Trip.com and Etihad offer travellers free flight carbon offsetting

To mark Earth Day, Trip.com, the global travel agency, and Etihad, the national airline of the UAE, today launch a month-long Travel with a smaller footprint campaign where Trip.com users booking selected Etihad flights can get their flights carbon emissions offset for free.

From Earth Day on 22nd April to 22nd May, the sustainable campaign offers Trip.com users who book Etihad flights with the 'carbon-offset' tag to get their flight's carbon emissions offset for free. Today, the campaign goes live in Singapore, the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Ireland, and will be followed by successive launches in APAC markets, including Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Thailand and Australia.

Hundreds of Etihad flights will be listed on Trip.com sites with the 'carbon-offset' tag. In line with this year's Earth Day theme of "Invest In Our Planet", according to the carbon emissions of selected flights, calculated using the ICAO Carbon Emissions Calculator, a corresponding investment will be made in accredited sustainable projects to offset the flight emissions. Trip.com users whose flights are included in this campaign will see their offset investment made in two key projects - the Katingan Petland Restoration and Conservation Project in Kalimantan Province, Indonesia, and the Cordillera Azul National Park REDD+ Project in central Peru. Both of these projects are focused on environmental protection and habitat restoration. To learn more about carbon offsetting and the projects this campaign supports, please visit Etihad's Corporate Conscious Choices site here.

Through this campaign, Trip.com users will be able to take off on their flights knowing they are doing so with an impactful investment made to offset their journey. See below for links showing all Etihad flights with free carbon emission offsetting available today on Trip.com:

Etihad Airways adds summer flights to Nice

As authorities in Abu Dhabi relax COVID-19 restrictions to allow fully vaccinated travellers to Abu Dhabi to board a flight without the need to take a PCR test, the national carrier, Etihad Airways announced the introduction of flights to Nice from its home base starting 15th June.

The twice-weekly service will operate on Wednesdays and Sundays between Abu Dhabi and Nice Côte d'Azur Airport on a modern Boeing 787 aircraft.

“As one of the most popular destinations on the French Riviera, Etihad Airways is delighted to add Nice to its summer network in 2022,” said Martin Drew, Senior Vice President Global Sales & Cargo. “This is the first time Etihad will be operating flights to Nice and Etihad is confident it will appeal to a broad range of leisure travellers looking to satisfy their wanderlust this summer.”

Situated on the southeastern coast of France, Nice is renowned for its famous waterfront, with a scenic seven-kilometre walkway known as the ‘Promenade des Anglais’. The city was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.

An elegant city on the French Riviera with a charm and a character all of its own, Nice’s sweeping Promenade des Anglais is the perfect spot to enjoy some warm Mediterranean sunshine and forms the central focus of many holidays here. It’s a place to sunbathe, try a water sport or go for an evening stroll.

Art lovers can take in everything from historic architecture to galleries and museums that showcase work from across Europe and beyond.

This is a city where you can admire the swirling domes of a Russian cathedral alongside gorgeous Italian-inspired homes and buildings.

As you browse around the colourful Cours Saleya market, you’ll hear a local dialect that is another nod to Nice’s past – it was once an Italian city and hasn’t lost touch with its roots.

A palm-lined coast, lovely sunshine, turquoise seas and the glamour of the French Riviera – it’s got the lot.

The Promenade des Anglais
fronts onto some of the area’s best beaches, with golden sands and the chance to enjoy breathtaking sunsets. Affectionately known as ‘La Prom’, it’s also home to stellar restaurants that underline why this spot has long been regarded as the stylish heart of the city.

Landmarks here include the Palais de la Méditerranée hotel and an iron sculpture called La Chaise, but there’s much more to discover.

Spend a morning at Cours Saleya market

This quintessentially French market opens daily, although on Mondays it sells furniture and trinkets rather than its usual food. Stocking up on groceries is a wonderful way to experience the real Nice and, as an added bonus, you’ll be shopping alongside the locals. The true stars of this market, though, are the flowers.

Heady scents of dahlias, fuchsias and geraniums float into the air from the colourful stalls run by growers and nurseries. Food traders tend to start and finish early, but the flower sellers stay into the early evening.

Explore the old town

Stroll through winding streets filled with the aroma of baking, patisseries and warm coffee in Nice’s colourful Old Town.

Impressive architecture hides around every corner, with historic monuments and ancient churches to discover. Castle Hill looms over the orange-tiled roofs, giving this ancient quarter of Nice a medieval feel.

Visit the Cathedral of St Reparata, with its stunning edifice decorated in multi-colours. Nice Cathedral, meanwhile, can be found in the charming Place Rossetti.

From there, discover some of the former mansions and regal retreats of Nice’s rich and famous regal buildings including the 17th century Lascaris Palace.

Etihad Airways selects Boeing Digital Solution to for 787 fleet efficiency

Etihad Airways has selected Jeppesen FliteDeck Advisor digital solution from Boeing for the carrier’s 787 Dreamliner fleet to optimize operational efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

Etihad has already found benefits from the use of FliteDeck Advisor. During a trial on several of its 787 Dreamliners, the airline found that the digital solution delivered cruise fuel savings of 1.4%, saving an average of 350 kilograms of fuel and 1,100 kilograms of CO2 per flight.

