SWISS to name 20 aircraft after Swiss tourist areas and resorts

SWISS is to conclude its 20th-anniversary celebrations by naming twenty of its Airbus A220-100 and A220-300 aircraft after Swiss tourist areas and resorts in collaboration with Switzerland Tourism. The destinations concerned have been selected via a competition. And the top three winners will each be honoured with a full naming ceremony in one of SWISS’s hangars.

Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) is to conclude its current 20th anniversary celebrations with a very special action: twenty of its advanced Airbus A220-100 and A220-300 aircraft are to be named after Swiss tourist areas and resorts, to help publicize far and wide the sheer variety of Switzerland’s tourist landscape. To this end, SWISS and Switzerland Tourism co-ran a competition last December inviting Swiss tourist destinations to submit their own imaginative presentations on why they should be selected. Over 50 entries were received, which were each assessed by a SWISS judging panel on their creativity, their originality, their authenticity and their connection to SWISS.

“We received so many outstanding and original entries, and it was far from easy to select our 20 winners,” says Anja Beeler, SWISS’s Head of Strategic Communications & Content Creation. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our participants for all their creative contributions. And we’re really looking forward to carrying the names of all the varied and unique winning Swiss tourist areas and resorts on our aircraft out into the world.”

The SWISS social media community also selected three favourites from among the 20 winners in a worldwide online poll: Bad Zurzach (AG), Nendaz (VS) and Viamala (GR). Each of these will enjoy its own physical aircraft naming ceremony within a SWISS hangar – two in Zurich and one in Geneva – in the course of 2023.

Delta expands A220 order - 12 more jets taking the total to 119 planes.

Delta Air Lines has firmed up an order for a dozen more A220-300 

Delta Air Lines has firmed up an order for a dozen more A220-300 aircraft, bringing the airline’s total firm order for A220s to 119 aircraft - 45 A220-100s and 74 A220-300s. Throughout the years, Delta has reordered the A220 four times and is today the largest A220 customer and operator.

"These 12 additional A220 aircraft will help power our increasingly streamlined fleet while also providing our customers with the elevated in-flight experience they’ve come to expect from Delta,” said Kristen Bojko, Vice President of Fleet, Delta Air Lines.

Delta took delivery of its first Airbus A220 in October 2018, and was the first U.S. carrier to operate the aircraft type. Delta currently owns a fleet of 415 Airbus aircraft, including 59 A220 aircraft, 266 A320 Family aircraft, 62 A330s and 28 A350-900 aircraft. 

The A220 is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market, bringing together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation GTF™ engines. The A220 brings customers a 50 percent reduced noise footprint as well as around 50 percent lower NOx emissions than industry standards.

With 246 A220s delivered to 16 airlines operating on four continents, the A220 is the optimal aircraft to offer operational flexibility for both regional as well as long-distance routes. To date, more than 70 million passengers have enjoyed the A220. The fleet is currently flying on over 825 routes and 325 destinations worldwide. As of the end of December 2022, some 30 customers have ordered close to 800 A220 aircraft - confirming its leading position in the small single-aisle market.

Croatia Airlines to get six new Airbus A220 aircraft on lease

Today Air Lease Corporation announced long-term lease placements for six new Airbus A220 aircraft with Croatia Airlines, including four A220-300s and two A220-100s.  The aircraft are scheduled to deliver to Croatia Airlines beginning in 2024 through 2025 from ALC’s order book with Airbus.

It is worth recalling that Croatia Airlines replacing its entire fleet represents a long-term process of transition of the company’s business operations as a whole. This implies that all the employees of Croatia’s flag carrier are facing a period in which all business processes will have to be adapted to the new aircraft. This will further optimise the company’s operations and improve passenger cabin occupancy, and cabin crew utilisation. This will concurrently make Croatia Airlines an even more environmentally friendly airline, and will significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, which is today, given the latest developments in the oil and oil derivatives market, the largest share in the expenses of airline companies.

Delta Air Lines orders 12 more A220 aircraft.......total commitment to the type stands at 107

Delta Air Lines has firmed up orders for 12 A220-300 aircraft, bringing Delta’s total firm order for A220s to 107 aircraft - 45 A220-100s and 62 A220-300s. The A220s will be powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines.

