Next Earth partners with Iomob and Vueling Airlines to expand its Metaverse with first-ever transportation layer

Next Earth, the unicorn, sustainability-focused Metaverse today announced a partnership with Iomob, the pioneering blockchain company developing a decentralized protocol for the world's first Mobility Marketplace Network and token. The partnership is through Limitless, the Metaverse integrator and go-to full stack solution for established brands and startups, and will pair Iomob and Next Earth seamlessly.

The strategic alliance, which also includes Vueling Airlines, will collaborate in the development of tools and services enabling "Next Earthians" to plan real-Earth journeys, track carbon emissions and book "carbon positive" transportation via the Metaverse and Iomob's companion app.

"Next Earth and Iomob are simply the perfect match and use case," says Gabor Retfalvi, CEO of Next Earth. "Developing methods to visualize and experience sustainable travel within Next Earth fundamentally aligns with the natural evolution that underpins our environment and represents a wonderful next step for our company."

Next Earth's partnership with Iomob and Vueling Airlines – the first airline to enable bookings through the Metaverse – melds several unique entities with the potential to significantly impact environmental challenges. Iomob is a "real world" transportation company that helps users plan A-to-B journeys while allowing them to schedule numerous services like taxis, scooters and more. Vueling Airlines will enable real flight bookings in Next Earth, accessible via QR codes through an accompanying mobile app.

"We are working alongside Next Earth to create the transportation infrastructure that enables a more exciting and purposeful way to traverse the planet," said Boyd Cohen, CEO of Iomob. "Airlines are actively strategizing ways to be present in the Metaverse, so extending our relationship with Vueling Airlines to augment their Web3 bookings is a fantastic initiative for everyone."

Next Earth is becoming the center of the Metaversal Industrial Revolution with its unique, 1-to-1 recreation of the Earth. Iomob, meanwhile, announced investments from True Global Ventures, A100x and Creas. With Vueling Airlines, this new venture makes intermodal mobility more accessible by tapping into 7,000 taxi fleets, micro-mobility in 270+ cities, thousands of parking spaces and 480+ public transit feeds.

"Visualizing real-world journeys and using a Metaverse interface to select and book the least polluting trip, has never been done before," said Jesus Monzo, Distribution Strategy and Alliances Manager of Vueling.

Vueling doubles its presence at London Gatwick Airport adding five new routes to Spain and deploying two new Airbus A320Neo

At a briefing at the Spanish Tourist Office in London, Pedro Medina, deputy director of the Spanish Tourist Office (UK) together with Carolyn Prowse, Vueling’s chief commercial, strategy, network and customer officer, highlighted their confidence in the return of British tourism to Spain and celebrated Vueling’s five new routes to Spain from London Gatwick, starting operations between 01 and 03 April 2022.

Pedro Medina outlined the impact of COVID-19 on Spain’s tourism industry showcasing statistics from 2019 onwards. In 2020, international arrivals to Spain dropped by just over 77% compared to the previous year, whilst the tourism expenditure in the same period dropped by 78%. In 2021, Spain registered just under 32 million international arrivals, representing around 37% of the 2019 numbers.

Despite this, Medina emphasised how Spain’s strategy is not based around arrival statistics:  “Yes in 2019, Spain registered over 83.5 million international arrivals which is huge, however, our focus is not to recover these numbers. We are looking at a more long-term tourism strategy that encourages social, environmental, and economic sustainability.  In the short-term, we are focusing on bringing back quality tourism and rebuilding traveller confidence, whilst in the mid to long term, we will be identifying and targeting key consumer groups which are aligned to our sustainability objectives.”

Medina also showcased early tourism indicators for 2022 with summer air capacity 3.47% below 2019 levels and a growing average length of stay (11.4 nights for UK visitors in January 2022 vs a 2021 average of 8.73 nights).

Vueling, which forms part of IAG, has been the leader in the Spanish domestic market since 2012 and today operates 100 routes with departures and arrivals in Spain. In April 2022, the airline significantly increases its operations from London Gatwick to Spain with five new routes and deploys two of its most efficient aircraft, the A320Neo, to London Gatwick as part of its commitment to the United Kingdom and its ambitious international growth plan.  To celebrate these new routes, Vueling has launched a promotional campaign with routes now available to book from just 1 euro, before taxes to/from London.

Carolyn Prowse said:   “We are thrilled to celebrate the development of our international network from London Gatwick.  The United Kingdom represents Vueling’s strongest international market growth for 2022. We have doubled our presence at Gatwick airport compared to 2019 by adding new routes to Spain and deploying two new aircraft from April. This commitment from London Gatwick is in addition to our expanded operations from Paris Orly. Together, these two initiatives showcase how Vueling aims to help boost international markets this summer".

Vueling’s summer season programme

Vueling’s 2022 summer programme includes five new routes from London Gatwick to the Spanish destinations of Seville, Granada, Malaga, Almeria and Menorca and a total of 25 direct routes from the United Kingdom to Spain, France and Italy.

Vueling will serve existing direct routes from London Gatwick to Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia, Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña, Asturias, Paris-Orly, Rome and Florence. Florence, Paris-Orly, Granada and La Coruña are routes only served by Vueling from Gatwick.

The carrier which operates from a further six UK airports will continue to operate direct flights from previous seasons such as Cardiff to Malaga, Alicante and Palma de Mallorca, and Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh to Barcelona; the airline's main operations hub.

Commercial revenues of €1,306 million  for IAG Cargo during 2020

Photo British Airways
The cargo division of the International Airlines Group,  IAG Cargo has released details of its 2020 performance today and reported positive commercial revenues of €1,306 million over the whole of last year.

IAG is one of the world's largest airline groups with 533 aircraft as of 31st December 2020. It is the third-largest group in Europe and the sixth-largest in the world, based on revenue.

Overall yields for IAG Cargo for 2020 were up 94.6 per cent on the same time last year at constant currency. Sold tonnes were down 34.9 per cent.

Lynne Embleton, CEO at IAG Cargo, said:  "In 2020, the IAG Cargo team delivered exceptional results amid a  challenging economic and capacity environment.

Our top priority was to maintain a broad network and product proposition for cargo customers despite the pandemic. Without a freighter fleet, we adapted our operations and quickly established a comprehensive network of scheduled cargo-only flying using the group’s passenger aircraft. We identified markets most in need of air cargo supply, where the demand could support the yields required to cover the costs of cargo-only-services.