“We have been very pleased with the fuel and cost savings we have achieved with FliteDeck Advisor,” said Sulaiman Yaqoobi, vice president of Flight Operations, Etihad Airways. “FliteDeck Advisor was tested as part of the Etihad Greenliner program, and it is great to now see it deployed across the 787 fleet, helping Etihad achieve efficiency gains and reduce CO2 emissions.”

Since 2019, Boeing and Etihad have collaborated on sustainability efforts centred on the airline's 787 Dreamliner fleet, including on Etihad’s participation in Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator program, where the FliteDeck Advisor solution was initially trialled. In 2021, the two companies renewed and expanded their sustainability alliance to focus on enhancing the efficiency of navigation and flight operations, airframe technologies and sustainable practices to reduce emissions.

Etihad Airways continues support of Russian flights and trade

The Abu Dubai based Etihad Airways is continuing its Moscow flights and support of Russian trade despite the horrendous humanitarian disaster in Ukraine caused by the Russian Invasion.  The airline's cargo staff are actively seeking new business including reaching out to those dealing in aviation spare parts, local reports indicate.

The sale or distribution of commercial aircraft spare parts is currently banned to Russia from Europe and the U.S. as a result of the conflict.

The carrier operates daily flights into Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport with Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.   Etihad continues to work with Aeroflot to enhance and develop its partnership, including the launch of codeshare services across the respective networks, and exploring other areas of cooperation to enhance guest benefits.

Etihad Airways’ transformation continues to deliver results with 41% improvement on Pre-COVID performance

Etihad Airways today announced its business results for 2021, recording a strong recovery in passenger operations along with a significant improvement in financial performance, posting a much-reduced loss of US$ 476 million for 2021 (2020: US$ 1.70 billion).

The airline carried 3.5 million passengers in 2021, with an average seat load factor of 39.6%. Passenger loads doubled in the second half of the year, reaching 70.1% in December as travel demand peaked during the winter holiday period. The airline recorded a particularly strong surge in passenger volumes in Q4 following the September relaxation of mandatory quarantine periods in Abu Dhabi.

Network capacity came in at 37.21 billion ASKs for the year, with the airline connecting Abu Dhabi to 71 passenger and cargo destinations across 47 countries. The airline launched or restarted operations to 13 destinations in 2021, most notably introducing scheduled services to Tel Aviv following the normalisation of relations between the UAE and Israel.

Etihad Airways posted passenger revenues of US$ 1.07 billion in 2021, down by 14% year-on-year. While ongoing travel restrictions and new variants of the virus dampened demand, the airline saw passenger revenues bounce back in the last quarter of the year, recovering to 50% of 2019 levels in December.

Cargo operations meanwhile continued to outperform expectations, with a 27% year-on-year increase in freight carried in 2021 (729,200 tonnes) coupled with a rise in cargo revenues of 49% to US$ 1.73 billion, the highest figure in the history of the airline.

Tony Douglas, Group Chief Executive Officer, commented: "In another year of global uncertainty, Etihad Airways has continued to move forward, strengthen its business, and build on its world-class travel proposition. As always, this has been thanks to our remarkable people who have gone above and beyond to make the most of every opportunity. Despite the slowdown caused by Omicron, we are confident that the spring and summer season will continue to see a resurgence in travel as more people return to the skies.

“We look forward to our guests being able to experience our state-of-the-art Airbus A350s when they debut later this year, taking pride of place alongside our Boeing 787s. With one of the most fuel-efficient fleets in the world and with sustainability at the very top of our agenda, we will continue to pave the way for more sustainable flying in 2022 and beyond.”

As operations progressively ramped up throughout 2021, Etihad maintained an absolute focus on cost control, decreasing operating costs by a further US$ 110 million, despite a US$ 197 million increase in fuel costs driven by rallying oil prices.

Fixed overhead costs and finance costs also recorded a significant reduction, decreasing by 14% (or US$ 110 million) and 20% (or US$ 90 million) respectively. As a result, the airline managed to maintain strong liquidity in 2021.

Overall, Etihad recorded a core operating loss of US$ 476 million for fiscal year 2021, representing a 72% improvement compared to 2020 (US$ 1.70 billion) and a 41% improvement against pre-pandemic results in 2019 (US$ 802 million). EBITDA improved by more than US$ 1 billion, turning to positive US$ 408 million from a negative US$ 651 million in 2020.

Adam Boukadida, Chief Financial Officer, said: "Despite Covid-19 suppressing global travel demand for a second year running, we have continued to transform Etihad Airways into a more efficient business, delivering additional line-by-line savings and further optimising our cost base. Our record cargo operations have provided much-needed uplift, helping to more than double monthly operating revenue between January and December.

“Pushing the frontiers of sustainable financing, we issued the first-ever sustainability-linked ESG loan in aviation, while at the same time reducing our outstanding debt by more than 20%. All these factors combined resulted in a strong year-end liquidity position, aligned to our pre-pandemic levels, and in a steadfast 'A with a stable outlook' credit rating reaffirmed by Fitch."

