Philippine Airlines and American Airlines launch new codeshare partnership

Travellers gain seamless connections between the Philippines and the United States

Philippine Airlines and American Airlines have launched a codeshare partnership that introduces the first marketed flights by a Philippine carrier to several U.S. destinations and allows American’s customers to travel to the Pearl of the Orient, Manila, and the beautiful beaches of Cebu.

American’s customers are now able to book tickets on aa.com for codeshare flights operated by Philippine Airlines to Manila and Cebu via Tokyo. Additionally, customers will be able to fly to Manila from Honolulu and Guam.

“We are excited to partner with Philippine Airlines, which will provide our customers seamless connections to Manila, the capital and economic hub of the region, and Cebu, the gateway to countless tropical islands with pristine beaches,” said Anmol Bhargava, American’s Vice President of Global Alliances and Partnerships. “The Philippines is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia, and we look forward to continuing to enhance our partnership with Philippine Airlines.”

Philippine Airlines has placed its “PR” code on American’s flights between Los Angeles and seven U.S. cities: Atlanta, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando and Washington, D.C., enabling excellent connectivity with PAL’s trans-Pacific service.

American plans expansion of high-speed Wi-Fi to nearly 500 regional aircraft

American is making high-speed connectivity available on more aircraft than any other domestic US airline. Over the next two years, the airline intends to help even more customers have a consistent and connected inflight experience through the forthcoming introduction of high-speed Wi-Fi on the dual-class regional aircraft operated on its behalf. American is working to extend its relationship with Intelsat with the plan to install new high-speed Wi-Fi capability on nearly 500 regional aircraft beginning next year.

  • American currently makes high-speed connectivity available on 900 aircraft across its fleet – the most in the industry.
  • Beginning in 2024, the carrier intends to continue that lead by bringing the availability of high-speed internet connectivity to nearly 500 dual-class regional aircraft.
  • Earlier this year, American became the first airline to offer streaming capability on 100% of its mainline fleet, for customers to watch video content from their favorite streaming platform, and this expanded relationship with Intelsat will take streaming capabilities to new heights.

American currently makes high-speed Wi-Fi available on more than 900 mainline aircraft, with the objective to bring the total number of satellite-connected aircraft to more than 1,400 once the planned updates to regional aircraft are complete.

Inflight connectivity technology continues to evolve rapidly across the airline industry. Intelsat’s Electronically Steered Array (ESA) antennae is unique because it is multi-orbit, interoperating on both Intelsat’s family of geo-stationary satellites and on a constellation of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, providing low latency high-speed internet connection to American’s customers.

This new technology will allow these regional aircraft to match fast Wi-Fi speeds that are currently available on American’s mainline aircraft. With the planned purchase of this new technology, American is reinforcing its commitment to provide a consistent and connected experience for customers on all of American’s connectivity-equipped flights with the ability to stream, browse, check email and even log onto VPN while inflight.

eFuels leader Infinium receives $75 million equity commitment from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst for investment in Project Roadrunner

The investment will enable the availability of SAF under an innovative fuel offtake agreement with American Airlines, with financial support from Citi

Infinium and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst announced this week, a $75 million project equity investment commitment to support Infinium’s Project Roadrunner, subject to the satisfaction of certain closing conditions. Project Roadrunner will convert waste carbon dioxide (CO2) and renewable power into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other low-carbon fuels. This first-of-a-kind commercial-scale Power-to-Liquids (PtL) eFuels facility is expected to be the largest PtL eFuels project in North America once operational. Breakthrough Energy Catalyst funds and invests in first-of-a-kind projects that support the deployment of emerging climate technologies to reduce emissions and accelerate the clean energy transition. This commitment represents Catalyst’s first equity investment to date.

