer demand across Europe, Emirates has also brought forward its plans to introduce extra flights and capacity to other key cities, including Barcelona, Brussels, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Lisbon, Madrid, Munich, Rome, and Zurich.

Richard Jewsbury, Divisional Vice President UK at Emirates commented, “We’re incredibly pleased to resume Emirates flights to and from Newcastle, helping reconnect communities and businesses in the North East with Emirates’ extensive global network. Since the UAE moved to the UK’s ‘amber list’ we’ve seen huge demand from passengers eagerly making travel plans - whether it’s to see family and friends, for education, business, or a long-awaited holiday. We look forward to welcoming passengers back onboard an Emirates flight soon.”

Nick Jones, Chief Executive of Newcastle Airport said, “We are delighted that Emirates has brought forward its return to Newcastle International Airport and the North East with four weekly flights throughout the winter starting from the 15th October.  A change of flight times to an evening departure will mean passengers can maximise their stay in Dubai whether on holiday or business whilst also ensuring connectivity to worldwide destinations via the Emirates network.”

Since it safely resumed tourism activity in July, Dubai remains one of the world's most popular holiday destinations, especially during the winter season. The city is open for international business and leisure visitors. From sun-soaked beaches and heritage activities to world class hospitality and leisure facilities, Dubai offers a variety of world-class experiences. It was one of the world's first cities to obtain Safe Travels stamp from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) – which endorses Dubai's comprehensive and effective measures to ensure guest health and safety.

New lounge designed by Jouin Manku in terminal 2F at Paris-Charles de Gaulle for Air France

On 19 August 2021, Air France unveiled its brand new iconic lounge located in terminal 2F at Paris-Charles de Gaulle. An invitation to celebrate the best of French-style travel, upon arrival at the airport or during transit.

Dedicated to Business customers and Flying Blue Elite Plus members travelling on Air France's short- and medium-haul Schengen network, this lounge is one of the airline's largest, with a surface area of 3,000 sq. m. and 570 seats spread over two levels.

In collaboration with teams from Air France and the Group ADP, the entire space and most of the furniture were designed by the Jouin Manku agency, founded by Canadian architect Sanjit Manku and French designer Patrick Jouin. The idea of levitation and grace guided the creative duo, to offer the airline's customers a real moment suspended in time and enjoy total relaxation before they board.

Following Charlotte Perriand, Andrée Putman and more recently Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance and Mathieu Lehanneur, Air France's choice to associate itself with this prestigious designer once again illustrates its tradition of working with the best architects and designers of its time, to continue telling its legendary story.

A haven of peace and serenity at the heart of the airport, the lounge, with its curved features and relaxing vibe, is open, airy and uncomplicated at first glance. There is something for everyone, depending on the amount of time customers have before boarding, to rest, freshen up, work or enjoy something to eat and drink.

Qantas Group to require all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Photo Getty
The Qantas Group will require all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as part of the national carrier’s commitment to safety.

Frontline employees – including cabin crew, pilots and airport workers – will need to be fully vaccinated by 15 November 2021 and the remainder of employees by 31 March 2022. There will be exemptions for those who are unable for documented medical reasons to be vaccinated, which is expected to be very rare.

The policy follows consultation with Qantas and Jetstar employees including a survey sent to 22,000 people to seek their views on vaccination. The 12,000 responses received makes it one of the biggest single surveys on this topic in Australia. The results showed that of those who responded:

89 per cent had already been vaccinated or are planning to be.
4 per cent were unwilling or unable to get the jab.
Around three-quarters think it should be a requirement for all employees to be vaccinated and would be concerned if other employees in the workplace weren’t vaccinated.
Thousands of aviation workers supporting international flights in New South Wales, South Australia and New Zealand are already required to be vaccinated by those jurisdictions. Multiple airlines around the world have also made it a requirement.

Announcing the policy, Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said: “Having a fully vaccinated workforce will safeguard our people against the virus but also protect our customers and the communities we fly to.

American commercial aircraft to be used in Afghanistan evacuation effort

Officials at the U.S. Department of Defense in the United States have confirmed on Sunday that Stage 1 of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) had been activated and some 18 or so commercial aircraft would be used to help in the evacuation operation in Afghanistan.

According to the reports, the commercial aircraft from a number of carriers, including Delta and American would not be used to fly into Kabul itself but would be used to transport passengers who have already flown out of Afghanistan.

Stage 1 will see four aircraft from United Airlines, three each from American Airlines, Atlas Air, Delta Air Lines, Omni Air and two from Hawaiian Airlines deployed to the region an aid the evacuation movement.

American Airlines confirmed on Sunday that it would deploy three widebody aircraft to military bases and other secure transit points on the Arabian Peninsula and in Europe to assist with the transportation of U.S. citizens and refugees coming from Kabul, Afghanistan.

In a statement, the carrier said "American is part of the CRAF program and is proud to fulfil its duty to help the U.S. military scale this humanitarian and diplomatic rescue mission. The images from Afghanistan are heartbreaking. The airline is proud and grateful of our pilots and flight attendants, who will be operating these trips to be a part of this life-saving effort."

