Qantas will significantly enhance its network of lounges in Australia and overseas....

The Australian carrier Qantas has announced it will significantly enhance its network of lounges in Australia and overseas, elevating the pre-flight and transit travel experience for customers to a new level of luxury at key destinations.

The $100-million investment features four brand new lounges, including a new flagship First Lounge at London’s Heathrow Airport, and an extensive upgrade program of existing international and domestic lounges, including:

New First Lounge at London’s Heathrow Airport
Re-opening of a refreshed Hong Kong International Lounge
Complete refurbishment and expansion of International Business Lounge in Sydney
Updated and expanded International Business Lounge in Melbourne
New Hobart Qantas Club
New Broome Regional Lounge with double the seats

It’s the single biggest investment in the Qantas lounge network in more than a decade and comes as the airline expands its Domestic and International routes and starts to take delivery of next-generation aircraft.

The $100-million investment in lounges is phased over three years and is included in the Group’s existing capital expenditure forecast.

The national carrier has an extensive lounge network, including 42 in Australia (12 of which are in regional destinations) and 9 overseas.

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said the faster-than-expected recovery in travel demand meant the airline could accelerate investment in its award-winning lounge network.

“Being back in profit means we’re back to making long-term investments for our customers. That started with the major aircraft order we announced last year and now we’re building on that with a major investment in our lounges,” said Mr Joyce.

“Millions of people a year visit our lounges and they are typically our frequent flyers who travel with us the most, so anything we do to improve them is a way of saying thank you to our most loyal customers.

“We have three new and upgraded lounge spaces due to open this year and the pipeline we’re announcing today will take us through to 2025.

“London is one of the most important destinations on our network and it’s the perfect location for a First Lounge, especially with our direct Project Sunrise flights on the way. Heathrow is one of the world’s busiest airports so we’re very pleased to be working with them to secure a great space in the terminal for an additional lounge,” Mr Joyce added.

Subject to agreement with Heathrow Airport and UK regulators, the luxury London First Lounge is expected to feature direct access to boarding gates, sweeping views of the airfield, a focus on wellbeing features and an unrivalled dining experience. The targeted opening date will align with the first Project Sunrise flights direct to Sydney.

The Qantas global lounge upgrade program includes:

Delta brings signature lounge experience to Haneda Airport - say hello to Delta Sky Club at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport

Delta is opening its first Delta Sky Club at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport – the only club there operated by a U.S. airline – a luxurious addition featuring regional specialties as Japan gradually eases pandemic-era restrictions and welcomes business and leisure travelers alike.

“We’ve been looking forward to this day for years,” said Claude Roussel, Managing Director – Delta Sky Club. “Bringing the signature Delta Sky Club experience to Haneda as we continue to grow our network of premium, one-of-a-kind lounges is a huge moment for our Asia-Pacific partners, and all future Haneda Club customers.”

Haneda marks Delta Sky Club’s third new lounge of the year, with the airline’s two largest Clubs – located at Terminal C at New York’s LaGuardia Airport and Terminal 3 at Los Angeles International Airport – just opened this spring. Across the network, Delta is building more state-of-the-art Delta Sky Clubs and expanding existing Clubs to deliver an even more premium experience for guests wishing to relax and recharge during travel.

The premier space signifies the completion of Delta’s service shift from Tokyo’s Narita airport to Haneda, which is more conveniently located and favored by business travellers. Initially set to open in the summer of 2020 ahead of the Olympic games, the long-awaited Club has sat empty since March 2020. As Japan gradually reopens to international travel, the Delta Sky Club team is ready to share the new lounge with the world.

Located on the fifth floor of Terminal 3, the Club features a premium bar serving seasonal cocktails, wines, beers, spirits and Japanese sake – all complimentary for guests. A specialty, made-to-order noodle bar staffed by a dedicated chef will provide a delicious taste of the popular regional cuisine. A buffet bar will serve international and Asian-inspired meals prepared with fresh, seasonal ingredients in the Club’s restaurant-quality kitchen.

Other features of the over-9,000-square-foot Club include:

Seating options to accommodate a wide array of travelers, including booths for quiet work.

Power outlets at nearly every seat.

High-speed Wi-Fi.

Five premium shower rooms.

Visitors to the Club will enjoy unique design touches that celebrate Japanese culture, curated artwork and rich interiors reflective of traditional Japanese patterns and textures. Expansive windows provide panoramic views of the airfield and city skyline and, on clear days, a distant view of Japan’s most famous natural landmark, Mount Fuji.

Delta to time limit stays in lounges.

Delta to time limit stays in lounges.

In a bid to combat overcrowding at its airside executive lounges, the U.S. mega-carrier Delta is to limit the amount of time full fare-paying frequent flyers can spend in there.

Now the carrier is indicating that you can not enter the lounge for any earlier than three hours before your flight,  no matter where you are going.   The firm is installing boarding pass reader machines at the entrance to lounges to halt anyone trying to gain early entry to the converted spaces.