Air France takes delivery of its 10th Airbus A220-300

The Paris-based Air France continues to integrate the latest-generation aircraft into its fleet with the addition of its 10th Airbus A220 plane, formally known as the Bombardier CSeries. 

The tenth A220-300

A mini-milestone was reached with the arrival of its 10th Airbus A220-300, the latest jewel in its medium-haul fleet. The aircraft, with registration number F-HZUJ, left the Airbus assembly line in Mirabel (Quebec) to join Paris-Charles de Gaulle, where it will operate the company’s short and medium-haul flights. It operated its first commercial flight to Venice, today 5th July 2022.

The aircraft sports its new name “Auvers-sur-Oise” at the front of its fuselage, in reference to the town north of Paris which is internationally known for the landscape and impressionist painters Paul Cézanne, Camille Corot and Vincent Van Gogh. The Dutch painter spent his last days in Auvers-sur-Oise during a period of intense creativity.

Since 2019 and the delivery of its first Airbus A350, Air France has revived the tradition of naming its aircraft after French towns. Auvers-sur-Oise is the 96th town to be honoured on the company’s aircraft.

Between now and the end of 2025, 60 A220-300s will gradually replace some of Air France’s medium-haul aircraft. With up to 15 deliveries scheduled each year, this is the fastest fleet integration of an aircraft in the history of Air France.

An aircraft boasting an improved economic and environmental performance

The most innovative and efficient single-aisle aircraft in its category, the Airbus A220-300 is perfectly suited to Air France’s short and medium-haul network. It provides a cost reduction per seat of 10% compared to the Airbus A318 and A319 and stands out for its energy efficiency, consuming 20% less fuel than the aircraft it replaces and its CO2 emissions are also reduced by 20%. Its noise footprint is also 34% lower.

These characteristics will play a decisive role in reducing Air France’s environmental footprint and achieving its sustainable development objectives.

Within the framework of its “Air France ACT” programme, the company is targeting a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions per passenger/km by 2030 compared to 2019. This target excludes so-called “offsetting” actions in order to exclusively take into account measures that strictly reduce direct and indirect emissions.

Heading for Europe

This summer, the Air France Airbus A220-300 serves Berlin, Hamburg and Munich (Germany), Milan-Linate, Milan-Malpensa, Bologna, Rome, Naples and Venice (Italy), Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid (Spain), Lisbon (Portugal), Copenhagen (Denmark), Athens (Greece), Helsinki (Finland), Vienna (Austria), Warsaw (Poland) and Stockholm (Sweden) on departure from the Air France hub at Paris-Charles de Gaulle. 

Optimal comfort on board

This aircraft has 148 seats, in a 3-2 seat configuration offering 80% of customers a window or aisle seat. The seat is the widest of the market for single-aisle aircraft. It is reclining and features an adjustable headrest, leather upholstery and an ergonomic seat cushion for enhanced comfort. A wide solid tray table, cup holder, a pouch for storing magazines and books, individual USB A and C ports and a tablet or smartphone holder integrated into the backrest complete the package.

The cabin, the most spacious and brightest in its category, is decorated in the Air France signature colours – shades of blue, a strong presence of white providing light and contrast, and a hint of red symbolising the airline’s excellence and know-how. The central aisle is particularly wide, allowing customers to move about at ease. The carpet revisits the traditional ornamental herringbone pattern, symbolizing the emblematic Haussmann-inspired world of Parisian apartments. Large panoramic windows provide natural light for the duration of the trip. Finally, the spacious baggage racks are easy to access.

airBaltic participates in Airbus A220 tour around the Asia-Pacific region

Latvian airline airBaltic participates in an aircraft manufacturer Airbus’ demonstration tour around the Asia-Pacific region showcasing its latest A220-300 aircraft, formally known as the BombardierCS300.

During the tour, airBaltic’s A220-300 will visit a total of four destinations in the region.

