Spirit to move more than 240 jobs out of Florida to Tennessee

The US budget carrier Spirit is moving its Operational Control Centre out of Miramar Florida to a nearly 49,000-square-foot facility in Williamson County, Tennessee.

The airline says the move will bolster network resiliency and reduce hurricane and tropical storm risk by shifting the 240 or so jobs out of Florida and nothing to do with costs.  The airline says the transition is scheduled to be completed by early 2021, and Spirit also plans to add nearly 100 more positions at the OCC over the next five years.

The OCC controls round-the-clock flight operations for more than 650 flights each day across the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean. Team Members are responsible for flight dispatch, crew scheduling, maintenance control, aircraft routing, air traffic control coordination, Guest solutions and more. Spirit’s operations team is instrumental in the airline’s commitment to invest in the Guest experience and deliver the Best Value in the Sky. Spirit secured industry acclaim as the country's most on-time Low Cost Airline by Flight Global, as well as international recognition as the Low Cost Airline of the Year at the CAPA World Aviation Summit and Air Transport World'sValue Airline of the Year. Spirit’s OCC team efforts have helped the airline achieve among the best on-time performance for the past two years.

One of America’s fastest-growing airlines is expanding behind the scenes to support its growing operation and set the stage for future expansion. Spirit Becomes Fort Lauderdale’s Largest International Airline

 Trips in and out of Florida will be easier than ever this spring! The ultra-low-cost US carrier Spirit Airlines is scheduling additional flights every day from some of Central and South Florida’s most popular destinations, the airline announced Tuesday. The expanded options deliver on Spirit’s longstanding promise to invest in the Guest by offering more convenience and flexibility.

In all, Florida’s Hometown Airline plans to inaugurate or upgrade the frequency of flights on 16 routes from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Orlando International Airport (MCO). The changes will begin April 1, 2020 and continue rolling out through July.

Spirit Airlines, has reported fourth quarter and full year 2019 financial results.

The Ultra-low-cost carrier Spirit has reported its fourth-quarter and full-year 2019 financial results this week which demonstrated the airlines continued improvement, with operational revenue up by 12.4% and taking delivery of 9 new Airbus aircraft to amass a fleet of some 145 aircraft.

Spirit was once again fourth-placed for on-time performance among reporting U.S. carriers and also recently received several global recognitions:  Low-Cost Airline of the Year at the CAPA World Aviation Summit; Value Airline of the Year by Air Transport World; and, most on-time Low Cost Airline by Flight Global.  

Our team also delivered strong financial results for 2019.  For the full year 2019, our GAAP pre-tax earnings increased 112.9 percent year over year.  Excluding special items, our Adjusted pre-tax earnings increased 15.3 percent year over year1,” said Ted Christie, Spirit’s President and Chief Executive Officer.  "I am very proud of the Spirit team for these accomplishments.  Looking ahead to 2020, we are focused on running a safe and reliable airline, leveraging technology and automation to drive further efficiencies, and executing on our revenue initiatives to deliver strong returns for our shareholders.”

Spirit Airlines Takes Cleveland to Cancun, Celebrates Five Years at CLE with More Go to Key Cities

Great news for people procrastinating on their Valentine’s Day plans! Spirit Airlines is coming to the rescue with nonstop service between Cleveland and Cancun—departing Feb. 14, 2020. Plus, more love meets More Go this spring when Spirit adds even more flights on Cleveland’s key domestic routes.

Spirit’s decision to send more of the brightest planes in the sky to the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) is an anniversary gift of sorts. The airport started with three nonstop destinations in 2015. Five years later—by the middle of 2020—Spirit’s offering will have quadrupled with approximately 14 daily departures to 12 cities stretching coast to coast, and now into Mexico.

Flights to Orlando International Airport (MCO) will run three to four times a day depending on the day of the week.

Spirit Airlines launches the only Oakland-Fort Lauderdale nonstop service

The US Budget carrier Spirit Airlines  is launching a new service between Oakland (OAK) and   Fort Lauderdale (FLL) from 1st April, making Spirit the only airline flying OAK to FLL nonstop.