Delta says the measure is to stop overcrowding in the SkyClub lounges, and is less than their original plan of also denying customers to option to use the lounges at their arrival airport as well.

Many regular passengers have said that as Delta makes its lounges more special,  adding extra, over-the-top options, it makes them way more attractive to new passengers.  Others have said the new policy will have a detrimental effect on the full fare-paying passengers as it won't solve the overcrowding and will penalise them if their flights are delayed, rescheduled or have a long lay-over.  Others have pointed out that by allowing holders of certain credit and charge cards access to the lounges they have effectively trebled the number of users thereby directly contributing to overcrowding, thereby rewarding non-Delta customers whilst disadvantaging the most loyal Delta members.

Delta has transformed its Sky Club lounge at Nashville International Airport (BNA)

An expansive new kitchen will allow lounge teams to enhance the Club’s food and beverage service, serving seasonal, chef-inspired food options made from scratch. After beginning construction in 2020, today Delta Sky Club celebrates the completed renovation of the Nashville International Airport (BNA) lounge. The reimagined space adds over 10,000 square feet and nearly 200 seats to the original Club.

Delta today unveiled a stunning renovation of the Delta Sky Club at Nashville International Airport (BNA), putting the finishing touches on an upgrade that reflects the city’s growing prominence as a tourist and conference destination, and one that will further cement Delta’s reputation as Nashville’s premium airline.

At quadruple its original size and with expanded views of the airfield, the premiere space is the latest in a string of planned Delta Sky Club investments this year – just last week, the largest lounge in the network opened at the new Terminal C facility at New York – LaGuardia Airport. Across the network, Delta is building more state-of-the-art Clubs and expanding existing Clubs to deliver an elevated experience for guests looking to relax and recharge during travel.

Customers who visit the transformed 13,500-square-foot Club will enjoy 18-foot-high ceilings, private phone booths, sleek finishes and new furniture with seating for up to 275 guests – a near 200-seat improvement on the Club’s capacity. An expansive new kitchen will allow lounge teams to enhance the Club’s food and beverage service, serving seasonal, chef-inspired food options made from scratch.

The reimagined Club includes creative design touches that pay tribute to Nashville’s status as a music mecca. A chandelier shaped like a guitar pick, designed specifically for this Club, makes for a one-of-a-kind lighting fixture. Wood slats adorning the ceiling and walls mimic guitar strings in another subtle homage to the city’s musical reputation. LEGO® portraits of country music legends like Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash provide a whimsical look at artists who made their names in Nashville.

Every aspect of this Club was thoughtfully curated and designed, from the artwork to the seating options

United Airlines opens its largest Club location in the U.S at Newark Liberty International Airport,

United Airlines announced the opening of its new, nearly 30,000 square-foot United Club location at Newark Liberty International Airport, offering travellers a modern design, enhanced amenities and culinary offerings, locally-sourced art and furniture pieces and views of the Manhattan skyline. Located in Terminal C3 near gate C123, this club is the largest club in United's network, and is opening just in time for the Memorial Day holiday, which the airline expects will be one of its busiest travel weekends so far this year.

"As more and more customers return to the skies, United is committed to delivering a superior customer experience on and off the plane, especially in increasingly crowded airports," said Aaron McMillan, United's managing director of hospitality and planning. "Our new Newark Club location is carefully designed with the customer at the forefront with thoughtful touches like murals and décor that reflect the local community. This design theme and commitment to creating a locally-inspired experience will set the precedent for future club openings and renovations across our network."

The Newark United Club location features a new design and reflects a modern take on the United Club experience. It showcases many firsts for the club, as well as existing premium offering, including the following:

The largest club in our network: The club features more than 480 seats across spaces for lounging, working, private dining and socializing.

Spa-like showers: Members can freshen-up in one of the six, spa-like shower suites at Newark, stocked with Sunday Riley products.

Coffee shop experience: Staffed by a barista ready to prepare their favorite hand-crafted drinks, flyers can get inspired at the full-service coffee bar, featuring illy signature blend of 100 percent Arabica beans, in addition to culinary offerings in all United Clubs, like complimentary beverages and snacks.

Modern, Newark-inspired design: Flyers can enjoy unmatched views of the Manhattan skyline amidst locally-sourced furniture pieces and décor, as well as the new design and color scheme that will be rolled-out in future new and refurbished clubs. The space also includes modern amenities, like self-scan entry for quick access and free, high-speed Wi-Fi.

Sustainable, green materials: As part of the airline's sustainability commitment, the Club is designed with sustainable materials and features, such as WaterSense-rated fixtures, enhanced indoor air quality, green cleaning and more.

Additionally, in collaboration with The Newark Museum of Art and Gallery Aferro, the new club location prominently features two murals created by local artists, Gilbert Hsiao and Dahlia Elsayed. Inspired by the musical legacy in the Newark area and United's iconic history, Hsiao's mural, located in the club's entryway, is a deceptively simple, eye-catching piece featuring dots and circles to represent abstract beats in space as well as nod to the United globe. Elsayed's artwork, situated in the club's lounge, is an abstract and textural piece, referencing Arshile Gorky's famous 1936-67 murals at EWR, with imagery inclusive of built and natural environments of the New York / New Jersey area.

