Coffee waste to solid biofuels for London Stansted Airport

London Stansted to become the first airport in the world to convert all its coffee waste to solid biofuels

London Stansted is set to become the first airport in the world to convert all its coffee grounds to solid biofuels after a successful trial with Cambridgeshire-based bio-bean, the world’s largest recycler of coffee grounds.

Passengers at London Stansted drink over six million cups of coffee a year as they pass through the terminal, creating over 150 tonnes of coffee waste. The partnership, which will begin on 21 October will see all 21 of the airport’s coffee shops, restaurants and bars segregate all spent coffee grounds before being transported to bio-bean’s hi-tech processing facility near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.

The grounds are then converted into Coffee Logs, each made from the grounds of around 25 cups of coffee and used in domestic wood burners and multi-fuel stoves as a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fuels. Recycling coffee grounds this way saves 80% on CO2e emissions than if they were sent to landfill and 70% than if they were sent to an anaerobic digestion facility and mixed with food waste, as currently happens.

Boeing pilots' messages on 737 MAX safety raise new questions

Reuters is reporting that a Boeing senior pilot has confirmed he might have unintentionally misled regulators, in a series of internal messages from 2016 that became public Friday!

The news has plunged Boeing into a fresh crisis as the cost of the 737 Max 8 ground climbs towards $9 billion.

Reporting by David Shepardson; Additional reporting by Tracy Rucinski in Chicago and Eric M. Johnson in Seattle; Editing by Richard Chang and Daniel Wallis

The messages, first reported by Reuters, sent Boeing shares tumbling, prompted a demand by U.S. regulators for an immediate explanation, and a new call-in Congress for Boeing to shake up its management as it continues to grapple with the fallout from two fatal crashes that have grounded its fastest-selling plane.

In a transcript of instant messages between two employees, the 737 MAX’s then-chief technical pilot, Mark Forkner, said the so-called MCAS anti-stall system in the aeroplane was “running rampant” in a flight simulator session. The system has been tied to the crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia that together killed 346 people.

The messages, which sources provided to Reuters, appear to be the first publicly known observations that MCAS behaved erratically during testing before the aircraft entered service.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered Boeing Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg to give an “immediate” explanation for the delay in turning over the “concerning” document which Boeing discovered some months ago.

KLM creates inflight magazine for children on KLM flights

In honour of KLM’s 100th anniversary, the carrier teamed up with Hearst Create and the popular science magazine Quest, to create the Holland Herald Junior magazine.

The inflight magazine for children will be dished out to all passengers aged 8 to 14 on KLM flights, starting from the autumn break.

Commissioned by KLM, the Holland Herald editorial team engaged Quest for its expertise in creating the junior edition. Use has been made of Quest Junior content, while the design and English translation of the magazine were taken care of by Hearst Create. Amongst other things, the Holland Herald Junior contains a report about flamingo Bob on Curacao, the most interesting facts and must-knows about a KLM plane, a robot quiz and an interview with a real pilot.

KLM’s Global Marketing Communication & Media Manager Daphne Hoogenboom says that creating the Holland Herald Junior has been one of the many exceptional ways in which KLM has celebrated its 100th anniversary: “For our 100th anniversary, we wanted to shine a light on our young passengers too. Combining the nicest Quest Junior content with fascinating must-knows and informative articles about KLM have made the mag a great success. The initial responses from children on board are incredibly enthusiastic!”

Asia remains the largest tourism growth market

Asia remains the largest tourism growth market

Asian outbound travel grows by six per cent – International trips within Asia a significant growth driver – City breaks report the highest growth – ITB to present the latest findings of the IPK World Travel Monitor exclusively at ITB Asia 2019.

Trips abroad from Asia are continuing to increase. After surging by seven per cent in 2018, during the first eight months of 2019 they rose by a further six per cent. This is in part due to international trips within Asia, which are a significant growth driver. Despite an anticipated decline in year-on-year growth, the prospects for 2020 remain good. These are the findings of the first trend analysis of the World Travel Monitor®, to be presented by IPK International at this year’s ITB Asia (16 - 18 October) in Singapore. The report was commissioned by ITB Berlin. The World Travel Monitor® is based on the results of representative interviews with more than 500,000 people in over 60 global travel markets. It has been compiled for more than 20 years and is recognised as the most widescale continuous survey of global travel trends.

Growth in Asia’s outbound travel market exceeds the global average

According to the World Travel Monitor®, between January and August, 2019 outbound travel from Asia rose by six per cent, once again making Asia the biggest growth driver in the international tourism market. ”Growth in Asia’s foreign travel market continues to exceed the global average, which during the first eight months of the year was only four per cent“, said Julia Mühlberger, marketing consultant, IPK International, at ITB Asia 2019.

Air France Questions in the Sky wins another award.....