“Right now, our Guests on both coasts have limited options between the Bay Area and South Florida,” said John Kirby, Spirit Airline’s Vice President of Network Planning. “Offering the only nonstop connection between Oakland with Fort Lauderdale makes it easier for travellers on both ends, and it shows our Guests we’re tailoring our options to them as we keep growing our nationwide network.”

OAK is the Bay Area’s most centrally-located airport, making it the most convenient option for more than 3 million of the region’s 7.7 million residents.

“We are thrilled to welcome Fort Lauderdale to Oakland’s route map,” said Port of Oakland Director of Aviation, Bryant L. Francis. “This flight will make it more convenient than ever for our travellers to reach the sun and sand of South Florida. Plus, it gives them access to Spirit’s dozens of international destinations and the cruises departing from South Florida’s ports.”

Spirit started Oakland service in 2011 with a single flight to Las Vegas (LAS) and grew to third place among Oakland’s largest carriers. The new Fort Lauderdale flight joins existing service to Chicago (ORD), Detroit (DTW), Houston (IAH) and Los Angeles (LAX), along with what’s become four daily flights to Las Vegas.

Work starts on Spirit's new $250 million HQ in Florida.


 Spirit Airlines,  one of the fastest-growing airlines in the US  held a groundbreaking ceremony with Spirit Team Members, local and state officials, and business leaders on Thursday 9th January to celebrate the construction of its new corporate headquarters in Dania Beach, Fla. Spirit is investing up to $250 million for the creation of a corporate campus of up to 500,000 square feet of space, and the airline plans to add 225 additional jobs over the next five years.


In 2022, approximately 1,000 employees are planned to move from the company’s current facilities in Miramar to the new Dania Pointe site just minutes away from Spirit’s largest operating base, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). The development will include corporate offices, a new crew training facility with flight simulators, and a corporate training residence all designed for more streamlined workflow and quick access to the airport.

It took a while, however, the US budget carrier with the bright yellow aircraft, Spirit Airlines has finalized a special purchase agreement with European planemaker Airbus for 100 A320neo Family aircraft. 

It was back in October that the two parties had first signed and then announced a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the purchase of up to 100 of the aircraft. Since then tough negotiations have taken place and the low-cost-carrier has confirmed it is taking a mix of A319neo, A320neo, and A321neo from Airbus in order to meet the airline’s future fleet requirements.

“This new order represents another milestone for Spirit,” said Spirit Airlines’ President and CEO Ted Christie said at the time, “The additional aircraft will be used to support Spirit’s growth as we add new destinations and expand our network across the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean.”

Spirit to serve more Colombian cities from U.S. than any other airline

America’s fastest-growing airline is leap-frogging its competitors by offering Guests more choices than ever before between the U.S. and Colombia. Spirit Airlines announced it will add two new destinations to its network in 2020, with service to Bucaramanga (BGA) and Barranquilla (BAQ) starting in April.

Spirit flew its first flight to Colombia in May 2008, connecting Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Cartagena (CTG). The airline’s expansion continued over the next decade with flights to Bogota (BOG), Medellin (MDE), Armenia (AXM) and Cali (CLO). Separately, the airline established nonstop flights between Orlando (MCO) and Cartagena, Bogota and Medellin. The addition of Bucaramanga and Barranquilla to Fort Lauderdale’s lineup means Spirit serves more cities in Colombia nonstop from the U.S. than any other airline, with a total of 10 routes from two U.S. gateways to seven Colombian cities.

CAPA, part of the Aviation Week Network, is one of the world’s most trusted sources of market intelligence for the aviation and travel industry.

CAPA's Aviation Awards for Excellence are regarded as the pre-eminent awards for strategic excellence in aviation. The Low-Cost Airline of the Year Award goes to the “low cost or hybrid airline that has been the biggest standout strategically has established itself as a leader, has been the most innovative, and provided a benchmark for others to follow.”

pirit Airlines Grows in Tampa with New Service to New York, Newark, Indianapolis and Nashville

 Just in time for winter, Spirit Airlines  is bringing more destinations and more low fares to Tampa. Beginning today, Florida’s Hometown Airline will offer daily nonstop service from Tampa International Airport to New York’s LaGuardia Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport and Indianapolis International Airport. Last week, the airline also started service to Nashville International Airport. With the addition of these new destinations, Spirit will now serve 24 destinations from Tampa.

