KLM's first Embraer E195-E2 lands at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport

The first Embraer 195-E2 from Brazil arrived at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
this afternoon. The new aircraft type is both quieter and more economical than its predecessor the Embraer 190. The 195-E2 uses 9% less fuel per flight and therefore emits 31% less CO2 per passenger in comparison with the E-190. This new type is also 63% quieter than the Embraer 190. Fleet renewal forms an important part of KLM’s approach towards making its operations more sustainable. Seven new aircraft of this type will be joining the KLM Cityhopper fleet this year. KLM has ordered a total of 25.

The latest addition to the fleet will be taken into operation on 1 March for destinations within the European network. The aircraft can carry 132 passengers, making it the biggest in the KLM Cityhopper fleet, which now consists of 32 Embraer 190s and 17 Embraer 175s. In addition to remarkably little noise in the cabin, passengers get to enjoy the special mood lighting, ergonomically designed seats, extra legroom, USB connections and bigger baggage bins.

Delta Air Lines and LATAM joint venture gets final approval

More and improved travel options, shorter connection times and new routes between North America and Brazil will be just some of the benefits for customers.
The Joint Venture agreement has also been authorized in Uruguay while the application process continues in the U.S., Chile and other jurisdictions.

Delta Air Lines and LATAM have received final approval, without conditions, of their commercial agreement (“trans-American Joint Venture agreement” or “JVA”) by the Brazilian competition authority - the Administrative Council for Economic Defense - after initial approval was granted in September 2020. The JVA seeks to enhance the route networks served by both airlines, delivering a seamless travel experience between North and South America. The Delta-LATAM agreement has also been approved in Uruguay while the application process continues in other countries, including Chile.

“This final approval in Brazil furthers our mission to provide customers in this important market with the world-class travel experience and options they deserve,” said Delta CEO Ed Bastian. “Moving forward, we will continue working with LATAM to unlock more benefits for our customers and create the premier airline alliance of the Americas.”

Aeroflot's busy January......

This week the leading and largest Russian airline group, Aeroflot, released its operational results for January this year.

A total of 2.4 million passengers travelled on the group's flights during the first month of the year,  down 42.7% down year-on-year.  The majority of people were travelling on domestic flights -  2.1 million. The group’s passenger load factor was 77.2%, a 2.1 percentage point increase versus the same month last year. Pobeda Airlines carried 928 thousand passengers, a slight increase year-on-year.

Aeroflot's operating results of January 2021 were affected by the dynamics of demand and significant flight restrictions imposed amid the spread of the novel coronavirus infection.

In January 2021 Aeroflot Group continued to restore its domestic traffic volumes and partially restore international flights. In addition to flights to Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Maldives, Egypt, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, Japan and Serbia, based on regulatory approval flights to Helsinki (Finland) were added with limited frequency. In February flights to Baku (Azerbaijan), Yerevan (Armenia) and Delhi (India) have also recommenced, and the frequency of flights to a number of destinations was increased. However, in general, International traffic remained significantly limited.

Saab receives order from the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy for Digital Towers

Saab has signed a contract with the UK’s Royal Navy to provide a Digital Tower solution at Air Station Culdrose´s satellite airfield at Predannack.

Following a competitive procurement, the Royal Navy has become the fourth UK customer to select Saab’s Digital Towers as part of a framework contract. The technology, which enables air traffic services to be conducted remotely, will also enhance the controllers’ situational awareness, through video, automatic tracking, graphic overlays, and enhanced safety tools.

The Royal Navy follows London City Airport, Cranfield University and the Royal Air Force in adopting the leading edge technology that will be delivered within 2021.

“Saab’s leading air traffic management technologies have a beneficial role to play for both British civilian and military customers. The Royal Navy’s adoption of digital towers is an example of how the British Armed Forces embrace innovative solutions and Saab is delighted to support their forward looking vision,” said Magnus Lewis-Olsson, Chairman of Saab UK.

“This is an important step in the Royal Navy’s continued development and exploitation of remote system technology to enhance the way air traffic services are delivered, improving controller efficiency and providing a safe operating environment for air systems,” said Cdr Mick Gladwin, Royal Navy.