In collaboration with teams from Air France and the Group ADP, the entire space and most of the furniture were designed by the Jouin Manku agency, founded by Canadian architect Sanjit Manku and French designer Patrick Jouin. The idea of levitation and grace guided the creative duo, to offer the airline's customers a real moment suspended in time and enjoy total relaxation before they board.

Following Charlotte Perriand, Andrée Putman and more recently Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance and Mathieu Lehanneur, Air France's choice to associate itself with this prestigious designer once again illustrates its tradition of working with the best architects and designers of its time, to continue telling its legendary story.

A haven of peace and serenity at the heart of the airport, the lounge, with its curved features and relaxing vibe, is open, airy and uncomplicated at first glance. There is something for everyone, depending on the amount of time customers have before boarding, to rest, freshen up, work or enjoy something to eat and drink.

Air France unveils its fully redesigned lounge at Montreal-Trudeau airport

Air France officially opened its fully redesigned lounge at Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. In association with the Plaza Premium Group, the airline now offers its Business and Flying Blue Elite Plus customers a vast, elegant and welcoming space, promoting French-style hospitality to enhance their travel experience.

Located in the international section of the terminal, this 490 sq. m. lounge has a seating capacity of 149. Bathed in light, it boasts a large bay window offering a view of the runways, the airline’s aircraft and one of the slopes of Mount Royal overlooking the city of Montreal.

Air France worked together with Canadian companies to create most of the furniture and lighting. The Air France colours - shades of blue, greys and whites, with touches of red – are dominant, as well as the Accent, the Air France brand symbol, and the winged seahorse, the company’s historical symbol, reminding everyone of its rich history. Champagne lacquered metal screens provide structure to the lounge.

At the entrance, customers are welcomed by Plaza Premium Group agents. Automatic eligibility kiosks are also available for greater fluidity.

They then enter the main lounge area, where seats and large sofas are available for everyone to relax, eat or work in comfort. A shared work area is also available. Free Wi-Fi and USB sockets are also available to all customers.

Flying Blue Ultimate customers have access to a more private space, with large sofas and seats to feel at home.

An area allows customers to shower or freshen up before their flight. Finally, for those looking for travel inspiration, an ’Air France Travel Guide’ screen gives customers ideas for their upcoming trips.

Catering at the heart of the lounge

At the heart of the lounge, a vast area offers catering centred around French cuisine. A self-service buffet offers hot and cold, savoury and sweet dishes to meet everyone’s expectations throughout the day. The company also offers vegetarian and gluten-free dishes. A large bar also offers a wide selection of French wines and champagnes.

This fall, the lounge will introduce a new dedicated catering service in the cozy atmosphere of the ‘Night Service’ area.  This offer anticipates the desire for rest of Business customers travelling from Montreal to Paris on the last evening flight. They can choose to enjoy in the lounge a real French-style gourmet meal, identical to that served on board, with in-seat restaurant-style service. Starters, hot dishes, cheese, desserts and a wine and champagne list will be offered to these eligible clients. During the flight, they can then enjoy their night on board to the full. If they make the request, their meal tray will not be loaded on the flight to limit food waste. Customers who wish to do so will still be able to enjoy another meal on board.

In an eco-responsible approach, Air France favours local and seasonal products for its catering offer. In addition, to limit the consumption of single-use plastic bottles, the airline provides its customers with water fountains, as well as plastic-free cutlery. It also pays particular attention to limiting food waste, selective waste sorting and recycling of catering utensils. In the showers, the facilities are also eco-responsible.

The transformation of the lounge also meant that the old furniture had to be disposed of. Some items were donated to a charity. Others were offered at auction to Air France-KLM staff in Montreal. All proceeds went to the Montreal-based Le Chaînon Foundation, which helps women in need.

The Air France lounge in Montreal is open daily from 2pm to 10pm for Air France and KLM customers. Access is free for Business and Flying Blue Elite Plus customers, and customers travelling in Economy or Premium Economy can also purchase lounge access subject to availability.

Air France Protect, the promise of a safe trip

As part of its “Air France Protect” programme, the airline ensures the strictest health measures at every stage of the trip. It is compulsory to wear a surgical mask in the lounge. Hand sanitizer is also available throughout the lounge. The lounge will open with half the possible capacity, to ensure the necessary distancing for all. Finally, customers are invited to download the Air France Play app before their departure to enjoy a wide choice of newspapers and magazines.

This summer, Air France is operating up to 17 weekly flights between Montreal-Trudeau and Paris-Charles de Gaulle, operated by Airbus A350 and Boeing 777. This flight schedule is subject to change and has been drawn up taking into account the current health measures. Before travelling, Air France advises its customers to check the travel restrictions and the documents required on arrival at their destination.