Spirit Airlines announces new $250 million global headquarters investment near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport


One of America's fastest-growing carriers, the low-cost Spirit Airlines has revealed details of its plan to build massive new headquarters in Dania Beach, Florida, which the firm says it will move into by mid-2022.


The airline with the bright yellow aircraft has been headquartered in South Florida for more than 20 years, has submitted site plans to the City of Dania Beach to build a massive campus of up to 500,000 square feet at Dania Pointe, a premier mixed-use development comprised of nearly one million square feet of retail space, restaurants and housing.

Spirit Airlines Adds New Nonstop Service to Cancun


Just in time for spring break, the US ultra-low-cost budget carrier, Spirit Airlines is giving passengers more ways to escape the cold for Mexico’s Riviera Maya. America’s fastest-growing airline will expand its nonstop service to Cancun from five new cities in the U.S., including Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Austin, Nashville and Philadelphia. These new flights will begin operating in February and March 2020, bringing new options to one of the world’s best leisure destinations. Spirit’s expansion in Cancun will make it the largest ultra-low-cost carrier at the airport with eight flights a day.

Spirit Airlines announces new routes to top holiday destinations from Nashville


Nashville’s newest airline is already expanding! The ultra-low-cost-carrier Spirit Airlines has started service to the Music City today with nonstop flights to Baltimore/Washington, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, New Orleans and Orlando, as well as Tampa beginning November 5, 2019. 

To celebrate its inaugural day at Nashville International Airport, Spirit is announcing even more service, including nonstop flights to Austin, Cancun, Newark and Los Angeles beginning early next year. The airline will also increase its flights to Orlando, giving the people of Nashville more options and lower fares to some of the best vacation destinations in the world.

The US low-cost carrier, Spirit Airlines is expanding its route from Austin with three new destinations and even more flights to America’s top leisure destinations!  

Beginning February 26, 2020, America’s fastest growing airline will offer nonstop service from Austin to Cancun, Mexico and will add additional flights to Orlando. Spirit will also start nonstop service to Nashville and Newark on March 26, 2020.

Spirit Airlines announces new appointments to its board of directors


                        Spirit Airlines announced this week that its Board of Directors had appointed Christine P. Richards and Mark B. Dunkerley as its newest members, effective September 23, 2019. The Board also announced it had been informed by Robert L. Fornaro of his decision to step down from the Board, also effective September 23, 2019.

“We are delighted that Chris and Mark have agreed to join our board,” said Spirit’s Chairman, Mac Gardner.  “With her strong background in aviation, corporate governance, customer support, government relations and business transactions, Chris will add an experienced voice in helping Spirit continue its trajectory as America’s largest and highest-quality value carrier.”

“We are also excited to bring on an aviation leader of Mark’s caliber,” Gardner continued.  “His experience as a successful CEO at Hawaiian and senior leader in several other airline and aviation businesses will be a tremendous resource for the Board and the Spirit management team.”

Spirit Airlines joins Honour Flight South Florida as 2020 official airline partner

The US ultra-low-cost carrier, Spirit Airlines is continuing its partnership with Honor Flight South Florida to serve as the organization’s official airline partner in 2020. In the next year, Spirit will once again operate four special Honor Flights from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to Baltimore-Washington International Airport for a memorable day in Washington, D.C. Approximately 340 veterans from the South Florida area will travel to visit the monuments built in their honour, all at no charge to the veterans.

Honor Flight South Florida helps transport our nation’s oldest veterans, who served in WWII, as well as the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam.  These heroes are given a chance to visit their memorials and feel the gratitude of their country. During the trips, the veterans meet members of Congress, veteran officials and take special trips to Arlington National Cemetery, WWII Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Marine Corps War Memorial.

Spirit Airlines Unveils New, Ergonomically-Designed Seats to Maximize Usable Legroom

Spirit Airlines is advancing its promise to invest in the Guest experience by unveiling new, more comfortable seats that provide additional usable legroom. Spirit’s new seats, created by UK-based Acro Aircraft Seating, integrate state-of-the-art design features, including thicker padding, ergonomically-designed lumbar support, and additional pre-recline. Middle seats will also gain another inch of width, and every seat will gain nearly an inch of pre-recline compared to Spirit’s current seating configuration, with exit rows adding even more.