The digital air traffic control solution is a breakthrough in air traffic control and was introduced during 2015 in Sweden when Örnsköldsvik Airport became the first airport in the world with remote air traffic control. In the UK, Cranfield Airport is operating Saab´s system and London City will also operate the Saab solution starting later this year.

Bombardier suffers data hack.

Canadian firm Bombardier confirmed today it has suffered a major breach in its cybersecurity whereby the personal and other confidential data relating to employees, customers and suppliers was hacked.

The firm says an initial investigation found out an 'unauthorized party' had not only accessed but also extracted data by exploiting a vulnerability affecting a third-party file-transfer application, which was running on purpose-built servers isolated from the main Bombardier IT network.

Upon discovery of the hack, Bombardier sought the services of cybersecurity and forensic professionals who provided external confirmation that the company’s security controls were effective in limiting the scope and extent of the incident. Bombardier also notified appropriate authorities, including law enforcement and will continue to work with the authorities as the investigation continues.

Bombardier has been proactively contacting customers and other external stakeholders whose data was potentially compromised. The ongoing investigation indicates that the unauthorized access was limited solely to data stored on the specific servers.

Manufacturing and customer support operations have not been impacted or interrupted. Bombardier can also confirm the company was not specifically targeted—the vulnerability impacted multiple organizations using the application.

Bombardier will continue to assess the situation and stay in close contact with its clients, suppliers and employees, as well as other stakeholders.

The airline industry is burning through between $75 billion and $95 billion

The airline industry is burning through cash like never before,  a figure that's ballooned to as much as $95 billion.

The reasons why so much money is being spent during this time of a global pandemic are many, but include a poor start to 2021. It is fairly clear to most in the industry that the first half of this year isn't shaping up to be great. Indeed, many predictions are turning out to be rather over-optimistic and the true picture will not be quite so rosy.  Many, including The International Air Transport Association (IATA) say this is because of reimposed travel restrictions, more border closures and worries over the new emerging strains of the virus. Plus, future booking numbers are also down, which doesn't bode well for the rest of this year.

Another reason is that many airlines, travel arrangers and holiday companies have decided that, this year is going to be pretty much a write-off anyway and whilst they will continue with a small schedule for the bulk of this year,  they are putting so much more of their resources in a massive rebound for 2022

IATA predicts the airline industry will burn through $95 billion over the year,  slight reductions in cash burn each quarter until the end of the year.  It is a particularly pessimistic prediction,  assuming governments and officials will keep most of the current travel restrictions in place.

JetBlue Reaffirms its Investment in Crewmembers with Focus on Increasing Access, Equity and Diversity

JetBlue today announced plans to launch new internal career development programs that reaffirm its commitment to crewmembers and support its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) strategy. These new pathways focus on creating greater access to select career paths, fostering equity by removing barriers to entry and increasing representation in senior leadership.

JetBlue is launching two new development programs focused on three career trajectories: 1) a new pathway from frontline operational jobs to corporate services roles, and 2) opportunities for crewmembers to pursue careers as pilots or aircraft maintenance technicians.

The pathway from the operation to corporate services is designed to help nurture, develop and grow future leaders. This path will include hands-on experience including a mix of classroom learning and support, and two rotational job placements, based on business need, with job placement assistance upon completion of the program.

The pilot and aircraft maintenance technician gateway programs will alleviate some of the known barriers to entry for these careers such as financing and fears of leaving a permanent job, while adding some certainty and a defined pathway to the process.

“We created these initiatives because at JetBlue our crewmembers and culture are key to our success,” said Mike Elliott, chief people officer, JetBlue. “Our new initiatives will help remove some of the barriers candidates may face so we can better help talent continue to grow. Realizing we don’t all start from the same place, equity and accessibility are at the center of our new crewmember development efforts. These new programs will help us build a more diverse internal pipeline.”

These pathways join JetBlue’s other development programs like JetBlue Scholars, its employer-sponsored college degree program, and its Gateway Select pilot training initiative, which have proven valuable for crewmember growth.