Project Roadrunner, located in West Texas, will convert an existing brownfield gas-to-liquids project into a fully integrated eFuels facility that will deliver products into both U.S. and international markets. It will primarily produce Infinium eSAF, a sustainable aviation fuel with the potential to significantly reduce the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) associated with air travel. PtL SAF is expected to reduce lifecycle GHG emissions in aviation by around 90 percent, which is higher than the emissions reductions achieved using SAF on the market today. Project Roadrunner will also produce Infinium eNaphtha for use in plastics manufacturing and Infinium eDiesel for use in hard-to-electrify transportation methods, such as long-haul trucking and maritime applications.

Graphyte signs first carbon removal purchase agreement with American Airlines

10,000 tons of carbon dioxide removal will be delivered using new Carbon Casting technology

Graphyte, a carbon removal startup backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, today announced that American Airlines will be its inaugural customer, with the purchase of 10,000 tons of permanent carbon removal to be delivered in early 2025.

Graphyte’s Carbon Casting process leverages readily available biomass, efficient processing and state-of-the-art monitoring to make carbon dioxide (CO2) removal quantifiable and permanent.  Relative to existing carbon removal approaches, Carbon Casting permanently removes and stores CO2 using significantly less energy and at a substantially lower cost.

“This is a landmark agreement for both Graphyte and American Airlines,” said Barclay Rogers, CEO of Graphyte. “It demonstrates the growing demand for affordable and scalable high-quality carbon removal credits and the ability of Carbon Casting technology to make a significant impact in the fight against climate change in the very near term.”

American has a long-term goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, and is investing in a variety of technologies to reduce its carbon footprint. While American’s focus is to reduce emissions within its operations — for example, through the purchase of more efficient aircraft and low carbon sustainable aviation fuel — it recognizes that carbon credits will play a critical role in eliminating aviation’s residual emissions. With its purchase of carbon removal credits from Graphyte, American aims to accelerate and scale the CO2 removal market.

“American is focused on accelerating new low-carbon technologies to reduce aviation’s climate impact,” said Jill Blickstein, Chief Sustainability Officer at American. “Hard to abate industries like aviation will need high-quality, permanent, affordable and scalable carbon credits — including removals — to achieve our emissions reduction goals. We are excited to work with Graphyte to help them scale their important new technology.”

This first commercial-scale deployment of Carbon Casting will take place at a Graphyte facility in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, which sits at an intersection of major agricultural and timber production areas. Carbon Casting leverages readily available biomass byproducts, including crop and wood residues, that have already captured significant CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. The biomass is then dried to prevent decomposition, converted into dense carbon blocks, wrapped in an environmentally safe polymer barrier, and monitored in a state-of-the-art underground storage facility.

American Airlines celebrates record-breaking Thanksgiving operation.

American Airlines produced a record-setting Thanksgiving operation for the airline — including getting more customers than ever to their Thanksgiving tables while cancelling fewer flights to date than any other Thanksgiving in its history.

”Millions of customers were counting on us to connect them with their families, friends and loved ones this Thanksgiving — and we delivered,” said David Seymour, American’s Chief Operating Officer. “The trust our customers place in us every day, but especially during the holidays, is something we don’t take for granted, and I could not be prouder of the team for delivering a safe, reliable and successful operation this Thanksgiving. We look forward to carrying this momentum into the December holidays.”

American’s Thanksgiving operational highlights

  • American has welcomed nearly 6.5 million customers on more than 59,000 flights so far this Thanksgiving holiday, with our highest-ever load factor for these dates. Our travel period concludes at the end of the day tomorrow.
  • To date, American has canceled fewer flights than any other Thanksgiving period in its history. From Nov. 16–26, the airline has canceled only 55 out of more than 59,400 scheduled flights — just 0.09% of our schedule, with nearly all the cancellations weather-related.
  • American went nine days (Nov. 16–24) without canceling a single mainline flight.
  • Our Chicago O’Hare (ORD) operation ran smoothly yesterday despite the snowstorm, with no cancellations associated with the hub.
  • These results are thanks to American’s 130,000 team members who worked safely and tirelessly over the holiday period, along with great support from our partners at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

American Airlines unveils new international routes to enhance 2024 travels

American Airlines continues to build a network like no other with more nonstop international operations in 2024. Get ready to explore ancient ruins, mystical cenotes, diverse landscapes and white-sand beaches with new service to Tulum, Mexico (TQO), launching next spring. Separately, American has submitted an application to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to become the only U.S. carrier flying nonstop between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Tokyo's Haneda Airport (HND).

