Diverse Egypt: An award-winning and safe travel destination with many new offers

The country, recognised by the Lonely Planet as the destination with the best value for money, is expecting a record number of visitors in 2023. To continue this trend next year, further openings of new historic sites and resorts are planned.

-Unforgettable adventures, exciting experiences, and warm sunshine: the award-winning holiday hotspot of Egypt offers something for all travellers this winter. While the winter chill is setting in and the world is eagerly looking forward to the holiday season, the country on the Nile is proving to be a fascinating and affordable destination for a winter holiday in the sun.

Unique Experiences and Adventures

In a time when travel is not just about the destination but the experiences that come with it, the land of pharaohs, pyramids, and the lush River Nile delta stands tall as a destination worth exploring, whether travellers are seeking immersive urban experiences in Cairo and Alexandria, personalised river cruises, unique desert adventures or some of the world’s best snorkelling and scuba diving sites in the Red Sea.

"Tourism has changed in recent years. More and more travellers are coming to Egypt because the country offers them diverse and unique experiences and they feel safe here. Our endeavour is to offer every guest a trip that allows them to relax and unwind as well as get to know our rich culture," says Ahmed Issa, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities. "Last year we saw an influx of visitors during the cold months, and we expect millions of travellers to come again this year to escape the winter."

Significant Investments in Popular Tourist Spots

Significant investments have been made in Egyptian destinations, including restoring and developing archaeological sites and opening new museums and hotels. Highlights include the Graeco-Roman Museum reopening in Alexandria, the restoration of the Great Hypostyle Hall in the Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings, and the new Grand Egyptian Museum opening in early 2024 near Cairo.

Sustainability Is Becoming Increasingly Important

With an increasing focus on sustainability, Egypt offers plenty of opportunities for those looking for eco-friendly ways to connect with nature, cultural and historical heritage and people. For example, many tour operators offer packages that include stays in eco-friendly accommodation and support local businesses. The country is also home to a number of eco-lodges, including Eco Nubia on the once-deserted island of Bigeh, which has become an internationally renowned attraction and recognized by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation.

That's not all, as destinations such as Cairo and various resorts along the Red Sea coast between El Gouna and Marsa Alam are also involved in environmental certification programmes. Sharm el-Sheikh was even recently recognised as the best sustainable tourist city by the Arab Union for Tourism Media (AUTM).

A Record Year for Tourism

According to Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, more than seven million tourists visited Egypt during the first half of 2023. The country, which features as a Best Value Destination on the newly released Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2024 list, is on target to attract 15 million tourists this year. Another important reason for this: even in times like these, Egypt is known as one of the safest travel destinations in the world.

Helsinki is the fourth most sustainable travel destination in the world

The results of the latest Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Index, which ranks the sustainability of tourist destinations, were published on 4 October 2023. In the latest index, Helsinki has climbed eight places and is now ranked the fourth most sustainable tourist destination in the world.

Helsinki's target is to be carbon neutral by 2030. The city’s sustainability goals cover all sectors, from construction to the travel industry and events. In the tourism sector, the city’s sustainability work has focused on developing inclusive tourism and encouraging stronger participation by city residents in the development of tourism. In addition, the City of Helsinki measures the carbon footprint of tourism, promotes the measures of the Helsinki Tourism Climate Road Map and supports the travel industry along the path of sustainable tourism.

Helsinki’s sustainability work and increased focus on the development of tourism is clearly visible in the improved ranking of Helsinki on the Global Destination Sustainability Index, which has climbed from 16th to 4th place in two years. The Global Destination Sustainability Index measures the sustainability of tourist destinations in four different categories using 70 indicators. Helsinki has been ranked in the index since it began in 2015.

Also, other Nordic cities performed excellently in this year’s index, as no less than seven top places went to the Nordic countries. The world’s most sustainable tourist destination in 2023 is Gothenburg in Sweden, which retained its first place from last year. Other cities in the top seven include Oslo, Copenhagen, Bergen, Aarhus and Aalborg.