United said it would send four Boeing 777 aircraft to "operate flights to bring our troops, American civilians and Afghan citizens who have risked their lives to help keep them safe, to the U.S"

Atlas Air issued the following statement on Sunday, "We will be flying passenger aircraft to carry the evacuees safely to the U.S. and will be standing by should additional capacity be needed.

As the largest supplier of airlift to the U.S. military, we are proud to provide this essential passenger service in the region at this critical time."

Delta said it had been in touch with the Department of Defense for some times prior to the invocation of the CRAF and was already arranging multiple relief flights.  It confirmed the airline will operate using available spare aircraft on this new operation.

“For decades, Delta has actively played a role in supporting the US Military and our troops,” said John Laughter, Delta EVP and Chief of Operations. “And we are again proud to pledge Delta people and our aircraft in support our country’s relief efforts.”

This is the third CRAF activation in the history of the program. The first occurred in support of Operations Desert Shield/Storm (Aug. 1990 to May 1991), and the second was for Operation Iraqi Freedom (Feb. 2002 to June 2003).

From one DC-3 to a fleet of over 800 aircraft, Delta celebrates 75 years of leading the cargo industry

Launched domestic cargo service in August 1946, expanding internationally in 1953
Supporting global communities with humanitarian aid delivery
Seventy-five years ago, Delta made its official but humble entry into the cargo business: 200 pounds of freshly picked mushrooms loaded aboard a DC-3 destined for Atlanta, making farm-to-table a possibility decades before it became a culinary hashtag.

That first week of operation in 1946, the airline carried a little bit of everything to customers across the U.S.: a 64-year-old, $1,500 soup tureen; 1,100 pounds of auto parts filling six crates; 450 pounds of candy; a box of silver coins. Delta planes had served the Allied cause during World War II, transporting everything from food and surgical supplies to weapons and auto parts overseas. That helped give Delta what was needed to turn cargo transport into a full-fledged business.

  • In the decades since, the cargo team has marked a number of milestones, including:
  • 1950-1953: Delta volunteers to ship blood donated through the American Red Cross to United Nations forces during the Korean War.
  • 1953: The international cargo service launches, with flights to the Caribbean and Venezuela.
  • 1954: Disaster relief efforts for the Haitian community after Hurricane Hazel.
  • 1958: Frank Taylor becomes Delta’s first air freight passenger, flying with a shipment of roses from Philadelphia to Atlanta.
  • 1959: “King” becomes the first dog to fly on a commercial jet from Houston to New York City.
  • 1966: A Delta L-100 cargo plane carries NASA’s Surveyor 3 spacecraft from Los Angeles to Cape Kennedy, Florida, launching site—the first time a spacecraft was carried by regular commercial aircraft.
  • 1970: The launch of DASH, which has become Delta’s most popular cargo product.
  • 1986: Delta makes history in 1986 when U.S.-manufactured cars begin shipping to Germany via a U.S. air carrier. Two Corvettes were shipped on a L-1011-500 flight from Dallas to Frankfurt, with two Firebirds on a following flight.
  • 1998: Delta launches the first international cargo alliance with Swissair, before becoming a founding member of SkyTeam Cargo in 2000.
  • 2017: Delta opens its first Cargo Control Center to improve customer experience.
  • 2017: Launch DASH Critical, with distinctive pink packaging, marking priority shipments.

Jet Edge International Is Adding 27 New Aircraft to Its AdvantEdge Fleet

After a record-setting first half of 2021, Jet Edge is excited to announce the addition of 27 state-of-the-art aircraft to its AdvantEdge fleet. The Bombardier Challenger 300/350 (16) and Gulfstream G450 (11) aircraft will all be flying by the end of the year, bringing the total available aircraft for charter in the AdvantEdge fleet to 74 (38 Challengers and 36 Gulfstreams). The new additions will have an average age of less than 10 years old and will include new paint, interiors, and upgraded state-of-the-art cabin technology systems. The cabins will include Gogo 4G streaming Wi-Fi, Bluetooth controlled sound systems, updated USB charging ports, HD Airshow, in-flight entertainment options, and more. The new deliveries started in earnest in July of this year and will be delivered in their entirety by December 15th.

At a time when the industry is experiencing historically high demand and record low inventory, Jet Edge is thrilled to provide customers with these highly sought after, industry-leading aircraft types.

“Mid 2020, our senior teams saw availability as a gating item post-vaccine roll out and knew we had to get ahead of the curve via our new AdvantEdge program, which sold out within 90 days of announcing the new product,” comments Jet Edge International CEO Bill Papariella. “As many private jet travellers face waitlists, halted fractional sales, and phased out aircraft product offerings, Jet Edge is providing access to these state-of-the-art Challenger and Gulfstream models before year-end.”

On the heels on of its recent KKR transaction, Jet Edge is squarely focused on positioning the company to take advantage of unprecedented marketplace conditions with its revolutionary AdvantEdge simplified ownership model and Reserve charter product, which provides extraordinary access to the fleet.

“The AdvantEdge and Charter Reserve program response has been a game-changer for our company and our clients. We have not only strengthened our position in the market, but solidified relationships with our OEM partners along the way to ensure best in class operations,” Jet Edge International CEO Bill Papariella continues. “This isn’t just about high demand and adding planes to the fleet. These fleet additions truly drive value across our platform for all stakeholders in a meaningful way.”