At ‘Stratégies’ magazine’s 2019 Brand Content Awards, Air France won the Bronze Award for its “Questions in the Sky” event. This award is in addition to the Gold Award, received at the Grand Prix Stratégies de l’Expérience Client, in the “Omnichannel Customer Experience Strategy” category.

In order to promote both its image and its kids’ offer, Air France came up with the idea of answering children’s questions about air travel. And with 1.7 million young travellers every year, the questions were easy to find! Why is there a little hole in the window? Do air hostesses have a hiding place in the plane? How many times does a pilot fly around the world? Why doesn’t the plane flap its wings to fly? The company came up with “Questions in the Sky”, a fun experience on a dedicated website to answer all these questions and more, that generated 234,000 clicks. A launch film, events on social networks and a life-size cockpit model at Paris-Charles de Charles de Gaulle supported the campaign, produced in collaboration with BETC.

American Airlines Celebrates 30 Years of Leadership in Miami

This month, American Airlines celebrates the 30th anniversary of its bold move to establish a hub at Miami International Airport (MIA).

In October 1989, American operated just 19 flights a day to six cities from MIA. Today, Miami’s hometown carrier operates more than 350 flights a day to nearly 130 destinations from the hub — American’s largest international gateway— including service to more than 70 cities across Latin America and the Caribbean. American’s Cargo operation has also grown substantially. In 1989, American moved 39.5 million pounds of mail and freight. Today, it moves nearly 380 million pounds annually.

“We have experienced unprecedented growth in Miami over the last three decades, and our commitment to the community is stronger than ever,” said Juan Carlos Liscano, American Airlines Vice President in Miami. “All of us at American Airlines are proud of our title as Miami’s leading airline. Along with our customers and business partners, we will continue to build upon the last 30 years of growth with a strong focus on further expansion into Latin America.”

The Most Service to Latin America

No other carrier at MIA offers as much service to Latin America as American. Last month, American announced increased service between MIA and:
Santiago, Chile (SCL)
Lima, Peru (LIM)
São Paulo, Brazil (GRU)
Earlier this year, the airline added new service to Cordoba, Argentina (COR), and Santiago de Cuba, Cuba (SCU) — destinations that can only be reached from the U.S. on American.
A $21 Billion Economic Impact

American is a critically important economic engine for Miami and South Florida. What started out as a small hub in 1989 with fewer than 300 employees has grown to be the third-largest private employer in Miami-Dade County with more than 13,500 team members and an annual payroll exceeding $1.8 billion.

American’s economic impact also goes far beyond the team members that care for our customers. More than 162,000 additional jobs are created through businesses that support our MIA operations, meaning that American’s Miami hub contributes more than $21 billion annually to South Florida’s economy.

“American Airlines has a significant economic impact on our county,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “Its Miami hub helps drive South Florida's economy, and its robust schedule is critical to our community’s economic development. We value American’s commitment to this community and know that its growth in the coming years will continue to stimulate our local economy.”
Investment in Miami and South Florida

American’s commitment to MIA doesn’t stop with its network and team members. The airline has invested heavily in the community over the last three decades and supported dozens of organizations, including the United Way, Camillus House, Autism Speaks, Feeding South Florida and the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Foundation. In 2018, American’s corps of caring team member volunteers, the DoCrew, dedicated more than 30,000 hours of their time to these and other nonprofit organizations.

American is also committed to promoting Miami as a great place to live, work and play. The carrier partners with the Beacon Council, Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau and Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, amongst other civic organizations, to ensure the continued growth of both the city of Miami and the hub. American’s success in South Florida has helped grow the city’s reputation as a premier destination for travellers around the world.

“Greater Miami is a global gateway and welcomes a high volume of international visitors daily,” said William D. Talbert, III, CDME, President and CEO of Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Today, the GMCVB celebrates American Airlines Miami hub 30 year anniversary alongside our partners in travel. With the majority of Greater Miami’s visitors arriving via air, American Airlines infrastructure investment in our community serves as a foundational platform to the local tourism industry’s vitality.”

Help for Neighboring Communities
American has also been committed to providing disaster relief for neighbouring communities after a number of hurricanes impacted the region over the past few years. After hurricanes Irma and Maria wreaked havoc across the Caribbean islands in 2017, MIA team members immediately stepped up to help people impacted by the storms. American transported 460,000 pounds of relief supplies to Puerto Rico, including food, water, cots, tarps and generators, in wake of the storm. In total, the number of cargo and relief items delivered to the Caribbean totalled more than 3 million pounds.

Most recently, the MIA team helped colleagues in the Bahamas who were impacted by Hurricane Dorian. American’s Miami hub raised more than $55,000 for team members who lost nearly everything in the storm. The team also shipped more than 14,000 pounds of relief supplies within days of the hurricane.

“At American, we know that what’s good for Miami-Dade is good for American,” said Liscano. “Our commitment to Miami remains as strong as ever. We will continue to be the airline of choice for our customers, the premier gateway to Latin America and a loyal member of the South Florida community.”
