easyJet launches new Summer Flight School for kids

Airline easyJet has announced it is launching a new Summer Flight School, to combat persistent gendered stereotypes of pilot and cabin crew jobs and inspire more young people to consider a career in aviation.

As new research by the airline reveals around four in ten children (37%) still believe that a pilot is a job exclusively for men, easyJet is inviting children aged 7 – 12 to go behind the scenes at its training centre for hands on training experiences with real easyJet pilots and crew, to challenge these outdated stereotypes.

The first-of-its-kind event by the airline will offer children the opportunity to take the controls of an Airbus A320 flight simulator, learn what it takes to provide the best inflight service to passengers and find out from easyJet pilots and cabin crew about their jobs and how they got there.

easyJet has launched the initiative after a poll of 2,000 British parents and their children found that two thirds (66%) of British parents still believe there are misconceptions that being a pilot is a job for men rather than women and that most parents (86%) believe that gender stereotypes of jobs start at primary school age.

Around three quarters (72%) of female adult respondents said that when they were a child, they believed only men could be pilots, while nearly two thirds of men (63%) said they never considered a role as cabin crew due to their gender.

A fifth of easyJet's fleet is now new-technology A320neo Family aircraft

easyJet’s fleet now consists of more new-technology, more fuel efficient “NEO” - aircraft than ever before – as the operator took delivery of its 67th A320neo Family aircraft this month.

As the airline continues its fleet renewal programme, an integral part of its roadmap to net zero, older Airbus A320ceo Family aircraft will be phased out over time and replaced by new-technology aircraft, which are at least 15% more fuel efficient and see up to 50% noise reduction upon taxiing, take-off and landing.

Based on current delivery plans, A320neo Family aircraft will 25% of its overall fleet by October of next year. easyJet has - 19 A320neo Family deliveries expected by the end of 2024 and a further 27 in 2025.

easyJet has taken delivery of its 67th A320neo Family aircraft this month; making over 20% of the easyJet fleet NEO-technology

A320neo Family aircraft use around 15% less fuel than their equivalent predecessors, and have up to 50% noise reduction at take-off, landing and whilst taxiing

easyJet has an orderbook for a further 164 A320neo Family aircraft, in addition to the 67 already delivered

By October 2024, the fleet is expected to pass 25% new-technology aircraft

David Morgan, Chief Operating Officer at easyJet commented:   “The adoption of more efficient technology is the single biggest contributor to reducing emissions in the short term and the roll-out of new neo aircraft is a key part of this.

We are also continuously looking at our operation each and every day to drive efficiencies which has been demonstrated with the addition of Descent Profile Optimisation (DPO) and Continuous Descent Approach (CDA) – a state of software from Airbus that is being retrofitted on all our aircraft. The two technologies will respectively enable fuel-saving enhancement to the aircraft’s on-board Flight Management System (FMS) and reduce noise impact on the ground.”

Wouter Van Wersch, Airbus President Europe Region & Sales, added:  “As we continue to fulfil easyJet's orders, each A320neo delivery future-proofs the airline's growth as traffic rebounds. Airbus is delighted that the A320neo family aircraft, together with our strong service offering, is laying the foundation of easyJet's decarbonisation journey which is already well underway.”

easyJet is the world’s largest operator of Airbus’ single-aisle aircraft with over 300 planes currently in service, including the A319, A320ceo, A320neo and A321neo. The airline serves over 130 European airports in some 31 countries operating over 1,000 routes.

Wildfires in Rhodes prompt evacuation flights for troubled tourists

The horrendous wildfires on the Greek islands have left scores and scores of tourists needing to be evacuated from the affected areas, with Rhodes being particularly badly hit.

Some of the leading UK holiday airlines are adding extra services to the islands to bring people home early.

Jet2 has cancelled all flights and holidays going to Rhodes for at least seven days. The company is operating five empty aircraft to the island over the next few hours to bring people back.

Tui has cancelled all its flights to the island until Wednesday, however, it advises that customers currently in Rhodes will only be able to return on their intended flights home

easyJet has said it intends to operate two rescue flights today, with another tomorrow in addition to its normal nine scheduled flights between Rhodes and the UK

British Airways said its flights to Rhodes were running as normal, but passengers are able to postpone and / or change their flights free of charge.

Thomas Cook has axed some holidays to affected areas and offered a refund to those customers. Customers with packages booked this week to other areas of Rhodes will be offered the option to either continue with plans or cancel and get a refund.

Ryanair is operating flights as per normal schedule, yet is monitoring the situation carefully.

Corfu is beginning an evacuation, with almost 2500 people moved to safety overnight and more will be moved today according to local firefighters.