“American continues to enhance our comprehensive global network with more nonstops to destinations our customers want to visit,” said Brian Znotins, American's Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning. “With more flights to Tulum from the U.S. than any other airline, American will offer convenient nationwide connectivity to this popular vacation gem on the Riviera Maya.”

American applies to connect sister cities

American has submitted an application to the DOT to offer daytime service between JFK and HND. Pending approval, American's new service will operate year-round with one daily frequency. The new flight will complement existing frequencies operated by American's partner, Japan Airlines, providing more convenient arrival and departure times in New York City and optimal connections across Japan and Asia with one stop in Tokyo. American's application is the only accretive service between the United States and Japan proposed by a U.S. carrier.

“American looks forward to presenting our competitive application to provide new and enhanced service to Tokyo's convenient Haneda Airport,” said Molly Wilkinson, American's Vice President of Regulatory and International Government Affairs. “This will be the only nonstop service from JFK to Tokyo operated by a U.S. airline. Joining American's existing flights from Dallas-Fort Worth and Los Angeles, JFK to Tokyo service adds an East Coast gateway for flights to Haneda, while offering the largest metropolitan area in the U.S. more options for travel to one of the most important business hubs in the world.”

American Airlines gets ready for a busy Thanksgiving holiday period.

American Airlines expects to welcome more than 7.8 million customers — a record for the airline — during the Thanksgiving travel period, which runs from Nov. 16 to Nov. 28. This holiday travel period will be the airline’s busiest ever and comes as American has been running the most reliable operation of any U.S. network carrier for the past 14 months. That includes the summer 2023 travel period, when American led its major network competitors in completion factor and on-time departures.

“We are running the best operation in our airline’s history,” said David Seymour, American’s Chief Operating Officer. “As our customers travel to spend time with their friends and loved ones this Thanksgiving, we look forward to continuing to deliver a safe and reliable operation they can count on, and that’s thanks to the hard work of our more than 130,000 team members.”

A track record of strong operational performance

Heading into the holiday season, American has been running an industry-leading operation, serving the most customers with the industry’s largest flight schedule. Key to American’s success has been the team’s ability to get the airline’s operation back on track when weather or other conditions impact operations. During severe weather and other disruptions, American has been recovering faster than its competition, minimizing impact to the airline’s customers. That was especially true this summer despite a significant uptick in severe weather, which took place during 70% of the peak summer schedule. In that same period, American led its major network competitors in completion factor and on-time departures.

Leaning into operational technology

American’s operation is also benefiting from years of planning and investment in decision-support and machine-learning tools that ensure the airline can get customers on their way faster. These tools include our Hub Efficiency Analytics Tool (HEAT), which enables American to adjust our operation around severe weather and smart gating, which reduces taxi times at our largest hubs.

American Airlines and CR Smith Museum launch aviation education program bridging the classroom and the industry..

American Airlines and the CR Smith Museum are teaming up to introduce a new education program to inspire the next generation of aviation professionals. The multi-year Aviation Career Pathways program is designed for middle and high school students and provides access to aviation STEM education and exposure to industry career opportunities. The program will initially engage students in seventh to 12th grade at multiple schools in the Dallas Independent School District. It has room to grow to other schools in Dallas-Fort Worth and beyond long-term.