Helsinki’s aim is to be the smartest and most sustainable travel destination in the world

The aim of the Helsinki City Strategy is to develop Helsinki into the smartest and most sustainable travel destination in the world. Helsinki’s Climate Action Plan for Tourism and Events also outlines Helsinki's goal of being at the top of the world in terms of sustainability, as verified by indexes and certifications. Helsinki's goal is to climb to the top of the GDS Index by 2025. The City of Helsinki is also keen to work closely with other travel destinations on a national and international level.

Nina Vesterinen, Tourism Director at the City of Helsinki, is satisfied with the results that have just been published.  “One of Helsinki's main goals in the development of tourism is to become the world’s most sustainable travel destination. The fact that our ranking rose by eight places from last year is a sign that we are doing the right things. Our goal to be the world’s most sustainable travel destination is already within reach. For this, we owe big thanks to all our stakeholders – above all to those companies that are pioneers in sustainability,” says Vesterinen.

An exciting new art trail is live in Jersey

A new colourful experience in Jersey

50 colourful, inspiring and thrilling tortoise sculptures have taken over Jersey’s wild places, coastal vistas and urban hangouts. So whether you’re a local or just visiting, the Tortoise Takeover provides a fun and engaging way to explore this beautiful island.

Durrell is synonymous with Jersey and the community and the airline Blue Island have joined together in supporting this unique art trail.

Discover Durrell's Tortoise Takeover in Jersey until 31 August, with Blue Island flights from many UK airports. Explore the island and find the 50 giant ones and even the 65 young ones as well.

Why did they pick the Tortoise for the special takeover?  Well, from Greek mythology to Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot, tortoises have, throughout history, plodded their way into storytelling across the globe.

The tortoise is perhaps best known as the eventual victor in Aesop’s well-known fable “The Tortoise and The Hare”, establishing these charismatic reptiles as a metaphor of persistent diligence over the excessively confident hare.   In China, the sacred tortoise symbolises longevity, power, and tenacity, and in Ancient Greek mythology, the tortoise is the symbol of the “messenger” god, Hermes.

Perhaps they also serve a key purpose in the busy modern world, that we should take some time to, well,  go slow,  to enjoy what is going on around us,  to connect with the here and now and not worry too much about tomorrow.  To take your eyes off the rectangular screen and look at whats around you.

From the Galápagos tortoises at Jersey Zoo, to the Aldabra giant tortoises that serve as “ecosystem engineers” on Round Island in Mauritius and the precious, golden-domed ploughshare from Madagascar, Durrell has worked with tortoises for decades. Sadly, chelonians, which include tortoises, turtles and terrapins, are now the most threatened vertebrate group and need our help more than ever.

The Reptile and Amphibian House at Jersey Zoo is home to some of the most endangered species that Durrell works with, but it is in urgent need of improved and more sustainable facilities.

The Empire State Building Observatory named number 1 attraction in the U.S.......

The Empire State Building has been named as the number one attraction on the list of Top Attractions in the U.S. for the second consecutive year, plus it was also the fifth worldwide attraction in Tripadvisor’s 2023 Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best.

“We are thrilled for our frontline and management teams who have earned this recognition and once again thank the creative minds behind our $165 million masterpiece of exhibits and improvements at the Empire State Building Observatory. The Empire State Building is the authentic, must-visit attraction in New York City,” said Tony Malkin, chairman, president, and CEO at Empire State Realty Trust. “Our valued guests placed ESB in the top spot for two consecutive years and we are grateful for their recognition without which this is not possible”

The Empire State Building Observatory Experience recently underwent a $165 million, top-to-bottom reimagination that added a dedicated guest entrance, an immersive museum that celebrates the icon from the moment it was conceived to its current place in pop culture, and a completely reimagined 102nd Floor Observatory with unmatched, 360-degree views.

