From 30 October, this schedule will be further upgraded with a third daily A380 service offering capacity to fly more than 1,500 passengers to Dubai every day.

The revised flight schedule will see Emirates reintroduce flight EK022 which will depart Manchester at 09:50hrs, arriving in Dubai at 20:00hrs local time. The return flight, EK021 will depart Dubai at 03:00hrs, arriving in Manchester at 07:45hrs local time. From 30 October, a slightly later flight schedule will operate*.

By October, Emirates will serve the UK with 110 weekly flights across seven UK hubs including Heathrow, Gatwick, London Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and Glasgow.

Richard Jewsbury, Divisional Vice President, Emirates UK, said: “As more international destinations have relaxed travel restrictions and opened up, demand has continued to rise, and we’re delighted to offer better connectivity to our customers with this schedule. Manchester is a vital hub for us in the UK and our operations from the airport connect both passengers and businesses in the North West with our ever-growing global network.”

Chris Woodroofe, Managing Director of Manchester Airport, said: “It is excellent to see Emirates reinstate its third daily frequency here at Manchester Airport. It’s a clear indication of the demand to fly from here to Dubai and beyond, and of the role we play in connecting the North to key global destinations.

“I am sure the additional flight will be hugely popular with the 22m people in our catchment area, and myself and the team look forward to working with Emirates as they continue to grow from Manchester Airport.”

The North is set for an economic boost as direct links to China are restored from Manchester Airport

Major boost for the North as flights to and from China restarts today from Manchester Airport

The service will operate weekly each Monday arriving at 10:00 and departing at 15:00

The route’s return is being praised by various organisations across the North including in Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Cumbria

The North is set for an economic boost as it was confirmed direct air links with China will be restored for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

Hainan Airlines has announced it will resume its Beijing-Manchester service from Monday 22nd August.

The airline started flights from the Northern hub in 2016, with the route going on to unlock hundreds of millions of pounds in trade, investment and tourism benefits.

The UK and Chinese governments last week agreed Manchester-China was one of the air corridors that could resume after a two-and-a-half year hiatus, and Hainan has moved quickly to start operating the popular service again, in time for the busy student season.

Hainan Airlines will use an A330 aircraft with both economy and business classes

The news has been hailed as a major boost to the North and UK’s levelling-up ambitions, with Manchester Airport becoming the only gateway outside of London with a direct service to mainland China.

Chris Woodroofe, Managing Director of Manchester Airport, said:  “Today’s announcement is clear evidence of the vital economic role that Manchester Airport plays, both in the North and the UK as a whole, as we emerge from the pandemic. Prior to 2020, the Hainan service provided vital connectivity to one of the world’s most important economies and I am sure this news will be welcomed by the hundreds of thousands of people across the North who travel to and from China each year.

It is extremely positive to see critical routes like this return to our departure boards and we look forward to working closely with Hainan Airlines to build on the previous success of this route.”

Pre-pandemic, there were around 100,000 people a year who travelled between Manchester and Beijing from the airport’s catchment area.

Economic impact studies showed the route led to a 38% increase in Chinese visitors to the North, with an average spend per visit increasing by 94%, and export values grew by 41%.

The return of the route will also be incredibly encouraging for the more than 40 universities across the airport’s catchment area that welcome thousands of Chinese students each year.

Due to policy in China, the outbound service to Beijing will initially stop in the Chinese city of Dalian, but the inbound service will be direct from Beijing.  From October the service will operate on a Tuesday.

Manchester Airport served 2.6m passengers last month

MAG reaches 85% of pre-Covid traffic in July

Passenger numbers continued to recover across Manchester Airports Group (MAG) in July, with its three airports handling 85% of pre-Covid passenger numbers, up from 82% in May and 84% in June.

Figures released today show that the Group – which owns Manchester, London Stansted, and East Midlands Airports – saw 5.5 million passengers travel through its terminals across the month, an increase on the 5.2 million in June.

London Stansted saw its passenger numbers reach 90% of 2019 levels, totalling 2.5 million. Manchester Airport’s strong recovery also continued, as 2.6 million passengers passed through the Northern hub, representing 82% of pre-pandemic traffic.

