Celebrate Black History Month by Supporting Black-owned and Black-led Businesses Around the U.S.

In a 2021 speech at the Americas Lodging Investment Summit, Hilton President and CEO Chris Nassetta called hospitality “an engine of hope and beacon of opportunity.” This is especially true for entrepreneurs looking to create careers and long-term business opportunities by investing in, managing or owning hotels.

Recognizing that more minority investment is needed, Hilton is supporting programs like She Has a Deal (SHaD), founded by Hilton hotel owner Tracy L. Prigmore, that helps pave the way for future minority owners through educational and financial support programs. Beginning this year, Hilton has also joined the U.S. Black Chambers (USBC), as part of our ongoing commitment to learning and growing with Black businesses. This commitment is furthered through our Hilton Supply Management Supplier Diversity Program, providing minority business groups opportunities to feature their products or services in Hilton’s corporate and managed properties.

To honor the Black community for its many contributions to American society and the world this Black History Month, we are proud to highlight several Black-owned hotels across the Hilton system and invite you to visit them for your next stay, and a few activities to engage in, supporting Black businesses, along the way. Many of these hotels are recognized by the National Association of Black Hotel Owners, Operators & Developers (NABHOOD), which provides a snapshot of Black-owned and -operated hotels across the country. As the country recovers from the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting these independently owned hotels and other Black-owned businesses remains critical in the year ahead.

Washington, D.C.

Known for its history, art, music, fashion, and of course, brunch, Washington, D.C., like many other U.S. metropolitan cities, allows you to sample a variety of Black-owned businesses all in one spot. Did you know that the world’s oldest continuously operating soul food restaurant is located in the District? Or that go-go music, a sub-genre of funk music created by D.C.’s Black community, was named the official music of D.C. in 2020? It’s no surprise that the nation’s capital is also home to a variety of Black-owned businesses. D.C.’s strong Black history can be felt in every aspect of the city, and recent years have seen a shift with the community reclaiming its roots. Come shop, eat or party in the nation’s capital to celebrate Black History Month, but also be sure to make your trip an educational one by visiting one of the city’s many Black-owned bookstores or drop by the nation’s largest museum dedicated to African-American history and culture to learn about the history of Black entrepreneurship and its impact on American society.

Homewood Suites by Hilton Washington, D.C. Downtown is located in the heart of the nation’s capital. Owned by RLJ Lodging Trust, a publicly-traded real estate investment trust founded by Black Entertainment Television (BET) Founder Robert L. Johnson, this hotel is located close to many area attractions, including the Capital One Arena (home of the NHL's Washington Capitals), the White House, the Washington Monument, and the Smithsonian museums.

Want to feel like you just stepped into a holiday movie

A quaint downtown area filled with cheery small-town residents. Twinkling lights, festive trees and ornamented garland decorate the boutique storefronts. Made-for-TV movies bring whimsy to the holiday season, and no doubt leave viewers yearning to experience the charm of the impossibly cute towns that serve as the backdrop for romance. If you’re looking to experience some homespun hospitality of your own this winter, check out these endearing destinations.

New Britain, Connecticut

There’s nothing more Americana than a small New England town, and New Britain fits the bill when it comes to a picture-perfect main street that’s brimming with classic old-world

architecture and local-run businesses. It’s the perfect setting to share a kiss under the mistletoe with a local bookstore owner, or the passionate proprietor of a tiny toy shop, as you join forces to prevent a takeover of their business by a large corporation!

Feel like a local as you take part in holiday celebrations in the town’s Central Park, which is home to an annual tree-lighting ceremony and visits from Santa. Book your stay DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Bristol, Connecticut, located in an equally charismatic city that bills itself as being “all heart,” and enjoy even more small-town vibes in a city-sized package.

Breckenridge, Colorado

Breckenridge is a stunning ski town that offers the best of everything the Rocky Mountains has to offer: A main street erected in the late 1800s, majestic snow-capped mountains, a bustling art district, craft breweries and more. While out for a stroll, you may bump into an attractive stranger you seemingly have nothing in common with; but if a snowstorm forces you to hunker down in a chalet together, you may learn you’re not so different after all!

Every winter the historic downtown turns into a sparkling snow-globe scene with more than 250,000 lights, and the town plays host to numerous special events, including a jolly Race of the Santas and the Bernese Mountain Dog Holiday Processional. Stay at the Valdoro Mountain Lodge, a traditional ski lodge where you can stay toasty in the spa and outdoor hot tub.

Dahlonega, Georgia

For those craving the allure of an adorably tiny town, but hoping for milder temperatures, consider a visit to the North Georgia city of Dahlonega. Situated amongst rolling hills and grapevines, you can alternate between exploring the quaint, Southern-style downtown area and visits to one of the many nearby wineries. Here you might spill your drink on a fellow patron, leading to a starry-eyed meet cute when you offer to pay the dry-cleaning bill.