Multiple touch points translate science, technology, engineering and math concepts to aviation careers

Increasing students’ exposure and confidence to aviation STEM careers and skills comes with challenges, especially when working with schools in underserved communities, and most of the schools participating in Aviation Career Pathways are Title 1 schools. The CR Smith Museum, an independent nonprofit organization located on American’s campus in Fort Worth, has extensively studied these challenges and put solutions to them at the centre of its education program development in recent years.

“The challenges we see in research and hear from school leaders are threefold. First, one touchpoint isn’t enough. Second, opportunities need to be more than a presentation. And finally, transportation at schools in underserved communities is limited,” said Marie Eve Poirier-Harris, Education Director at the CR Smith Museum. “Aviation Career Pathways brings the programming to the classroom, provides multiple touch points that include hands-on experiences and goes beyond presentations to creating connections with professionals.”

To help students build confidence toward future aviation career opportunities, students will engage in four to seven touch points with hands-on experiences that expose them to real-life scenarios. Touchpoints will range from in-classroom engagements to participation in the CR Smith Museum’s annual Aviation Career Day. Additionally, students will connect with American Airlines team members who faced similar life stories and can help guide students on their journey to an aviation career.

Team members provide relatable pathways that inspire students to believe in the possibilities
About 15 of American’s team members volunteer to coordinate and execute the Aviation Career Pathways program. Karon Washington, an engineer, partners on curriculum development and leads team member volunteer outreach that is instrumental to the program’s operation. Karon and other volunteers have stories of their own that relate to students’ circumstances and provide solutions to hurdles they may face.

American will add seven new routes next summer to coastal destinations in New England and Nova Scotia

American will also launch service on two additional international routes next summer

Hyannis, Massachusetts, will join the largest global network of any U.S. airline starting next June

“American continues to build a network that gives customers the most comprehensive access to the places they want to visit with nine new routes for next summer,” said Brian Znotins, American's Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning. “New service to Hyannis, expanded service from New York, and more international service grows the largest global network in the United States, connecting more cities than any other U.S. carrier, for a summer like no other.”

Flights to Hyannis will be available for purchase starting Oct. 23 on aa.com or American’s mobile app. Tickets for other routes will be available for purchase starting Oct. 16 on aa.com or American’s mobile app.

New routes to the Northeastern coast

Starting June 5, 2024, American will add service for the first time ever to Hyannis, Massachusetts (HYA), with new daily service from LGA and Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA). American will be the only global network carrier serving the airport, connecting more than 80 destinations across North America with one stop to the gateway to Cape Cod.

In addition, American will also add service to five cities along the Northeastern coast from LGA, including operating the only service from the airport to Halifax, Canada (YHZ).

Connecting coastal New England to the world

Next summer, American will offer more than 20 daily departures from Maine to six gateways across the U.S. With one-stop connections to more than 200 destinations around the world, American will offer the best network and schedule for customers to easily visit Maine's rugged coastline, delight in local lobster and explore natural landscapes.

American is the only U.S. airline flying to Nova Scotia, providing access to the Bay of Fundy and the iconic Peggy's Cove. For off-the-beaten-path destinations, Nova Scotia is home to Acadian Skies and Mi'kmaq Lands, a starlight reserve offering a glimpse into our universe unlike any other.

American enhances global network for more ways to see the world

American is already offering more ways for customers to plan new summer fun for next year, with two more international routes joining more than 45 new routes announced this year. Starting on June 5, 2024, a new service from Charlotte (CLT) to Vancouver, Canada (YVR), will launch for the first time, offering the only nonstop service between North Carolina and British Columbia. Resuming service for the first time since 2019, American will begin nonstop flights between DCA and Bermuda (BDA) on April 4, 2024, adding a fifth gateway on the largest network of any U.S. airline flying to BDA.

For customers looking to add a new stamp in their passport next year, American is gearing up to launch service to new destinations in Europe. In August, American announced new summer 2024 service to Copenhagen, Denmark (CPH); Naples, Italy (NAP); and Nice, France (NCE), providing access to unforgettable memories via gateways to the iconic Nyhavn harbour, the picturesque Amalfi Coast and the glitz of the French Riviera.