East Midlands Airport saw more than 400,000 passengers travel through its terminal in July as the summer holidays began.

Operational performance also continues to improve, with 93% of passengers at Manchester Airport clearing security in 30 minutes or less in July. More than two-thirds – 69% – passed through in 15 minutes or less.  This positive trend was maintained into the first week in August, with 99% of passengers clearing security in less than 30 minutes and 84% in less than 15 minutes.

Throughout its recovery, MAG has remained committed to ensuring its airlines can deliver their planned schedules. This has meant that, since March, the Group’s three airports have seen more than 17 million passengers and have had among the lowest cancellation rates of any large UK airports.

Manchester Airport hits out at media reports over Tui's battle for compensation.

Tui will not seek compensation from Manchester Airport
Reading recent newspaper reports in the UK, you might believe one of the leading holiday companies, Tui was currently engaging in legal action to get compensation from Manchester Airport for the mass disruption over recent months.

However, a statement from the airport operator indicates this isn't the case!  An airport spokesperson confirmed the holiday firm wasn't asking for compensation.   “The operational issues experienced by TUI at Manchester Airport in early June were the result of issues with TUI’s own operation, including the ground handling services that are contracted directly by the airline.

“As such, we welcome TUI’s confirmation that it will not seek compensation from Manchester Airport for the disruption its passengers experienced, contrary to some recent reports in the media.

“Manchester Airport has not enforced flight cancellations on any carrier, and we have been working closely with all our airlines to support them in operating their planned schedules.

Manchester Airport issues statement on Dispatches TV programme.

Manchester Airport has issued a strongly worded statement in response to Channel 4's Dispatches documentary programme - "Airport Chaos Undercover: Dispatches" with Jane Moore. The airport complained that the programme refused them a right to reply and was already outdated and was inaccurate.  A small number of complaints have already been raised against the show which has been removed from the channel's online streaming service all 4.

A Manchester Airport spokesperson said: “Following the recent episode of Dispatches on Channel 4, we want to reassure passengers due to travel through Manchester Airport this summer.

“The whole aviation industry has faced challenges in recovering from the pandemic, but we have worked hard since the start of the year to prepare for the peak summer season. For our part, we have recruited more than 600 new staff into our security operation and nearly 300 more are due to start work in the weeks ahead.

“This means we have not had to ask our airlines to cancel large numbers of flights, protecting the holidays of more than 3m people who will travel through Manchester Airport this summer. We are confident that, thanks to the progress we have made, the over-whelming majority will have a positive experience. As an example, in the last week, more than 95% of passengers got through security in under 30 minutes.

MAG served more than five million passengers in June

Manchester Airports Group (MAG) served more than five million passengers in a month for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, figures released for June show.

The 5.2 million passengers seen by the Group - which owns Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands Airports – represented 84% of traffic seen in June 2019.

London Stansted’s recovery continues to be strong, with the airport serving 88% of June 2019 levels, with traffic at East Midlands Airport up to 75% of pre-pandemic levels. Manchester Airport served 2.4 million passengers in June, close to 80% of pre-pandemic traffic.

In its Full Year results, published on 7th July, MAG recorded an overall £320m loss, serving 20.5 million passengers, equating to 33% of passengers served in 2019/20.

As the industry heads towards the peak summer season, MAG announced it has welcomed more than 1,500 new colleagues to roles across its three airports since its recruitment drive began in January.

MAG is working closely with its airlines to ensure they can operate their planned summer schedules and avoid mass cancellations. This means that more than 11 million people will get away through MAG’s airports over the peak summer season.

MAG CEO Charlie Cornish said: “As our annual results showed, it was another difficult year for our business while travel restrictions remained in place. However, as we reach milestones like we have seen in June, it is clear we have taken a step forward in our recovery.

“The significant number of new staff in our operation means that we can enter the peak of the summer season with greater confidence that our passengers will have an improved airport experience, as our business returns to full strength.”