Dahlonega gets into the holiday spirit with glimmering lights, carriage rides, a festival of trees and more. Nearby, the picturesque town of Helen offers holiday celebrations and traditions from Germany. Explore their European style Christkindlmarkt, visit the Festival of Trees at Unicoi State Park, and embark on a Winterfest Arts Tour. The Alpine-inspired Hampton Inn by Hilton Helen is perfectly positioned along the Chattahoochee River in Helen’s Bavarian Village.

MCR is the proud owner of the 141-room Hilton Garden Inn Minneapolis University Area at the University of Minnesota’s main campus that’s home to more than 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

Last fall, MCR acquired the DoubleTree from a lender who foreclosed on their borrower. MCR’s purchase price was more than a 40% discount to what the hotel previously sold for in 2018. In June 2021, MCR rebranded the hotel from a DoubleTree to a Hilton Garden Inn.

The Hilton Garden Inn is MCR’s second hotel in Minneapolis. MCR also purchased the 60-room Chambers Hotel downtown at a price that was nearly 50% below the prior owner’s cost basis.

Located on the University of Minnesota’s East Bank main campus, the Hilton Garden Inn Minneapolis University Area is across from the M Health Clinics hospital and its recently opened $160 million surgery centre. The Stadium Village light rail station — with links to Minneapolis−Saint Paul Airport — is just two blocks away.

7 Expert Tips for Wish List Travel without Breaking the Bank

Although most travellers were grounded since March 2020, their wanderlust continued to thrive. And now, as restrictions loosen in many areas, they are ready to embark on their dream excursions.

Three in four Americans plan to venture off to wish list locations on their next trip, according to a recent Hilton survey. Among their most desired destinations: the lush Hawaiian capital of Honolulu, the bright lights of Las Vegas and the bustling streets of New York City.

After a year of staying put, travellers are ready to splurge. Over half of the survey respondents (55%) said they plan to spend, on average, $2,100 more on their dream trip than they would have prior to the pandemic.

While the willingness is there, there is no need to break the bank. With a little budgeting and creativity, an affordable dream vacation is within reach. To help travellers plan the perfect trip for their wallet, Hilton has partnered with Patrice Washington, financial expert and author of “Redefine Wealth for Yourself.” Here are her top tips:

Set a Budget: A wish list trip shouldn’t send you into debt. Research costs associated with your dream vacation ahead of time — activities, meals, airfare, lodging and more — and from there, set and stick to a budget. Tracking your monthly expenses is a great way to determine where to cut back and how much money to set aside.

A Decade of Innovation in Just One Year: Seven Surprising Ways the Pandemic Has Changed Hotels Forever

"For more than a century, Hilton has pioneered many of the elements that define the hospitality industry today. In the last year, the pandemic has accelerated our innovation engine – we've thought of it as a decade of change in just 12 months. And though the experience in our hotels will be different as people begin to travel more freely, our Team Members around the world are eager to welcome our guests, sharing the light and warmth of our hospitality once again."  Said Chris Nassetta, president & CEO, Hilton

After more than a year of cancelling family vacations, postponing bucket-list trips or attending virtual conferences, travellers are looking forward to packing their suitcases and making new memories with family and friends. In fact, Hilton’s recent To New Memories campaign revealed that 94% of Americans surveyed plan on doing just that once travel restrictions lift, and that 91% of those who travel say that their hotel experiences are a memorable part of their trip.

But how has the pandemic changed that hotel experience? And what can travellers expect as they hit the road now and in years to come?

As the company that introduced the world to travel standards such as room service, the minibar and a central reservations system, Hilton was quick to adapt and innovate when the pandemic struck. Now Hilton’s experts offer their predictions for which temporary adjustments will become permanent and the impact of the pandemic on hotel stays in the future.

Event planners continue to look to hospitality industry leaders for solutions that help simplify the complex task of organizing in-person or hybrid events in the current environment – particularly as it relates to COVID-19 testing and health screenings. Throughout the pandemic, Hilton has been listening and responding to the needs of its customers, and now the world’s most hospitable company is providing event planners with COVID-19 testing and health screening resources for their event attendees.

“As more customers book in-person meetings and events, there has been a steady increase in requests and questions around COVID-19 testing and screening options for event attendees,” said Frank Passanante, senior vice president, Hilton Worldwide Sales, Americas. “In response, we expanded the resources within our Hilton EventReady Playbook to include third-party providers that can deliver a seamless experience and offer preferential pricing to our event planners.”