Etihad Airways to take seven new generation Airbus A350F freighter jets

Etihad Airways has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) for seven A350F freighters to add to its existing fleet of five A350-1000 passenger versions. The announcement was made at the Singapore Airshow 2022. Etihad has also selected Airbus’s Flight Hour Services (FHS) to support its entire A350 fleet.

“Etihad is delighted to extend our relationship with Airbus to include this remarkable aircraft as part of our freighter fleet for the future,” said Tony Douglas, Group Chief Executive Officer, Etihad Aviation Group. “As our cargo operations continue to overperform and we work towards a more sustainable future built upon the world’s youngest and most fuel-efficient fleet, the addition of the A350F will play a key role in driving our long-term cargo strategy and achieving our 2035 target to reduce CO ₂ emissions by 50%.”

“We are pleased to sign this agreement with our long-standing partner Etihad, shortly before this most discerning airline also introduces A350 passenger service. Thank you, Etihad for endorsing the game-changing nature of the new A350F” said Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International. “The world’s only new generation large freighter will be unmatched in its market segment in terms of range, fuel consumption and CO₂ savings.”

As part of the world’s most modern long-range family, the A350F provides a high level of commonality with the A350 passenger versions. With a 109-tonne payload capability, the A350F can serve all cargo markets. The aircraft features a large main deck cargo door, with its fuselage length and capacity optimised around the industry’s standard pallets and containers.

More than 70% of the airframe of the A350F is made of advanced materials, resulting in a 30 tonne lighter take-off weight and generating at least 20% lower fuel consumption and emissions over its current closest competitor. The A350F fully meets ICAO’s enhanced CO₂ emissions standards coming into effect in 2027. To date, the A350F has won firm orders and commitments for 29 aircraft from 5 customers.

The A350F meets the imminent wave of large freighter replacements and the evolving environmental requirements, shaping the future of air freight. The A350F will be powered by the latest technology, fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines.

Etihad Airways’ Sustainable Flight reduces carbon emissions by 72%

On Saturday 23 October, Etihad Airways operated its most sustainable flight ever, leveraging the learnings and efficiencies developed over the last two years of its comprehensive sustainability programme to reduce carbon emissions (CO2) by 72% in absolute terms compared to the equivalent flight operated in 2019.

The London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi flight is part of the Etihad Greenliner Programme – a two-year partnership between Etihad and Boeing using Etihad’s Boeing 787 fleet as a testbed for sustainability improvements in partnership with organisations across the industry. It required huge collaboration across the aviation ecosystem to deliver a sustainable in-flight product, coordination with airspace management for optimised flight routing, new technology flight deck tools, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), contrail reduction and airport handling processes.

In an industry-first, EY20 was the first commercial flight to explore contrail-avoidance. Working with UK-based SATAVIA, the team identified potential areas of ice supersaturated regions in the atmosphere where harmful contrails are likely to form, and the flight route was adjusted to avoid these areas. Based on the original and adjusted flight plan, the strategy avoided the production of approximately 64 tonnes of CO2e, with a fuel penalty of only 100kg, or 0.48 tonnes CO2.

Etihad Inaugurates Pioneering 2020 ecoDemonstrator aircraft into service

Following the launch of the Etihad Greenliner Program at the 2019 Dubai Airshow, and the arrival of the flagship Greenliner in January 2020, Etihad Airways today officially inaugurated the latest aircraft in its journey towards sustainability, with the pioneering 2020 ecoDemonstrator entering commercial service following a series of industry-leading test flights across the United States. The aircraft, a brand-new Boeing 787-10 registered A6-BMI, is the latest arrival to Etihad’s 39-strong fleet of 787 Dreamliners, making the UAE national airline one of the world’s largest operators of the technologically advanced aircraft type.

2020 ecoDemonstrator enters service after year of sustainability initiatives following launch of Etihad Greenliner Program in November 2019 at The Dubai Airshow
Despite impact of Covid19 on global aviation, Etihad implemented key sustainability initiatives in 2020, including:

August 2020: ecoDemonstrator testing in USA
October 2020: Launch of world’s first Transition Sukuk and the first Sustainability-Linked financing in global aviation, raising USD 800 million to support Etihad’s drive for sustainable aviation by linking terms to Etihad’s carbon reduction targets
December 2020: Commits to purchasing carbon offsets, to completely neutralise the CO2 emissions of its flagship “Greenliner” 787-10 aircraft for a full year of operations in 2021
December 2020: ecoDemonstrator enters service as part of Etihad’s 39-strong fleet of 787 Dreamliners

As the 2020 ecoDemonstrator, in partnership with Boeing, NASA and Safran Landing Systems, Etihad’s 787 Dreamliner was used as a flying testbed to accelerate technological developments with the goal of making commercial aviation safer and more sustainable. A familiar sight in the skies over the American Northwest in recent months, the uniquely branded Dreamliner, kitted out with complex testing equipment, conducted extensive research flying above Montana and between Washington state and South Carolina.
