Icelandair sees passenger numbers increase during June....

During the month of June this year, the total number of Icelandair’s passengers increased to just over 431,000.  

The number of passengers on international flights was 407 thousand compared to 72 thousand in June 2021 and 291 thousand in May this year. The number of passengers to Iceland was 176 thousand and from Iceland around 57 thousand. Via passengers were 174 thousand or 43% of the total number of international passengers, compared to 20% in June 2021. On-time performance was 67% and was negatively affected by disruptions in the route network that were mainly resulting from challenging conditions at international airports and delays of aircraft out of maintenance due to post-pandemic supply chain issues. The load factor on international flights was 83.2%, compared to 53.6% in June 2021.

The domestic network has recovered well and already reached pre-Covid levels although also being affected by delays of aircraft out of maintenance, causing disruptions in the domestic network in June. The number of passengers on domestic flights was 25 thousand compared to 22 thousand in June last year. The load factor on domestic flights was 74.3%, compared to 72.7% in June 2021.

New lease deal for Icelandair on two Boeing 737 MAX aircraft


Icelandair has entered into agreements with BOC Aviation (BOCA), regarding long-term operating leases of two new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The aircraft are scheduled to be delivered from Boeing in the fall of 2023. This transaction will bring the total number of 737 MAX in the Icelandair fleet up to 20 aircraft. 

Bogi Nils Bogason, CEO of Icelandair Group: “We are pleased to announce the new agreements with BOCA, a long-lasting business partner. Locking in these aircraft favorable on favorable terms enables the company to expand our fleet of Boeing 737 MAX and supports our future growth plans. The aircraft offer excellent fuel-efficiency from previous generation aircraft which also contribute to our efforts of reducing the carbon emissions from our operations.” 

Icelandair, a shadow of its once-massive travel and hospitality empire is facing much greater competition from homegrown rival Play and the major U.S. airlines and has been struggling financially for some time, but now appears to have turned a corner. During the month of May, it carried a total of 290,524 on international flights, with the number of passengers to Iceland was around 116,000 and from Iceland around 51,000. Via passengers were around 124,000 or 43% of the total number of international passengers. The carrier's load factor on international flights was up to 74%, compared to 35% in May 2021.   


Air Models have a range of aircraft models, including some special 737 MAX models, including this one in the colours of flydubai.

Icelandair signs LOI for four additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft


Icelandair has entered into a Letter of Intent for the purchase of four Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The aircraft were built in 2018 and are scheduled to be delivered in the fall of 2022. This transaction will bring the total number of 737 MAX in the Icelandair fleet up to 18 aircraft.

Bogi Nils Bogason, Icelandair CEO: “We are pleased to announce a further expansion to our fleet of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft on favourable terms. The MAX has proven to be a good fit to our route network and its fuel efficiency contributes positively to our efforts of reducing the carbon emissions from our operations. We have been ramping up our operations, expanding our strong route network that connects Europe and North America via Iceland. This summer we offer direct flights from Iceland to 44 destinations, up to five times a day. This addition to our fleet allows us to further increase our services by adding new destinations and increasing frequency to our current destinations.”

However, according to an Icelandair first officer, 6 pilots have reported issues to maintenance over unusual or unexpected events occurring in the cockpit to flight controls or systems in as many weeks when flying on MAX jets.

Icelandair sees passenger numbers increase in May


In May 2022, the total number of Icelandair passengers was around 316,000 compared to around 40,000 in May 2021 and 242,000 in April this year. The total capacity in May was 75% of May 2019 capacity levels.

The total number of passengers on international flights vas around 291,000 compared to around 22,000 in May 2021 and 219,000 in April this year. The number of passengers to Iceland was around 116,000 and from Iceland around 51,000. Via passengers were around 124,000 or 43% of the total number of international passengers, compared to 8% in May 2021. On-time performance was 80%, despite challenging conditions at airports post Covid. The load factor on international flights was 74%, compared to 35% in May 2021. During May, Icelandair continued the fast ramp-up of the network by reopening its second connecting bank and adding eight gateways to the network.

The number of passengers on domestic flights was around 26,000, compared to 18,000 in May last year. The domestic network has recovered well and year-to-date the number of domestic passengers has been 94% of 2019 passenger figures. The load factor on domestic flights was 80%, compared to 72% in May 2021. Year to date, the number of domestic passengers has increased by 39%, compared to last year.

Sold block hours in charter flights decreased by 12% compared to May 2021. Freight measured in Freight Ton Kilometers decreased by 8% year-on-year.

Icelandair passenger numbers slowly increase yet losses continue to mount.


In April 2022, the total number of Icelandair passengers was around 242,000, up from 184,000 in March, which was up from 125,000 in February. The total capacity in April was 71% of April 2019 capacity levels, up from 64% in March.

The total number of passengers on international flights was around 219,000, 25 times more than in April 2021, when around 9,000 international passengers travelled with Icelandair. The number of passengers to Iceland was around 95,000 and from Iceland around 53,000. Via passengers were around 71,000, or around one-third of the total number of international passengers, compared to around 20% in March 2022 and around 40% in April 2019. On-time performance was 85%. The load factor on international flights was 76%, compared to 33% in April 2021.

The number of passengers on domestic flights was around 23,000, compared to 12,000 in April last year. The load factor on domestic flights was around 80%, compared to 62% in April 2021. Year to date, the number of domestic passengers has increased by 40% compared to last year.

Sold block hours in charter flights decreased by 6% compared to April 2021. Freight measured in Freight Ton Kilometers increased by 29% since last year.

The carrier is facing more competition on its International flights, not only from the US carriers that are restarting flights to Iceland from various hubs but also from two new Icelandic start-up airlines that seem to be building a good market share.