“Congratulations to the 2023 Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best winners,” said John Boris, chief growth officer at Tripadvisor. “The travel resurgence we’ve seen throughout the past year has even further heightened the competition. Ranking among the Best of the Best demonstrates that you have provided exemplary experiences to those who matter most: your guests. With changing expectations, continued labour shortages, and rising costs, this is no easy feat, and I am continually impressed with the hospitality industry’s resilience and ability to adapt. Cheers to another successful year!”

Machu picchu is the backdrop of the colossal battle in Transformers: "Rise of the Beasts"

The premiere of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts has been a success. The mega-production shot in Peru includes the most beautiful and ancient landscapes of the Cusco (Machupicchu) and San Martin (Tarapoto) regions. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer of the film, confessed: "I've always wanted to go to Machupicchu. It was one of the biggest desires in life and the great thing about Transformers is that it enables you to go to these wonderful places. The Peruvian culture and the jungle are incredible."

Peru's welcome during the shoot, in the midst of the pandemic, was appreciated by director Steven Caple Jr, who chose Cusco to introduce the Maximals, a new race of robots: "Peru is one of the most beautiful places on the planet, the team and the people are wonderful. Viewers will enjoy the culture, the history. Go there, shoot there, but also be present and enjoy the moment, it's one of the most magical places in the world."

Dominique Fishback highlighted the energy and mysticism of Cusco: "A shaman came to bless the land. It was an incredible experience." Anthony Ramos added: "Peru is the protagonist of the movie, the festival, the people, their costumes, art, you just feel it," referring to the Inti Raymi festival recreated in the film, featuring 800 extras.

Hong Kong's best harbourside activities to beat the summer heat

The iconic Victoria Harbour turns up the heat this summer as it hosts an array of incredible things to eat, see, do, and capture in photos right by the water.

Must-See Spectacle: The Giant Rubber Duck Returns With A Friend

Summer in Hong Kong will see a diverse range of events come to the city, and the season is starting in an eye-catching fashion. In 2013, Victoria Harbour was home to Rubber Duck, a large-scale inflatable sculpture created by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman and curated by Hong Kong creative collective AllRightsReserved, which became a symbol of summertime playfulness. This summer, the 18-metre-tall rubber duck returns for a two-week stay and it is being joined by an identical friend. DOUBLE DUCKS by Florentijn Hofman, organised by AllRightsReserved, will see two rubber ducks take pride of place in Victoria Harbour from 10–23 June.

Must-Join Events: Traditional Festivals with Modern Twist and Live Entertainment

Traditional Festivals with a Modern Twist

An iconic Hong Kong summer tradition, the Dragon Boat Festival this year takes place on 22 June. Race meets on that day can be found citywide including at Stanley, where over 200 local and international teams compete in a series of races – with many paddlers in colourful costumes – amid a vibrant, carnival-like atmosphere.

The excitement continues to the weekend of 24–25 June with the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races, featuring over 160 teams from 10 countries and regions of about 4,000 best racers around the world paddling through Victoria Harbour cheered on by drummers and fans. Fans watching from the Avenue of Stars will be able to stop by the LINE FRIENDS Hello Hong Kong Dragon Boats Photo Spots. From 19 June for two weeks, this playful display invites visitors to stop by to pick up an exclusive souvenir and take a selfie with their favourite LINE FRIENDS characters in a dragon boat-themed exhibit.

Live entertainment lights up the harbourside

Summer is the perfect time for live outdoor entertainment, and Hong Kong has plenty on offer this season. Over five consecutive weekends from 8 July, the Wan Chai harbourfront welcomes the first-ever Harbour Chill Carnival. Organised by Hong Kong Tourism Board, this family-friendly event features live music performances from on a stage on the water, performing arts showcases, and exhilarating X Games demonstrations. Stay until sundown for a special edition of “A Symphony of Lights” multimedia light and pyro show that illuminates the Hong Kong skyline.

The party comes to Discovery Bay on 29-30 July for NextWave. Hong Kong's first-ever beach carnival features an array of live performances and DJ sets by local and international artists, as well as food trucks, artisan markets and water sports.