Lets take a peek in the new American Airlines catering facility at DFW

American Airlines opened a $100 million catering facility to serve its hub at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). The 214,000-square-foot building is the largest airline catering kitchen in the country and is more than three times the size of a football field. The high-tech design allows American to cater flights more efficiently while enhancing the airline's ability to deliver a memorable onboard dining experience to customers.

“From the moment a customer steps into one of our airport lobbies to when they are relaxing with a refreshment at 35,000 feet, we're always thinking of ways to make their journey even better,” said Brady Byrnes, Senior Vice President of Inflight and Premium Guest Services at American. “This kitchen is an example of the investments we're making to enhance our operations while focusing on delivering a consistent customer experience and service that sets us apart.”

During peak travel season, American's DFW catering facility prepares nearly 15,000 fresh meals a day at the airline's largest hub. “The strength of DFW is that we're literally able to connect customers to the world,” said Byrnes, whose team oversees the experience on board American's aircraft and in its premium lounges. The airline and its regional partners operated more than 800 daily flights from DFW to more than 240 destinations in 23 different countries this past summer.

Innovation as an ingredient to success

Catering hundreds of aircraft a day involves complex coordination, where timing is every bit as important as taste, because meals, snacks and beverages need to be delivered at just the right moment. American designed its new kitchen from the ground up with technology to help catering teams focus on quality, freshness and speed.

American Airlines reports second-quarter 2023 financial results

American Airlines Group Inc. has just reported its second-quarter 2023 financial results, including:

Record quarterly revenue of $14.1 billion, a 4.7% increase year over year.

Second-quarter net income of $1.3 billion, or $1.88 per diluted share. Excluding net special items1, second-quarter net income of $1.4 billion, or $1.92 per diluted share.

Generated operating cash flow of $1.8 billion and free cash flow of $1.2 billion in the second quarter.

Ended the quarter with $14.9 billion of total available liquidity.

Raising full-year adjusted EPS2 guidance to between $3.00 and $3.75 per diluted share.

Credit rating upgraded two notches to B+ by Fitch.

“It was another fantastic quarter for American, driven by the hard work of our team to deliver a reliable operation for our customers and the continued strong demand for our product,” said American’s CEO Robert Isom. “Our operation is performing at historically strong levels, and we have worked to refresh our fleet and build a comprehensive global network, all of which helped to produce record revenues in the second quarter. We will build on this momentum the rest of the year and continue to prioritize reliability, profitability, accountability and strengthening our balance sheet.”

Running a reliable operation

The American Airlines team delivered a strong operational performance during the quarter, achieving its best-ever second-quarter completion factor and controllable completion factor3. American and its regional partners operated nearly 500,000 flights in the second quarter, with an average load factor of approximately 86%.

American delivered a record Memorial Day weekend mainline completion factor and controllable completion factor, while operating its largest-ever mainline Memorial Day weekend schedule. The momentum continued into June, with the American team delivering a record June completion factor and controllable completion factor, despite weather and air traffic control challenges. In the second quarter, American achieved its best-ever April, May and June controllable completion factors3 and delivered 11 more combined zero-cancellation days versus the same period last year.

Returning to profitability

American produced record quarterly revenues of $14.1 billion in the second quarter. The strong revenue performance was driven by continued broad-based demand strength and American’s completion factor performance in the quarter. Demand was particularly strong in the month of June driven by an increase in close-in bookings. Domestic and short-haul international revenue continue to perform well, and the airline has seen noticeable strength in long-haul international demand and yield performance.

In the second quarter, the company produced an operating margin of 15.4% and net income of $1.3 billion on a GAAP basis. Excluding net special items1, American produced net income of $1.4 billion in the second quarter.