The first three stops of the tour were Sydney, Australia, Singapore and Hanoi, Vietnam. The aircraft will then visit Tokyo, Japan. At each stop, invited guests are welcome to tour the aircraft, attend product briefings by Airbus executives, as well as take part in a short demo flight.

Thus far, airBaltic has carried nearly 8 000 000 passengers on the Airbus A220-300 aircraft. Airbus A220-300s have completed more than 92 000 flights and flown over 200 000 block hours.

Since May 2020, airBaltic operates all its flights with a single aircraft type – Airbus A220-300, thus minimizing the complexity and benefiting from the additional efficiency provided by the aircraft. The airline’s fleet now consists of 34 A220-300 aircraft with six more planned to join in 2022.

Qantas confirms future Airbus fleet with order for 52 aircraft

Australia’s Qantas Group has confirmed that it will order 12 A350-1000s, 20 A220s and 20 A321XLRs. The news was announced at a ceremony in Sydney attended by Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce and Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International, Christian Scherer.

The A350-1000 was selected by Qantas following an evaluation known as Project Sunrise and will enable the carrier to operate the world's longest commercial flights. These will include linking Sydney and Melbourne with destinations such as London and New York non-stop for the first time ever. Featuring a premium layout, the A350 fleet will also be used by Qantas on other international services. The A350-1000 is powered by the latest generation Trent XWB engines from Rolls-Royce.

New levels of efficiency, comfort and sustainability

In the single-aisle category, the A220 and A321XLR were chosen under an evaluation called Project Winton. The aircraft will be used by the Qantas Group on domestic services across the country, which can extend to over five hours. In addition, the A321XLR offers the range capability for flights from Australia to South East Asia, enabling the Qantas Group to open up new direct routes. The A220 and A321XLR fleets will both be powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines.

This agreement is in addition to the existing order for 109 A320neo Family aircraft, which includes the A321XLR for the Qantas Group low-cost subsidiary Jetstar.

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said: “New types of aircraft make new things possible. That’s what makes today’s announcement so significant for the national carrier and for a country like Australia where air travel is crucial. The A350 and Project Sunrise will make any city just one flight away from Australia. It’s the last frontier and the final fix for the tyranny of distance.”

“The A320s and A220s will become the backbone of our domestic fleet for the next 20 years, helping to keep this country moving. Their range and economics will make new direct routes possible. “The Board’s decision to green light what is the largest aircraft order in Australian aviation is a clear vote of confidence in the future of Qantas.”

The A220, A321XLR and A350 are the market leaders in their respective size categories. In addition to offering the highest levels of passenger comfort, the aircraft bring a step-change in efficiency, using up to 25% less fuel, a similar reduction in carbon emissions and a noise footprint 50% lower than previous generation aircraft.

All in-production Airbus aircraft are certified to fly with a 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blend, with a target to increase this to 100% by 2030.

Voyager Aviation Holdings takes delivery of its first new Airbus A220 for fledgling budget airline Breeze

Voyager Aviation Holdings has taken delivered one new Airbus A220 - formally known as the Bombardier CSeries plane, placed on long-term lease to the fledgling budget airline Breeze. This aircraft is VAH’s first A220 and the first of five new A220s to be delivered to Breeze as part of a sale and leaseback transaction with the airline.

“We are delighted to deliver our first A220 to Breeze and to begin our partnership with the airline and its Management team,” VAH President & CEO Mike Lungariello said. “It also aligns with our strategy to continue to diversify and grow new airline partnerships. The A220 delivers up to 25% lower fuel burn and CO2 emissions per seat compared to previous generation aircraft, and 50% lower NOx emissions than industry standards. In addition, the aircraft noise footprint is reduced by 50% compared to previous generation aircraft - making the A220 a good neighbour around airports.

Aviation Capital Group finalises order for 20 A220s

Global full-service aircraft lessor Aviation Capital Group (ACG), wholly owned by Tokyo Century Corporation, has signed a firm contract for 20 A220s following its order for 40 A320neo Family aircraft including five A321XLRs announced in December 2021.”