The action returns to Central Harbourfront on 5–6 August for the S2O Hong Kong Songkran Music Festival, which brings the energy of Thailand’s famed New Year celebrations to the city for the very first time. Expect a top-tier line-up of DJs and thrilling water and light spectacles, accompanied by stunning visual effects and a 360-degree water splashing experience.

British Airways flies to Cincinnati

British Airways has launched a new route between London Heathrow and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) with the inaugural flight taking place on June 5th, 2023.

The Ohio city becomes the 27th American destination served by British Airways and will help to open up a new vibrant region of the U.S. for UK travellers.  The service between Cincinnati and London operates five times weekly during the summer season which will reduce to four times a week during the winter period. The flights will be flown by various aircraft in the British Airway fleet including the Boeing 777 and Boeing 787.

The central Cincinnati metropolitan area – straddling the Ohio River – is spread across southwestern Ohio, northern Kentucky and extends into portions of southeastern Indiana. There are more than 11 million people within a 120-mile radius of Cincinnati’s airport, which BA hopes will utilize the route to connect via Heathrow to its vast short and medium-haul route network as well as those seeking to visit the UK.

Neil Chernoff, British Airways Director of Networks and Alliances said:  "When we look at the Cincinnati region we see a vibrant part of the U.S. with a great mix of business and leisure travellers who have long asked for more international service and global connectivity, which is what made it so attractive to us and why we’re confident this new route will be a success. Our incredibly positive and welcoming conversations with the airport team, the business development community and tourism partners – combined with all the region has to offer visitors from outside the U.S. – were a clear sign that Cincinnati was the right place to expand our flying in America."

Candace McGraw, Chief Executive Officer, CVG Airport, said: "We are thrilled this day has come when CVG has non-stop service to and from London Heathrow. This flight offers tremendous growth opportunities for business travel, economic development, and tourism between the UK and our region. We are grateful to our partners in Ohio and Kentucky who have supported this flight that will benefit travellers for years to come. I offer a personal thanks to our new friends at British Airways for this opportunity."

Cincinnati, or Cincy as its affectionately abbreviated to, is the place where Midwest friendliness is said to meet with Southern charm. A destination that has a vibrant urban setting opening up to many green spaces and waterways. A fine art scene as well as a rich culture and top-quality food.

Speaking of food, the Cincinnati region is famous for its Chili where it is done slightly differently. In place of chunks of meat and sizeable beans, you’ll get savoury soupiness and creative accoutrements like spaghetti or hot dogs. In place of an overtly tomato-based sauce, in Cincy you’ll taste hints of cinnamon, cloves, allspice and or even chocolate.

According to Visit Cincy  some of the best places to sample chilli include:

Blue Ash Chili
9525 Kenwood Rd, Suite 5  or 11711 Princeton Pike

Camp Washington Chili
3005 Colerain Avenue

Gold Star Chili chain of stores.
Various locations.  Also offers a nice veggie menu that is made in small batches using a plant-based BEYOND MEAT product and is gluten-free.

Lucky Dog OTR
1210 Main St.
Fast food place that offers a lot of hot dog / coney-based meals and nice double deckers which are well-filled sandwiches.

Skyline Chili chain of stores
Various locations.  Fast food for a quick bite that is tasty and reasonably cheap.

Fine dining in the area....

20 Brix
101 Main St. Milford
This is a popular wine bar and restaurant in historic downtown Milford has a quality menu and a big wine list. The signature crab cake and pan-roasted salmon are said to be must trys!

Boca
114 E. 6th St.,
This is said to be a reimagined dining experience where timeless technique & modern decadence come together to delight your culinary curiosity. It may seem a little expensive at first, but the quality is first-class and has a European feel.

Bouquet Restaurant & Wine Bar
519 Main St.,Covington.

A friendly bistro that embraces local and sustainable farming methods that populate its menu.  Try the saffron risotto which includes asparagus, peas, mushrooms and parmesan which will tickle the tastebuds or share a board for something a little lighter. It may look small,  but it has an upstairs as well!  Top quality wine list and if you are hungover or tired out, then why not try the alcohol-free 'Painkiller' cocktail