Massive loss of £320 million for Manchester Airports Group.....

Manchester Airports Group has just released details from its full-year results for the period 1 April 2021 – 31 March 2022 which show toe company served 20.5m passengers in 2021/22, up 225% year-on-year.

The Group – which owns and operates Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands Airports also reported massive losses of  £320m for the year.

MAG is preparing for the aviation industry’s busiest period, as the peak summer season approaches. The Group expects passenger volumes over these months to increase to levels close to those seen in 2019, leading to a fuller recovery over the course of 2022/23.

MAG CEO Charlie Cornish said: “With travel restrictions in place for nearly all of the last 12 months, it was another uncertain and unpredictable year for MAG and the wider aviation industry.

“After tentative steps towards recovery last autumn, the emergence of the Omicron variant once again resulted in major barriers for people looking to travel internationally.

“MAG played an industry-leading role in highlighting the ineffectiveness of international travel testing, which helped pave the way for the removal of travel restrictions in spring this year.

“Free of those restrictions, we were confident that airlines and passengers would return quickly to our airports.

“The pace of that recovery has brought its own challenges, and recruitment has taken longer and been more difficult than we anticipated. We’ve now recruited more than 1,500 new staff across MAG since January so that we can give passengers the best possible experience this summer.

UK and Middle Eastern connections further bolstered as Gulf Air start direct route between Bahrain and Manchester Airport

The UK's links to the Middle East will get even stronger as direct flights launch between Bahrain and Manchester from Wednesday 1st June.

With two flights a week the route is a boost for businesses, tourism organisations, universities and those visiting friends and family.

Currently, 28,000 people from across Manchester Airport’s vast catchment area travel indirectly to Bahrain, these are a mix of those visiting family and friends and businesses that trade in the Middle East. A further 2,000,000 people from across the North travel to a range of Gulf Air’s onward destinations that are not currently served by Manchester Airport, so the route will also be beneficial to those wanting to access places like Bangkok, Mumbai and Delhi to name a few.

Ian Costigan, Interim Managing Director at Manchester Airport, said: “It’s great news that Gulf Air is starting direct flights from Manchester Airport, and I am sure it will be incredibly well received by the thousands of people in our catchment area that travel there indirectly each year.

The announcement of a third long-haul route coming to Manchester within the last month clearly shows the role we play in connecting the North to key global destinations. Not only do routes like these make travel easier, but they put the region on the international map for trade, economic and tourism opportunities, plus create a wealth of jobs in the process.

I look forward to welcoming the team from Gulf Air to the airport and wish them every success with the route.”

Gulf Air’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Captain Waleed AlAlawi said: “We are delighted to announce the launch of our Bahrain–Manchester direct route as part of the historic Bahraini–UK official and commercial relations. Manchester has been on our horizon for a while due to our customers’ demand; and as travel bounces back to normalcy, we knew it was the right time to launch it for our valued passengers. We are certain this new and exciting destination will further strengthen our network in the UK and Europe, and we look forward to serving our passengers to and from Manchester.”

Sheona Southern, Managing Director of Marketing Manchester, said: “We’re delighted to see this brand-new twice weekly flight from Bahrain to Manchester Airport being added to the route network. Routes old and new are rapidly returning at Manchester Airport, proving that the demand for international travel and tourism is back, and we look forward to offering a warm welcome to visitors from the GCC region who will be arriving with Gulf Air from 1 June.

Henri Murison, director of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership, said “This investment from Gulf Air is a huge vote of confidence is our region and cements Manchester Airport’s status as the gateway to the Northern Powerhouse. Better connectivity between the north and the Middle East is vital for bolstering trade, investment and tourism, delivering a huge economic boost and creating more jobs.”

Tim Newns, Chief Executive of MIDAS, Manchester’s Inward Investment Agency said “Providing a direct route between Greater Manchester and Bahrain presents an excellent opportunity for trade and developing strong partnerships. In the last five years we’ve seen a steady rise in interest from businesses in the GCC region and this increased connectivity will help us to enhance market opportunities and mutual knowledge exchange.”

