Top 25 Historic Hotels of America Most Haunted Hotels

Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation for recognizing and celebrating the finest historic hotels in the United States, offers travellers spectacular experiences and stories to take home with them, including the folklore of where they stayed the night. For some hotels, the past is not only present in their historic architecture and authentic character but also—according to legends—in the souls attached to them.

The historic hotels highlighted in the 2023 Top 25 Historic Hotels of America Most Haunted Hotels List are places where generations of staff and guests pass on tales of spectral Revolutionary War soldiers, smoky silhouettes of U.S. Presidents, the melancholy spirits of tragic would-be brides, unexplained footsteps, as well as friendly phantom bellhops and engineers. For believers and sceptics alike, these hotels offer legends of guests who never want to leave and staff who never stop helping. Some historic hotels celebrate the spooky season with “A Room With A Boo” packages, pumpkin carving contests, ghost story readings, haunted history tours, and speciality cocktails. Adventure seekers and heritage travellers interested in a local legend need to look no further than the grand hotels, legendary luxury resorts, and iconic inns found across the United States in Historic Hotels of America.

Concord’s Colonial Inn (1716) Concord, Massachusetts

Due to the hotel’s age and role during the American Revolutionary War, Concord’s Colonial Inn in Concord, Massachusetts, is rumoured to have a few resident ghosts. During the war, part of the historic inn was privately owned by Dr. Timothy Minot; it was where he operated a small medical practice. When Continental soldiers were injured at the Battles of Lexington and Concord at the North Bridge, they were brought to his home for medical attention. Dr. Minot used what is now the Liberty Room as a hospital and Room 24 as an operating room. Many guests who have spent the night in the infamously haunted room have reported some strange activity. Thrill seekers travel great distances to stay at the inn’s infamous Room 24, hoping to catch a glimpse of some supernatural activity. But the inn's resident spirits do not just confine themselves to Room 24; they like to wander the halls of the Concord’s Colonial Inn just as much as guests do. Both an older woman and a tall, slim gentleman with a top hat have been spotted in the sitting room–thought perhaps to be former residents Henry David Thoreau himself or his aunt entertaining company. A young girl wearing a bonnet has been seen walking around by the front desk of the hotel. Both guests and employees have spotted apparitions in 18th-century attire sitting in an otherwise empty Liberty Room. Books and décor fall from shelves without worldly cause, and items go missing without explanation for weeks, only to turn up in odd places. Both guests and employees have heard voices coming from right behind them–only to see nothing when they turn around.

Being widely known for its more than 250 years of grand hospitality and as a favourite vacation spot for European royalty and former U.S. Presidents and their families, it should come as no surprise that a guest or two of The Omni Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Virginia, might decide to stay forever. One of the resort’s most legendary spirits involves the spirit of a jilted bride who stalks along the 14th floor. Legend has it that this young woman was set to be wed at The Homestead during the early 20th century, but her groom-to-be had become plagued by second thoughts. On the day of their wedding, the groom instructed the young woman to wait in her hotel room while he ran out for a quick errand. Unfortunately, for the bride, her beloved was never to return. Distraught, she took her own life. Guests and staff have since reported sightings of a ghostly apparition, whose outline resembles that of a woman in a wedding gown. Many believe that she is still waiting in the hotel for her long-lost lover. Some lucky few have reportedly heard the spirit speak before disappearing in a flash. In addition to this legend, overnight staff tell stories of sightings while being on late-night duty in the Great Hall. There, some believe they have seen well-dressed couples descending the stairs, but when they look up to greet them, no one is there. Similarly, there is a man in a dark suit who stands at a balcony overlooking the opposite end of the Great Hall. Again, staff say they approach to greet him only to find no one there. The Omni Homestead Resort was established in 1766 and has been a Charter Member of Historic Hotels of America since 1989.