Local news agency ANA-MPA has reported that parts of the island of Evia have also been or are in the process of being evacuated. Residents in Livadi, Potami, Pernaraki and Platanisto - have been told to evacuate for precautionary measures and move towards the area of Karystos.

easyJet launches summer onboard collection to support UNICEF’s education appeal

Customers flying during summer can now help easyJet raise vital funds towards UNICEF’s education appeal to ensure every child has the right to learn.
easyJet customers have already raised almost £17 million towards UNICEF appeals including a record-breaking £616,000 in a single month for the Ukraine response in 2022
easyJet’s cabin crew are collecting donations onboard all flights now until 2nd September 2023

easyJet launched its summer onboard collection to help raise vital funds to support UNICEF’s education appeal and ensure every child has the right to learn. Customers flying during the next seven weeks will be able to donate onboard.

Education is a human right, but still seven out of ten children globally cannot read or write by the age of ten and for out-of-school children, these basic skills are even further from reach.  The learning crisis will affect children’s health, prospects and earning potential and will impact on societies and economies for generations to come. UNICEF is working around the clock to protect children’s right to learn and easyJet customers’ support goes a long way.

easyJet’s customers can help UNICEF and its partners to ensure that children everywhere are able to access school, to keep learning and gaining the skills they need to succeed in life.  With over 600 million children and adolescents worldwide unable to attain basic reading and mathematics skills, and two third’s of the world’s school-aged children without internet connection at home to support their learning, there is a significant challenge ahead which requires innovation, investment and the support of global communities.

easyJet pulls 1,700 flights from summer schedule.

The UK's leading budget carrier, easyJet has confirmed it has pulled 1,700 flights from its summer travel schedule citing constrained congested air space over Europe, air traffic control industrial action and staff shortages.

easyJet has cancelled flights to and from London Gatwick during July, August and September and said that around 95% of those passengers affected had already been reaccommodated on other flights

The budget carrier said the number of cancellations roughly represents one day's worth of flights and it will still operate about 90,000 flights during the same period.

A spokesperson for the airline said: "We have therefore made some pre-emptive adjustments to our programme consolidating a small number of flights at Gatwick, where we have multiple daily frequencies, in order to help mitigate these external challenges on the day of travel for our customers.  -  Customers whose flights are affected are being informed, with 95% of customers being rebooked onto an alternative flight and all customers provided with the option to rebook or receive a refund."

AirFi completes deployment of portable streaming solution across easyJet’s entire fleet

Following the successful rollout to easyJet’s EU and Swiss fleets, inflight technology provider AirFi has confirmed the further deployment of its revolutionary portable streaming solution across the remainder of the airline’s fleet.

In October 2022, the airline trialled AirFi’s technology onboard as part of an ongoing campaign to deliver an industry-leading digital onboard experience to its customers across Europe. Having deemed the initial trial to be a success, the airline later equipped an additional 108 aircraft and has now deployed the AirFi streaming technology across all 327 aircraft. The inflight system powers a customised wireless engagement portal enabling passengers to access games, journey-specific content and airline information, plus browse inflight retail offerings using their own mobile phones, tablet or laptops.

To access the content, passengers simply connect to a local Wi-Fi network created onboard by AirFi’s flexible and powerful hardware solution. Aircraft do not need to be taken out of service for this digital upgrade. Access to the content is free, and there is no requirement for passengers to download an app before the flight or share personal information to get connected.

easyJet opens applications for its 2023 Generation easyJet Pilot Training Programme

This World Pilot’s Day, Europe's leading airline easyJet has announced that it has reopened its renowned Generation easyJet Pilot Training programme for the 2023 intake of approximately 200 aspiring pilots.

easyJet is searching for the next generation of pilots and recruitment is now open for 200 cadets to join its pilot training programme

The airline has ambitious plans for 1000 new pilots in total to train with and join the airline by 2027

The Generation easyJet Pilot Training Programme is delivered in partnership with CAE and provides aspiring airline pilots the highest standards of training to become qualified commercial airline pilots in around two years. Ground training is delivered at CAE’s European aviation academy locations in Gatwick, Milan, Brussels, or Madrid, and flight training at CAE Phoenix in the US. Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates begin their careers flying as a Second Officer with easyJet.

A cohort of cadet pilots selected when the programme re-opened in January 2022 is already in training. Applications are now being accepted for programmes beginning as of December 2023 and graduating as of 2026.

Over the next five years, over 1000 new pilots are expected to join easyJet. The airline continues to encourage those from diverse backgrounds, including having a focus on driving more female pilots to apply, as part of its commitment to increasing diversity in all forms across the airline and continue to create an inclusive culture for all.

easyJet has pledged its support for CAE Women in Flight, providing one European candidate access to their first employment opportunity. CAE funds and provides pilot training for the successful candidate at one of CAE’s aviation academies. The successful recipient becomes a CAE Women in Flight ambassador, encouraging more girls and women to consider a career in aviation by dreaming big and having no limits.