The route will be served by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft with economy and business class cabins. Return economy flights start from £613 and business class from £3,159.

Gulf Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain, commenced operations in 1950, becoming one of the first commercial airlines established in the Middle East. Manchester Airports Group continues to see business recovery despite mass passenger disruption.

Manchester Airports Group (MAG) served 80% of its pre-pandemic passenger volumes for the first time in April, underlining the pace of its recovery.

Figures published by the Group - which owns and operates Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands Airports – saw 4.2 million passengers travel through its terminals across the month.

London Stansted continues to recover fastest of all major UK airports, welcoming more than two million passengers in the month, which included the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. That represented 85% of pre-pandemic traffic.

Manchester and East Midlands airports served 79% and 64% of April 2019 traffic respectively. Across the Group, in the space of three months (January to April) recovery in passenger numbers when compared to pre-pandemic levels has increased from 37% to 80%.

MAG CEO Charlie Cornish said: “Recovery across all three of our airports continues at pace, illustrating the huge pent-up demand for international travel we knew was in the market.

“We have worked positively with our airline partners to deliver a full flying schedule for our passengers, ensuring they get away on their trips as planned.  I am pleased with the significant progress we have made and continue to make with our recruitment efforts, which will equip our airports well for the summer.

In April, passenger numbers across the Group were 10% higher than in March, demonstrating the pace at which people are returning to travel. MAG, in partnership with its airlines, has continued its commitment to deliver a full flying schedule, so that travellers can go on their long-awaited trips without fear of last-minute cancellations.

Across the month, MAG has also made progress in its recruitment drive, with hundreds  new staff now deployed across the Group, with more expected to join over the coming weeks."

Manchester Airports Group launches apprenticeship programme to upskill staff in data skills

Manchester Airports Group (MAG) has launched a Data Literacy Apprenticeship to drive a digital-first culture throughout its business.

MAG, which operates Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands airports, has more than 100 employees from across the Group enrolled in the first cohort of the Programme.

This programme is a key part of MAG’s strategy to enhance on-the-job training and skills development for its employees, whilst also supporting the Group’s ambition to use digital tools to maximise the efficiency of the airport experience.

Working with training provider, Multiverse, MAG’s employees will enrol on to one of two available courses. The first, is a 13-month Data Literacy Programme which covers the core technical skills required to transform data into insights, as well as harnessing softer skills such as building narratives and presenting findings.

The second course is an Advanced Data Fellowship. This degree-level Programme empowers learners to develop their skills in data analysis and data science, helping to power digital transformation with the Group’s airports. Fellowship learners will build core capabilities in skills required to accelerate digital transformation at MAG, including skills around technical project management and predictive modelling.

Nick Woods, CIO at Manchester Airports Group, said:  “At MAG we are focused on using technology to empower every corner of our business, and the Data Literacy Programme is an important part of that commitment.  Working with Multiverse on this Programme will enhance our colleague’s capability to understand and work with data, which is key to our digital strategy across the Group.

We have used the last two years to accelerate our Digital & Data strategy, which is key to our goal of creating a more efficient operation for our passengers, partners and colleagues.”

MAG is the UK’s largest group of airports and, prior to the pandemic, 60 million passengers flew through its airports annually. Alongside passenger operations, East Midlands Airport is the UK’s largest pure freight airport, handling more than 800,000 tonnes of air cargo a year (worth a total of £27.5 billion) on more than 40,000 dedicated freighter flights.

Research by the UK Government has found that almost a quarter of employees use data skills in their work, yet a shortage of skills in this area is estimated to cost UK businesses £2bn a year.  In 2019, one in 10 job vacancies required data expertise, while over 100,000 data positions remain unfilled.

Euan Blair, CEO of Multiverse, said:  “Manchester Airport Group's objective to build the airports of the future means investing in the skills of the future. Data capabilities are central to that. The launch of this world-class Data Academy will not only build those capabilities, but it also represents a significant investment in its workforce and their development."

Apprentices on our programmes will learn vital data skills that can be applied to their work straight away.