Historic Inns of Annapolis (1772) Annapolis, Maryland

The Maryland Inn, one of the Historic Inns of Annapolis in Annapolis, Maryland, is reportedly haunted by a variety of specters since it was established in the 1770s. Supposed sightings by employees and guests include glimpses of shadowy figures dressed in Revolutionary War-era uniforms and 19th-century clothing. Unexplained noises, scents, and missing objects–experienced by some employees–are thought by some believers to have supernatural explanations. Local legend suggests that at least two of the ghosts are that of Navy Captain Charles Campbell and his intended bride, known only as The Bride. According to the tale, Captain Campbell and The Bride were separated while he was at sea, during which time The Bride waited for him at the Maryland Inn. Campbell was killed by a horse carriage as he was returning to be reunited with his love and she took her own life minutes later, both dying right outside the historic inn. Both The Bride and Captain Campbell are rumoured to haunt the Maryland Inn to this day. According to authors Mike Carter and Julia Dray in Haunted Annapolis, The Bride paces around the fourth floor and Captain Campbell has been seen in his naval uniform in the basement taproom. For guests, experiencing the ghosts in residence is uncommon but not unheard of. Some guests in the fourth-floor rooms have felt a cold presence.

MCR has acquired the iconic Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City.

MORSE Development, which developed the experiential TWA Hotel at New York City’s JFK Airport, will bring back the magic and glamour of the five-star hotel, which has been closed since 2020. An extensive renovation will revitalize the lobby, the first-floor restaurants and bars, and the hotel’s 197 guestrooms and suites. The spectacular 7,000-square-foot rooftop bar — the only venue with a view of the exclusive Gramercy Park — will also receive a full restoration.

“We will return this beloved hotel to its original splendor as the jewel of Gramercy Park — one of the most magical and unique neighbourhoods in Manhattan,” says Tyler Morse, Chairman and CEO of MCR/MORSE Development.

Built in 1924 on the site where Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Edith Wharton was born, the 18-story luxury hotel has a rich history as a haunt for athletes (Babe Ruth frequented the bar), politicians (a young John F. Kennedy Jr. stayed there with his father) and screen legends (Humphrey Bogart married stage actress Helen Menken there in 1926). But it was a true favorite of rock stars. The Clash, U2, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones all booked rooms during their tours. Blondie’s Debbie Harry lived in room 501. Madonna, who worked as a hat-check girl at the nearby club Danceteria, partied afterhours at the hotel. And when David Bowie checked in for two weeks in 1973 at the height of his The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars fame, the hotel was nicknamed “The Glamercy.” As Rolling Stone put it in 2018, “it was probably one of the only places you could call up room service to order a pick or a guitar string.”

Hotel workers in Southern California go on strike.

Hundreds of hotel workers have gone on strike in Los Angeles in a dispute over pay rates with many organising picket lines.  According to the local union, Unite Here Local 11 staff initially voted on 8th June authorizing strike action in a battle over pay. The Union is calling for a wage increase that keeps pace with rising housing costs in the Southern California area.

Reception / front desk agents, bellboys, room attendants, cooks, waiting staff and dishwashers from the following hotels have taken action

Hilton Anaheim
Sheraton Park at the Anaheim Resort
Hilton Irvine/Orange County Airport
Holiday Inn Los Angeles - LAX Airport
Hyatt Regency Los Angeles International Airport
Conrad
Fairfield Inn & Suites Los Angeles LAX/El Segundo
Aloft El Segundo Los Angeles Airport
Four Points by Sheraton Los Angeles International Airport
Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles
Westin Los Angeles Airport
Hotel June
Hilton Garden Inn LAX El Segundo
 Beverly Hilton

The union says that scores of staff at other hotels could strike at any moment and the dispute is set to escalate with more action planned. Recently one of Los Angeles’ biggest hotels, the Westin Bonaventure, agreed to the wage increases that workers need to be able to afford to live in the area.

Last week Kurt Petersen, Co-President of Unite Here Local 11, said “This walkout was the first of many actions that may come this summer by workers at hotels across Southern California, and it is only one tool in our toolbox. We have put the industry on notice that the workers have suffered enough.”