The A220 is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market and brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation PW1500G geared turbofan engines. Featuring a 50% reduced noise footprint and up to 25% lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation aircraft, as well as around 50% lower NOx emissions than industry standards, the A220 is a great aircraft for regional as well as long-distance routes operations. The latest agreement lifts the total number of firm orders for the A220 above 700.

With this order, ACG is supporting the recently launched multi-million dollar ESG fund initiative by Airbus that will contribute towards investment into sustainable aviation development projects.

First Airbus A320neo with Airspace Cabin delivered to SWISS

New Cabin Features for Passengers on the European network

 SWISS has taken delivery of its first Airbus A320neo featuring the new Airspace cabin configuration. 

The new Airspace cabin features include: slimmer sidewall panels for extra personal space at shoulder level; better views through the windows with their redesigned bezels and completely integrated window shades; the largest overhead bins for 60% more bags; the latest full LED lighting technologies; LED-lit ‘entrance area’; and new lavatories with hygienic touchless features and antimicrobial surfaces.

SWISS is a long standing Airbus customer,operating Airbus A220 and A320 Family Aircraft on its European network and in addition A330s and A340s globally. In 2018 Lufthansa Group, the parent company of SWISS, chose to equip more than 80 of its new A320 Family aircraft on order from Airbus with Airspace cabins.

The A320neo Family is the most successful aircraft family ever and displays 99,7% operational reliability rate. The A320neo provides operators with 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO 2  emissions. The A320neo Family incorporates the latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklet wing tip devices. The Airbus’ A320neo Family offers unmatched comfort in all classes and Airbus’ 18-inch wide seats in economy as standard. 

At the end of December 2021, the A320neo Family had received nearly 7,900 orders from over 120 customers worldwide.

Iraqi Airways receives its first A220-300

Iraqi Airways, the national carrier of Iraq, has taken delivery of its first out of five A220-300 aircraft from Mirabel, Canada. Upon entry into service, Iraqi Airways will become one of the first airlines to operate the A220 in the Middle East region.

With the A220, Iraqi Airways will benefit from the aircraft’s exceptional technical, economic and environmental performance. Iraqi Airways’ A220-300 features a modern and highly comfortable dual-class cabin that seats 132 passengers; 12 in business class and 120 in economy class. The state of the art aircraft will play an integral part of Iraqi Airways fleet renewal and modernization plan.

The A220 is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market and brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation PW1500G geared turbofan engines. 60 aircraft order for Airbus from Aviation Capital Group

The Global aircraft leasing specialists Aviation Capital Group has agreed on a deal in principle with European planemaker Airbus for 60 aircraft. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed for 20 A220s and a firm contract for 40 A320neo Family aircraft, of which five are A321XLRs.

AerCap Delivers First of 14 Airbus A220 Aircraft to Breeze Airways

AerCap Holdings has announced that it has delivered the first of 14 new PW1500G powered Airbus A220-300 aircraft to Breeze Airways.

The 14-aircraft deal comprises the sale and leaseback of 11 A220 aircraft, the second of which is scheduled to deliver this month with the remaining deliveries continuing through 2022 and 2023, and 3 aircraft owned by Einn Volant Aircraft Leasing Holdings Limited ("EVAL"), a global aircraft leasing platform and joint venture between AerCap and Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec ("CDPQ"), a global investment group. All three aircraft will be managed by AerCap and are scheduled for delivery through 2022.

ITA Airways firms up order for 28 Airbus aircraft

 

ITA Airways, Italy’s new national carrier, has firmed up an order with Airbus for 28 aircraft, including seven A220s, 11 A320neos and 10 A330neos, the latest version of the most popular A330 widebody airliner. The order confirms the Memorandum of Understanding announced on 30th September 2021. In addition, the airline will pursue its plans to lease A350s to complement its fleet modernisation.

 

“Today the strategic partnership with Airbus takes an important step forward with the finalisation of the order we announced last September. In addition to this agreement, possibilities for further collaboration have emerged, in particular regarding technological developments in the aviation sector and digitalisation, where Airbus is the market leader. All this is part of the actions to achieve our environmental sustainability objectives, " said Alfredo Altavilla, Executive President of ITA Airways.