At Multiverse, our mission is to create an outstanding alternative to university and corporate training, and we're delighted to be partnering with Manchester Airport Group to make it happen."

Multiverse apprentices benefit from one-to-one coaching with an industry expert and are supported by a thriving community with events, socials, mentoring and leadership programmes designed to exceed the best of the university experience.

As demand increases Manchester Airport starts terminal reopening......

Manchester Airport is gradually reopening Terminal Three from today!

The phased reopening will start with the terminal being used for arriving passengers travelling with a select number of airlines.

Some passengers set to return via Terminal Three from this Sunday, with flights to use both runways from 5th April

Those flying with the airlines listed below will continue to check-in and go through security in Terminal One, but when they return back to Manchester, they will arrive into Terminal Three. While the two terminals are directly next to each other, passengers are advised to consider these changes when making drop-off, pick-up and parking arrangements.

  • Aurigny
  • British Airways
  • Eastern Airways
  • Iberia Express
  • Loganair
  • Ryanair
  • Vueling

Flybe will also fly into Terminal Three once the airline has resumed services from Manchester later in the year.

Those travelling over the coming weekend should also factor in extra time for their journey to the airport, due to closures on the M56, and the clocks changing on Sunday.

Passengers flying on or after 27th March with British Airways, Iberia Express, Ryanair and Vueling will be asked to use the shops, restaurants and boarding gates within Terminal Three and will be directed to these areas once they have passed through Terminal One security – the two terminals are linked airside, with signage in place to direct passengers.

Those flying with these airlines who have bookings for the Terminal One Escape Lounge have been contacted to advise them of the changes, and invited to cancel and rebook from Terminal Three with a discount code.

Passengers with Aurigny, Eastern Airlines and Loganair will continue to use the Terminal One facilities for outbound journeys, and will only use Terminal Three when arriving into Manchester.

Food, drink and retail options open in Terminal Three will include:

Terminal Three Departure Lounge: Biza Duty Free, the Lion and Antelope, The Nook, Kiosco, Pork & Pickle, Costa Coffee, WH Smith, Boots.

Terminal Three Arrivals: Travelex and WH Smith.

Operating hours for each unit will vary, but there will always be food and drink provision for passengers travelling through at any time of day.

Covid-19 measures that are still in place across Terminal One and Terminal Two will also be applied in Terminal Three, including an enhanced cleaning regime.

To allow for the additional flight movements, the airport is set to reopen its second runway from Tuesday 5th April. Initially it will operate for a limited number of hours each day and will gradually increase as the demand continues to rise. All local stakeholders will be made aware in advance of the reopening.

The remainder of Terminal Three, including the check-in hall and security, will be reopened at a later stage as the airport ramps up capacity in line with the recovery of passenger numbers, and passengers will be kept informed of any further changes.

A range of other retail units are also set to open in time for the peak summer season:

  • Starbucks – Terminal Two Check-In
  • Café Balzar Terminal One Airside
  • Wagamama Terminal Two Airside
  • Pizza Luxe – Terminal One Airside
  • Barburrito – Terminal Two Airside
  • WH Smith Bookstore – Terminal Two Airside
  • Apiary – Terminal Two Airside
  • Boots – Terminal Two Airside

When Wagamama opens it will launch with its new seasonal menu, which includes breakfast options only available at airport locations.

Karen Smart, Managing Director of Manchester Airport, said:  "After almost two years of closure, it is a positive step forward on the road to recovery to be able to partially reopen Terminal Three and resume operating from both runways.

We have taken this decision in light of an increase in passenger numbers since Covid-19 restrictions were lifted, which is projected to continue into the summer. People who these changes apply to should make sure they bear this in mind when making their travel arrangements.

We are also aware many passengers won’t have flown for a long time so would always encourage them to prepare for their airport journey in advance, and to remind themselves of the rules around security and hand luggage.”

Even though the UK government has now scrapped Covid-19 ravel restrictions, passengers are still reminded to check the advice for the country they are travelling to in advance of departure. Passengers with specific queries about their flights should contact their airline directly.