The Rome EDITION Redefines Luxury in the Eternal City.......................

Rome is a city filled with masterpieces. From the paintings of Caravaggio and Raphael to the sculptures of Bernini and the films of Federico Fellini – it is the cradle from which all that is best about Italy has emerged. So, the Eternal City was the perfect fit for the opening of the latest EDITION.

Conceived, concepted, and programmed by the visionary entrepreneur, Ian Schrager, executed and interpreted by the hotel owners, Statuto Group, the intimate 91-room Rome EDITION sets a new standard in the Eternal City. Its sophistication, attention to detail, refinement, and high design aesthetic make it set to become a meeting place for Romans and travellers alike. Positioned in one of the most enviable areas of Rome, the hotel is only a few short steps from Via Veneto, the most sought-after street in all of Italy. It was immortalised in La Dolce Vita and embodies Italian flare in all its glory. Not only that – all the major attractions are within easy reach, including the Piazza Barberini, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain and the ever-beautiful Borghese Gardens.

Built-in the 1940s and formerly occupied by one of the main Italian banks, the building is a striking example of the rationalist style and was created by Cesare Pascoletti in collaboration with the famed architect Marcello Piacentini. The stunning central staircase of rare cipollino marble from the quarries of Apuane is a testament to their genius. Original features are retained throughout, including the central courtyards and original statues and lamps.

The hotel has three unique bars, a rooftop lounge, bar and pool, a show-kitchen restaurant, a well-appointed urban wellness space with gym and treatment rooms, and a courtyard garden where guests can while away the time sipping their favourite drink or sampling the peerless food menu from adored Roman Chef Paola Colucci, the hotel’s chef partner. The 91 rooms, including 17 suites, have all the design elements the brand is renowned for: the muted tones, the accents of walnut wood and stunning custom-designed furniture.

Live like Barbie 'n' Ken at Barbie’s Malibu DreamHouse

If you fancy a stay with a difference, definitely something to share on Instagram or your favourite other social media network then why not stay in a doll's house.

Yes, you too can be like Barbie or Ken or one of their plastic friends at a life-sized Barbie dreamhouse which is opening its doors for overnight stays prior to the "Barbie" movie being released.

Apparently,  the three-floor mansion in Malibu mansion is an exact replica of the movie set and is available to book for the night on Airbnb and Ken is hosting.   So, maybe while Barbie is away,  the boys come out to play!

Whilst, so termed "Kenergy" is on show here, Barbie’s signature pink remains ever-present throughout the life-size, toy-inspired home, as she’s done her own redecorating since the last time the Malibu DreamHouse was available for guests.

“We all have dreams, and Barbie is lucky enough to have a house full of them,” said Ken. “But now, it’s my turn, and I can’t wait to host guests inside this one-of-a-kind – dare I say, one-of-a-Ken? – digs.”

Ken is adding hosting to one of his passions in celebration of the release of the highly anticipated BARBIE film, directed by Greta Gerwig, written by Gerwig & Noah Baumbach, and starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrara, Kate McKinnnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.

Located in sunny Malibu, the oceanfront mansion features panoramic views and serves as the perfect backdrop for Ken’s picture-plastic paradise. Fans will be able to request to book Ken’s bedroom in the Malibu DreamHouse for two individual one-night stays** for up to two guests each on July 21 and July 22, 2023. All stays will be free of charge – because Ken couldn’t figure out how to put a price on Barbie’s Malibu DreamHouse – after all, Ken’s thing is beach, not math!

Everyone in Barbie Land can request to book Ken’s room in Barbie’s Malibu DreamHouse beginning July 17 at 10:00 AM PT at airbnb.com/kendreamhouse. Guests are responsible for their own travel to and from Malibu.

In celebration of BARBIE hitting theatres on July 21, and to honour girls’ empowerment, Airbnb will make a one-time donation to Save the Children. Save the Children provides learning resources and support to children, families, and communities in 100+ countries to build girls’ confidence and help them excel in school – ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to achieve success.
