Jet2 to expand at London Stansted Airport

Jet2 has confirmed this week that it will continue to expand at London Stansted Airport for Summer 23, with an extra aircraft coming into operation at the base after the company secured additional slots to support its ongoing growth.

The addition of a 15th based aircraft enables Jet2 and Jet2holidays, the UK’s leading tour operator to the Mediterranean, to add flights and holidays to a huge number of sun-soaked destinations across the Balearics, Croatia, Greece and Turkey, giving customers and independent travel agents even more choice and flexibility.

This expansion means that Jet2 and Jet2holidays will now operate over 225 weekly flights to 42 destinations from London Stansted Airport in Summer 23.

With over 2.1 million seats now on sale from London Stansted Airport in Summer 23, this represents a capacity increase of more than 10% compared to Summer 22. Croatia – Dubrovnik and Split.
Greece – Corfu, Crete (Chania), Crete (Heraklion), Kos, Kefalonia, and Rhodes.

Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2 and Jet2holidays said: “This expansion is the latest demonstration of our continued commitment to investing in our London Stansted operations. Earlier this year we celebrated five years since the launch of flights and holidays from London Stansted, and since day one the reaction from customers and independent travel agents has been incredible. We are all set for our biggest ever Summer from London Stansted Airport, and the addition of a 15th based aircraft enables us to take even more customers away on our award-winning package holidays and flights, whilst giving them more choice than ever before.”

Jet2 plane diverts for toilet issue.......

Photo Jet2
An Airbus A321 belonging to UK holiday airline Jet2 had to divert on its way from Gran Canaria to Manchester to the Spanish city Bilbao.  The exact reason why the jet had to deviate from its original route wasn't initially given to air traffic controllers but was later spilt when the plane was on the ground for two hours.

Aircraft registered G-HLYB was approximately halfway through their journey when an issue with the plane's toilets caused the unscheduled stop. It appears from reports that the waste tank had not been emptied in Gran Canaria and thus preventing all four toilets onboard from working.   Once the tank had been emptied in Bilbao, they started working again.

There is no word on whether the recent addition of Yorkshire Tea to the Jet2 menu had any impact on the issue.

Jet2’s new In-Flight Menu has a number of other new additions too, to give customers more choice and variety than ever.

Pizza Twists in two tasty flavours – Margherita and Pepperoni. Available from 8th November, customers can pre-order the Pizza Twists or buy onboard to enjoy a taste of Italy.

The Ploughman’s Snack Box is also back by popular demand. This includes classics like Jacob’s Cream Crackers, Branston Pickle, Applewood Cheese spread and Ilchester Cheese spread, plus Mini Cheddars.

Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Yorkshire Tea and offering even more choice to customers by adding the popular tea brand to our In-Flight Menu. The partnership means that we are the first UK airline to offer Yorkshire Tea onboard, and we are sure that this new addition to our menu will delight customers looking to enjoy a tasty brew as they fly off on a getaway. We pride ourselves on delivering the very best customer service in every area, and that includes offering a wide selection of classic snacks, healthy food options, sweet treats, and refreshing drinks while customers jet away with us. We look forward to seeing Yorkshire Tea take to the skies and cannot wait for our customers to try the exciting choice on this new menu.”

Jet2 ramps up capacity for next year

Image Jet2
UK leisure airline and holiday firm Jet2 have announced a massive capacity increase to a number of destinations next year.

Jet2 already has a large programme to Turkey and the Canary Islands for Summer 23 and has now expanded this even further, in particular during the October half-term period. Over 50 weekly flights have been added for the half-term holidays next year to Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Tenerife in the Canary Islands, and Izmir, Bodrum, Antalya and Dalaman in Turkey.

The extra capacity has been put on sale from nine of Jet2 and Jet2holiday’s UK bases - Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, East Midlands, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle International and London Stansted Airports, and are perfectly timed for the October half-term.

The leisure firm has expanded their Summer 23 programmes to sunshine favourites in Mainland Spain, Portugal, Greece, the Balearic Islands, Italy, Cyprus and Croatia too.

The additional flights represent over 45,000 extra seats going on sale, giving holidaymakers and independent travel agents even more choice and flexibility, as well as fantastic value, when it comes to booking or travelling on a Summer 23 holiday, particularly during the October half-term.

Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2 and Jet2holidays said: “We are seeing strong demand throughout Summer 23, with the October half-term period proving to be an extremely popular time for families to enjoy a holiday. In response to that, we have added additional capacity across popular destinations in the Canary Islands and Turkey, as well as to other sunshine favourites in the Mediterranean. As families are increasingly looking for great value holidays, booking a half-term holiday for next year now allows them to get the price locked in. While the size and scale of our Summer 23 programme means we are already offering unrivalled choice, we are expanding this even further and giving customers and independent travel agents even more flexibility to book or enjoy a holiday.”

He added: “With customers flocking to get Summer 23 holiday booked in their diaries, we are anticipating a hugely successful summer season and are confident that these additional flights will be a massive hit.”

Portugal moved to UK's amber list....

The UK's Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced on Thursday evening that Portugal had been moved to the amber list in the first update to the government’s traffic light lists for international travel. The UK says it has taken the decision to safeguard public health against variants of concern and protect the vaccine rollout.

In addition to Portugal's downgrade,  seven countries Afghanistan, Bahrain, Costa Rica, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Sudan, and Trinidad and Tobago have been added to the red list with all changes coming into effect at 4am on Tuesday 8 June.

The decision to move Portugal - which includes Madeira and the Azores to the amber list follows increased official concern over the spread of variants of coronavirus, including a mutation of the Delta variant, which posed a risk of holidaymakers and visitors bringing it back into the UK if not required to quarantine.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said:  "The public has always known travel will be different this year and we must continue to take a cautious approach to reopening international travel in a way that protects public health and the vaccine rollout.

While we are making great progress in the UK with the vaccine rollout, we continue to say that the public should not travel to destinations outside the green list."

The news has not been welcomed by airlines and holiday companies, budget carrier easyJet said it was shocked by the decision and would be a huge blow to those already on holiday in Portugal as well as those that had booked breaks away there in forthcoming weeks.

The airline's CEO Johan Lundgren said: "With Portuguese rates similar to those in the UK it simply isn’t justified by the science."

However, there has been an almost doubling in the COVID-19 test positivity rate in Portugal since the traffic light system was first introduced. Far exceeding the ONS estimated national positivity rate in the UK. More significantly, according to data published on GISAID, 68 cases of the Delta variant of concern have been identified in Portugal, including cases of the Delta variant with an additional, potentially detrimental, mutation.

Jet2 delays restart of flights and holidays to June

Parked up and nowhere to go - at least until 23rd June   Photo Jet2

Steve Heapy, the CEO of budget holiday carrier Jet2 and Jet2holidays is once again bemoaning the government's lack of clarity in the framework for recommencing international air travel and has put back the proposed restart of its flight and holiday programme to the last full week of June.

Heapy says the company had studied the government's framework carefully, but still can't decide when to start operating as normal,  "With a heavy heart that we have taken the decision to extend the suspension of flights and holidays up to and including 23rd June 2021. Where customers yet to travel are affected by any programme changes, we will automatically cancel their booking with a full refund, and our team of travel experts will be in touch to help them to book their summer getaway for later in the year."

Despite moaning about the lack of clarity, the firm says "the health and safety of our customers and colleagues will, of course, continue to be our number one priority, and we look forward to taking our customers on their well-deserved holidays once again. We welcome the Government’s ambition to reopen travel, however, the time has come for the industry to receive the necessary detail to make this happen."

Over 100 pilots to lose their jobs at Jet2

Jet2 is set to shed at least 100 pilot positions from the company soon according to pilots union BALPA after the carrier rejected the latest alternative jobs retention proposal.

The airline and holiday company has faced a tough few months recently following the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Back in June, the union was negotiating with the company based in Leeds over the loss of 102 pilots.  This weekend, the union has, reports PA media, that Jet2 is going ahead with the redundancies.

BALPA has put several other options to the company, which have not been accepted and the airline will continue with the job losses the union advises. General secretary Brian Strutton said: "This announcement is yet another which shows the desperate state of the British aviation sector. Despite enormous efforts to work with Jet2 to find ways of saving these jobs, the airline is insisting on 102 redundancies. This will be a particular kick in the teeth as many of those who may lose their jobs have recently joined the airline after having been dismissed from Thomas Cook which went into administration last year."

Strutton continued the union's demand for more support from the government,   "The Government has a significant role to play in supporting the vital British aviation industry. -  the Government must stump up the support to help the airline industry which is doing its best to get back on track but keeps being knocked back at every juncture."
